I'm a regular at Pet Food Express and come here just about once a week to bath Lola. Lola is 1-1/2 now and up until 6 months ago I had to carry here into the wash tub because she was so scared of it. She knows the drill now and no longer resists her bath. She actually looks forward to going to the scale to weigh herself and then into the bath. We have been bringing Huckelberry to pet Food express for baths between his regular grooming. Normally we are greeted on our entry and the staff are friendly and helpful. Today was a totally different experience. When we walked in we were totally ignored. The staff were standing around talking. We were not greeted at all. When we got back to the pet wash area one staff member was busy cleaning the stations down. As he was about to leave, I asked him politely if he would please give me a couple of towels he pointed to where they were available. At that point I had my dog up on the wash stand. It's very clear from their signs you are not to leave pets unattended and I was by myself. I pointed that out to him and he repeated that I could get as many as I wanted. He made no effort to hand me a couple of towels which were easily within his reach and would've been helpful to me. I had to unhook my dog, pick him up and carry him over just to grab a couple of towels. I don't Know if it is a result of Covid or if customer service just doesn't matter at this pet Food express anymore. read more

Great customer service. Very clean environment. I love the self serve bath. It's limited to time so you can actually bath 2 small dogs at once. The time limit allowed is about 20 minutes (I think). It's a good enough time to bath your dog well and blow dry with the blow dryer. The hooks on the wall really helps to keep your dog in place. The overall experience for my dog is very positive. Free dog treats for your dog too! I weigh my dog each time on the easy to use scale so I know if I need to cut back on his treats or he is in shape. read more

They also carry a few brands like Kiwi and Bixbi, which we love for our puppy and they usually have deals like buy 3 get 1 free etc. I also very much appreciate their pet washing station. Very very disappointed with this place. Purchased a dog wash token and was cut off half way through my dogs bath, she still had soap all over her and I had to leave her mid wash to go up and buy another wash token to finish her bath. They cut off after 25 minutes and there is no signs and no one informs you when you purchase that your time is limited! I have always gone to pet supplies plus to wash my dogs and they don't have a time limit, thought I would try it out here as I was stopping in anyway and figured I would make it easy. Great customer service, very knowledgable staff and many healthy food options! Today I stopped in to purchase some items to continue training my dog. I'm also in the process of transitioning her from kibble to a raw diet, but because vets don't recommend raw diets, I wasn't getting much help or recommendations from my vet. I walked into Pet Food Express and honestly felt a bit overwhelmed by the selection and where to begin. Anthony spoke with me for probably almost 30 minutes about my options and narrowing them down. He was very knowledgeable and even shared with me what he feeds his dogs. I am someone who has to research everything through and through before making a decision, but after talking with Anthony, I made a choice right then and there and feel really good about it. His understanding of food, nutrients, dog health, etc really eased my mind to where I feel I made the right choice in raw food for my dog. If not, we will simply try another one. tl;dr -- This store is the most caring, above and beyond customer service, blow your socks off customer care. They dont want to just sell you stuff. They want your pet(s) to thrive. Warning, this story is sad. I had a dog named Nurgle. He was a Blue Heeler x Kelpie cross. I adopted him from a shelter in Texas and he came with me when I moved back to California. Nurgle was special; he was a service dog for me. And on several occasions, other than doing his regularly trained tasks, saved my life multiple times. He was an incredible dog that touched the lives of everyone around him. He's always been a picky eater because of a health issue (that did not impact his working capability) So Pet Food Express ALWAYS came through with something else he could try within his -extremely- specific dietary restrictions. They ALWAYS upheld their return policy if he didn't like it (which was OFTEN.) They always gave him cookies in store. Always said hi to him and gave him a ton of love. Even tried to make him more comfortable when I took him for a bath. (He hated them.) About a year ago, Feb 2018, his behavior shifted dramatically. I'll spare a lot of the details here because it's a little complicated but he then also started to have seizures in June '18. Medically, he started to decline. Refusing even more foods and he stopped trusting a lot of people. He retired from his duties as a service dog. But one thing he never tired of was Pet Food Express. There was ALWAYS a happy face that he *loved* to give him treats and ask how he was doing. Absolutely everyone knew him and remembered his dietary issues without me sayin anything at all. Food after food, treats, CBD ... you name it. Nurgle has bought and tried every food (nearly) in the store. He loved his toys, from there too. But the employees never failed to brighten my day and make Nurgle feel like a regular, healthy dog. His behavior, and health took a rapid urn for the worst this year, in May. It became clear to me his quality of life was suffering. I made an appointment to let him take the big nap in the sky. I set a date. When I came to the store to tell Jenny (employee), she began a secret mission. A few days later, Jenny let me know that a few other employees (Chris, Taylor, Sami ... I'm forgetting names. I'll update when I remember the rest) wanted to throw him a puppy party. So the night before his nap, they got TONS of treats, Just Food For Dogs, Honest Kitchen and so much more and let him much and lay in the aisles and be a happy boy around his favourite people. Not only that, they let him wander around the store (and shoplift a cookie or two) sniffing and playing for a few minutes right after they closed, while they were moping up the aisles. We tossed a ball around. We laughed. We cried. But they even went beyond this. Jenny and Sami attending his celebration of life event the following day. I love you guys. I cannot say enough about Jason and the staff at this store in Danville. In the midst of a pandemic the maker of my dogs food decided not to make it anymore. My poor pup has alot of food allergies and his stomach upsets easily. Duck is the only thing he can eat without issues. Went to the Livermore one originally but the self wash stations were closed today, so we had to come to Pleasanton. What a cute store! At the self wash station we were greeted by THE nicest associate, Jasmine- she was so nice to me and my 13 year old fur baby, who was nervous as can be she was so kind to my dog. You can tell Jasmine loves animals. She helped us through explaining how the self wash works. She helped me find the natural conditioner I was looking for, and listened attentively to my concerns for my dog (sensitive skin and has been itching like crazy- not flea related). I have come into this location a few times now for my doggy needs. The people are SUPER nice, helpful, sweet with animals, and knowledgeable. That is the one thing that stands out for me at a pet store. I mean, they're all essentially the same items aren't they? They do have a great selection of goods and all very reasonably priced. It's very clean. I dunno, I always fear the rampant smell of dirty animals when I go into a store, but it is really well kept up here in my opinion. Even with a dog bathing area in the back. The self service dog bathing area seems like a fantastic place to torture your animal, especially larger ones. Luckily mine is small enough so it's easy to do at home. This is my second time using VIP, but my first time using this location because it is closer to my home. On September 11, my puppy of 3 months came to get her second round of vaccines. We went right when they opened and I was pleased on how organized they were. When she got her vaccine, the technician yelled "omg you gave her a nasal." The vet immediately gave her another vaccine and benadryl "just in case." If sh!t goes wrong, you dont say it in front of your client. I also wish I was given a choice to get another vaccine or wait. I'm a nurse, so I understand "sh!t happens" but I'm a new fur mommy. I did not get any information on what side effects to expect. I went to my car uneasy and waited 15 minutes in case anything happened to her. She was having a runny nose and sleeping all day. When I tried to pick her up, she kept crying because her left arm was stuck 3 times and she is only FOUR POUNDS. It took about 5 days for her arm to heal. The following day I received a telephone call from the director who apologized for the incident. The director promised to pay for her antibiotics that would come in the mail as a precaution because she may get an abscess and her next round of vaccines if she comes back to VIP. I never received the antibiotics in the mail. She also suggested she has to get her 2nd vaccine again. It's almost been 2 weeks and I have noticed a behavior change in my dog. She's been having anxiety before we go out and starts crying. I tried to contact the director again to see when is the best time to get her vaccines and when her antibiotics is coming, but I did not get a reply back. I will NOT be coming back here. I hope no one experiences what we have been going through. read more

If you're a dog lover, they have so many cookie/biscuit/treat options, and yes they allow pets in their store. Fido will be forever grateful. Our hamster loves the blueberry biscuits. I love this place. I used to bring my dogs here for vaccinations years ago. Haven't been for a while, but I got a new English mastiff puppy. I was searching for a place to give him a bath myself and Pet Food express came up. I went in to check it out and found they have a great set up. The man working the register took me around and showed me the wash area. They have a room in the back with five or six tubs. All with stairs leading up to them. Each tub has towels and two treats by it. I bought a pack of four washes for under $60! Much cheaper than a groomer would be. You choose the scented soap you want and it comes out with the warm water. Then, you switch the knob to "rinse" to wash off. The last step is the blow dryer. One of the great things about it is if your dog is very large, you can actually wash him/her on the floor as there's a drain right there - no lifting or coaxing into the tub. read more

The store may be on the smaller side for a pet store, but they have a pretty good variety of supplies. Where the store really shines, though, is in the employees, who over the years have only ever been attentive, friendly and thoroughly helpful. Never has anyone even hinted at any sale pressure or hovered, but they are always willing to help and nearby. I should have reviewed this store earlier, but I was reminded to do so after using their delivery system for the first time. Their response to the COVID-19 shelter-in-place has been to encourage pet food delivery to keep things safer for in-store employees and customers. I was given a coupon, ordered plenty of cat food to last for a while and received an uplifting personalized note as well as a bag of free treats. You can schedule what time of day you'd like the order to arrive, and they were prompt and punctual in spite of what must be a huge increase of orders. The doggie needed her annual shots, so we look up the VIP Pet Care clinic's hours at the Pet Food Express. They're at this location every Saturday, from 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM. We remembered waiting forever, in the hot sun, in the Pleasant Hill location and expected the same here. But that wasn't the case. We got here around 2 PM and there wasn't a wait at all. This one was located INDOORS...so nice and air conditioned. Ahhhh. The location is to the left of the Safeway, around the corner. There is a lot of parking. The staff was friendly and efficient. We got the heartworm medication and it comes with a blood test for free. The vet and the tech were super nice and the doggie wasn't very stressed. Total cost for 5-in-1 vaccination, leptospirosis, bordetella, rabies (good for 3 years), and 1 year supply of heartworm meds for small dog, was about $120. They included a free fecal test. Whooohooo! We didn't buy anything from the actual store, but the employees gave the dog a belly rub. Yay! :) read more

BEWARE!!! I pre-ordered my cat's food online and drove to pick it up. It's great because they have it taped off so you stay 6 ft back, etc. due to COVID19. However, something I had ordered was wrong and I Needed to step inside the store to make an exchange. They made me wait outside because there was a shopper inside the store. Only one at a time. Great, right? Well when I stepped in the store, the worker inside the store followed me the entire time I was in the cat food isle and was literally within inches of me the entire time. I would think that the same rules would apply to them. Are they saying I am completely safe and they do not have to keep a 6 ft distance from me or at least some some distance. I felt so uncomfortable and angry at myself for not saying something. I will be freaked out for the next 14 days. and will have delivery going forward. How have I not reviewed them. I've been cat and dog supply shopping--and dog washing--here since they opened and have never had a bad experience. PFE makes me wanna go out of my way to support them. There are few co's deserving of that. The selection of food brands is great and you can find slightly more niche brands that you cannot get at Petco, PetSmart, etc. Their buy 3, get 1 free with the canned food is a good deal and often rivals online pricing. They also have a decent selection of specialty treatment products- allergy remedies, topicals, cbd, and so on. The folks who work here are almost always excellent- friendly and ready to help with any q's regarding diet, etc. I usually know what I want but there've been a couple occasions where I've been waffley and the employees were super helpful. They've also introduced an online order/shipping option, which I've used twice so far- it's fantastic. I didn't get buy 3, get 1 pricing but the free shipping minimum was only $30 and super fast. Both orders arrived with handwritten thank you notes along with the invoice, as well as a freebie sample that aligned with the products I'd purchased. They're doing Nordstrom level customer service here. Another way they're edging out larger online retailers is the ability to mix/match single cans of different flavors in the order. I'm transitioning my cats to another food and it's really nice to be able to order random foods without having to order an entire case and be screwed. Usually, I'd have to do in-store only to do that. I've used Chewy/Amazon a lot in the past but I think PFE just became my go-to. They're doing it right. Also, the cat adoptions on weekends are nicely done- the lady who runs Compassionate Pet Sanctuary (the org that's most often there) is great and I'd absolutely recommend stopping by if you're looking to adopt a kitty. I also appreciate that PFE doesn't sell live animals (crickets aside). We're lucky to have this chain in the bay area. They set the bar. read more

I went into the store because I was having problems with my dog's excessive barking. I got to meet the awesome manager, Casey, to help me pick out a great shock collar for him as well as help me out with bringing the dog food into my car. What a complete gentleman and what a great guy to get good advice from. He was very non-biased and gave me his honest opinion and advice about having the dog wear the collar for a couple of days before putting the "shocking effect " on it.
