My dog is nearing the end of her life and Dr Ulman and staff have been very compassionate in dealing with me and the options facing me. And another thing is my dog actually likes this place and doesn't knock herself out trying to escape. Pricing is about the same as most vets. Not crazy expensive and not cheap either. Our boys, Frankie and Woody had to come in and see the doctor last week. They both ended up having some teeth removed and Frankie had an ear infection and had a large ugly growth removed. We've been coming here since Sandy opened her first location. We even went to her house when she remodeled that clinic! It's so nice to give your business to people that not only care, but they know you. Who does that anymore? We just don't see that "small town America" vibe especially here in California today. We have a 6 year old cat and a new puppy. They have been excellent and honest with both.. and as a pet owner it's hard to trust what is necessary vs not. Prices for appts, shots, and medicine have all been very fair and have not once felt pressured or taken advantage of. They are Frank with the options.. so you can make the best decision for yourself. My wife brought our 2yr old Aussie to this Hospital last week for what we suspected was a touch of food poisoning. The staff was very kind, however the final bill for a 45 minute visit was a startling $860! I can understand an office visit and a few test for $400 but an additional $460 for 2 x-rays??? Are you kidding me?? I just had 2 separate CT scans this week at Imaging Healthcare Specialists for less than $200 each. How can they possibily justify 2 simple pet x-rays costing more than 2 Human CT scans. The CT equipment and talent to opporate alone has got to be segnificantly higher. I must say, I never felt taken advantage of when Dr. Crow owned this pratice. read more

I've been a client of this practice for well over 20 years, and I really loved Dr. Crow and Dr. Hibser so when Dr. Ullman took over the practice I stayed. My first negative experience happened when I had to put down my 24-year-old cat. Dr. Ullman made a house call which I was very happy about until she showed up. Her demeanor was cheerful, chatty, and she was joking and having a great time although I was visibly very upset. When I got a small dog, I decided to give her another chance because anyone can make a mistake or behave inappropriately on occasion and maybe she didn't realize how hurtful it was. It's been a tentative relationship, but I tried to see the glass as half full. The doctors are competent and the dog seemed to like them ok and that really is the most important thing. Unfortunately, I had another negative experience recently when I took my dog in for a dental and the removal of a very small sebaceous cyst. The incision was much larger than I expected and I would have opted not to have the procedure had I known what they intended to do. Especially a week before Christmas - I have had to cancel my holiday plans as the dog is in no shape to travel. When I tried to have a conversation with Dr. Ullman about the lack of communication before or after the procedure, and the lack of an estimate or a bill before being asked to pay over $1000, she screamed at me for 15 minutes and hung up the phone. Seriously. I couldn't even address the issue. I have heard other stories but I won't repeat them because I only feel comfortable stating what happened to me personally. The vet care is adequate for the most part but the communication is lacking and there is no compassion, humanity, or civility in dealing with Dr. Ullman. read more

I needed a new veterinarian closer to my house. I came here today and the staff was very friendly. I could tell the Doctor wad very knowledgeable and got my medicine for my 10 year old Yorkie who has dry eye and a mild infection in her eye. Also got a call about getting her medicine for her ear infection. So far I was happy with the service. Looks like I'll need to go back to get the medicine for the ear infection and think she said she would take care of it. Always nice to find a good honest veterinarian/business. read more

We just moved to the area and were looking for a new vet. This one had great reviews so we went for it. My small terrier needed an update to a couple of vaccines and a heart worm test (to get more heart worm meds), and I threw in a routine nail trim too. Due to COVID, I couldn't go in with him to be seen, so they took him back and 15 minutes later the vet came out with blood on his hands and let me know that when trimming his nails, they split the thumb nail to the top and had to remove the entire nail (my dog is 5 years old and very healthy). I thought, ok the vet looks calm, it's probably no big deal. They brought him back out to me with a bandage from his toes up past his elbow with no meds or further instruction for care. I went home thinking it was no big deal. Then my puppy started having a lot of pain. He would jump up from his sleep, whimpering or yelp when he walked, showing us his paw. I called the office and told them my concern and another vet almost laughed away my concerns, telling me my dog was probably being dramatic but that I could come back if it would make me feel better. I wanted pain meds for my dog, so I went back. The same vet who laughed on the phone took him back to examine him when I got there, and when she came back out, she noted the amount of blood and use of styptic powder, gave me the pain meds and also added an antibiotic. I had also complained that the bandage was way to big, so that was significantly reduced, making my pup more comfortable. I left with pain meds and antibiotics, but only because I pushed originally for the pain meds. Also, they didn't have the heart worm meds that they recommended to me, so they pointed me online to purchase, where they said they would get notified once the order was placed and approve quickly. I got multiple notifications from the website that the vet was not responding and I had to follow up twice before they approved the order to ship. I hate giving negative reviews, but this was a frustrating experience and I'm not sure I can take my dog back. read more

Dr Ullman is great. She never oversells unnecessary services or shots like other vets. She spends time talking to you and working through any issues you have with your fur babies. My old guy has lots of issues, including anxiety (developed later in life) and we worked collaboratively on finding meds that work for him. I've been going to Encinitas Animal Hospital for the last 6 years, since it was Dr. Dean Crowe's office. I thought the transition to Dr. Sandy Ullman would be tricky...since I really loved Dr. Dean...though it's been perfect and she is very personable and warm! I was in this week while Dr. Sandy was gone and had to see Dr. Ira Abraham's...again another vet change...argh! Though again pleasantly surprised...he was really wonderful and so attentive to my questions and really took time figuring out what was up with my little dog. I know we all complain about vet costs...but lets face it... veterinarians have to go through the same medical training human doctors do...would you want any less for your pet? I find this office is very good at offering you all the options and are very understanding. Along with all that, its a small office, all the staff knows what's going on and takes time to chat with you and give love to your pets. The first time we visited this vet, we had a great experience. The staff was very friendly and they fit us right in and we were out the door within 20 mins of arriving. The doctor was very nice. When I called today to see if they could fit my pup in, the young girl at the front desk was rude and seemed like she didn't even want to deal with my call. It seemed like it was such an inconvenience to her that I was calling to see if they could care for my pup. Isn't that your job? I have worked as both a receptionist and a vet tech for a much bigger and much more high-volume vet before and even if there was a time that we couldn't fit someone in, we were never rude and always thoroughly explained why. (Emergencies, etc). I totally understand that they were booked for appointments and it was short notice; I never demanded a walk in, I just asked if they take walk ins to see if it was possible. She got all flustered and said to hold while she asked if they could fit me in. She asked how far away I lived and when I said 30 mins, she basically said if I couldn't be there in exactly 30 mins, they wouldn't be able to fit us in because they were too booked. Which, again is fine, but why so snappy? Now what kind of customer service is that? Especially when your job is to be available to answer calls regarding the healthcare of people's pets. If you don't like your job or you can't handle the heat...get a different job!!!! I am only leaving this review because I believe they have a decent practice going on there but this girl is going to drive their business away. read more

When we moved back to Encinitas, first order of business was finding a vet for our pup. On a whim, I checked in on the vet for my childhood dog and was so happy to see he was still practicing. Dr. Crowe did a great job then, and he does a great job now. We've had Dr. Crowe check out cysts on our dog, do an annual checkup and have consulted him on advice. He is so friendly, compassionate, and knowledgeable. He also has the capability to draw fluids, prepare slides, and give you some answers on the spot without sending out to a lab. We've always found his pricing to be fair. We had a wait to even get in with him because the practice has a full slate of patients, which speaks volumes about his work. read more

Absolutely LOVE this little oasis for pets!! My cat 'Shadow' approves it too! I am new to Encinitas. My cat 'Shadow' had a bad fall from jumping to a high dresser and landed on his wrist. After a few days seeing him hopping without sign of improvement, I decided to take him to see a vet. I did extensive research and found this place with great reviews and close to where I live (By the way, there are two different entries for this place so the reviews are split between the two - Dean Crowe and this one since Dr. Ullman took over the practice from Dr. Crowe). I took Shadow in and I am glad I did. Dr. Ullman and her crew were absolutely top notch. They greeted us with smiles and positive energy. It was very apparent that they love animals. They treated Shadow with care and did everything they could to make him (and me) feel comfortable. Dr. Ullman took a look at Shadow and came up with a treatment plan right away. She didn't try to push unnecessary treatment and was very conscious on helping to keep cost to be reasonable. After X-Ray test and confirmed of a broken wrist (poor thing), Shadow was bandaged up with splinter/cast and ready to go. I was surprised how well he behaved. The positive energy there sure helped. While I was waiting, I talked to others pet owners and all had great experiences there and were repeat customers. This place is tucked within the Encinitas Village shopping area so you can run quick errands or grab a quick coffee or meal at the nearby stores while waiting.
