A few months ago, we visited about 30 minutes before closing and no one offered to help us for at least a good 15+ minutes (and even then we got help only because I physically tracked someone down who was helping another customer when I couldn't find anyone else after waiting so long -- and he was helpful but seemed to be the only helpful staff member in the store that night). This was my second visit and both times I had to *ask* for help -- no one greeted me when I came in or asked if I needed help, although my body language should've clearly communicated that I did (i.e., constantly looking around for someone to help me). By the time I found some help, I was very frustrated and decided not to buy the pet rabbit my daughter was admiring after all. Also, there is not a huge selection of items for smaller animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters. And to make things worse, when I left, two employees were outside taking a smoke break. On a positive note, this store has some pets that other local pet stores may not have -- like the rabbits, for instance. And I like that they host a good number of adoption events. I wish I could give more stars because I love local businesses, but the staff just didn't have the level of professionalism and courtesy that warrant a higher rating. I WOULD PUT ZERO STARS IF ALLOWED. I was HORRIFIED to personally see a store clerk throw away a bag of goldfish and shrimp that still contained live goldfish and shrimp. When I brought that bag of dead fish (minus a few that were still very much alive) to the front if the store to ask if I could have the live fish, I was told that they were all dead, and that goldfish still swim when they are alive. THIS IS ABSOLUTE HORSE SHIT. I then told the store clerk that I was taking the fish and demanded they be put in a bag with clean water. She seemed very hesitant but obliged. I don't completely blame the store clerk because I know she was probably just following her managers orders. BUT THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. I am now trying to nurse these two fish back to health, fingers crossed they survive. PLEASE BE AWARE, this is not acceptable and this behavior needs to stop. I will take my business elsewhere from now on, this pet store has a very unethical way of treating their animals, who knows what else happens behind closed doors. read more

They carry cat litter- recycled pelletized newspaper. It's similar to the yesterday news brand but a little bit cheaper here or comparable to chewy.com I like the fact not only does Pet Supermarket also have it in stock, it's $16 with tax for 26lbs, but they have a points program as well. 100 points gets you $5 bucks off. While you can buy 2 smaller bags ( 12 lbs each at $6 ea) of similar product for $12 at 24 lbs, I find my local Walmart runs out of it a lot since it's a new product to them and no points program. Chewy.com offers similar at 30lbs for $19, so $3 more than Pet Supermarket but you get a little more poundage. However, free shipping at chewy kicks in after $49. So you would have to buy 2 at time to save and stock up. I find the pelletized newspaper cat litter is much easier to clean up after. No fine granules to sweep after, slides right off into the dumpster or garbage bag without sticking. Overall, for my needs, I am glad Pet Supermarket offers this consistently and locally. read more

Great selection of toys and treats although a little pricy. The employees are very friendly and helpful. They quickly greet us and our dogs and ask before giving our dogs free treats. I regularly visit this establishment for small treats for my dogs or to get them toys. Our dogs' favorite toy to get here is the orange and blue Chuck-it wheel toy (shown in the attached picture). Eventually they tear it up but it lasts for months! Pet Supermarket used to sell this shampoo that attached to a hose that was very handy when giving our dogs baths outside but I do not think they carry it anymore. read more

I was really impressed with the cat food variety and also pricing. I saved $5 on Science Diet and the price without the coupon was still less than the prices at Pet Smart. The lady at the counter was very friendly and helped sign me up for a VIP card. I also noticed they have a vet service every Sunday from 10-11:30 for vaccinations by VIP Petcare. No appointments are necessary and it is very appealing to me with a busy work schedule. read more

Unfortunately they don't carry the dog food that I give to my dog so I probably won't be frequenting this place much even though it's close to home. From what I saw the prices are slightly better than your typical pet stores like Petsmart and Petco but nothing too significant. I also noticed that though the cashier at check out was cordial, she wasn't overly nice or helpful. When I walked in I didn't get one hello or welcome and though I saw a few employees walking around, no one offered assistance. Just a bit disappointing. I probably won't be coming back unless it's for a treat run, but even then their bully sticks are pretty pricey. Usually I find better deals online or at Unleashed. Sorry, I wanted to like you but lack of customer service and the fact that you don't carry my preferred dog food just doesn't make for a working relationship in my book. read more

I too enjoy the convenience of Pet Supermarket as well as the smallness in comparison to PetSmart. My dog has a liking for one particular toy that they offer there (we're on Bunny number 6, I think) and every single time I go in whether it's to spend $3.99 on a little squeaky toy or $39.99 on dog food, I am treated the same. I was quite impressed with Pet Supermarket. I was expecting a small, run down pet store, but it's actually a good size and very tidy. There's a bunch of options for pet food and they carry some of the harder to find dog foods. Also, if you sign up for their VIP (Very Important Pet) card, you can get a free bag of food after purchasing 10 bags (hey, any savings is good savings right?). They have vaccination clinics every now and then and it sounds like they're capable of doing a wide range of services at the same time. So if you're looking for that sort of thing, I'd definitely give them a call for specifics. The entire store is very neat and clean, including their fish tanks (I find that these are often neglected in small pet stores). The staff was very helpful--I had at least two associates offer their help while I was there, and it was a busy Saturday. They seem to have a good variety for all types of pets, not just cat and dogs, so it's definitely worth visiting for any pet lover. read more

5 stars for Pet Supermarket! A large and well-chosen offering of pet supplies, squeaky toys, fancy dog treats, high-end pet food (Wellness is the best). The staff ALWAYS says hello when you walk in, and they are well-versed in all things doggy and kitty. Anything you need for Fido or Fluffy is within this building and they are very conscious about promoting health and wellness. They provide in-store vaccinations, and they have a VIP program that gets you your 10th bag of food free, pretty good deal! You won't see that from Petco, I can tell you that. The Happy Hips organic chicken breast treats with glucosamine and chondroitin are a must have for anyone with elderly dogs. read more

Granted it was out first time ever going into that store we looked around some very high pricesm we were gonna get meal worms but when we looked at their medium they were small and mostly dead, we decided to buy 24 crickets which were almost $4 which is crazy better to just shop at Petco get nicer people and better products, will not be returning here. read more

I have to hand it to them that for such a small store, they probably have the most extensive selection of alternative dog foods (read, not corn and meat by-product crap that's likely going to shorten your dog's life by a few years and hasten onset of cancers, arthritis, and skin allergies) I've seen outside of a little alt-dog-food store in Mesa, Arizona. They also let you play pat the bunny with real live bunnies (please, parents, keep your neurotic children from incessantly tapping on the glass of the ferret and bunny cages. Hey, did you know that sometimes ADD and hyperactivity can be addressed by also not feeding your kids corn, meat by-product, and chemically laden crap? Who knew!) I also dig that they have pretty late hours for such a small place in Cary (I think they close at ten, and they had awesome holiday hours-- thanks staff for working so late!) It's also worth swinging by the little sample section they have caddy (or should I say "catty" har har) corner to the check out counter to try out new, alt-health dog (and I think cat) food. The management is Superb at this store location. I highly recommend some kind of reward for your employees at this store. When I went in last week for the first time to get necessary supplies I did receive Great service! Tonight I decide to take Stanley for a walk to the store to meet heaven. I use the word heaven only because I knew Stanley would love it at his first visit. When met the employees tonight, I knew I was not mistaken to be there. It was truly a heavenly experience! Let it be noted, that the first person who greeted me was dressed like an elf, her name was Kayla. I told her I was going to need some help. She was busy at the register with another elf. She assigned me a young gentleman named Chris. Kayla made sure that Chris gave me A checklist. Which I think is a wonderful idea for beginner owners of a dog. Hats off to this company for the checklist. Anyway, Chris took me through the whole store helping me with my ideas of what I wanted and what I thought I needed. This store is small, but they have basic pet care supplies. I wish they had a larger variety of Blue Buffalo cat food. Their prices on litter, food, etc. is slightly higher than Petsmart at Crossroads. The staff is nice and offer to help you carry your purchases to your car if they're heavy. The store does send out periodic coupons in the mail and they help with cost - offers like "get $2 off an order over $10." every bit helps. I've been going here for two years for all my pet supplies. Everything was great I just hate being lied to and strung along. They had a promotion where you get one bag of pet food for free after 10 purchases. I made it to 10 in around March or April they told me it would be mailed. Come May same thing as well as June and July. I'm now up to 15 bags. It's not about the money it's the principal. I go every month to buy food, toys, grooming supplies and all I ask is they honor promises it was never mailed. Needless to say after asking about it for 4 months and waiting patiently I decided I would rather get my food next door at the grocery store Lo and behold much cheaper for the same food about $2 less and they honor all promises. The staff was nice and curious so my qualm is not with them. Just how that company does business. read more

Pet Supermarket has a nice inventory of supplies. One of my kids wanted gerbils and we got a good setup--cage, pets and all--easily with a reasonable price. They have some good supplements for dogs like Brewers yeast (natural flea/tick repellant). Some things just reveal what a franchise is all about. We shop here regularly, and have earned the "1 free bag of dogfood" for buying 10 of them. What they don't tell you is that they will send you a postcard that you must bring in to get your free bag. If you lose or misplace the postcard, no freebie. If you don't bring the postcard with you, even though they can look you up in the system and you have ID, too bad so sad, no freebie. Oh, and the postcard expires in a about 2 weeks, so you better use it quickly. Oh, and one more thing, you have to PAY the TAX on your free bag of dog food. It's like, "OK, we'll give you your dang bag of dog food, but we don't really want to. You are going to have to work for it, do it just how we like you to do it, and we want a few bucks from you anyway. We can't have customers that are TOO satisfied..." Most pet stores are overpriced... this place especially so, at least when it comes to reptile supplies. For example, a Zoo Med Night 40-watt bulb can be purchased on Amazon.com for $4.89. At Pet Supermarket, it's listed as $9.99. They also sell basic clamp lamps (silver colored dome, they lack the ceramic socket base of the more expensive models) for $18.99. You can get the exact same thing down the street at Lowes for $7.85... less than half what Pet Supermarket is asking. Not too long ago they started selling reptiles. They are also overpriced. Don't buy reptiles from any pet store... wait for the Repticon Reptile and Exotic Animal Show that comes around to the NC State Fairgrounds a few times a year. Instead of paying $60 for an underweight, possibly mite-ridden (I know they've had mite problems in the past) baby ball python, you can pay $25 to $30 for a healthy baby at the reptile show, direct from the breeder. Or, there are plenty of animals on Craigslist that need new homes. This place is looking to rip you off. If you are looking for dog food, they do have that. But instead of paying a premium for dry kibble, consider feeding raw. It would be comparable in price to what you're paying for the processed food (possibly less), plus it's easy on their system, great for dogs with allergies, keeps their teeth clean from chewing on bones, and is the most natural food you can give them. A few raw chicken leg quarters, raw eggs, liver, kidney, heart, gizzards, stomach, etc. Give them a good variety (80% meat, 10% bone, 10% organ meat) and you'll have a happy, healthy dog for less. read more

The worst possible service and dog food! So tonight we went into the Pet Supermarket by the HEB in our neighborhood to return some dry dog food we'd bought there that had been making our dog very very sick and vomiting for several days. This rude cashier named Noah refused our return even though Jose who had sold it to us was standing right there! After trying to get an explanation he told us to "get out"! Another man who had heard everything also left without buying anything appalled at what he'd witnessed and told us he would report them to the management and that we should report this kid as well. We have shopped at Bark n Purr and Thomlinson's for years without ever having an issue and they not only know how to treat a valued customer but they really know all of their products and are educated in what they are selling! I don't think this kid Noah even made it through highschool! We will NEVER step foot in that store again, or any Pet supermarket location and will tell our family and friends to boycott them as well! There is nothing "super" about these stores or their products and definitely not their service!!! We will spend our hard earned money at Bark n Purr and Thomlinson's where they remember this is still Austin Texas and they treat their customers with kindness and respect while delivering great products and service! read more

NEVER GO THERE! I went in there looking for a hamster and was confronted with male hamsters being kept in the same enclosure. Many had scars covering their face and a few even had open sores that were still bloody from fights they had gotten into. On top of this the smell of urine hit me square in the face when I walked in the door and when I traced it back to where it was coming from I found it lead to 'feeder' cages in the back where there were mice covered in urine to the point their fur was stained yellow. When I brought this to an employees attention I was directed to a gentleman named 'Chris' who told me they had simply not been changed for the morning yet...It was 2 pm and the amount they had on them had to be from DAYS OF NEGLECT. I was so sickened by this I managed to get a video later of it in the hopes to raise awareness about this disgusting establishment. I recently moved near this store and took my dog there to the pet vet clinic for his booster shots. I am new to the area and did not know any vets so I gave them a try. They were great, friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and thorough and my dog loved them. Highly recommended. The staff in the store is great as well, very friendly and helpful. The store seems to have everything we need. It is probably priced a little higher than some place else, but I'm not going to waste two dollars on gas to save a dollar. They are close enough price wise and I live around the corner. Great place. read more

Found a dead hamster in a cage, told the manager and she was apologetic. Then found a dead snake--which they claim was alive that morning and was still alive then but they couldn't get it to move for me. It looked all dried up and shriveled--they said it was just about to shed. Reptile cages were very dirty, including the snakes--many pieces of excrement which would mean cages have not been cleaned in weeks. Water filthy. All hamsters on antibiotic water because they came in sick--according to a guy who works there. That would explain the dead one. He had also said he just moved a few to the back as they were too sick to stay out front, but he missed the dead one? Two tortoises looked sick/dead, but did move when I asked to see one. After some online research, feel a letter to corporate would fall on deaf ears based on lots of ex employees writing of how the company is run. Worst part is when I was asking/telling them about how sick I felt that the animals were treated and asking about the problems, no one had anything to say about it--they just looked stunned like they couldn't believe someone was telling them this stuff. Go to PetSmart or Petco. I have been a regular customer of this place (like the variety of high quality dog and cat food/treats), and today was the worst I have ever seen it. I have noticed some dead fish/dirty cages before, especially the rescue cats at the front which they said they just had not gotten around to cleaning them yet. I will never shop here again, but may go in to check on the animals. I am still gonna write a letter. read more
