I've been here twice over 4 months to get urgent emergency care for my minibernedoodle. Each time the staff has been very kind and helpful. You do have to wait for a bit as they triage based on emergency. It's also open in design so you can see other pets and their family members getting treated unless in one of their private rooms. I have been to the Encinitas as well as Otay Ranch locations in the past with my 14 year old Shih Tzu Molly and had positive experiences at both locations. When I came home from work this past Friday, my dog would not stop rubbing her ears and was crying. I knew that I would not make it to her regular vet before closing time and the closest VEG (to my location) was the Mission Valley location so I loaded Molly in my car and we made the short drive to Mission Valley. The VEG Mission Valley location is just across the parking lot from Mimi's Cafe and was super easy to find. We walked in and someone immediately came over to triage Molly before it was the doctor's turn to give her a full exam. Dr. Bronstein was awesome and explained everything in great detail. While I was waiting for Molly's treatment plan, an emergency came in and it was all hands on deck to help the dog out. Everyone ran over to help and not one person working there complained. I could tell that they really care about animals. When the doctor was finished, he came over and apologized for the wait and I said not to worry about it since that was a priority issue. He gave me the treatment plan which I approved and it was just a short amount of time until I got the prescriptions and receipt/medical notes (for insurance) and I was out the door. I would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Bronstein and the staff that helped me this past Friday evening for your kindness and for helping my "little one" out. Highly recommend! I had to take my dog in last night at 1:30 am. Every single person there was kind, helpful, and patient, with lots of empathy for me and my dog. They also very thoroughly go over the treatment plan. The price was totally reasonable for an emergency situation. I've been here twice so far, it's a very central emergency pet hospital for when your pet is ill. Just so you know, it appears to be a more modern and pricey place. I recommend you obtain pet insurance. Both times I've been here it was after hours and our vet was unavailable. The nice part about this place is that it's open concept and they try to include you as much as they can in the care process. If your pet is kept overnight there are some options of staying the night with your pet, which is wonderful. Our first time here our dog stopped eating and drinking, we did most of the tests but opted out of hospitalization since the price was steep. I think we spend about 3,000 +, our second time here we opted out of testing and got emergency IV + nausea meds for a little less than $ 600. They are transparent with pricing and if needed you can opt out of things and advocate for what you need based on the severity of the situation. Pets are family. My Princess Peach was seen immediately, triaged, and placed in an oxygen chamber, the only relief I'd seen of my girl in 24 hours. The Xrays came back quickly but with unfortunate news. Having other animals at home it was a priority for me that we all come to say goodbye, a request her care team supported. We were given as much time together as we needed, and my girl went peacefully in my arms. Everyone who I came in contact with on this day absolutely deserves to work here. I understand the load on their shoulders so I want to be fair because what they see on a routine basis is mentally and physically exhausting. I am being very generous with the 4 star rating because I really felt like hitting a 3. I do like that the facility is open concept so you get triaged in the middle of the room. It looks like Costco if you laid medical beds everywhere. I do appreciate the transparency but I wasn't impressed by all the inappropriate crosstalk I was picking up on amongst the vet techs. They weren't very mindful of concerned pet parent perception or even young kids. I saw one person come out of the surgery room behind a saloon door and they were joking around while showing off all the animal blood sprayed across their PPE. Not only did it look macabre but I also watched them degown then wander over to offer people snacks and water without washing their hands. My personal pet experience was exhausting but not terribly notable since I was only there for after hours urgent care needs. Just note that it's like a human ER--expect to spend all night out. I got in at 5pm and was discharged close to 11pm then I stood up watching my cat recover from sedation so I had to call off from work. It is what it is so be prepared. Overall, I trust the integrity of the facility but I just feel sorry for how burnt out and tired everyone looked. The Dr. (I don't want to smear their name) and all the techs were functionally performing... but they spoke like that sped up robot voice narrating the fine print on a medical commercial. I guess this is a sign to help out with staffing or offer wellness benefits so these people can meditate and get some rest. read more

I came here with my senior dog who was suffering from constipation and a chronic heart mumur. They were helping me with her enlarged heart, I paid them for an X ray and came in for a second day for the results. She received more treatment. I came in on a third day because her condition was worsening and two of the actual veterinarians (not the techs) looked at each other and then back at me as soon as I walked in. They were Judging me for coming back. Is that not what your services for? I want to keep my dog alive! Finally I got her to her usual vet in Tijuana and they performed an Enema on her immediately. Don't understand why this place didn't do that? They only gave her an injection for the pain of the constipation, and that nearly killed her. I spent over 1,700 dollars. Well by the time she received help for the constipation in Tijuana the next day, she only lived two more days, and her heart gave out and she passed. The vet who broke the news to me over the phone broke out in a sob, showing me what real compassion looks like. That was my 15 year old girl and I took it very hard. I even took down my original review in hopes I could change my mind and I haven't. I have been gifted a new dog since, and my goal is to never come back to this place. read more

Wow, how do I give this place 10 stars? I brought my dog in earlier today because he was limping and my primary vet was booked until next week. From the moment I walked in to the moment I left both my dog and I were very taken care of. Every tech and vet was so reassuring and compassionate. Before any procedures began a tech had explained all of the costs and procedures. She didn't pressure me to agree to any procedure or medications and even suggested that I can refuse any procedure, medication, or even talk to the doctor for an alternative. My dog was seen by Dr. Small and she was so great I wish she was our primary vet. Never did I once feel like I was being rushed. She took her time to explain everything to me and even asked multiple times if I had any questions and made me feel like my dog was her only patient. The day finally came that we needed to take our Pom to the ER for an injury and I was panicking not knowing where to go in the middle of the night. We made the call to VEG and they gave us excellent advice over the phone and the team greeted us at 4am. They were in the best of spirits even though we were a mess and our poor dog was seizing in pain. Dr.Day and the team were absolutely amazing!! We were visually connected to our baby boy and got to be a part of every step of his treatments. It made us feel at ease, and felt entirely different (in the best way) than we've ever had at other veterinary practices. Seriously the best animal ER experience I've had! I wish we had VEG for humans. But more importantly, I'm so glad it was there for my Peach. She started to strain and pee blood so upon recommendation I took her to Dr. Cain at VEG Mission Valley late in the evening. I could not be happier with the care she received. From the moment we walked in everyone was so kind and helpful. They let us stay with her the whole time, they told us what they were doing and why, and they just seemed like people who really cared about animals. It's never easy to see pets in pain, but the VEG staff were so calm. Dr. Cain was so attentive even before we came talking to us on the phone. About a year ago, I unexpectedly lost my sweet dog, Honeybear. Earlier that day, her vet told us she was bleeding internally and there was nothing they could do. I brought my bearded dragon in on a Sunday after she ingested a foil candy wrapper, and we are incredibly grateful for the care she received from the entire staff. Dr. Lance Day was outstanding. He spoke with me twice over the phone before we arrived, answered all of my questions, offered reassurance, and even provided a general cost estimate. What stood out to me most was although he doesn't specialize in reptiles, he was very innovative and did some quick research and figured out what to do on the spot, saving my lizard. He was very creative in his problem-solving. He created a tool using available equipment (tubes, tweezers, medical tape). He measured the x ray where it showed the roil wrapper and then put measurement marks in the tool, and although they didn't have a scope camera small enough- Dr Day was able to get the foil out ( with no camera) -- he used the x-ray photo, measurements, and felt around on my lizards abdomen and was able to safely extract the foil, blindly, with no camera guiding him. This avoided my bearded dragon needing surgery. His focus, care, and attention to detail made me feel completely confident in his treatment. Thanks to him, my bearded dragon was treated successfully and discharged the same day. While there was a longer wait due to ER triage, the outcome and quality of care mattered most, and I am very thankful to the entire team. read more

When I say this was the best ER Vet, I truly mean it. I came with my dog who was experiencing an allergic reaction and was greeted quickly, nicely and attentively. The staff was WONDERFUL, from the customer service coordinators, vet techs, to the doctor, every single person showed my dog the care and love I would hope to receive. I brought my cat in expecting professional, clean, and attentive care--especially for an emergency vet--and instead had one of the most uncomfortable and frustrating experiences. First off, the hygiene was extremely concerning. I saw staff using their personal phones with the same gloves they were using to handle animals, including my cat. No one was washing their hands or wearing face masks on a procedure where there are open wounds. At one point, I even witnessed a glove fall on the FLOOR, get picked up, and then used on another pet. That alone is completely unacceptable. On top of that, I waited nearly 3 hours for what should have been a simple 10-minute procedure. There was zero communication during that time. A doctor briefly diagnosed my cat, but after that, I had no idea who was actually treating him. No one introduced themselves, explained their role, or gave me any clarity on who was handling my pet. That lack of transparency is really unsettling when it comes to your animal's care. I do appreciate that the staff seemed to care about the animals, but for nearly $800, I expected a much higher standard--especially proper hygiene and treatment from a qualified doctor throughout the process. This is an open concept pet hospital, meaning you are right in the middle of everything. The Pros: There is no mystery about what is happening, you're right there making decisions with the care team as things come up. There are areas to rest if needed, a bathroom with toiletries such as pads and disposable toothbrushes should you need them. The staff were very kind and understanding. The Cons: There is no mystery about what is happening. We were there late, and there were multiple animals that passed before they arrived or shortly after. There was one cat who had been hit by a car that was a bloody mess, but thankfully was going to be okay. There is a lot of cross chatter, staff talking and at times joking with one another from across the room. At first it upset me, but then you realize that they don't really have an alternative, they are constantly on the floor working from one patient to the other. Remeber, it's an open concept. To be honest, I wish more places were like this. I wish I could give them a 4.5, it's really a great concept, there is sufficient parking, the area is kind of hard to navigate and it's still a pricey visit compared to a regular vet visit, but all things considered, I will only be coming here for my emergency visits from now on. read more
