genuinely cannot say enough good things about Dr. Campbell and the entire team at VEG. Our dog, Remi, ended up needing emergency abdominal surgery for an intestinal obstruction, and it was an incredibly stressful and emotional experience. From the moment we arrived until we left, the care we received was exceptional. Dr. Campbell was incredible. I had a lot of questions and concerns, and not once did she make me feel rushed, dismissed, or like I was being difficult. She would sit down with me, explain what she was seeing, what our options were, and why she was recommending what she was recommending. She was patient, thorough, articulate, and confident without ever being condescending. I was having an extremely difficult time with the decision to put Remi through surgery, and she gave me the information I needed without ever pressuring me. I remember telling my wife that if Remi had to have surgery, I was incredibly grateful Dr. Campbell was the one taking care of her. The surgery went extremely well. Dr. Campbell found and removed the obstruction, and thankfully Remi's intestines were healthy. Afterward, she took the time to explain what she found, how Remi did, what to expect during recovery, and even discussed an unrelated finding so we could monitor it in the future. There are people who are technically excellent at what they do, and there are people who are excellent at taking care of the human being on the other side of the exam table. Dr. Campbell is both. Benji was also incredible. His focus was on making sure I was okay during an extremely difficult night. He checked on me constantly, went out of his way to ask if there was anything he could do, and always seemed to show up at the right time with a positive attitude and some reassurance. His kindness was genuine, and those small gestures made a much bigger difference than he probably realizes. Theresa took amazing care of Remi after surgery. She was incredibly patient, kind, and sweet with her. It was obvious that Remi was with someone who genuinely cared about her comfort and recovery. Theresa patiently answered all of our questions, kept us informed, and gave us a lot of peace of mind. Natalie was fantastic as well. She carefully went through the estimates with me and made sure everything was clearly explained. While I was away, she even took photos of Remi and sent them to me so I could see that she was doing okay. At the end, Natalie found a roughly $200 credit that was owed back to us and made sure it was refunded. After such a significant and unexpected veterinary bill, that level of transparency gave me a lot of confidence that Remi's care was truly the priority, not simply maximizing the bill. I also want to recognize everyone whose names I unfortunately didn't get. Especially in the beginning, I was so worried about Remi that remembering names was about the last thing on my mind. The surgical team was amazing. They kept me informed every step of the way, explained what was happening, what was normal, what to expect, and how Remi was doing. After Remi came out of surgery, they did everything they could to reassure me and make me feel better--even while immediately preparing for another surgery. Their compassion during what was obviously an incredibly busy night meant a lot. There was also a nurse who cared for Remi after surgery whose name I unfortunately didn't get. She was incredible. I had a lot of questions, and she patiently answered every one of them. She made sure Remi was constantly checked on and did everything she could to keep her comfortable while she recovered. I wish I had gotten everyone's names because there are more people who deserve to be recognized individually. Every person we encountered, from start to finish, treated Remi and our family with kindness and compassion. This was one of the hardest experiences I've had with Remi, but I never once felt like we were going through it alone. I trusted this team with a member of my family, and I would do so again without hesitation. 1 star Extremely disappointing experience. I brought my dog, my Baby Teddy to this ER because he was clearly in significant pain and his condition was getting worse. He was jumping, biting at the affected area, keeping his tail down, having difficulty walking, and eventually having difficulty eating. I left feeling that the diagnosis was essentially a guess rather than a thorough effort to determine what was actually causing his pain. The treatment did not help, and Teddy continued to get worse. I called back today because I was extremely concerned and needed help. During the call, the staff member actually hung up on me. I called back and specifically asked to speak with the manager. I was told the manager was "in a meeting," and she refused to come to the phone. Being hung up on when you are desperately trying to get help for my dog, my son, who is still suffering was extremely upsetting and completely unacceptable to me. I paid for emergency veterinary care expecting a thorough evaluation, answers, compassion, and appropriate follow-up. Instead, I am still trying to figure out what is wrong with my dog, my baby, while he continues to be in pain. I understand that not every veterinary case has an immediate answer. What I cannot accept is the lack of follow-up, the way my concerns were handled, and being hung up on after paying for emergency care. Teddy is not just a pet. I brought in my senior cattle dog mix Skyler on a Sunday night at 8pm. His vitals were immediately checked, and he was seen by a doctor promptly. She addressed his abscess, which had burst, causing blood and pus to flow down his chest area. The staff were professional, friendly and kind. I appreciated that they were attentive not only to the patient, but also to parents and other dogs present for emotional support. (I brought along Skyler's sister Scarlet who is a 2 year old dachshund mix.) They generously offered water and snacks to parents in addition to a blanket for Scarlet after noticing she was cold. In total, the visit took 3 hours, since Sky needed to be sedated. We returned 3 days after to remove his drain, which was done gently and at no extra charge. I brought my cockatiel here a few weeks ago. I didn't have high hopes bringing a bird to a large strip mall vet center but they exceeded my expectations. The staff were all great. I'm sure it's not an easy job. Almost everyone walking in there is so worried for their pet they're about ready to tear someone's head off. All the staff were great. They put her in a warm incubator with O2 pumped it which I thought was nice. What I thought was really good was that the vet was able to get on a call with an avian vet and get advice. Knowledgeable care for birds is hard to find and even avian vets know so little compared to what is known about dogs & cats. It's impossible for an emergency vet center to staff an avian vet so I thought it was great that they had access to one. AFAIK, the nearest avian vet is about a 40 minute drive away near Mission Bay. Two negatives. Being a 24/7 emergency vet, services are more expensive. Diagnostic tests and X-rays were about 2X what I paid at another vet for blood work and X-rays a year ago. Also, I was there for around 3 hours before they were ready to do the diagnostics. Sadly, by that time she was too weak to survive the tests and passed away shortly thereafter. However, I think that even if I had teleported to an avian vet, it wouldn't have made a difference in this situation. Afterwards, they were able to help take care of the final arrangements so I didn't have to deal with that myself. That was very helpful. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again. read more

I brought my little fur-baby to VEG several hours after a different vet who we hadn't seen before misdiagnosed an issue with his eye. This was my first experience with VEG, and they were terrific. Dr. Oller and the team examined my little dog's right eye, which had begun bothering him in the late afternoon and had become swollen and red. Dr. Oller's finding: a scratch on the cornea. Dr. Oller prepared a plan of treatment and after-care -- which included wearing the dreaded cone -- and which I accepted and followed. By morning, my doggie's eye was already looking better. We followed the course of after-care until his regular vet, who we went to for follow-ups, said the eye was fully healed. At VEG, everyone I interacted with and everyone I saw and heard interacting with another family who'd come in with their little dog for an urgent matter, demonstrated heart, compassion and caring that far exceeded my expectations. Hopefully, my little fur-baby won't need emergency care again, but if he does, I won't hesitate to bring him to VEG. I highly recommend VEG for emergency pet care. read more

We have a little lop bunny who doesn't drink as much water as she should, so we've been to VEG Encinitas 3 times for gastrointestinal (GI) emergencies. Each emergency happened during the night shift, but everyone at VEG was so kind and helpful, from front-of-house to the vet techs to the doctors. We really felt that everyone wanted to help our bunny get better through her 2 overnight stays and 1 outpatient treatment. What I really appreciate about VEG is their: 1. Open floor model - We were able to stay with our bunny throughout each visit, which really helped our peace of mind. I like to think that our bunny also appreciated us being nearby during her lab tests too. 2. Transparency - The VEG staff took super detailed notes on our bunny's condition and care, and they emailed us all the docs afterwards. The documentation has been super helpful to our primary vet and to us. 3. Accessibility, especially for exotic pets - VEG is open 24/7 and they have experience with responding to bunny GI issues. The reality is- no one wants to find themself here. But things happen and thank goodness that VEG exists to provide 24/7 care to the most special parts of our family. Our little bun was struggling to eat properly. After a sluggish evening, we decided to bring him in to VEG. They came as a recommendation of La Mesa Pet Specialty, who didn't have an exotics doctor overnight. VEG was clear that they also aren't exotic specialist but they do see their fair share of rabbits. Mookie was treated with great care and given fluids to get him through the night before we took him to his regular doctor. The team was very kind and clearly loves the animals they treat. We sadly witnessed a family losing their cat and the team was so respectful and caring to the family. While the emergency visit cost about $200, they show you estimates prior to performing any services. We just had them do fluids and critical care and left the remaining work to be done by his primary. If your family finds themselves here, I hope things turn out well for your animal! read more

If I could give this place 10 stars I would. I brought my kitty in yesterday morning because he was repeatedly vomiting and foaming at the mouth. I called ahead and received a text link to fill out the intake paperwork and once I arrived we were seen immediately by the doctor and vet tech. Dr. Salazar and nurses Andrea and Samantha were absolutely wonderful to me and my kitty. They were very thorough and took the time to explain to me everything they were doing and what could be wrong. You can tell that they love what they do, have huge hearts for animals, and are truly passionate about veterinary medicine. They treated my kitty like he was their own. Because my kitty needed an ultrasound, the radiologist was not going to be in until later in the afternoon, so they allowed my kitty to stay there during the day and set him up with a nice little condo complete with a cozy bed, blanket, and litterbox. The little things they do to keep the fur babies comfortable meant to much to me. They have the Feliway diffuser in all the exam rooms (its a pheromone that helps calm nervous kitties), they have sound machines to play nature noises, and will even play animal videos for them if needed. I have never seen anything like it. When we were discharged, I was given very detailed notes on how to continue my kitty's care at home. Last week our beloved, energetic orange cat Spencer suddenly became very lethargic, was cold and seemed to be breathing with great effort. We took him to VEG and immediately a doctor and two helpers rushed to examine him as we looked on. They gave him oxygen, drew blood, then took him into the back for x-rays. The entire staff was professional, personable and empathetic. During the exam, Dr. Erica Butler talked us through what she was doing and thinking. When the x-rays showed a mass (probably liquid) in his lungs, she explained that it was likely one of two things - neither one good: a heart problem, or internal bleeding. What a high level of care. It is a very open and transparent emergency clinic. We went straight into the treatment area our dog pet and the staff were immediately available. The vets are experienced emergency care specialists. They are collegial and diligent. Our dog had a minor procedure done and we were home within 3 hours. This is higher level emergency care than a normal clinic, prices are definitely high. If you have pet insurance and it's an urgent problem, I'd recommend this place. read more
