I've been taking my dog (Lhasa Apso) for grooming at this location for over two years. Today I was absolutely mortified at the level of customer service I experienced. I dropped off my dog this morning with the grooming manager and I picked her up after work, which works best for us since I live in Thousand Oaks. After I picked her up I noticed her face was trimmed more like a Schnauzer, and so I took her back. The groomer was just about to leave, but she was very accommodating and trimmed her face anyways, albeit a bit rushed, but it looked much better. Soon after I returned home I noticed that the dog had only one paw's nails clipped, a service I specifically requested. I also noticed that there was a long piece of matted hair hanging significantly longer from her ear than the rest of her hair! I take my dog to get groomed because she does have a tendency to get matted from excessive licking on her backside. They have always been really good about shaving her with the lowest razor attachment, and have always done a decent job. They always comment on how sweet my dog is, and have always given her a bag of treats when she leaves there. So, today I call and try to inform the person in the grooming salon about the few issues I had and he immediately put me on hold. Next thing I have the Petco store manager on the line and had to explain everything all over again. He asked if I could bring my dog back to the groomer the next day so they could look at her and try and remedy the situation. I advised him this was the only day I had arranged for this as I'm going to the hospital for a procedure on Wednesday. I also live in Thousand Oaks, thirty-five minutes away, after I had already been there earlier and to have to return there with the dog was a terrible inconvenience. I spoke to him again and he did offer to work something out with the Thousand Oaks Petco to get the situation resolved and he also offered to refund my money, which at that point, I should have just taken my $46 back, but what happened next was what completely floored me. He left me a voice mail message stating that "he was doing me a favor" by refunding the grooming charges without even seeing the dog, and that "the groomers had complained about my dog in the past" (?!) and that "maybe it would be best for everybody for me to take my business elsewhere". ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! First, the groomers have never once had mentioned that my dog was a problem. I mean, how hard is it to shave a dog? Only after I complain about substandard service does this come out of the thin air! I offered to take dated photos of the things that needed to be fixed since I wasn't able to bring my dog right away, and I figured it would be best sooner than later. When I asked him specifics about why my dog was a "problem" in the past he simply stated, "I don't know exactly. That's what the groomers told me." ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Now I'm really angry and I'll be taking the dog back there out of principle on Saturday. I'm dying to hear from the groomers themselves. If there was a problem, shouldn't they have mentioned this prior to my services being rendered? Oh, and you can bet they will be giving my money back, fixing the dog, and NEVER getting my business again. read more

Everytime I go to PetCo I feel like a child visiting a zoo, mesmerized by all the little critters throughout the store. I've purchased birds, lizards, hamsters, little fish and hermit crabs in the past. My favorite little critters are the hermit crabs...they're funny because some of them are personable and some are just real skittish about coming out. They have a lot of hermit crabs with painted shells, adding personality to each of them. I put a couple "vacant" shells in their habitat and I had one hermit crab that would just change from one shell to another...it was pretty funny to watch. :0) At one point, I had five in one habitat and I named them after the "Friday" crew...there was "Craig", "Felisha", "Deebo", "Smokey" and "Shaneequah". Okay...Shaneequah wasn't a character in the movie Friday...but there should have been! :0) I also bought a male canary who sang like a champ for years, I named him "Happy." The store has a variety of pet supplies including bird cages, reptile habitats, fish aquariums, pet carriers and the fixings that go with each. They have a cool pet grooming area too. The staff has always been helpful and quite informative about the pets they sell. I like visiting the pets there and I bring new critters home from time to time. So, check them out! Man my dog just loves coming here! The staff is friendly and prices are ok. I would leave 5 stars if they had a better selection. I know the store is kinda small compared to some I have been to but would just like more options. read more

I like this store if for no other reason it has Izzy's favorite dry food at a reasonable price. As an added bonus, I found other catnip-filled stuff that she can chew on, attack, and lick to her furry little hearts content. I do prefer this establishment over others simply because the employees appear to be knowledgeable and don't get that glazed over look in their eyes indicating they would rather be anywhere but where they are when questions are posed. read more

Walked straight to the fish section. I found those cute little colorful fish and easy to fall in love with them. I think it's great for a small tank or for you just start to get to know them. My friend bought fish supply here which on sale sometimes. Monic was trying to help me finding Mollies. They have 2 cute Ballon Mollies but not the same kind with red beautiful tails. Thanks Monic. I'll be back next Thur to check out new arrived fish. Very friendly service. read more

Ehh. Seems under staffed all the time. The layout is awkward and confusing. I'll go if PetSmart doesn't have what I'm looking for.

This Petco is alright, the staff is friendly and nice, and that goes a long ways. They have a nice large selection of pet food, equipment, and service. They also have various types of pets for sale in the store, such as reptiles, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, birds, and such. They also have a pet grooming service and pet snack bar. read more

I brought my maltipoo to the groomer at this location. Not only was Misha able to squeeze her in, she did an unbelievable job at pampering my pup! The employees here are always friendly and professional! I highly recommend them! read more

She literally kept me standing there from 11:45am (my appointment time) to 12:00pm (I have texts documenting when she started arguing with me and when she finally took my dog). Not to mention the fact she completely BUTCHERED my dog's haircut. Who completely trims HALF of the tail and leaves the entire rest of it LONG? She definitely did this deliberately because she wasn't happy with my decision to trim my dog's hair. She acted as if I asked her to shave my dog completely bald when I quite literally picked the guard that would trim the least amount of fur. And then she wanted to argue with me about that too. What exactly did she want me to do then? Shave her bald or not? She's completely unprofessional and I'm still baffled by her attitude and her behavior. read more

I found everything I was looking for after going to two different pet stores. They had a great variety for dog collars, especially for larger breeds which is difficult to find on the fly that's stylish. I also found XXL shirt for my mastiff, not easy to find on the go as well. The women at the checkout was very friendly and actually made me happy. Definitely, would recommend Petco in Ventura. read more

Took my dogs for grooming as I have for the last 10 or so years at the same Petco. I don't go often, maybe 3 or so times per year. Anyway, my groomer, Courtney, was at lunch 10 minutes before our scheduled service and I was told to wait outside or walk around. I waited outside. When she came back I went in....waited another 5 or so, no big deal. Then signing documents she mentioned if they found fleas they'd have to treat them and I said no, they're already on a oral treatment. So she said if she found a flea she'd call me to come get my dogs if she couldn't treat them. Fine, I was more than confident and said you've groomed my dogs before and we didn't have any problems but I was happy to sign and initial. Then she came around to collect my girls. I have a Chaweenie who happy, or nervous, pees and reminded the groomer of this. Then my dog pooped a little bit. So she got a bag and I said to let me do it, which I did, it was a small little nugget if that's not too TMI. She then asked if they were nippy. I said no, my Chaweenie is super sweet and only has the pee issue. I was starting to feel like she didn't want to do the grooming. But she came for my rat terrier mix who wasn't any happier but doesn't have the same issues as the Chaweenie but was avoiding her and shaking but she took her and then said she would call me when they were done. About 20 minutes later she called and said the Chaweenie poo'd in her cage so she wouldn't groom her feeling like she was too stressed and that my other dog seemed stressed too so you'll need to come back for both. So I did....I just felt like she never wanted to do the service to begin with. Wasted my time and now I have to look for a new groomer. I see here on Yelp that my groomer was witnessed kicking another dog. No wonder my dogs were "stressed" if they even were. I mean vets and grooming are not my dogs favorite places to visit so they're not going to be happy. Anyway, beware. I'm not going back. ‍ read more

Every time I go into this Petco the staff is not helpful. The staff is not knowledgeable and often act too busy to care for your customer needs. I asked someone if he could point me out to the joint medicine for my dog and he said "um I will be right back." I stood there and waited for a very long time as he never returned to help. Another time I went in....my veterinarian said to buy dog food that is AAFCO approved..so after the vet visit I went to this Petco and asked the sales person for help in finding an AAFCO approved dog food. The woman told me there is no such thing and she has never heard or seen that before in her life. I told her well if the vet told me it is probably an existing label...she refused and started to laugh like it was a joke and walked away. So, I went to look at the dog foods by myself and right away found small printed labels on many dog foods that said AAFCO approved. The customer service is so terrible at the store.....I thought Petco was all about good customer service, but obviously this store needs some severe training. I have many more stories about the bad customer service here, but I wont bore you. You get the point...you have been warned not to shop at this horrid place...Happy yelping. I've kept and maintained freshwater tanks for about 14 years. I've had a tank running for seven years with a twin tale Betta, four Penguin Tetras and a long-fin white Cloud (an easy $40 worth). I bought an algae eater and 2 Cory cats from Petco the other day. After acclimating the fish, I just poured the fish into my tank (which I rarely do) with the water IN THE bag from Petco. After two days I noticed that my original fish where less active and weren't eating. On the third day, all my original fish where dead. I called Petco and spoke with a clerk and she told me to bring in a water sample. They tested the water and found all levels to be safe or ideal and they had no explanation for what happened. I was directed to the store manager who told me that he couldn't do anything for me because 1) I didn't buy the original fish there and 2) their water is fine. I spoke with a couple of friends who used to work at that this Petco, they told me that the water comes straight from the tap and they rarely maintain or service the filtration system. After this experience, I will never shop at this Petco again. I not only have 3 freshwater tanks, but a salt tank, 3 cats, a dog and 3 turtles. I will share my experience with my friends and others who have pets. read more

My fiancé and I went in to get hamster food and a ball. We found a good food but they were out of the ball we wanted on the shelf. We asked if they could check in the back but since the cashier was with a customer she called for help in our section. The guy that was supposed to help us got caught up in a personal conversation with someone else and never helped us. Then he became our cashier because the woman before had to go to lunch. He was not helpful, told us to check the item number before we say what price it is and was kinda rude. We prefer pet smart but was unable to go to that store. However petco does have a good selection of food and bedding that pet smart sometimes doesn't have. Always good to have a back up. read more

From the moment I walked in to this store with a kind welcome, to the final interaction with the girl ringing up my purchase, I was treated amazingly! First of all took my purebreed Maltese there; and the girl that set the appt sprained her ankle the night before so the girl that were there on a Sunday; were upset she booked them for her appts. They didn't want to take the time to comb my beautiful dogs fur so they shaved her almost bald..and then complained how I didn't brush my dog's fur; very rude with a girl named "Brandy" young girl who had no respect for me or her rudeness in front of my teenage daughter; my dog was shaking when I picked her up; who know what they did when she was put in the kennel for p/up. Just very rude; overpriced; and very immature staff. The manager addressed the situation, but I will NEVER bring my baby back there again; Beware...of the immature staff in the grooming section!!!! We started the training program for our puppy which was supposed to be positive dog training, during our training our questions were dismissed about how to handle our puppy and the serious issues we wanted to resolve with our puppy only got worse during the training, after 6 weeks of training we were told that any further more training would cost more, (keep in mind this 6 weeks was sit, lay down, a tiny bit of stay and a tiny bit of walk next to me, half of which we had already taught our puppy) after explaining we had already taught our puppy to sit, lay down, walk on a leash, and even speak, we then tried to show our trainer in person just for her to knock down our progress without even seeing what we had trained our puppy to do, she then decided to start from square one and blamed us for not doing the training right when our dog wouldn't understand simple commands when he already knew our own SPECIFIC AND PERFERED command, and basically told us we didn't have the right dog. Idk who the hell thinks that's an okay thing to say, I love my dog and honestly this training is probably the worst thing I've done for him, how can you train a dog in a tiny cage that you sell in the store? lol what a joke read more

I think that Clementine L. has been smoking dog treats too much. Please lay off the "Scooby Snacks." I have had nothing but positive experiences in this store over the last couple of months. Yes, there was a time where this store was horrible, but being that I frequent this location multiple times a month I've seen a positive improvement. It's cleaner and the shelves aren't empty like it was before. The employees have been very helpful with my dog and reptile needs and if they didn't know an answer to one of my questions they asked someone who did. As far as the AAFCO approved dog food, Beneful, Merrick, Natural Balance, Wellness, Solid Gold, Blue Buffalo, Science Diet, Nutro, and a few others are all AAFCO approved and are carried at Petco. This is a majority of their dog food in the store. AAFCO standards are only the minimum requirement for your dog and by your Vet only asking you to looking for this label, they didn't really help you out a whole lot. One of the largest vet backed dog foods is Science Diet and they aren't even that great. I've only seen one of their varieties that has no grains and my dog is extremely allergic to grains, so that doesn't leave me with much of an option going with a vet recommended brand. read more
