Had the absolute worst costumer service experience I've ever had today with Kayleen, one of the groomers. I had an appointment for today at 2pm. This morning I got a call asking if I could come in at 11am instead.. I told her I was sorry I couldn't, but I could TRY and be there by 11:45. I explained I might be a few minutes late as I was picking my daughter up from ballet. When I arrived it was 11:55. When I got to the check in desk no one greeted me for 5 minutes. When she finally came out she said I was 15 minutes late and the appointment is canceled. I explained that I rearranged my schedule trying to accommodate her by coming earlier and I apolgized for being a few minutes late and asked if she'd like me to come back at my original appt time at 2. She kept rolling her eyes at me and just walking away mid conversation. She said she'd have to now stay extra and I messed with the whole schedule. She told me she didn't want to deal with this and was going to lunch lol. I literally was astonished. Thankfully the manager came over and profusely apologized and told me she must just be having a bad day but that is no way to treat someone. read more

I brought my pup with me today en route to my home after a grooming session in Cardiff; this is the best Petco location I've been to! An employee approached me and asked if I needed help as I haphazardly walked around- she was immediately my dogs new favourite human! The set-up of this store is not ideal, but, the employees are the kindest/fellow customers respect their animals/others by being mindful of leashes and, properly supervise their animals. That alone is five stars- maybe the people bringing non-service pups to the Encinitas Target could get some lessons ? read more

I just moved here and needed a grooming service for my shepherd who can be a challenge to groom. This location is close so I gave it a try. I read the reviews but have found a lot of "Karen's" are out there. So, off I went to give it a try. I must say I was very happy with the service and had a good experience plus my dog Tucker was very happy and giving kisses to the groomer. I think the groomers name is Kayleen. DO NOT use their new vaccination clinic. Dumbest setup I have ever seen and most traumatic experience I've ever had just to get my dogs vaccine boosters. For some reason they don't open the actual vet side of the store and instead they force all these leashed dogs to stand in a big line in the store itself. At no point is your dog taken to a private room. They just have you go to the food aisle in the back corner of the store and in front of all these other dogs to get their shots. Soooo stressful for the pups and prices are much higher now that it's not thrive anymore. I'm only giving an extra star because the staff were very nice but the setup was awful if your dogs get at all nervous going to the vet. read more

This review is only about the grooming department. If you have a nervous pup do not take them here. When I first walked in the receptionist at the grooming area was dismissive and when she brought the groomer out she seemed completely unexperienced and had to go get her manager when I mentioned there was a bit of matting. Then when I suggested she feel the mats so there would be a reference for what kind of groom my dog could get, the groomer walked up with the slip lead very aggressively. My puppy, who is nervous towards new people, was backing up and had her tail tucked between her legs and when I suggested the groomer give her a treat to make her less nervous she said no and that they would not give treats in the salon, which wasn't what I was asking, I just wanted her to try a more soft approach to make my puppy comfortable before she went back. She then proceeded to tell me she couldn't do the groom with my dog if she was being uncooperative. She wasn't uncooperative or aggressive, she was just nervous. Finally I said that we were just going to leave because I was not comfortable getting my dog groomed there and all the receptionist said was "ok". When we walked out my puppy was so nervous she went to the bathroom right out in the parking lot which is not like her at all. All in all the groomer seemed unexperienced and like she should not have been working with animals at all. If you want to get your dog groomed at a Petco, take them to the one in San Marcos they are way kinder. read more

I just finished a 4 week private training course for my puppy Mack with Emily. She is so awesome! Helped me out tremendously with my Golden Retriever puppy. Basic commands he knows very well and she always gave me great advice on puppy play and help preventing his nipping, considering I have a 14 month old boy at home. I'm confident I'll have a well trained dog as we progress. He's already made strides in improvement since we started. I already signed up for advanced training! Can't wait. Thanks Emily! read more

This is one of the better Petco stores I've been too, it's pretty big and they have a lot of stuff. The staff is friendly and the store is clean. What made my trip the most memorable was the staff at the grooming salon. My dog was pretty nervous and they made her feel safe and were so friendly and supportive. I took my older cat that I inherited to a vet because he was so skinny and they took blood tests and everything and said that he was alright. I was also concerned about his hair loss along his lower half and was informed that he would have to come back for a skin scraping. I went to Petcos on Encinitas Blvd and talked to Brandon, I think is a manager. He suggested that I take him off poultry and to look for grain free and then took me around and pointed out all the products, both dry and wet. After taking his advice the cat has filled out and his coat is beautiful. That saved me a few bucks. Scrape this. read more

I am a huge fan of this Petco! I liked the nice friendly staff and wide selection of puppy/dog food already, but since their renovations it is even better! They are pretty reasonably priced and it's convenient when we run out of something and don't have time to order it from Amazon. They also run sales regularly on toys and other essentials. We went last night to pick out a new water bowl for our puppy as she's seemed to develop a weird fear of water bowls (we've tried so many options!) and I was having a hard time deciding what to get and the lady who worked there was so helpful showing me all the options and let me know that if I got one and our puppy didn't like it then just save the receipt and I could return it. We also use this location for our grooming. It is very reasonably priced from what I could tell after calling around to several places and Jessica is awesome! We have taken our puppy to her 3 times now and she was really great about suggestions on how to ease her into grooming so she doesn't build up a fear. Jessica is so sweet and loves our pup as much as we do! I'd defiantly recommend her. read more

Appalling experience this evening at the front counter trying to purchase special prescription food for my pet. My cat was in desperate need of renal support food which can only be purchased with a Veterinarian prescription which we presented at the front desk. "It's store policy that our site veterinarian approved it on our system and they gone for the day," staff said. Personally, I don't think the policy makes sense, especially since we presented a legitimate prescription from my pet's veterinarian. I tried to reasoned with the staff member but he declined my request to call the after hours site veterinarian saying that "they would still not approve it." I felt this was such a unique case that staff could easily make an exception. I wasn't trying to buy a controlled substance nor a drug related medication, it was special renal food for cats! Management Staff - please consider changing your policy for this type of prescribed food - especially for after hours when the "site veterinarian" isn't present. read more

Do NOT get your pet bathed here. They did not wash our dog. She honestly smelled worse after. I even had the feeling when I dropped off that the groomer did not want to wash our pet, he seemed like he was looking for excuses like an ear infection (she didn't have one). I called and spoke to a manager, who then offered a "do over bath" - we scheduled the bath and then when I arrived the groomers had not come in that day. So we drove there for nothing. Petco hadn't attempted to call us to notify me that they needed to reschedule. Horrible experience. Won't be going back. Huge waste of money read more

On Halloween I tried on 2 separate occasions to buy an Australian rainbow fish, both unsuccessful. I'd like to preface this by saying I'm not underage, myself and my family have had an array of pets including fish, and like most people have access to the internet to do research. The first staff member approached, a young lady, said I needed a 5-6gal tank and that there needed to be 3-4 of them since it had to be in a school. She also mentioned that they grew to be about 4in long and therefore needed a bigger tank. Later that day I came back and approached a second staff member who happened to be the manager of the store. He said I needed 10gal tank, never mentioned the growth of the fish, and said I needed like 6-7 of them. On top of this, he also said the freshwater tank had to be in place for 2 weeks before I could get the fish. As a replacement fish he said I could get a Beta since they were easy to "just throw in there". This was ironic because later when the store was called regarding this incident, he said he was looking out for "what was best" for the fish yet when I was there I saw at least 3 Beta fish dead in little cups. I also double checked with the petco website and it states in the Stabilizing Period section "Wait until the tank has remained stable for at least 24 to 48 hours before adding any fish." There is no mention of a two week waiting period and the staff has very clear inconsistencies with regard to information about their animals. This was all on top of the fact that the store only had a SINGLE Australian rainbow fish to sell, which they would have noticed if they had taken the time to at least walk to the fish section of the store. After this experience I will not be returning to any Petco store in the future and will advise friends and family to do the same. read more

Just picked up my dog from the groomers at Petco and needless to say I am not happy. I picked her up with bloody paws as she cut multiple nails too short and was still actively bleeding. The groomer also cut off ALL of her whiskers. We have never had this issue before until this new groomer came on . The groomer who did this is Robin. Petco is a common known store, but I still think that it is good to write a review for those who do not know of it. The toys that I got there were good, OK quality, and kind of expensive. I never got a collar for my dog there, but I was about to, but never got to it, because NONE of the collars were nice and soft, the people working there are nice, but I can't give it a full five stars, because it is pretty expensive, and not amazing quality, but it still has a lot of things that your pet will need, and this is a store that you can always find easily, so if you are in a rush to get something for your pet, this is a pretty good store for it. I usually love Petco and have nothing but good experiences until this week. My daughter was gifted a plecostemus. It died within a day so we went to Petco Encinitas and got her two new ones. We talked to the sales person about the size of the tank and he advised us to get the tiny sized plecos. I was concerned because I saw a dead pleco floating in the tank but we took the plecos home. They were dead before we arrived. Ok, fish die. I understand, I even used to work in a pet store. But when I went back the new sales associate was rude and refused to replace the fish in accordance with their 30 day fish return policy. I saw the entire tank the plecos came from was closed off and she told me the fish were all sick (so I paid for 2 sick fish) but she said they cannot replace the two tiny plecos I already bought for my daughter because my tank isn't the right "setup." We already had purchased a brand new tank, gravel, accessories and spend over $100 for these tiny plecos. She associate was cold and not at all apologetic to my daughter about her fish (my daughter cried over these fish). In addition, she asked me who sold me the fish and snickered with her coworker when I told her (basically trashing her own coworker right in front of a customer which was super unprofessional). If the sales associate had been a bit kinder and more professional I wouldn't be writing a negative review. read more

We came to Petco a week before getting our new puppy. We have never had a puppy so young so we had many questions about food, treats and potty training. Matthew was extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. He gave us so many tips on feeding, potty training even gave us behavioral advise. My husband and I couldn't be happier with what he's taught us and we feel he is very trusting so we will be going back here if we have any questions regarding our puppy. Made an appointment for my pet on Monday... They called and canceled and said their scheduler "messed up." Then I called on Tuesday and made an appointment for my pet. The girl did not sound very happy to even be grooming dogs but I made the appointment for 1130 anyways. I arrived at 11:40, 10 minutes late & stood at the counter for four minutes. When she finally came out she told me I was too late and she would not take my dog to groom that she was too behind in her schedule as it was. Not only did she tell me she wouldn't take my dog but she said it in a very rude manner. The whole experience was ridiculous and I would never go back!!! read more

My friends and I went into Pet Co to buy some fish for our friends birthday. When we asked a lady with Blue hair to help us, she asked us "Are you guys 18, because you don't look like it". Both of us were 20. Then she refused to sell us the fish, saying we needed to wait 4-6 weeks for the water in a small 20 gallon tank to be suitable for the fish. She also said that she wouldn't be surprised at all if the fish died within a week. We waited till she left then went back in the store and a nice man helped us get the fish. And just a FYI, all the fish are perfectly healthy 3 weeks later. read more

Purpose of Vetco was to be able to walk in for vaccines but now people have to schedule an appointment and they are 3 to 4 weeks out. I will take my business to a local veterinarian because they will be able to provide service within 2 days. read more

I am in this store every few days for crickets for our bearded dragon. Keyoni (sp?) is always so helpful and patient with my son. He lets him hold different critters and actually takes the time to talk about the animals. You can tell he really loves them and loves sharing his knowledge with the kids. read more

I am sad to say I won't be able to take our dogs back to the grooming department here because my husband, I and our two dogs absolutely loved them. We are moving out of state, so returning would be impossible but if you are looking for a groomer they are amazing. We have two dogs: 1) pure bred Siberian husky female, who is a runner and escape artist and 2) a Irish terrier basset hound mix male who is a little chicken. Both our good dogs but definitely have their own personalities and this Petco was great with respecting those personalities, loving on them, keeping them safe and doing a great grooming on them. All I can say is thank you Petco and that you won't regret trusting them with your fur family either. read more

I have never seen a store before that tries so hard NOT to sell you something. I just had them refuse to sell me 3 panda Cory fish because I didn't know the name of the black fish in my daughter's tank. Even though we have 3 albino Cory fish in there already that we bought from that store. When I didn't know the answer, she dumped the fish right back in the tank. This is the third time an employee there refused to sell me fish. I willl never go there again for anything and we have a lot of pets. read more

Ah...so this is where Petco is now! I must say the store is very clean and nice and the employees that I encountered were very friendly and seemed genuinely interested in their jobs. I had to bring back a couple of fish that didn't make it; something that I've never done in my 20+ years of having fish, but alas. The girl at checkout told me that I could get a refund without a water sample but that I couldn't exchange them for new ones - which was all I wanted to do at that stage anyways - but now I know! While I was perusing the store to check it out that girl that works in the Aquatics came over and said she was talking to the girl up front and they were a bit baffled on why the fish had died (as was I, since my original fish were still alive and swimming) so we chatted a bit trying to trouble-shoot. Without a water sample there wasn't much we could figure out; but the fact that both ladies were concerned and interested in my woes was a nice feeling. I ended up leaving with some clearance toys for the dog and a new Betta (for a different tank). While I was there I also overheard one of the Groomers talking to a customer about how he didn't feel he should groom the dog due to what sounded like a pretty bad infection of his paw. He seemed really concerned and was advising the customer to get him over to his vet to have it looked it instead of having him groomed that day. I left with such a great feeling (and a smile) knowing that the employees here really seemed to care about the animals and were friendly to boot. I've had some very iffy experiences at other Petco's in the past so this was an awesome change of pace. read more
