TL;DR: My dog has razor burn all over his belly and nicks on his ears and armpits. He also has what looks like bites. He's on flea meds and I've never seen a flea or these bites on him before. Don't take your dog here. I was recommended this place by a friend. I'm pretty sure they're friends, so I was hesitant to leave a review. I told him that I just needed the basics. Sanitation cut, glands, and nails. I dropped my dog off at 10. I called at 2 and he wasn't ready. I don't know how you need 4 hours when I made an appointment, but whatever. I finally got to pick him up around 3. Was charged almost $100 and was griped out by the guy saying that next time he had to "do all that" it would be $120. All that? He did way more than I asked. I am actually find with that. Hair grows out. I'm not okay with the nicks and razor burn. He's been licking and chewing himself for 4 days. He never used to do that. He keeps licking his anus, which worries me about how gentle they weren't with expressing him. The cut itself is super choppy looking. Like he has short spots and long spots right next to each other. But even if he looked perfect, I'd be upset by the razor burn and the little nicks. I wish I had listened to myself. I really didn't want to leave him there. My brain kept screaming for me to leave. I should have listened. Now I had to spend another $40 on hot spot sprays and skin soothing lotion. read more

Since my first review, I've taken my Yorkie, Oliver (OA) to Kutz for Mutz two more times, in April and November 2024. When I picked him up after the April appointment, OA, he seemed fine and not at all stressed out. However, while in the car on the way home, I noticed he was squinting, and his eyes were watering. I assumed that maybe the groomer had accidentally gotten shampoo in his eyes. Later that day, however, I noticed that one of OA's eyes was bloodshot red, like when a blood vessel bursts. The entire part that is normally white was fire-engine red. Before the end of the evening, both eyes were bloodshot and watering. Still, I thought it was caused by shampoo in his eyes during the grooming session. The following day, when OA's eyes hadn't cleared up I started researching to try to find out if shampoo could have caused this. Most of what I read was that that type of eye problem could most likely be caused by a deliberate action, which I don't want to state here, because I can't prove anything. Still giving the benefit of the doubt, and knowing that OA didn't seem at all stressed out when I picked him up, I chose to believe that shampoo in the eyes was the culprit. My heart hurts every time I think about this, because I never should have taken him back, and I should have taken him to the vet (please don't judge me, I know I made a mistake here). In November, seven months after his second session with Kutz for Mutz, I made another appointment for grooming. Before I left OA there, I mentioned the previous issue to Darrell. He assured me that they use baby shampoo, and that that wouldn't affect OA's eyes. Still, when he handed OA off to the person who would be doing the work, he instructed the groomer to be careful with the shampoo. Within 30 minutes of dropping OA off, Darrell called me to tell me that the reason OA's eyes had been red after the previous session in April was because he had fleas (which was new to me). I was completely perplexed because I didn't see how having fleas could cause what appeared to be broken blood vessels in my pup's eyes (which, by the way, took about three days to clear up). I didn't argue with him. I just wanted my pup to be okay. When I picked OA up from the November appointment, he, again, seemed stress-free. It wasn't until after I had been home for a little while that I realized that the only sign of OA having been groomed was on his face. The hair on his body was still just as long, his nails didn't seem to have been trimmed, and there was no sanitary trim. At this realization, I decided not to take OA back to Kutz for Mutz again, and to find another groomer. I understand that Darrell and his team have been in business for a long time and I respect that they have received some excellent reviews. After OA's wonderful first visit, the two subsequent sessions left me unimpressed and feeling uncomfortable about leaving my 8.5 pound Yorkie there again. And the fact that I always tip very well, I thought that OA would be well taken care of. Unfortunately, this was not the case. read more

Unprofessional. Spoke to Darrel and he asked what kind of dog and what size. I told him I have a 50lb golden doodle and he laughed and said "yeah no.... I'm not taking dogs of that size right now." Darryl hurt my dog. When I first took my dog to Kutz for Mutz, the haircut was phenomenal. My dog had never looked cuter. My whole family agreed that the steep price was worth it because of how cute he was and how good of a job Darryl did. However, the second haircut was subpar, that was the least of our concerns. His behavior is what sparked our deep unrest. When he came back, he fell into a deep depression. He became very squeamish whenever we tried to pet him and tried to bite us. He stayed in this foggy state for days. He also got razor burns and has been very very low energy. He also appears to be licking his anus very frequently which is unusual. I think the main issue here is that Darryl, the main guy, is allowing assistants that are terrible at cutting hair and grooming dogs do the bulk of the work. Unacceptable. read more

Avoid! My poor sweet dog injured and messed up after being groomed here.He has cuts and razor burn all over his belly and genital area and in addition to being injured was sad/depressed/down acting weirdly out of sorts for a full week. He also got a terrible haircut that was exactly the opposite (!!!!) of what I asked for but that's nothing compared to the injuries he sustained! Avoid this place, it should be shut down. read more

Kingston had been going to Angel's Dog Groomer for 10 years until the owner Glennis had to stop cutting hair due to health reasons. Glennis and Kingston were great buddies! Darrell, the owner is the only person I trust to give my dogs haircuts. I think he used to raise Kerry Blue Terriers (gorgeous creatures) anyway I mention because he's good with dogs of all sizes. My dogs come home looking Westminster Show ready. I couldn't be happier. Now like all artists, Mr D can be a little quirky, so give him a compliment or say something nice. I'm pretty surprised by all the great reviews of this place. This groomer was one of the only ones available to take my dog (several others I called said they "Didn't have time for new clients). While the owner of the salon was quirky but not unpleasant, I actually saw one of the workers roughly toss my dog into one of their cages. I was shocked and he looked at me and noticed I saw what he did. I didn't want a confrontation so I didn't say anything but I was absolutely shocked that he would handle a dog so poorly, especially my dog who is timid but well behaved. I felt awful for sending him there. Another thing to note is that the owner has about a hundred birds chirping away in their cages. I can only imagine the stress the dogs must feel in addition to having to be groomed to have to listen to the constant loud chirping. I really didn't know what to expect by bringing my Bebe to Kutz for Mutz. I brought in a Lhasa Apso and they returned a Chinese Crested Dog back to me. However, I did ask them to cut it all the way down to the skin and style his hair to cover his blind left eye. They did exactly what I asked. So, I can't really complain. Bebe has been getting home rice bowl chop chop haircuts for the past 3 years. It always looked like his mommy cut his hair! It's always easy to call and make an appointment, and I love how Daryl (the proprietor) always answers the phone himself -- it gives Kutz for Mutz the charm of a small-town business. They're great at what they do -- no one else we've tried even comes close (e.g., when we tried nearby Petco in El Cerrito, it was a total disaster -- Lex came back completely shaved, with his skin scraped off in places, and he caught a bug that required antibiotics from the vet). The owner Darrell is rude and always in a foul mood! He constantly changes his prices and has severely cut our dogs. His cages/crates are flithly and unsanitary. Our dogs often come back with fleas and ticks. Just overall bad service, and horrible atmosphere for our beloved pets. He often complains about the dogs he is grooming and their owners. Wow. This was my standard poodle puppy's first ever groom and I'm incredibly impressed. Darrell obviously knew what he was doing and took his time with our dog getting him used to the grooming process and all the sounds and smells of the place. I was expecting a standard puppy cut with the shaved face and paws but Darrell and his team went all out and gave us the cutest teddy bear cut! TLDR: Been here twice and have been disappointed both times. Poor service. Owner and staff don't look like they like dogs or their jobs at all. Both times, the job was incomplete. First time, I brought my senior poodle in for a full service grooming. The haircut was not bad, but after going home, I noticed that the ears were left untouched. I know that because I had previously trimmed them myself and they looked pretty uneven... which is why I went to the groomer in the first place. I also noticed that a few of his nails were not cut. It's one thing to let me know that they weren't able to cut his nails due to certain reasons... that's fine as long as I'm aware. However, they didn't even bother telling me and probably hoped to get away with it. Second time, I brought my puppy in. Same thing happened. Nails and ears were not property cleaned and cut. By that I mean they only cut areas that were easy and skipped a few nails. This time, I called them out and they got super upset and basically blamed it on my dog. It has nothing to do with my dog btw, as another groomer managed to do the job perfectly. In conclusion, this place is OK with haircuts but completely incompetent with ears and nails, which is kind of the main reason I take my dog for professional grooming. read more
