I've brought my small dogs to Mr. Johns once. They're on College Avenue near a bunch of the restaurants on the Oakland side. They did a good job on grooming my boys. It doesn't seem like they gave a good appointment schedule, the person on the phone suggested drop off around 8:30-10am. If you're going to do that morning drop off I suggest coming earlier because there are already people and dogs lined up well before 8:25am. They opened a few minutes late but were able to take a bunch of dogs right away. They take credit card. Dog grooming is getting pricier these days but until I learn how to do it myself, Mr. John's is one of the places in our rotation. read more

I took my 2 dogs in this week. When I called to make an appointment I was pleasantly surprised to be able to bring them in the next day. In the past there has always been 3-5 days before there was any availability. One of my dogs is terrified when I take her. Froy will whisk her in and get her settled. My 2nd dog loves everyone and was quite happy to follow Froy to the back. It's been several months since my older dog, a husky/wolf mix has been groomed, needless to say she was definitely in need of a good clean up. My other pup, a collie, just turned a year and he needed to be groomed by a professional. The collie was ready to go by 1:00pm. The other hadn't been washed yet. I was concerned about her, due to the horrible week she'd had from the 4th, which spilled over to fearfully trembling every night since. In hindsight I should have asked to do her first. Froy finally called me around 4:15 and I went and picked her up. She looked beautiful. She felt so much better as well. When it became time to pay, and the fact that the price for the husky always goes up from what I payed last time, and since it had been so long since my husky had been groomed, I expected the usual fee hike. The collie, who doesn't come close to the effort it took for the husky, to say I was surprised at what was charged for both dogs doesn't paint a clear picture. Especially when a price range was quoted for bringing 2 dogs. The amount I paid doesn't come close. I discussed this issue with Froy, only for it to fall on deaf ears. Yes, he did an amazing job on my husky, but not my collie. Rather than taking the time to comb through his hind quarters, where there was a small area of pieces of poop, which I have combed through in the past and was able to remove all of it, Froy chose to shave his entire back end. He cut, not trimmed his mane and shaved his front legs. This pup loves to talk, so perhaps Froy wanted him out of there. Bottom line is my collie looks as though he was done by somebody who was inexperienced. Definitely not worth the exorbitant fee he charged. Unfortunately there have been several issues in the past. I've stayed away a few times in the past. Then given another try. The location is convenient. At this point I prefer to find a different groomer. I've been going to Mr. Johns when Mr. John was the groomer. People whom I've recommended have had unfortunate issues as well. read more

If I could give this establishment zero stars I would. I took my goldendoodle there today after someone recommended him. When I arrived, I said, I want my Doodle done medium and I was told because she had some knots on legs, he would shave those but I said not to shave her body. Well I went to pick her up and he acted nervous and said he had to shave her all over. I was shocked when I saw her. Not only was she shaved all over but her cut was sloppy and uneven. He shaved areas way too close to her skin. She was very stressed and just wanted to leave. I asked him about several spots that were definitely uneven and I wanted him to fix these areas, but he kept talking over me and then left the room abruptly. I'm posting photos so you can see for yourself and make an informed decision if this is where you want to support this establishment. Furthermore, he has no love of animals and is obvious how he grabbed my dog when she acted fearful when we first entered. It's normal for most dogs to feel stressed when coming to a new place and you would assume the owner would take some time to calm the dog down. I should have left right then! I will inform all my doodle friends to avoid this place. I don't mind spending $175 to get my dog groomed, but this is unacceptable and very unprofessional! read more

He always asks me "how short" on drop off. We talk about what's needed, and my curly doodle sometimes needs a super short cut because of the foxtails that are everywhere this time of year. Mr. John's is one of the few places that will even accept large dogs (over 50 lbs) so we're lucky they're great! The owner is so nice, greeting us upon arrival. Scheduling has been easy with a quick phone call- we can typically get in for an appointment within a couple days. Steet parking out front has always been available. And the shop smells and seems clean from the lobby. We've brought our 18 month old, 80 lb Bernedoodle here about 4 times, starting with his first puppy cut at 6 months old. Each time, he ends up needing a shorter cut than I'd prefer but when the dood's got some sneaky matting, I'm glad they aren't willing to torture him for my own vanity. The big guy doesn't seem super nervous when we arrive so that's a good sign. Only downside is that he's usually there all day, and not ready at the predicted time which can throw off my schedule. Plus I feel bad having my dog there so long. Luckily he looks cute and silly with his new cut and feels good afterward. Post-cut, he's sometimes itchy or irritated in delicate spots but he's never had any cuts injuries so I feel comfortable that the groomers are taking care of him. read more

We chose to bring out overgrown OES here when our long time groomer closed without warning. We wanted the dog shaved. Difficult with mats but not exactly a grooming. She was butchered. Her ears, which are always cut long on an OES, were trimmed to the size of normal dog's ears. They took forever and charged me 20% more than the very high quote. We would never take our dog here again or recommend them to anyone. read more

I was looking for a dog groomer much like the one described by the other reviewers of Mr. John's Dog Grooming listed here. I made an appointment for my Wheaten Terrier, but when I arrived for my appointment, the location was no longer named, Mr. John's. It was not called Bubbles. Imagine my surprise when I went in and found it was the place I was looking for. The problem is that the previous owner who sold the business to Froy the current owner, came back years later and wanted to charge him an additional $18,000 if he wanted to continue to use the name, Mr. John's. What a ripoff. Once I got past the naming issue, I discussed her care and then was happy to leave my puppy, Hazel, and went on my way. When I returned to pick Hazel, I was pleasantly suprised to find her looking much better than she had after appointments with other much more expensive groomers. Better than that, Hazel had made a new friend and was very pleased to be there with Froy. The bottom like is that both Hazel and I look forward to our next visit to Bubbles Dog Grooming, formerly named Mr. John's. I'm bummed to say that I've had two frustrating experiences here. But today was the real kicker. I called YESTERDAY to set up an appt. I was told to come in between 8:30-10 to drop him off. I worked from home so I could drop him off and pick him up, but when I got there it was closed. So I called and the owner told me they decided to close today because they only had 4 customers scheduled. When I asked why he didn't call to tell me, he couldn't give me a straight answer but just said they thought about it but 4 people wasn't enough customers and just wasn't "worth it." Ultimately, that's just bad business. There needs to be consideration for people's time. Especially your customers. read more

I can't recommend Mr. John's grooming enough. I have been going there about every 4-6 weeks since I rescued my MaltiPoo, JJ last year. Froy (owner) is the warmest, kindest man ever and I always feel so safe leaving my little guy with him! JJ loves him and is always excited to see him. I drop him off at 8:30, and between 11-1 I get a call to pick him up. Froy takes the dogs out to pee during the time they are there, and they're always separated which is good because JJ hates dogs It's a fair price ($80 for his size) and it gives me a few hours free to run errands etc. He comes out looking like a NEW DOG every time and smells sooo good. People always complement his cuts! I ask for "puppy cut". If you've never used Mr. John's, just keep in mind that if you call for an appt, it's not a 1:1 grooming slot. Only reason I would go back there is because the ppl there are so nice, and you don't need months in advance appointments. Nails weren't cut, the paw hairs were still ruff, I asked for a schnauzer-cut but it was a bit off "schnauzer". Mr. Johns is not as good as we thought he was, had a cut last year. The cut cost $90.00 and it was okay. But recently went a week and half ago, he was late showing up, which caused me to be late with dropping dog off. He charged $110.00 this time with no explanation until I asked why a $30.00 increase. First and last time here yesterday. My dog came home from here with a fresh cut on her belly. They didn't even bother to tell me. As soon as we got home I was giving her a belly rub and saw it. She was still spotting little drops on blood all over my bed and sofa. Usually when I pick her up from getting groomed she is happy and prancing around showing off how good she looks, but when I picked her up from here she was shaking and scared, probably because she was in pain. She has also been licking at her paw pads nonstop since she came home and they are pink and swollen. They were fine when I brought her in. Not sure what they put on them but it seems to be causing an allergic reaction. John also did not cut her anything like the photos I showed him. When I brought this to his attention, he had a bad attitude and argued with me. While he was arguing with me he was handling her pretty rough on the front desk which really upset me- she's an old 6 lb dog and can't handle being a roughhoused. Even after he made two separate touch-ups to the cut, it still looks horrible. She was supposed to get a mullet and instead got a bowl cut, and it's uneven all over her body. I've given her better haircuts before and I have zero training. He trimmed down the fur on the back of her neck where the bottom of the mullet is supposed to be, so it blends in too closely with the fur on her back and doesn't look like a mullet. I'm so upset because the previous person at a different grooming salon 3 months ago also cut her mullet wrong, so I let her hair grow out long and shaggy for 3 months so we could start fresh with a better job, and after waiting all that time and spending all this money it still looks terrible. Now I have to wait a few months for it to grow out again and when it does, I'm just going to cut it myself because it's so aggravating that she keeps getting horrible hair cuts and I don't want her to get nicked and be bleeding again. Also, she was here for over 7 hours before I called and asked why I hadn't received a call to pick her up yet. He had called a different customer (he read back the phone number he called as a 510 area code, and mine is not 510) and didn't realize he had never notified me that she was ready. read more

My dog has had some excellent cuts here. However, for the past 10 days since his last grooming, we have been fighting dog lice and fleas that came from this place. How do I know it came from here? He never gets boarded or tumbles with other dogs; he did not start itching until he came back from the groomer. Our house has no other pets and we are a very clean household. I called the owner to inform him about the situation (not even to blame) and he kept asking me what lice was. I spelled it out, described it, but somehow could not make him understand. I can only assume that the grooming tools that were used for my dog were not cleaned after cleaning an infested dog.
