My kids wanted pet fish, so we came here to buy them. This store is really large with everything you can think of for pets. I even saw that they have a groomer there. My kids each picked a beta fish and some decorations for their fish bowls. They have small pets like hamsters, birds, and chinchillas for purchase there. The store is well organized by sections, so it was very easy to find what you are looking for. The checkout was fast and easy. The cashier was nice and friendly with my kids. This review is just for Sam the pale goomer. If I could give a 0 I would. As soon as I walked into the groomers Sam was the only team member that giving a rude and unwelcoming attitude. It was my dogs first time getting groomed let alone being outside and seeing other dogs he didn't know (he just got his shot two days ago, which they allow 24 after rabies shot) so everything is new to a 16 week old puppy like him. The girl who works in the fish department was extremely rude. I asked her politely if I could get a snail, a sucker fish and two neons for a classroom fish tank and she asked how big my tank was. Since my tank was only one and a half gallons and I already had a gold fish in there, she would only sell me one snail. I asked her if that was a fish law and she gave me another rude reply. She was upset that I had a goldfish in there but I told her Goldie is 5 years old and super happy. She then accused me of stunting her growth. So I purchased my allotted 1 snail for $5 and when I got home I put the snail in the tank. He hasn't moved for 2 days. When I took a closer look, he was white and dead. I won't be going back there. I had a very disappointing experience with Petco Grooming at the 4300 E Main St, Unit A, Ventura, CA 93003 location due to poor communication and a last-minute cancellation. I scheduled an appointment online and did not receive any cancellation notice until my dog was literally being checked in at the counter, when I received an email stating the appointment had been canceled. This was especially frustrating because it was a rainy day and it took me about 30 minutes to get there due to the freeway being reduced to one lane from closures. When I asked about this, the groomer said she had called, left a voicemail, and emailed earlier -- however, I did not receive any voicemail, and the only email I received was the one sent at check-in. When I called the store, the associate was apologetic and said there may have been a system error or miscommunication. He also stated a voicemail had been left but could not explain why I never received it. What made this even more confusing is that a second appointment I had scheduled for another dog on the same day was still active and had not been canceled. While the phone associate was polite, the overall experience showed a lack of organization, consistency, and respect for customers' time. Absolutely horrible. I took my 6 pound 9 year old dog to get groomed. Daisy the manager was grooming her. They called me and said she was done, however I walked in and they said they didn't want to finish because Daisy said she touched her ear and it started bleeding... I didn't understand since her hair on her head had not been touched. I let Daisy finish the haircut. It was a bad idea. I had to take my dog to the vet because she had a broken eye vessel I thought. However the vet said there were signs of strangulation. That the groomer did this to her. So she has an eye ulcer now a broken eye vessel and is on 2 medications for 2 weeks and has to be seen again in 2 weeks. The vet bill was $160, plus the next visits I have to take time off work to take her to. I will never take my dog to Petco ever again. I hope they fire Daisy and properly train any other groomers they have. read more

Doesn't Honor Appointments I had a 3:10 pm appointment at this PetCo for a vaccination for my cat.. This was the first appointment time that they offered, so I had the first appointment. I filled out the required paperwork online before my appointment. When I arrive 10 minutes early as they texted me to do, I went to the line that I had previously waited in a year before with my other cat for getting vaccinated. There was a podium nearby but it was all dog owners in the line so I mistakenly assumed it was a grooming line. There were no signs anywhere about what all the lines were for. I went into the vaccination line where I had been the year before and waited my turn but when I made it to the front of the line they told me I should have been waiting in the other line and I should get out of the vaccination line and into the other line. There were no signs anywhere about what the two lines were. I just did what I did the year before and got into the vaccination line.. Last year you could go into the vaccination line and they walked down the line and checked you in. Instead, after waiting for 15 minutes or so with the earliest scheduled appointment in the vaccination line, I was told that I had to get out of that line and wait in a different line, even though I filled out all the required information online and had an appointment. After waiting in that line and "checking in" (I.e., being asked if your pet was feeling ok today,) the employee tells me that the veterinarian is really slow and asks me if I want to reschedule. I tell her that I had a 3:10'pm appointment and that my cat is really afraid of riding in the car, so no, I do not want to leave and come back another day and try again even though I had an appointment. Petco takes many other people before us and we don't get out of there until 4:15 pm even though our appointments was for 3:10. Meanwhile our cat is meowing continuously and scared the whole time. I will definitely be researching other places to go for both of our cats from now on.! The icing on the cake is that they tell me to pay at the register after the vaccination and then come back for the paperwork. The guy at the register tells me that the paperwork will be sent to me via email so I leave and then I get a call from Petco saying I didn't pick up my paperwork. I tell them I was told that it would be sent via email and they say "No, you need to come and pick it up." Then I ask if I could come the next day and they tell me "No we won't be here tomorrow." Then when I ask again they say, "Maybe we could leave the paperwork at a register and you can get it tomorrow." What?? There are a bunch of idiots working there. It's not worth your time. I will never go there again for vaccinations or anything else. read more

Let me start by saying, i've shopped at this store for many many years, and have always had pleasant experiences with the staff of the store. So this post isn't about the store itself, but about the grooming department. I made an appointment weeks ago to try out their grooming for my 11month old rescue. I show up for his appointment with proof of vaccinations. However it didn't specify rabies. He has been groomed before with these vaccine records so i was stumped. So I take action and call the shelter he was from, because they would've obviously given him all his shots. The groomer says they have a 15 minute window, so i'm scrambling on the phone with shelter to send me proof of rabies. I get the proof at the 12 minute mark of the 15 minute window, his appt was at 11am, soooo relieved to be able to get my pup in, just for them to dryly say sorry we can't take him. I said what about the 15 minute window you just said I had, to which she replies matter of factly, Yea sorry that just pushes us back, we're not able to take him. Huh? What literally happened to my 15 minute window????? I understand scheduling, and sticking to it, but I was within the reasonable time THAT SHE SPECIFIED, and wasn't willing to honor her word. I'm not one to call out names or make negative reports, but i'm so upset at how that went down, here i am. Daisy and Erica - I really hope next time something like this happens with someone, you'll be a little more open to helping the situation, instead of so quick to turn away business. I was within reason, within YOUR timeframe that YOU specified. I honestly don't think I've ever been so disappointed with the lack of customer service there. My wife was out of town this weekend, so she asked me to pick up dog food. I'm not an animal person by nature, because my pet history is fraught with complexity, disappointment and pain. Nevertheless, I went to Petco, as directed, and was pleasantly surprised by the well-organized and spacious Petco aisles. For a time during my childhood, my mother intensely disliked the idea of having pets in our home and resisted my ardent pleas for a furry companion. Mom was pet-friendly until a herd of miniature horses escaped from a nearby carnival one summer and took refuge in our home for several hours while we were out. The aftermath of the equine home invasion left behind serious property damage, psychological scars, and far more pony-generated waste than thought possible from such tiny and comically adorable creatures. It was almost as if they were angry with my family and our simple belongings. Grandma Dorothea's prized collection of risqué pot holders had to be burned. At least that's what we told Grandma. At the time of the stampede, we were on vacation at a nearby highway rest stop. We didn't have a lot of money when I was young, but managed to save all of our loose change during the course of the year. The metallic bounty allowed us to subsidize carefree summer afternoons on a small patch of lush green grass, sunflowers and daisies at a highway rest stop near our home. Those summers were magical. We met a lot of interesting people, communed with nature, and ate way too much junk food. My brothers and I would use the sweat sock full of coins that my mother provided each of us at the beginning of each summer season to both patronize the rest stop vending machines and defend our family's patch of grass from incursion by other families or weary travelers who wandered into our tiny oasis. We looked forward to receiving our 'summer sock' full of loose change with the same giddy anticipation as our annual 'Christmas Cleaning Supplies and Yule Bucket' that we traditionally received on Christmas morning. We later suspected that Mom took advantage of the unlocked janitor's closet at our rest stop, but no one questioned the source of her generosity at the time or why we couldn't look in the trunk of our car after a long day of summer fun at the rest stop. Petco has hundreds of gift ideas for your pets, and the employees are consistently friendly, knowledgeable and empathetic. I was directed to the dog food aisle by a helpful employee as soon as I requested assistance, and was able to quickly and efficiently make my purchase without issue. I've been loyal to this location for over a year. Lately the staff has changed, as has customer service. They have been bottom of the barrel on crickets for almost 2 months. I stop by on delivery day (tuesdays and fridays) and sometimes the day after too. How frustrating is it to have hungry frogs and lizards at home , who I can't find food for? Especially when you consider I bought them here. That wouldn't push me to write a negative review however, just gotta take my business elsewhere. Today my wife had an appointment to have our dog groomed here. She showed up early and they asked her for our pups vaccination records. Ok. My other groomer ( a private business) never asked for any of that. But I don't mind sharing, as I view it as a nice safety precaution. But a heads up would be nice! How about , i don't know, when we scheduled the appointment?? I was working and I have the records, and I don't get cell service from the hospital. So despite her efforts to obtain them from me, my wife was turned away, met with rude remarks from the grooming / dog training associate. Poor management of this business. The Fish selection and presentation of the tanks are always great and have never brought diseases home from this store to my tanks. Thank you to the grooming service who took me in as a walk in. It's been a wild summer and my dog has been to all types of places and needed a good bath. I called ahead of time to confirm if I could just walk in and the gentleman replied "We always take walk-ins" good to know, I thought it was by appointment only. My did the $26.00 bath which is the basic one. It took about 45 min which I didn't mind the wait. Thank you to the gentlemen for informing me of my dogs issues and concerns afterwards. The Veterinarian Dr. Jayden Kim is very rude at the Vetco clinic. I have seen him throw a temper and yell at clients when administering vaccines. This is an average big-chain pet store. They frequently have skinny pigs (hairless guinea pigs) for sale at this location. The staff seem pretty caring and considerate, but as a big store it's going to have some questionable practices (such as just the fact that they do sell live animals and the condition they come in or the mortality rate while they're here isn't what you'd like it to be). I come here to buy particular guinea pig chew toys that they have in-store for a great price. I have bought live feeder crickets before too. Recently my husband noticed their young chameleons were distressed clinging to the top of their glass-sided aquarium after their climbing branch had fallen and they could not get down to access food or water. We alerted an employee who came right away to help them, but it was a little sad we as customers were the ones to notice their distress. Wish this store would not sell both male and female guinea pigs... Also wish they would not separate guinea pigs when they have 2 who live together but they want to "fill up" more tanks. Guinea pigs are extremely social so separating them is unhelpful and it can be super hard to bond them later. Bad husbandry. Sad. If you're okay shopping at a store such as this, then this one is a pretty typical one for it's type. read more

I think this store gets overlooked most of the time due to the other chain pet store which is showcased in a highly trafficked shopping center, as well as numerous locally owned and run pet stores in the Ventura area, while it's a large store it seems smaller compared to others. This is my go to store when I'm on my way home from work, it's closer to my drive home, so it's easy to run in get what I want and leave. The layout is pretty simple, dog supplies are to the right as you walk in, starting with bedding and merging to pet toys, training supplies, pet bath and piddle pads, and then to the dog food which consists of higher end dog foods, Blue Buffalo, Royal Canin, Nutro, to the less expensive Purina One and so on. Normally when I go to this store, its rare I see a clerk on the actual sales floor, they are normally at the registers, but when I've asked for help the sales clerk up front has always done the best to help me or get the help that I need. Prices are comparable to the other Pet Chain store down the road, but you definitely want to do your research before purchasing any big name products. I did find the dog beds prices at Petco more reasonable than at the competitors, I will definitely be picking up one of those soon. read more

My 15-year-old poodle has been groomed at Petco Ventura for the past 7 years. He has always been treated with care and patience. He's a little guy, 9-1/2 pounds of poodly goodness. He's nearly blind, mostly deaf, and completely toothless. When poodles get overgrown, they get matted. Zach will need to be shaved. Today, Zach was groomed by David. To my knowledge, this was David's first time with Zach. He took the time with me to know that this little dog is very precious to me and that I trusted him. David took his time and gave Zach breaks so he wouldn't be stressed. I can't say enough about Petco Grooming and it wasn't just today's experience. I took my dachshund in to get his nails clipped and buffed. Courtney was our groomer and it was our first time using petco for grooming. What a horrible experience! She cut my dog's nails the wrong way! They were split, too short, and oddly square. Dogs nails are supposed to be cut at an angle but she filed the top and hurt him in the process. I'm never bringing my dog to get groomed at this location again. I couldn't believe that she was allowed to groom considering she obviously needed training. Since moving to Ventura, this has been our go-to pet store for kitty food & toys, but we're less inclined to return after yesterday's visit. As Deb did the shopping, I visited with the live animals and was concerned about the condition of several birds that looked in less-than-healthy condition. As we were paying, we advised a staff member that some of the animals looked like they needed attention.
