After researching insulation techniques, we decided that the concept of True-R value was the way to go. The True-R value concept is that you need to seal the ceiling/Attic first to gain the True-R value of the insulation you are putting in. Kelvin Insulation, 1) Removed the items we had stored in the attic, 2) Removed the old platform (~600 square feet) used to store the items. They also removed the old attic walkway we built for ease of access, 3) Removed all the old insulation, 4) Sealed the various connection points (to include heating vents, vents, framing connections, etc.), 5) Installed fireproof covers on all the recessed lights, 6) Insulated the attic to an R-49 level with a rigid, batts and blowed-in insulation mix. 7) Built a new storage platform of the same size as the old one and built a new walkway across the attic. 8) Put all our stuff back (more like 1/2 since we use this process to clean out the stored items). Kelvin, the owner, is a knowledgeable, straightforward guy who works with you to get the job done at a very reasonable price. The job took two long days, and they cleaned up after each day.
