I booked Britta when I reached a point of desperation after adopting a young cat and attempting to integrate her into my home with a resident cat, Frida. I didn't know what to expect when I booked Britta, but I trusted that her knowledge and experience would be the magic touch that would solve the issues I was experiencing. Britta came to my home, made observations, educated me, and tasked me with changes I needed to make to ensure my cats were mentally stimulated and happy. I had been basing my knowledge of cats on my experience with Frida, not realizing that my new cat's needs were so much different. Even the first simple change of adding a tall cat tree improved my life in that I could sleep through the whole night simply because my new cat, Carmen, was now entertained on her new tree. We adopted our precious pup Poppy from Alma Rescue and having never had a puppy of my own (our last rescue was over 1 year old) I was completely lost and stressed on how to handle her. I took to Yelp and starting going through all of the trainers I could find and sent out messages, interviewed, and even met with a few of them. Honestly none of them felt "right" or left me feeling comfortable with their methods - that and the prices left me discouraged. I came across Britta on Yelp and then I realized that the rescue had put one of her cards in my adoption packet - oh boy do I wish I had just started with her in the first place! She is amazing - Poppy is a Mexico rescue and has trust issues along with a fear of strangers (even though every one we meet means well she won't let anyone pet her). Due to this It took awhile for Poppy to let Britta actually work with her one-on-one, but we were still able to accomplish SO much through her expert explanations and working with her through me. She is so sweet and patient - I don't know she does it! She's done nothing but give us useful explanations and information and amazing suggestions as she thinks of things that can help us out. Utilizing clicker training (so fun!), settle on a mat/magic carpet, and amazing treat mixes to motivate Poppy we've been able to teach her so much! Although Poppy is still a work in progress (and a puppy - read: annoying puppy energy!) we have so many great tools to distract and entertain her away from the behaviors that are unwanted. She really takes the time to get to know her clients (both the furry and human type) to figure out the best methods and scenarios to help you achieve your goals. We completed the initial 6 sessions and then signed up for more knowing that there was still so much we wanted to work on together. Our experience with Britta was wonderful. We were feeling a bit defeated with our 9 month old rescue. After just a couple of sessions, we were hopeful that all would be okay. She is all about the positive, no punishment, no shame or pain. In our 9 sessions, a few in our home, several out and about, we leaned how to distract our big puppy away from unwanted behavior to positive behavior. We learned how to read his body language. We learned how to help him. Best tip was teaching him the word, "Cookie"! Now, even when really engaged in unwanted behavior, like barking at the neighbors when they slam their doors, we will just say, "Stephen, cookie!" and he disengages and comes with us for a snack. We had the pleasure of working with Britta recently for one of our new rescues. We've had many rescues in the past but smaller dogs and easier to manage. Our newest rescue is a pretty big girl and we saw some behaviors that we didn't wanted to encourage and needed some help. It is the Wild West when it comes to finding trainers and many different philosophies can be used. One key component for us is that we wanted a trainer that practiced only positive reinforcement. Our new dog is sensitive and sweet and I didn't want to do anything to affect that by correction or forcefulness. Do your research on what you want. We found Britta and I'm so happy that we did. She truly loves animals and her techniques and teaching are what allows the dog to learn in a way with no punishment or correction. The dog learns that the behaviors you want results in good things happening. I was unsure about the clicker training but I have to say I'm a huge fan. Britta gave us training so that we learned the timing correctly and when to cue and what to look for so that we can be effective. She also provided solutions to help our dog focus on us more versus a reaction. I want to be clear that training a dog is not a fast fix. We've been working with Britta for several months now to help train our border collie. Border collies are working dogs, so trying to have one as a normal, house pet can be difficult. Our dog is very high energy and can play all day long if you let him. He's also intelligent which adds another level to the difficulty. I've had dogs as a child but am mostly used to taking care of cats which definitely fit my lifestyle more. While we did some light reading on how to train our puppy before we got him, nothing prepared us for how it actually would be. I specifically remember running laps in my backyard at 10pm at night just to try and tire him out (note: this didn't work, he has endless energy) and my days were filled with hours of research on how to train different behaviors (not tricks). I slowly started getting a better idea of what I needed to do but I still felt like I was stumbling around in a dark cave trying to find my way out. Once Britta started working with us, it felt like I had someone who knew the way, grab my hand and started to lead me out. Yes, there were and are still difficult times but they were much more bearable with someone like Britta next to us on our journey. Probably one of the best pieces of advice she gave us was to give beans a strict schedule. I used to take him out every 2 hours for bathroom and 30min-1 hour of play time with training sessions sprinkled in between. According to Britta, this activity was way too much for him and was actually making him overtired (hence his inability to settle down). She laid out a schedule for us to try that had 2 hours of "sniff walks"(literally letting dog just sniff in the park or wherever) and a dedicated outside hour of play/training/rest. This helped a ton and he's been a lot better. Britta made sure to let us know that she wasn't there to train our dog but to show us how to be the trainer. She provided resources and demonstrations to teach us how to get the behaviors we were looking for. After working with Britta, I'm a lot more confident in my ability to assess situations and try to get a desired outcome with my dog. I can't write a more glowing review for Britta and her training services. I recently got a puppy who was so skittish he couldn't make it 5 steps out of the house. Britta's training is more than just a focus on obedience. She builds a true, sturdy foundation for animals and their temper. Our first training session was focused entirely on getting him to learn how to relax on his own. Then, she focused on his comfort with new sounds, the outdoors, and other people/dogs. By the 3rd session he was walking around confidently and could walk past any person/dog without even barking. His socialization took a bit longer to get him to play with other dogs - but by the end, he now wrestles playfully with my friend's 80lb german shepherd. He knows recall, waiting at a boundary, down, how to go into his pen, etc. (though it will take a bit longer to perfect it outdoors with a lot of distractions). My favorite thing about her training is that she wasn't just training my dog, she was also training me. She taught me what I am supposed to do when she is not around, so that I could confidently train him on my own after our sessions were complete. She gave me the tools I need to be a successful dog owner. For dog owners that are not familiar with fear-free training, it is a method of training animals by leveraging how much dogs value rewards. It prevents the stunting of dogs' personalities that comes with inhumane punishment, and teaches them how to make correct choices on their own. It works the best, but also takes more patience than the quick but damaging alternative, "NO!" Her fear-free training should be the new golden standard for animals. We found Britta after we adopted our new puppy in the fall of 2018. I was looking for a trainer who is well-versed in the puppy socialization and training methods developed by Karen Pryor. Britta has that knowledge and much more. Britta is truly lovely and is an amazing dog trainer. We rescued Murphy, our Jack Russell Terrier (JRT), when he was one year old, from a home where he was left alone in a yard with a Chihuahua every day. He had not been properly socialized as a baby and his owners did not know how to train or socialize him. As a result he was very fearful of people and other dogs, which came out in aggressive behavior. After meeting him, Britta explained that due to his history Murphy would be stressed by too much stimulation and we needed to take it slowly and not push him too much, too fast. She had us list his triggers and explained how triggers worked with dogs and with Murphy specifically. Then she had us start on clicker training with positive reinforcement to begin to recondition him. One of Murphy's problems was that he didn't growl if he was nervous but went right into snapping and even biting. Britta explained that he had probably been punished for growling and had us work to teach him to growl again. The first few times we said "Good growl" he seemed shocked that we were rewarding him for it, but then he began to use his growl when he was uncomfortable or nervous and the snapping and biting stopped. Britta didn't just train Murphy (and us), she gave us tools to understand his language and communicate with him. The first time I tried using calming signals with him he seemed surprised at first, but ended up on the floor with me licking my face and wagging his tail like crazy. It was probably the first time in his life he really communicated with a person, and it was a turning point for him. Before Britta, Murphy tolerated (but didn't really) like petting or too much physical contact. Now he can't get enough. He initiates being petted and having his tummy rubbed and snuggles up with us when he is tired. He doesn't freak out when he sees another dog on a walk, and he is confident enough to walk away from us if he needs his space at home. Last week someone stopped my husband and said Murphy was the most mellow JRT she has ever seen!! She said her 4 year JRT still couldn't be near other people or dogs without going crazy. Murphy still has a ways to go to be the fully comfortable-in-his-own-skin dog we know he can be, but as we come up on the one-year anniversary of having him it is amazing how far he has come thanks to Britta! read more

I had the pleasure of working with Britta after adopting our 1-year-old dog from Alma Rescue. I wanted to ensure he gained polite manners and worked on learning basic commands, such as sit, down, walking on a leash, how to settle on a mat, and attention among other commands.
