Brought our 3 year old maltipoo to see Dr. Schneider after she had two seizures and agreed to infectious disease testing. Somehow Dr. Schneider missed that one of the tests was positive for Valley Fever and instead of putting her on an anti-fungal, he put her on an immunosuppressant which allowed the fungus to quickly spread throughout her body and lungs. Our dog's primary vet reached out to Dr. Schneider several times during the last few weeks of our dog's life via e-mail/phone but Dr. Schneider was too busy to discuss her care. It was horrifying seeing her struggle to breathe once she was admitted. They convinced me that it was in her best interest euthanize her. I will never forget the way she sat up in terror as she was euthanized. She wanted to live. When Dr. Schneider called a week later he was cavalier about the situation and it was obvious that he did not care. It's my belief that my dog would still be alive if I had never taken her to see Dr. Schneider. It's been almost a year and we still miss her everyday.

I've been bringing my senior dog, Sundance (18 years old), to the Veterinary Specialty Hospital of San Diego in Sorrento Valley to see Internist Dr. Shawn Chandrakumar and his assistant, Mac. Sundance has multiple chronic conditions, and we recently discovered an abdominal mass, so his care requires a very thoughtful, balanced approach. Dr. Chandrakumar and Mac have been exceptional--clear, compassionate, and genuinely committed to Sundance's quality of life. They've helped me navigate difficult decisions with patience and kindness, and even followed up after appointments. Costs have been very reasonable, with some charges even waived when procedures were split. I'm deeply grateful for the outstanding care Sundance has received. I hope this review helps anyone facing similar complex health concerns with their pet.

After visiting urgent care, we were referred to Veterinary Specialty Hospital (VHS) on Sorrento Valley Rd. The urgent care team was able to book the appointment for us, and when we arrived, the staff was already fully prepared. They were informed about our situation and knew exactly what needed to be monitored. The triage nurse came out promptly to assess our 6-year-old Goldendoodle and confirmed all the details. He required emergency surgery for a flipped stomach (GDV), and the team acted quickly. The doctor thoroughly explained the recommended treatments and tests, and once we approved everything, they provided a clear cost estimate for the planned services. Time was critical, and they had Cooper in surgery very quickly. We were able to pick him up the next day. He was understandably tired but already on the road to recovery. Now, seven days later, he's eating well, attentive, and almost completely back to his normal self. VHS on Sorrento Valley Rd was incredibly compassionate, professional, and understanding during such a stressful time. We are so grateful for their swift action and excellent care. I would absolutely recommend their hospital to anyone in need of emergency veterinary services.

Almost 11-year old GSD hadn't been doing too well. This center is a regular vet referral only center, or emergency room service. After our normal vet referred us to neurology, we were able to make an appointment in a reasonable amount of time. Dr. Schneider is a neurologist on staff here and is incredibly knowledgeable and kind. After his recommended course of care, my pup seems to be doing a bit better and trending upward a bit.

I cannot say enough good things about Veterinary Specialty Hospital - San Diego. They recently diagnosed my dog, Sam, with a large liver mass. From the very beginning, the team handled everything with incredible care and compassion. They walked me through the diagnosis, explained the options in detail, and shared their expert opinions without ever making me feel pressured. The surgery itself was handled flawlessly. They were delicate, precise, and professional -- and they successfully removed the entire liver mass. Sam feels like a completely new dog now. She has made a full recovery, the mass is completely gone, and she's happier and healthier than ever. I am beyond thankful for this wonderful team and the exceptional care they provided. Special thanks to Brooke, Dr. Kraska, Randi, and Coranna -- every single interaction I had with you made me feel supported and confident that Sam was in the best hands possible. If you are ever in need of specialty veterinary care, I highly recommend VSH San Diego. They quite literally gave Sam her life back, and I'll be forever grateful.

When I had an emergency with my beloved doggie (in the middle of the night of course) this hospital was open and super close to me. Bear was having severe difficulty breathing and would have died that night if I couldn't have found any place to take him. Needless to say I'm very thankful for this hospital. Dr Gold figured out partially what was going on with Bear within a few hours. And explained not only the diagnosis, but his reasoning for it and showed me a short article to read on the subject. It was super difficult to leave my doggie that night, but I was confident he was in good hands. More testing was done the following morning/afternoon to further diagnose by Dr Cheng. Overall my Bear stayed two nights before he was well enough to come home to recover. Both doctors were very informative and empathetic throughout the entire process. Upon pick up of my doggie the nurse was very thorough explaining his medications and discharge instructions. The staff up front were very friendly and helpful. You can tell everyone that works here has a genuine love for animals. Hopefully I won't have any more emergencies with my doggie. But if I do this is where I will take him. In the meantime I will be shopping for pet insurance to hopefully keep any unforeseen emergencies mostly covered.

A Deep Thank You to Dr. Pike! A Remarkable Veterinary Surgeon! I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to someone who quite literally helped save my service dog's life: Dr. Pike, Bandit's surgeon. When Bandit was diagnosed with multiple mast cell tumors, the fear and uncertainty were overwhelming. The thought of losing her was devastating. So when I asked around San Diego for a trusted veterinary surgeon, I paid close attention when four different people recommended the same name: Dr. Pike. As you can imagine, he has a long waiting list because his reputation for excellence is well-earned. But his team at VSH Sorrento Valley understood that cancer doesn't wait. They got Bandit and me in quickly, and I'll always be grateful for that urgency and compassion. From our first conversation, Dr. Pike brought a sense of confidence, clarity, and calm that I didn't even realize I needed. He treated Bandit not just as a patient, but as a cherished partner and acknowledged the deep bond we share. While skin tumor removals may not be the most technically complex surgeries he performs, he approached it with the same seriousness and care you'd expect for something far more intricate. It meant the world to me. He answered all my questions with patience, never once brushing aside my fears or emotions. He collaborated closely with Bandit's primary vet, tailored her recovery plan to her sensitivities, and made sure I was fully prepared for every step of the process. Thanks to Dr. Pike, Katie, and the entire care team at VSH Sorrento Valley, Bandit's tumors were removed with clean margins and she's now back to hiking, napping in her favorite spots, and making me laugh with her goofy, spirited self. I'll never forget what Dr. Pike has done for us. His surgical precision gave Bandit more time and his kindness gave me hope when I needed it most. Thank you, Dr. Pike. Your work makes a difference in ways that go far beyond the operating room. With endless gratitude, Kate & Bandit

They Lie to you upfront what the hospital costs will be AFTER the emergency surgery. The vets act very sincere and give you visiting hours and keep talking to you in person. However, when our baby was readmitted a week later for fluids after 10 days in the hospital, a technician was the only one to show up when Mimi was discharged. A few days later after I called an independent person to end the misery, the only contact I received from Sorrento Valley was a final bill for over $ 3,000 (unneeded Lepto test and another stupid last ditch test). Why put us through that? No note, no apologies, nothing after all of them saying how much they cared for our beloved Mimi. She was such a good patient too. Just wanting to make everyone happy. Just a BS corporation. Really a shame to bilk people for their life savings or put them in debt. Just be honest with people. Don't string them along. Really awful values. I feel like I want to rebel somehow against this type of genuine trauma they put our dogs and us through. Thank you for reading.

Khaleesi has been in pain for the last three days and it was coming from her tail so here we are again to figure out what we can do to get this under control. I'm always grateful to the staff and the doctors here and Khaleesi gets excellent care.

This place is great. Great customer service. I took my baby in for a second opinion because she got very sick unfortunately she got sent into their ICU & I had to put her down because it was far too late to treat her failed liver but they treated her like she was their own baby. Gave me all the time I needed with her.

We made the call to VEG and they gave us excellent advice over the phone and the team greeted us at 4am. They were in the best of spirits even though we were a mess and our poor dog was seizing in pain. Dr.Day and the team were absolutely amazing!! They helped us remain calm and made a quick action plan. Everyone we interacted with was wonderful and the staff really makes VEG what it is! Thank you!! Ironically I've spent the past 5 years designing veterinary clinics and specialty hospitals, and the owners had a strong desire to maintain the separation from public facing to the treatment areas. I must say as someone experiencing having a pet emergency, being able to be in the open treatment area was the reason we felt so satisfied with the care. We were visually connected to our baby boy and got to be a part of every step of his treatments. It made us feel at ease, and felt entirely different (in the best way) than we've ever had at other veterinary practices. Design matters and can really make a huge impact- so props to the team for going with the open plan! I hope to see more of this in the future, transparency builds trust. Goodwork VEG!

In the beginning of March, on a Thursday, I noticed my cat wasn't acting like himself. He was trying to urinate near the litter box but just stood there, almost statue-like. The entire staff was welcoming and supportive during a very stressful moment. They took the time to listen, assess my cat, and explain my options clearly. What truly stood out to me was how much they genuinely cared--not just about my pet, but about me as well. I cannot give enough credit to Dr. Batiari, who went above and beyond to help me. Not only did they provide guidance on my cat's condition, but they also took the extra step to connect me with the right clinic based on what I could afford. That level of compassion and advocacy is rare, and I will never forget it. The staff also helped walk me through different payment options, which made a huge difference during such an overwhelming time. Thank you, VEG, for your kindness, your patience, and your dedication. You truly made a difficult situation feel manageable, and I'm forever grateful.

We have lived in Vet's offices for a year due to my dog having an autoimmune disease that destroyed his platelets and a septic staph infection, along with other terrible things. The year of high dose steroids has caused extensive issues for my dog (some my vet believed were neurological) and we were trying to figure out solutions to these. Dr. Geiger ran a neurological assessment on my dog for about 45 minutes after the tech asked some really poignant and thorough questions. I was really impressed with her as well. The remaining almost 2 hours consisted of Dr. Geiger going over every single thing you could imagine. Making determinations that it is not X or X because we can manually move Y which doesn't cause pain, explaining things about his neurological functioning vs mechanical functioning in a way a layman could understand. We made a plan to schedule a CT, thank god not an MRI. He felt those would give us the answers we need to rule out other causes. We are going to get some advanced panels done after he is completely off Prednsione and we will meet back up with Dr. Geiger when a clearer picture has evolved. VCA should be thrilled to have this Neurologist- thoroughly impressed and will refer all friend's dogs to him directly.

Not so bad if you're only in there for 15 min but after an hour, you have to open the door just to breathe. 2) The TV in the lobby is too loud. The people working the counter can hear YOU through the glass partition, but are not aware that your ears are competing with the TV just to hear what they're saying back at you. Another customer came in just after us with a dog whose eye had popped out of the socket. :-( They also had difficulty hearing anything from the counter staff thanks to that TV. Maybe a nice, quiet video loop of relaxing/calming scenery, flowing water, etc.? I can't hear over David Attenborough's voice and that's saying a lot since he's a fairly soft-spoken guy.

When I described Peanut's symptoms to the front desk staff, she immediately tried to assume it was a seizure, even though that was never part of her symptoms. After 45 minutes of waiting, the staff told us the doctor was ready and asked us to hand over Peanut. We were confused as to why we couldn't be present for the initial exam, but we complied. Another 30 minutes passed, and when we asked for an update, we were told the doctor was with another patient and Peanut was "next." Then Peanut vomited blood again, so she was taken back immediately and again we were told she was next. We waited another hour, and by this time it was 12:30 AM with still no care provided. At that point, we were frustrated and concerned for her safety, so we decided to leave and find another urgent care. We found WAG Animal ER, only 8 minutes away, with the same $100 exam fee and no wait. The difference was night and day. The staff there was kind, compassionate, and professional. Peanut was seen by a doctor within 5 minutes. And the Dr even called us 3 days later to check on her status.

While I'm grateful that VCAs offer 24-hr service, I wasn't pleased with my recent Internal Medicine consult at the VCA Mission Valley location. Our dog has GI issues that we're still learning about. So, I brought him in with an ongoing bout of vomiting and regurgitation, not knowing how much the consult would be. My fault for not checking that first. To sit in the chair with my dog and briefly speak with the vet alone was $305. I nearly screamed in shock when I saw this. I should've known better and looked at other offices beforehand, but this spot came recommended. The nurse greeted me first and asked some questions before Dr. Cahn arrived. She sat with us for about 10 minutes and our experience with her was great. She took my dog to get examined while we waited for Dr. Cahn. I assumed my responses would be shared with him before he'd come in to speak with us. Instead, he walked in a few minutes later and asked me to share everything I had just shared with the nurse, down to the book of Genesis. I felt like a broken record, repeating the same long story and wasting valuable time. When it came down to planning, he just said to keep doing what I was doing but extending his meds from 7 to 12 days. Had I known that was the answer I would've called and asked for a prescription refill from home. I'm not saying Dr. Cahn wasn't friendly and willing to listen, but I wasn't offered any new insights into my dog's new situation. The office took fecal samples because my dog's results came back inconclusive during his emergency visit a few days prior. But even then I should've just brought him to turn in fecal samples and not had the consultation and saved time and money. And lastly, the emergency vet didn't have any of the meds we needed except for 1; so we had to wait to get his meds through a mail Rx. We asked if we could stop into another VCA location to pick up his prescription somewhere else and they said that wasn't possible. Just disappointing overall. There are other emergency vets in town; Hopefully I won't need to take my dog again, but if I do, I'm going somewhere else.

And despite Chief overcoming all other illnesses and injuries throughout his life, he unfortunately couldn't overcome the only fight that he had with the ravages of cancer. Three miles away from me, however, is a much larger, corporate-run, emergency animal hospital. Although it's closer, I knew its prices would be more expensive than ER4PETS. I only wish I had known about that hospital much sooner. It's a small emergency animal hospital, intimate in its setting. If you're not focused in looking for it while you're driving, you'll pass it. The crowd in the hospital has been sparse during my visits while it had Chief under its care. My arrivals into the hospital have been greeted much more quickly than even groomers' shops that I've taken Chief to. I brought my dog in because he was panting heavily and seemed restless. At that time, he was still active and able to walk and run normally. After the examination, the hospital performed X-rays, blood work, and an ultrasound, and I was charged about $1,700. Despite all of these tests, they said they could not determine what was wrong with him. Even so, they prescribed antibiotics and discharged us. When we returned home, my dog's condition became dramatically worse. He stopped eating and drinking, became extremely lethargic, and within 24 hours he could barely move and was unable to walk on his own. I called the hospital and was told this was not normal, so I brought him back immediately. However, instead of trying to investigate what might have gone wrong, the hospital insisted that I would need to pay again just for bringing my dog back . The veterinarian suggested they could prescribe painkillers if I wanted. I explained that my dog had been walking and active when I first brought him in, and that the only symptom he had was panting. After all the tests and procedures performed at this hospital, he left unable to walk. Yet the staff still could not explain what had happened and continued suggesting additional medications. The most concerning part of this experience was the veterinarian's unprofessional conduct. When I expressed that I did not think it was fair to pay for another recheck under these circumstances, her attitude immediately changed. She insisted that my dog's current condition had nothing to do with their treatment. Feeling frustrated and unheard, I decided to take my dog home and seek another opinion instead of continuing treatment there. Later, my second veterinarian requested my dog's medical report from Escondido Veterinary Emergency. I learned that the report included details of the argument I had with the hospital and quoted my words. Including personal disputes with a pet owner in a medical record is highly unprofessional. Medical reports should document only the patient's medical condition, findings, and treatment. Recording and sharing personal arguments in a professional report can unfairly influence other veterinarians reviewing the case. As of today, Escondido Veterinary Emergency has not yet sent me a copy of this report, despite having paid $1,700 for the tests and procedures. I strongly encourage other pet owners to think carefully before bringing their animals here.

I wish I could give them 100 stars! I was there 16.5 hours…read morewith my 5lb Japanese Chin, Mei Mei, who unbeknownst to me, had pneumonia and I am in awe of the vets and techs there. I've never gotten to watch them work like this or for this length of time. The Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) is something that I've never seen before and I am so impressed. It's open concept so everyone being treated is all in the same room and they let you stay with your pet the entire time, even during surgery. They even have rooms that you can sleep in! They let you lay on the floor and hold your baby, they get on the floor to help your baby. I couldn't stay with Mei touching her or even letting her see me because of the spaz attack she has when she sees me which causes her to gasp for air, but they got me a padded bench to sit next to her chamber, close but out of sight. I watched them do a surgery on a cat, a surgery on a dog, leap tables to get to a dog who was seizing, to hold him safe while another tech skidded across the floor with meds like out of a movie, I saw them sprint across the room to stop a large dog from hurting himself, deal with sobbing pet parents (me), carry a massive pig in, x ray that massive pig, treat a ferret, treat a dog for rattlesnake bite, and all the other stuff- it was non. Stop. all with calm yet fierce professionalism and kindness and caring. It takes some special people to work in this field! Competent af. These people know what they are doing. I came flying through their door at 9am with Mei in significant breathing distress like a bat out of hell. I practically fell through the door. I thought she would die in the car on the way over there. I called to let them know I was on my way and they were ready for me when I got there. They shouted "triage!" And 4 people rushed over and immediately put Mei on oxygen and went to work troubleshooting. They put her in the oxygen chamber right away. They noticed that when she saw me she lost her shit and started gasping like crazy so they told me to hide to keep her calmer; and they were right. When I laid down on a bench and closed my eyes I awoke to the doctor putting a blanket on me and the nurse had left a pillow. The open concept allows drs and nurses to move quickly and freely and see everything and communicate things that they need. There were not curtains to block what was happening, no doors to get in the way, you see it all. I appreciated it because I like to KNOW. I want to SEE, otherwise how can you know they are doing it right? I highly, highly recommend them! Blessings on all the heir houses! Truly angels on earth. I owe them a debt I can never repay- they saved my Mei Dr Romy was our doctor and she even stayed late to make sure that Mei didn't get lost in the shuffle during shift change- and I'm talking hours late. If there was ever a vet that deserves donations and volunteers to help it's them. Donate! Volunteer! I am so grateful to them I can't recommend them enough!

I have been to VEG in Oceanside twice now, both times on weekends when my regular vet was closed,…read moreand I honestly could not be more grateful this place exists. Walking into an emergency vet is always stressful, but the staff here immediately made things feel calmer. Everyone at the front desk and the techs were kind, patient, and never made me feel rushed or silly for being worried. We saw Dr. Leah Sauerwein, and she was amazing. She explained everything in a way that actually made sense, talked through options, and made sure I felt comfortable with the plan. You can tell she really cares, not just about the pets, but about the owners too. That level of trust is huge when you are dealing with something unexpected. Both visits were smooth, professional, and compassionate from start to finish. I left feeling informed, supported, and confident in the care my pet received. I would absolutely come back if I ever needed emergency care again, and I would recommend this location to anyone in the area.
