The thought of having my 4-year-old, 10.6 pound fur-baby undergo surgery to repair a luxating patella was a bit nerve-wracking for me. I did A LOT of research to find a veterinary surgeon who I could feel confident was the right choice. My search focused on credentials, experience, expertise, outcomes, and the entire patient and family experience. My findings kept leading me back to Dr. Farrell and his team at AOSSD/Blue Sky. I read all of the Yelp reviews --approximately 20 at that time and all but one was 5-star -- and I read enough of the 180-plus Google reviews at that time -- all 180-plus were five stars -- that I felt confident in bringing Izzy to Dr. Farrell at least for a consultation. Dr. Farrell and his team are everything I was hoping to find and more. They are genuinely passionate about helping their furry patients live their best lives, strive for great outcomes, communicate clearly and transparently throughout the process, care about creating a positive experience for their patients and patients' families, they are kind and they have heart. I was blown away by how they handled a life-or-death situation that was unfolding with a different patient during our consultation. When it became critical for the other patient to immediately go to a different nearby facility for a specialized service not provided at AOSSD, Dr. Farrell sent two staff members to go with the patient and their family to facilitate the patient's admission. OMG. Who does that??? That was when I knew with 100% certainty that Izzy would be in the right hands. My confidence was well-placed. This review is long overdue! I brought in my 2 year old Chihuahua in for rear leg surgery. She had lost all muscle mass and use of her back. We were worried that her active lifestyle wouldn't look the same after this injury. From the second we walked in the door we were greeted warmly, all staff and doctors were gentle and kind. They explained the procedure thoroughly , pre-care, aftercare, medications, exercise schedules and set expectations for after the surgery. We had a follow up exams and felt like we could call with any questions or concerns at anytime. I'm happy to report a full recovery and 100% quality of life after 5 months. She is back to all of her daily routines and has regrown all the muscle around her leg. I have known Dr. Farrell for years. He is a great surgeon. My issue a different surgeon here did a consult, but the surgeon blatantly told me he was too scared to do the specific surgery at this location due to the risk of complications. The diagnosis was confirmed by several other doctors including a board-certified vet that had been practicing for 30-plus years before the appointment. I don't think it was fair that I had to pay a consult for that considering that the surgeon was too scared to do the surgery. I was shocked by that but he told me that. I was a little surprised Dr. Farrell did not follow up either to be honest. I highly recommend Dr. Farrell and would use him for surgery on any of our dogs. My Shepard Mix, Perdix, had a very severe luxating patella on her right leg and minor on her left. Dr. Farrell and his team walked me through exactly what would be done during surgery and what recovery would entail. Sadly her left leg got worse while the right was healing but Dr. Farrell did amazing work on that one as well! Dr. Farrell and his team are amazing. As an owner of a dog that has now had 2 TPLOs (both legs both with Dr. Farrell) and 1 lateral suture in the span of 2 years, I would be lost without them. Our dog Baron had 2 large masses and our veterinarian Dr Bruce Lindsey referred us to Dr Farrell at Animal Outpatient Surgery of San Diego aka Blue Sky Veterinary Services. Dr Paul Farrell and his veterinary assistant Tina are a great team. Dr Farrell did an ultrasound of the mass and gave me a clear plan for surgery. It was a delicate surgery but Dr Farrell did an excellent job. He also charges much less than other vet hospitals (about half off the current rate of a specialty hospital). We can't thank Dr Farrell enough for helping our boy Baron. He is now 2 weeks post op and doing great! I can not sing my praises enough for this facility. We were recommended by our beloved vet and I understand why he speaks so highly of this staff. It's a small tight knit office who truly care about every animal that comes through their doors. The communication is exceptional and they leave no questions to the imagination. Our dog needed surgery on both of her back legs. A daunting and terrifying diagnosis for any pet parent. However the staff sat down with us clearly and slowly explained the process, the difference in the surgeries and made it simple to explain to others in layman's terms. They are thorough and that makes the difference I promise. You truly understand what is done and how before you put your trust in them. I don't even know where to begin with this review because there is so much GOODNESS to share!!! These guys are without a doubt, the best veterinary clinic I have ever been to. I consider them family now because of what they did for Olive. About two weeks ago, my little girl Olive, decided to climb a tree (she thinks she is a cat) and dislocated her hip. I took her straight to my local vet who informed me that she needed surgery. I called a few places, getting more and more discouraged at the lack of communication, and honesty about pricing...Was I really about to spend 6K on an emergency surgery? 6k that I do not have? I felt at a loss and completely guilt ridden. But then.... I called Blue Sky and they got back to me RIGHT AWAY (we are talking within minutes) not only did they get back to me, but the DOCTOR called me himself. We were on the phone for about 30-45 minutes. Paul instantly made me feel comfortable, assured, and informed. We went through the details of the accident, what needed to happen, the x-rays from my vet, etc. He gave me his full attention. The accident occurred on Thursday, and Olive was in surgery by Friday at 10AM. They even moved a few things around in order to see her. Again.. impressed. As soon as I walked into the door of the office, I felt at ease. Tina greeted me with a big smile (I was a wreck because Olive was in so much pain.) She made me feel better right away and was attentive to both of us. Tina sent me updates throughout the surgery (let me know when she was going into anesthesia, when she was coming out, etc) Again.. this is so unheard of in todays world that I was just in continuous awe and felt so comfortable during a very stressful time while I was waiting for her to come out of surgery. Thanks to Dr. Ferris and Tina, my Bedlington Terrier is still cancer-free and has all 4 legs, two years post surgery! Encore just turned 13 years old and can still run and jump like a pup! This place saved my dog and wallet. My dog needed a emergency splenectomy and nobody in the San Diego area would fit her in their schedule to be seen. I owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Farrell, Tina and his other staff members for taking such great care of my cherished 24-pound rescue mutt, Keebler, after he tumbled five feet down off a retaining wall during my back yard construction project last December that severely exasperated his mild case of luxating patella and was causing him considerable pain. I had rushed him to Veterinary Specialty Hospital after it happened, and they quoted me over $5,000 - $5,000 and weren't able to get him into surgery for several weeks. Most vet practices were having clients drop their pets off curbside due to COVID, so I looked for other options and my neighbor recommended Blue Sky. Not only did Dr. Farrell get us in sooner and do an incredible job operating on Keebler, it brought me tremendous comfort being allowed to meet with Dr. Farrell and his staff in person each time I went there. Too, his fee was about half that of VSH and VCA. Yes, it was difficult spending that first night at home with Keebler, as he was confused, disoriented and unhappy about wearing the cone. But personally, I preferred getting to sleep next to him down on the floor rather than being worried about him having to spend the night in a steel cage with strangers. Six months later, Keebler is 99% healed up and back to feeling great. So great, in fact, he managed to take off full speed yesterday chasing the neighbor's pesky cat all the way down our block! I found out about this place through word of my mouth. I was pushing my pup with her injured leg in her stroller and was telling someone how it's impossible to get an appointment at a VCA and the soonest was 1 month! I was like there is something wrong with my poor pup and she needs help ASAP! And they said to come here! So I called them up and they got me in three days later for the consultation! Everyone is sooo nice and the doc has a great personality! The employees are so personable and you can tell they really love their jobs and the animals! My baby had her surgery a week later! They were so kind and sweet to her! She had a dislocated right hip! The doc said for her to run and move once surgery was done. Sent us home with her medication and clear instructions. After 2 months we went back and he was firm with me and said less play more walking because she was doing the three legged cheat! Honestly the best advice! My baby girl is running and playing now like nothing ever happened! Only when she runs or plays too long or hard does she start limping and we take her home! I loved everyone we worked with! Our 11 1/2 year old mixed breed, Brody, was diagnosed with a torn ligament in April 2023. Our primary Veterinarian made the diagnosis and recommended fixing the ligament with a suture. Our regular Veterinarian is a great guy and a really good veterinarian, but I felt like I had to do some research. What I learned is that the suture technique is not very viable for a dog over 30 pounds. I searched for veterinary services near my home and met with several. I didn't feel comfortable at all. I decided to expand my search and found Doctor Farrell. His location was over 55 miles from my home. I started by speaking with his staff over the phone. Tina and Tori. They took care of all the transfer of medical records and x-rays. Tina and Tori are the easiest people to communicate with and they are very helpful. Brody and I then went and had a consultation with Dr. Farrell. He spent almost an hour with us. He examined Brody and confirmed the diagnosis. He showed me models of the surgery and the equipment that was going to be used. He explained why TPLO surgery was the industry standard for Brody. I was 100% satisfied that I had found the right veterinarian services to handle Brodie's ligament injury. Dr. Farrell was confident and really knew his subject matter. His past experience, expertise and bed side manner was exceptional. It made me really relaxed about the process. On the day of the surgery we arrived, and the staff was very professional. The surgery, suite and location were spotless. The staff made us feel at home. The surgery went very quickly, and Brody was out by the afternoon. He was even walking on his injured leg. When we picked up Brody, the veterinarian technician, Christopher Rodriguez, sat down and explained how the operation went and showed us x-rays. Chris gave a detailed outline of what we needed to do over the next two weeks. Chris had a lot of good advice and helpful tips. He obviously has a lot of experience and forecasted milestones to look out for and made very helpful suggestions to make the next two weeks go by more smoothly. Chris left us with a very detailed instruction list and everything was easy to follow. All of his medications were packed into a bag and clearly marked. One of the greatest features of Dr. Farrell's office is the ability to text them with questions after hours. I texted several times just to make sure I was doing everything right and the staff always returned my texts and gave me re assurance. It really made me feel like I wasn't on my own. We returned at the two week mark and Brody's staples and cone were removed. Everything went very efficiently. We were given another set of physical therapy tasks that were easy to follow. The next eight weeks are much easier and we began walking Brody more each week. Everything went just like Dr. Farrell and his staff said it would. Today we just finished Brody's last appointment. Ten weeks after the surgery. He is back to his old self and I could not be happier. The initial diagnosis really took me for a loop. I was nervous and not sure what to do. I interviewed four veterinarians for this procedure and never felt right. Even with our veterinarian of 20 years. The day I met Dr. Farrell, I immediately knew we were in good hands. I encourage anyone reading this to do their due diligence and interview all the veterinarian offices you can. Then go see Dr. Farrell and his staff. The difference will be night and day. My Saint Bernanard Chester needed shoulder surgery and I went with Blue Sky/Animal Outpatient Surgery because of a reccomendation from a friend. It was by far the best decision I could've made. They were able to see him within a few days and scheduled surgery for about a week later. Other places were saying it would take months before he could even be seen. The surgery went flawlessly and Chester is on a quick road to recovery thanks to their great work and post surgery guidance. They were professional, cost effective, and very responsive. They even answered questions through text after business hours. The whole staff is amazing, especially the surgical tech Chris. I could tell how passionate he was about helping Chester and he was always professional and very helpful. Blue Sky Vet Services is a vet that i was recommended when my dog blew our his knee. My first impression of this veterinarian was "awesome, great. easy to understand, appears to be up front and honest about the procedures, the cost and the aftercare. Little did i know it was all a façade. Now don't get me wrong, the staff are superb. They keep you updated through sms, but what really hurt their reputation for me is the way the doctor/veterinarian spoke to me when we had a disagreement about his "speell" he tells all his customers. He had the audacity to tell me that I wasn't listening to him and only received 30 percent of his hour speell. Excuse me but I'm not an idiot like he tried to make me feel, belittling me at every chance he could. He tried to make me think and feel like I was an uneducated dog owner, like a child in kindergarten that didn't quite know the English language. This doctor portrayed his arrogance to the highest degree and showed just how contradictive and unapologetic he was for anything. He acts like he is NEVER WRONG and makes NO MISTAKES. so its all on you!!!!! Go in at your own risk! This veterinarian's behavior to me was authoritative, egregious and cocky. Obviously, my business and thousands of dollars I spent on my fur baby is not important to him as it is to me because if it was his attitude would have been completely non existent. This doctor needs to be reminded that communication goes two ways, and is a team sport not a lecture!!!! Again, the staff under him were great, superb, wonderful, but to me, he was not a good person and is not a person i would recommend anyone who cares about their pets and their finances, not to go to this place, because the doctor who runs that business, to me, is not honest and anyone who is not honest does not deserve our business. I just recently moved from New Jersey to San Diego. I have four pets and two of them got sick shortly after the relocation.
