First time I took my Shih Tzu there I felt like they did a decent job. She was a rescued and needed to be shaved down however this last time I asked for a puppy cut. When I got her she was shaved completely down, even further than the first time. She doesn't even look a Shih Tzu! The price changed too, first time was $90 and this time was $120! Look at my dog! When we lived in North Oakland, we went to at least 5 different cage-free groomers with our old dog and there was always some drawback to each place (bad haircuts, or too pricey, one place made our dog bleed and didn't tell me when I picked him up, another place said they couldn't groom our dog anymore because he was too old and bumpy...), and we always had to book appointments at least a month in advance. I was thrilled when we moved to East Oakland two years ago and found Pet Choice, which is only five minutes from our house and they can always get our dogs in with just a couple of days notice. Freddy (the owner) is the nicest, friendlest guy who is always happy to see us come in. We've gotten good haircuts from all of the groomers there, but Jenny is our favorite. She is very sweet, shows real affection for my pups, she gives great haircuts, and they really seem to trust her (which is saying something because they are kind of neverous about everybody). The prices are very reasonable too, so I don't mind giving her a big tip (which you should too!). read more

Amazing place! Shelter in place started right when my labradoodle was due for a haircut but I found Pet's Choice thanks to a friend. My pup has had some not so great haircuts so I'm always weary trying new places but Pet's Choice was great! They accept one dog at a time to stay in compliance with social distancing and everyone was friendly and they asked lots of questions to make sure they got the cut right. I took Max in and they asked me what I wanted and called me when he was ready. When I came back Max's tail was wagging and he looked handsome! This is definitely Max's new haircut place! read more

Booked a grooming appointment. Dogs are kept in a small cage while they wait for their appointment. Our appointment was at 1pm, but there was still one dog ahead of us. Our dog was super frightened and was crying. I felt so bad leaving him, and the man who schedules the appointments told me I could leave if I didn't like their set up. I did indeed leave the dog, but I wasn't comfortable. Groomer asked me what I wanted, and I said "PLEASE don't shave him. Just a nice little cut. I want him to look the same." She confirmed by saying "just a bit off the top." Great. Came to pick him up and he looks like Ringo Starr. Also, he was shaved. $70 for a job I could have done with my own electric razor (but I pay so that it doesn't look like I did it, ahem). Bumm read more

Update: owner responded to this comment. Told me the groomer said my dog was aggressive which is hilarious cuz I've never had this problem with the female groomer here. Nor has he ever been aggressive to anyone. Also suggested i have a vet do it so they can medicate them. Mind you he's already medicated and the fact that he was freaking out just shows how traumatic this interaction was. Do yourself a favor. Don't support this business. NOT MY PET'S CHOICE. Wish there was a ZERO star option. Our dog is previously feral and extremely fearful of people especially in unusual situations such as this. We have only ever taken him here to get his nails trimmed and only three times. We call day of and we stay in the shop until he is done. We don't want him staying in some cramped kennel for an hour waiting to be seen by a shoddy groomer. The first two times a woman cut his nails. We had warned her of his severe anxiety and she was okay with not muzzling him. She reassured us that her own dog is the same way so she took no offense to his reaction. She took her time with clippers. TODAY, we took him in. He was given to a male groomer and a Dremel file was used on his nails. Mind you he has never seen or heard a Dremel before and he was expected to sit still for that. My partner heard the struggle our terrified dog flailing in the hands of the groomer. He asked to go back there to be with him to help and the owner told him now "Because COVID" which, to be honest, is a load of BS. If you're a pet care specialist of any sort you should understand when exceptions are to be made for special needs animals. ZERO CONCERN WAS GIVEN FOR MY DOGS WELL BEING. If the groomer was not professional enough to trim a dogs nails who needed special care, I would have preferred then sent him home with the talons he came in with. Not to mention, my dog peed and pooped during this whole encounter because of how scared he was which he DOES NOT USUALLY DO. When he got home, he collapsed in our bathroom in a panic, panting out of fear. He shut down for 30 minutes afterward and I noticed his chin was red. He bursted blood vessels on his chin, I dunno if this was from being held down or banging onto something but whatever it was, I called to complain and the owner had the AUDACITY to tell me "tell me you want the woman next time" I reassured him there will not BE a next time. Better vet your groomers everyone. Cuz it could be some meat head Joe Shmoe who has a certificate that doesn't prove anything. Definitely would like my money back and no lazy gift certificate nonsense. read more

TL/DR: he DOUBLED the price without checking in at all. I had never been to this groomer before, and began by calling and asking for an estimate. The owner didn't want to give me an estimate because "people get upset if the price is $5 more". Eventually he gave me an estimate of $100 or "maybe a little more", which is more than other groomers I've used charge, but not outrageous. I arrived on time for my appointment, at which time I was told that he had tried to call me to confirm the day before (I didn't recognize the number, so I didn't pick up), but as I hadn't gotten back to him he had booked someone else in my spot. Then he said he would check with the groomer and see if they could fit me in. The groomer came out and looked at my dog and said she could do it, and I saved their number in my phone so that I wouldn't miss any more of their calls. When I came back to pick up my dog the owner charged me $195, saying my dog was matted and difficult to work with. My dog may have had a couple mats, but not many, as I checked him over before I brought him in and removed all the mats I found myself. Furthermore, as soon as they decided that it was going to cost DOUBLE the original estimate they should have called me and let me know, rather than dropping that enormous bill on me when I came back. This place surprised me! I found it as it was near another errand I was running and I needed some chewy things and treats for my puppy. The kind fella was in the back when I first walked in but at soon as I called out for help he came up to the front to assist me. The shelves aren't packed to the brim but it has everything you really need! I told the owner I wanted something to give my dog for training, something with high value that will help him be obedient. And he pointed out this nice big bag of roasted beef lungs and oh my , my dog LOOOOVES them. I've never seen him be so obedient as he is with these treats around. Further, he guided me on some good bully sticks that will last awhile for a dog that can chew through anything, and told me about the ingredients too. I like the basic, pure meat, less processed, kind of digestible stacks for my doggy. This place is A hidden gem!! Make sure to ask for advice, he knows what he's talking about! read more

Just returned from another trip to my local pet shop. The dogs make a beeline for it whenever we are walking around MacArthur. We always find a tasty snack, many natural and organic, whenever we stop in. The store has a good selection of natural dog foods. On the last trip I got Butcher's Prime roasted beef lung tips, all natural, no other ingredients (made in Nebraska). The quality of grooming at Pet Choice has gone down considerably since groomer Eva left. I have a cocker spaniel that I have been taking to Pet Choice since 2020 and when Eva groomed him he always looked perfect. Today I took my cocker to be groomed and explicitly told the groomer to leave his ears and eyelashes long but when I came to pick him up his ears and eyelashes were cut short and the fur on his face and muzzle that needed to be clipped down the most weren't plus the fur on his muzzle and face looked very choppy . This is the last time I will be taking my cocker to Pet Choice because I refuse to pay for services that are substandard and for a groomer that can't follow basic instructions. Now I have to ask my dog's former groomer who is no longer in business but a personal friend of mine to clean up the mess this unprofessional groomer made plus she knows how to do a basic cocker cut. An additional negative about this business is that you have to pay for the service BEFORE you ee how your pet is groomed I guess that way if you don't like the service you can't refuse to pay. Pet owners beware take your pet to a groomer that doesn't charge exorbitant prices for a 10 minute hack job. read more

SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS! Such a wonderful spot. Took my puppy to get groomed here (her first time!). We had called around to some other groomers in the area and they were booked out MONTHS in advance. Called this place and got her in within two days. Fantastic! Wanted to trim her fur down because summer/foxtail season and our vet suggested getting a cut. I have been taking my finicky grandpups for grooming there for about 2-3 years. Elida (with dazzling pink or red hair) is my absolute favorite. She listens to my requests and never disappoints. Owner kept saying "she is a nice person" and I won't disagree with that. She might be a nice person. She is terrible at this job. After 6 hours they didn't give me a call, I went there to find my dog with have a half way done a uneven buzz cut! My dog is extremely exhausted and scared. Do yourself a favor and don't make my mistake. Pay a little more but go somewhere they know not only a dog but even a human can't take 6 hours long haircut. Btw, when I asked to give me my dog back as is. She kept the door closed, didn't reply to me neither the owner! She didn't respond to my requests of letting go of my dog for a good 5-10 minutes. I went to this store a few time with my friend. When you are in the store, you will easily notice a few, about five, big dogs of different breeds. Surpisingly, these dogs were either wandering in the store, or did their own thing. However, on the other hand, Fred, the owner, loves to talk and he is very hilarious but very professional when comes dog related issues. He loves to talk about his dogs and he also give good advices. I will not use this service again for dog grooming (haircut). I wanted to support a local, small business in my neighborhood to cut the hair of my 15 month old cairn terrier for the 1st time. I wanted to even out her hair on her body post-surgery. The front office staff (scheduler and front desk worker) were friendly and welcoming, but the groomer (sam, who said she was the senior groomer) ruined the experience because she COMPLETELY DISREGARDED all of my explicit directions about what and how I wanted my puppy's hair cut to be. I stated multiple times what I was looking for (e.g., even out body, legs, feet; NO face except a little around her eyes; NO ears; cut below the neck); she correctly, albeit succinctly, repeated back multiple times what I stated (even out body, no face) as I checked for understanding. When I picked up my puppy post-haircut, I immediately saw more hair had been cut in areas I explicitly said not to cut, areas that i asked to be cut were not cut or minimally cut so that it was not evened out, and the overall look where she was cut was choppy. I immediately expressed my dismay and frustration directly to her; her response was "it looked disproportionate so I evened it out." My response: "that was the point." I am APPALLED and angry that this groomer believed she could defy, disregard, and ignore my explicit instructions and do what she wanted because it didn't look "right" to her. I am paying her money to give me the service I ask for. This is MY dog, not hers. Had I not been consumed with the negative result of the haircut, I would have refused to pay for the service. The scheduler was present for all of this. Neither he nor the groomer offered to reduce or eliminate the cost of this very disappointing haircut. read more

Freddie saved me of going to our family vacation. When I called him and ask him to Babysit my 4 months old husky/Shepherd (malinois) mixed not neutered he gave me an affordable price. I've been calling so many Sitter and because my dog was not neutered they always add $ on top of everything. The best thing about this place is that Freddie has 5 big dogs that are very nice and trained. Buddy had a playmates and so he didn't get bored. I love this place and if you are looking for a Sitter this is the best place. And for sure you won't feel guilty coz for sure you baby will have fun as well. read more

The first time I took my dog here, the groomer was 1 hour and 30 minutes late even after I notified the person I made the appointment with that my husband and I had things to do after the appointment. Our furry friend got a bath, nails done, teeth brushed, and anal gland expression done. It was all fine, save for the extremely late groomers. Freddy, who I believe is the owner, knocked off the price of the teeth brushing... I'm guessing it was done, because they were ridiculously late for our appointment. We figured, ok, well enough and let it slide that time since some people just don't have good days. Maybe they had a really good reason for being late. Fast forward to, today, and we decided last minute that we should try to get him an appointment. I called knowing it might be difficult and that we may not be able to get one. Freddy answered the phone. I asked about an appointment, today, and he said he was busy, but he could squeeze us in at 3pm, which I was grateful for. I needed to check if that worked for my husband, because he would be the one taking him. The time wasn't going to work so we decided to bathe him ourselves for, today. I called Freddy back with the intention of rescheduling a bath, teeth cleaning, and nail trimming for the coming Saturday. Instead, while I was explaining that 3pm wouldn't work, today, and before I could even try to reschedule he quickly brushed me off saying, "Ok, yeah I'm very busy".
