This is by far the WORST Petco I have ever gone to and I will never return. My mini schnauzer is almost a year and a half now and he's been groomed at a couple of different Petcos (Marin, Sacramento, Alameda). For the most part, I have generally been satisfied with his haircuts and the appointments usually took 2 hours--great. I took him in last month at 11:30am and he was not ready to be picked up until 5:45pm. 6 hours?! Not only was upset about the time (my whole day's plan went out the window), but when I picked him up he immediately used the bathroom right there on the floor. My dog had been locked in a kennel for the bulk of 6 hours and never taken out to use the bathroom! Additionally, the trim on his eyebrows were uneven. Upon talking to the person in charge of grooming about this experience, her feedback was that Saturdays are busy and they "rotate" the dogs between two grooming tables. Doesn't this defeat the whole purpose of an appointment? I call a month in advance to *RESERVE* a timeslot where my dog can be groomed--why are you people scheduling more people during the same window when you don't have enough space. And not once was I called for a courtesy notice that it was taking longer than expected. I strongly advise against taking your dog to Petco. His fee has always been around $60-$70 and my dog's been met with horrible treatment, knicks and cutes, uneven trims. This is ridiculous. I have made an appointment at a more local, kennel-free groomer in Oakland and my quote was around the same price. I would gladly spend more money for consistancy and decent treatment. read more

The lady I talked to on the phone was very rude. She didn't answer any of my questions. I was asking about pricing of an animal; she was working at the register and gave me some excuse about how she couldn't get me the price or even an estimate of what the animal might cost. she didn't tell me when they were going to get a beer shipment, nothing. terrible customer service at this establishment. Will not be going here again. read more

I brought my 12 year old cocker spaniel for a grooming about 9 months ago. I had used the Petco grooming at this store a few times before, and everything seemed OK. Their prices were reasonable and the staff was friendly. Unfortunately, I had the grooming experience from hell here. My poor dog had a terrible razor burn on his neck that became infected. My vet said it likely came from either the clippers being dull or the facility not properly disinfecting the blades. In any case, I had a very unhappy dog for almost two weeks while he whined, scratched, and was very uncomfortable. It was a nightmare. The local Petco staff were very unhelpful. I would have been OK with, "accidents happen, I'm sorry. Let's see if we can make this right". All I got from them was resistance. "He was fine when he left" or "There's nothing we can do". After I got in touch with the corporate office, things got a bit better. They were apologetic, stated there was management turnover at the Alameda store, and reimbursed my vet expenses. I dislike writing bad reviews, but I want to make sure other pet owners know what I had to deal with before going to this store. read more

Only 3 stars as the fish section of the shop is undergoing some kind of remodeling and therefore the choice is limited. All those star are for one person only and that is Jose who clearly cares , knows his stuff and has lovely manners. read more

I only shop here when I can actually use my Petco card to get a discount on Greenies. The staff is helpful and very friendly but I can't say the same for the groomers in the back. I did not like they way the way the elderly woman handled and yelled at my sweet 14 year old Pomeranian. First she pulled her fur hella hard and then yelled at her for growling.(Keep in mind my pomm doesn't even growl when my nieces and nephews pull her tail.) And then she told that she don't groom dogs with health issues!! This is after I make an appointment a week in advance, answer all their retarded questions, wait in line for 20 minutes. It's obvious that she doesn't really care about animals and probably should retire if she is that bitter. If that's how she handled my dog in front of me I don't want to think how she would be treated if I wasn't there. Their grooming prices are competitive but if you care about your dog take him or her to Broadway Pet Hospital and ask for Melissa! read more

Keep having trouble with the repeat delivery. I keep getting extra deliveries when i have delayed them so finally went in to return my last order. i told the clerk that i was having trouble but online is the only place i can get the fish food. The clerk, an older White lady, blonde, no makeup, then said that she can show me where it is in the store. I told her that you don't carry it. Said i looked and you don't have it, and she said "well apparently you don't know where to look." I took a breath and said just return my order and handed her the unopened box and said I delayed the order but keep getting it. She then told me to logon to my account and when I asked why she said "so i can see what you're doing wrong." Again, just return my order and she responded she couldn't do it at that register and i had to go to another one. Thank goodness it was Phineas, the only professional person in the store. He made the return, confirmed they don't carry it in the store. I had to get something else so went to shop. Yep, I got "her" again. Then she said, remembering me, that I probably have two accounts and don't know it! said I would know it because i have to login and I would see it. Then said "i need to logon in so she can look at it herself!" Then made other condescending remarks. When I asked her if she knew how insulting she was, she just shrugged her shoulders. Well after being insulted, way too many times, there was more but this is long enough, I came home and called. All you could do was Chat and I got a Marly R. She told me the complaint had to be online and it would be forwarded so I started typing. Then 2 minutes later, she asked if I wanted to continue the conversation, Told her I was entering it. Four times she asked if i wanted to continue and kept sending me the same info to submit. Asked her to let me finish and she asked if there was anything else she could help me with and disconnected. Long complaint, all true, and canceled my account. With stores needing their long time customers to return and stay, apparently they don't care about the people they hire. Maybe its because you can't file or call anyone to complain? read more

The way they speak does not make me believe they are experts on what they sell. Terrible service. Not knowledgeable. A waste of time. I needed live feeder mice, they told me on the phone that they carry them. I drove over and all they have are pet mice. Pet mice are not suitable for feeding since they receive vaccinations and antibiotic treatments. The staff didn't know the difference and kept saying things that don't add up like: "they don't receive antibiotics other than vitamins" read more

1. This store sold me cat treats that were 3 months past their expiration date. Easily exchanged, but still rather alarming.. 2. I went in yesterday evening to get my cat's flea medicine (advantage II large cat), as they were out a week ago. However, they were still out yesterday. I asked the cashier when they would restock, and he said "uhh, maybe next tuesday [ 7 days]...actually I have no idea..." ....Really? Seriously unreliable. Seems like they don't care about animals' well being. You get what you pay for. I'd rather pay a few bucks more at Pet Food Express. read more

There's a reason this location has a lower-than-good overall rating. - It always smells funky in here. Uber funky. - Service is borderline rude. Can definitely be unprofessional. - Interior feels cramped, dirty, & musty. - Grooming dept. seemed understaffed & job was OK at best. I'd prefer not to go in here ever again if I can help it. Hahaha. But seriously. read more

Jeez, what's all this hate from other reviewers on Petco? I read the negative reviews, some were for the grooming and I can't speak to that. But as far as complaints on a "knowledgeable staff" -- that's just silly. It's a petco, they have basic pet supplies. They have good prices. They hire regular people, and the people I've met there are extremely nice! I've had many employees remember me even though I don't come in too often. They have a nice selection of stuff, way more food than necessary. Dogs are welcome there. I really like the store. read more

Picked up a few cat toys and some cat treats, at decent prices. A lot of empty shelfs and not the biggest selection.

This place makes me sad. It never looks like it's properly cared for and the employees seem like characters out of Napoleon Dynamite. Unfortunately we end up here several times a month because they're the closest place that sells the recycled-newspaper cat litter. It's not going to take much for me to abandon this place and find another store. read more

You might as well spend your money at Pet CLub in Emeryville their prices are ridiculously lower when compared to PETCO. Hey Petco, Sorry Trip stuck his hand in the turtle tank, and tried to liberate the chinchilla, and played hopscotch on the paper advertisements he scattered all over the floor, and said the bird room, "Smell like dead!" and that I couldn't stop laughing long enough to stop him during any of these pursuits. Ugh, I wish I had read reviews of the grooming here before I got it done. I paid $60 for a bath, nail trim, hygenic trim, and teeth cleaning. I'm not sure if the teeth cleaning was done, theres still tons of fur on my dog's junk, and fluff on the underside of his paws. I mean, at least they bathed him and trimmed his nails? I've had wayyyyy better service for $35 elsewhere. I plan to go back to complain. read more

Been going to Petco ever since I got my little "Morkie" -- Maltese mixed with yorkie --- and it's been alright. Petco is pretty organized and their selection isn't too bad. Came here multiple times now and service has been alright. A lot of their employees aren't really genuinely friendly, which is sad. The prices here are ridiculous. I would say save yourself the trouble and go to Walmart even if you have a petco club card thing. The thing I like about this place is that on the weekends, Luv my Pet (a cheaper pet vaccination service) comes in which saves me money. Go to their website and check it out if you are interested. luvmypet.com read more

Had to return an item I purchased online, the cashier was new and had to call someone for assistance. She radioed the manager, but he did not show up right away, instead some other person came and helped. She (i guess was the assistant or something) was not friendly, did not even acknowledge me....just came over and told the cashier what to do. Finally the manager came by, he too did not even acknowledge me, just mumbled something, started punching in numbers in the register, printed out my return receipt, gave it to me then walked away. I've been in there several times within the past couple of weeks and could never find anyone to help me. read more

I think this store does not know what the word "service" means. Everyone in the store from the manager to the clerk are very unhelpful. Looks like they hate their jobs and take it out on the customer. If you need pet food go to Pet Food Express; the prices are better and service is awesome. DON'T BOTHER SPENDING YOUR MONEY AND AGGRAVATION HERE. The rudest service I have had in any store. Even when I called to ask them for an item; the clerk said he was busy; I went to the store and they were just talking to each other. Busy huh! read more

Nice store. Clean and presentable. Staff has always been friendly. I go here to get cat food and they always have the best selection and the best prices. We adopted our kittens from this Petco and that was easier than going to the SPCA. The kittens are very playful and they love the toys we get them. I have never had a bad experience at this store. read more

Our 90-pound American Bully was putting a lot stress on my family due to his behavior problems. His nipping and jumping were becoming unbearable and aversive techniques taught by most YouTube channels only made his behavior worse. Thanks to Stephanie's easy to understand reward-based techniques and strategies, we were able to drastically improve his behavior within the first session! Stephanie also taught me the 'why' behind my dog's jumping and nipping which really opened my eyes to my own actions and how I was unknowingly encouraging the bad behavior. Working with Stephanie has been enjoyable and she always has a clear, logical, and easy-to-follow solution when I bring up a new behavior problem. While my dog is still a work-in-progress, I am now able to communicate with him and can turn to the multiple reward based strategies that Stephanie taught me whenever an issue arises. Reward-based training did take a little bit of practice but the trust and bond that it built between me and my dog made it worth every cent! read more

Okay, so I had to write this review. Petco has had a pretty bad rap in the past about the care of their critters. Luckily, I've never experienced it first hand, but I have to say that the Alameda Petco appears to have their act together, especially in the bird department. I'm a self-proclaimed bird freak and can't help myself - every time I go to restock the seed I have to stop in to visit the "captives". Every bird they have there is so sweet and so totally approachable I want to take them all home. This is all due to the staff who work with these animals. They really "get" the feathered-people and treat them with kindness and respect. We recently purchased our newest baby from them - a loving green-cheek conure who is the biggest snuggle-bug. So sweet! For almost a month he was too young to purchase - still being hand-fed. Since we were first on the list, we visited him regularly. The staff was always accommodating, taking him out of the cage and letting us hold him and get to know him better. When we finally got to take him home, almost everyone in the store had to come over and say good-bye. One more thing - within the first fifteen days after purchase, we can take the bird to a local vet to get him checked out and Petco will foot the bill. I was duly impressed. And if you're considering a new addition to the family, Petco has five new baby conures - three suns and two jendays, that are truly precious. If we hadn't already committed to our greenie I'd be taking one those guys home with me. read more

I am not kidding here - but everytime I go into this store to buy my kitty supplies....1 of the staff members is talking about not wanting to work or there break or bitching about another employee. It is very discouraging as a customer. read more

Not a big fan of "Petco" in general, but Petco in Alameda is amazing. The people who work here are super friendly, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and helpful. Whether it's the people in the aisles or the cashiers, it's always a pleasure to come here. I initially came here to buy a leopard gecko for my classroom, and I was a bit skeptical about the health of their geckos. However, from the beginning to the end, I kept running into people who knew about geckos, loved them, and made sure that I would be a good owner. It was interesting how each person I ran into (the person who helped me pick out my gecko and the cashier) all asked me similar screening questions naturally. My gecko is doing great, and now I come here to get my crickets. I only wish the manager wasn't so tight-fisted about giving discounts to schoolteachers. (Everyone else is nice though!). I enjoy coming here. Now, can you say that about YOUR pet store? read more

I'm new to the area and used to just go to Petsmart but they don't have one close by... So now Petco seems to be my go to. If you know what you want then you'll never have an issue! :) If you need help, expect to wait as they always seem to be short staffed or if staff is helping someone else it seems they take way too long with each person and need to learn to break away so they can help others. Tonight I waited close to 30 minutes for a manger because the cashier didn't know how to apply a discount since the computer didn't do it automatically. I tried to go on the floor to ask another staff member for help because the line was piling up behind me (one cashier) and I was trying to help the cashier out as well as myself since the manager was on break and no one seemed to be helping/responding to her radio requests. While I was looking for another employee I came across Steve and said excuse me and he tells me to wait then walks past me and huffs and puffs!! Completely rude! When the manager finally comes back from her break she says the discount doesn't apply!!!! I could not believe I sat there and waited when someone could have simply looked at what I was buying and the sign they had posted to realize that's why the discount wasn't applied! I took a photo of the advertisement because they had it all over the cat food cans to find out it only applied to the "wilderness" kind of Blue cat food. What I don't understand is why the 20% off wasn't only under the wilderness blue brand rather than being all over the blue brand when it only applied to one type. It just could've saved so much time if someone could've looked into rather than waiting for the manager, just to be told no. The manager was nice but I was beyond frustrated by the time she got to me. The rating is for the staff, lack of knowledge they have and being short handed. read more

If it were up to me I would own a small zoo...but because I cannot afford to upkeep a trazillion different types of birds, reptiles, dogs, cats & furry other little creatures...and I have Josh who tells me NO! every time I try to give a flash of my eyelashes for a new addition to our small family...I don't! Bitocth... Anyhow, Petco, is local...or should I say Loco...well at least some of there employees seem to have smoked a little too much pot before heading off to their cool job taking care of all these fun little creatures. For the most part this store serves my needs...Tetra Mins for "Earl AKA Flat Top" and Discounted Litter Refills for my lovely little Hanna who my mother has so kindly named "Hannabitch" which she is by the way. However, every time I come into this store I wonder why I put myself through it...I try not to go on Saturdays...this is Kitty adoption day, and regardless of my mood I will leave crying because I am heart broken over all the little kitties left behind...Now GO GET ONE! This store smells like P.I.S.S., lets not talk about the time I slipped on some P.I.S.S. and the employee who watched me practically fall on my ass just looked at me... On top of that you cannot get away from the Turtle Guy who talks your ear off and whenever you need to ask a "Specific" Question you end up listening to him for about 40 minutes. Like said...they smoke pot here... The one blond guy that works in the fish department is helpful, I wish they had bigger enclosures for the pets...the Bird room is cool, but I wish they would sell the parrots for less...I might be able to talk Josh into one then. Overall, outside of the craziness and the piss on the floor I go here when I have too...a little over priced if you ask me, but I will pay the extra dough if I don't have to fight the crazy madness of Wal-Mart after a long day of work! read more

I love the people at petco they are so funny and friendly! Sunny, the groomer, who makes fun of Lulu, my dog when i get her nails cut ( my dog screams during the entire process, so embarrassing!). BIG FAT UPDATE!!!!!! Im not going to take away a star here because i really feel like this isnt the primary part of petco... but the GROOMING area - the staff - i say stay away. Had an absolutely miserable experience with them yesterday that made me want to run for the hills. Seriously. Thankfully the person i was talking to seemed to want to have an hour to herself - not take our pre-scheduled appointment - so i got away scott free with my poochie protected, but beware! SUCKY! id give that side NO stars. When our girl, Racey, dropped a deuce on the floor while "shopping" for treats, the staff was helpful and patient... I might even say ENTHUSIASTIC! They went out of their way to make sure that the only unpleasantries exchanged were silent ones - glares and the odd stink eye (no pun intended) from the other Petco patrons. I'll give them four stars... because in a perfect world, those who frequent such places as the Petco in Alameda would not look on with such disdain as our adorable little fudge-ems makes a doodle! I mean COME ON... Like your precious pooch hasnt ever had an accident!? Also the vendor reps peddling the brand du jour can be a bit TOOOOO salesy. The rep for "beggin strips" ought not be BEGGIN for my business... ahhhhhhahaahah. Love, Sara read more

I try to avoid this Petco as much as I can. Their prices are bad, they are way out in the middle of nowhere, their staff are a bit rough and unfriendly, and the place always smells like piss. Really, I only will step in here for the cheap cat toys. I have to be in the proximity to even give this a thought, but my cat loves the little fabric mice. It's too bad he tears them apart within 30 minutes or so. read more

We had been taking our dogs here for grooming for more than 3 years and recently had a horrible experience. Previously similar stuff had happened to my dogs but I never complained or made a big deal assuming it was a accident (water in ear so he caught an infection) which I took him to the vet for. This time they burned his genital area so bad I took him to the vet again , and cut him on his upper arm. The burn on his genitals where so bad I actually thought they used wax! They do not care about animals here as I can only imagine the pain my dog wemt trough and how he cried yet they kept going! Went into the store to talk to Manager but he only offered to refund the meds i got in the vet not the grooming service wow and I still have not received anything. The money is not my concern but as to how they brush it off like its nothing really disappointed will never come back read more

The Alameda Petco is a decent petstore with knowledgeable staff that are generally responsible. I've been here a fair number of times for hamsters, fish, and other small pets. In addition, they support several adoption agencies and often have adoption weekends for cats in particular. There is plenty of parking as it's part of the Shoreline strip mall which is actually huge. When I've asked questions about small animals, they've usually been responsive and friendly. I've seen some really horrible petstores and some really good ones. It's nice that Alameda has a good store. read more

I retract my previous review. Catherine is amazing to work with and she totally remembers me when I come in, and she does a great job. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have taken my chihuahua to this location for over 3 years, every month for a nail trim and the staff always treats me like a complete stranger. I wish they would remember me and my chihuahua? Like I said been going there every month like clock work for over 3 years and the staff looks at me with zero recognition and they have been the same staff since 3 years ago. I cannot comment on their dog grooming services but they have a big selection of pet toys and accesories, tons of foods to choose from, and the most adorable dog clothing ever!!! I go on shopping sprees here for my girl. They will also attempt to be competitive with their pricing. They did not match cost of reptile heat pad from an online seller but they did discount so as to stay fair. Nice!!! My dog will not eat anything from the doggy bakery though -- she just did not like it :-( Might have gluten in them?? She had a mild allergic reaction (excess ear wax and runny stool). The staff on the floor are helpful, they seem to know what they are doing. When you get to check out though...it's like they put someone at the register and they have no idea what they are doing. Friendly employees always willing to answer questions and get advice from. Unfortunately, at times it's difficult trying to get help in aquatics. Either there are only 2 people on a shift so one is at the check out register and someone is already helping someone else in a different area or is stocking shelves. If they're stocking, they have no problem helping you right away. If they are helping someone else, well you just have to wait your turn. Today at the 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm hour, there were only 2 employees available and several people waiting to be helped in aquatics and for live crickets. It took nearly 40 minutes before I was helped. Usually I don't have to wait that long so was a bit surprised today. So far all the fish that I've bought here have lived long lives in my aquariums and tanks. I have bettas, guppies, and corydoras currently. I've bought guppies from a big competitor and they usually die within a week in an established tank and after taking all precautions to acclimate it. 06/27/2016 Looked busy today when I walked in at about6:00 pm, but seemed to be well staffed and was able to get help immediately.
