Ok, so we used to frequent this spot quite a bit when it was Caspian. Since then, it was bought by a new owner, and gutted from the inside out (IE looks the same, but new staff). I was a little concerned going in just because of what I heard regarding how cheap it is, and my logic at the time was "if caspian charges X amount, and its delicious, and Persepolis charges $X amount divided by 2 basically, then the quality of the food MUST suffer as a result, right? WRONG).
Must say I am THOROUGHLY impressed!!!
We got there at about 8pm on a Friday evening. The place wasn't crowded at all, but there were probably about 10 groups total. So we got a seat right away. Took us about 5 mins to get waters/menus etc...but no big complaints there, only mentioned it cause I was THIRSTYYYYY.
After ordering, they bring the standard bread (lavash), along with butter, fresh basil and mint, and onions. We ordered 2 garlic yogurts to go with it, (WHICH WASNT! SEE BELOW), and devoured all that pretty fast while we waited for our food. They didnt bring us any refills on the bread, or anything else for that matter (other than water) without asking. So by the time our appetizers were done, I was starting to think this dinner was going to be pretty bad. Boy, I couldn't have been MORE WRONG!!!
Now for the main courses. I got the soltani, which is a combo of koobideh (skewered ground beef with onions and spices), and barg, which is a steak tenderloin spiced and grilled to perfection. The barg definitely took top billing as it was so tender and juicy and DELICIOUS!!! The koobideh wasn't anything special, I actually sorta disliked it (used to my dad's koobideh, which is GODLY), so defintely stick with the barg if your only going to get one skewer (which is already a TON of food) or the joojeh kabob(marinated skinless chicken). That was also incredibly tender and juicy as well. One note on the chicken, they had one which was skewered breast I believe, and another that was skinless cornish game hen pieces. Not sure which one came with the kings choice (what someone else ordered) but it was also amazing. If your extra hungry, opt for either the soltani or the King's choice. You'll get 2-3 skewers that way, respectively. The koobideh is best for those on a budget....at $8.99, you get TWO skewers and rice and the rest! Cheaper than red robin and 30x as good!!!
Now for portions. They are pretty damn huge, as most Persian restaurant portions are. However, the rice was a bit less then caspian, and I must admit on my two skewer meal (soltani), I ran out with quite a bit of kabob left. I saw other reviews stating how they give you SO much rice....frankly this just isn't true. Now I could see how someone not accustomed to persian food could think it was a lot of rice, but it really wasn't for those of us who are experts in this field. Hence me running out early.
We also got doogh with our meal, which is basically a carbonated yogurt drink with mint. The rest of my group each got one, and normally I would also, but like I said I was super thirsty, and wasn't appealing to me at the time. But seemed like the fam enjoyed it, but nothing to write home about there.
After our meal, we all ordered tea, and then got a few desserts; typical Zoolbia and Bahmieh (hard to describe, but its a VERY, VERY sweet dessert consisting of sugar and honey and other sweet stuff ;) Zoolbia are little balls (I liked these a LOT better), and balmieh is like a spider web looking dessert dripping with honey. Both are delicious though, however I'd say there desserts were just barely above average. Again nothing to write home about (or nothing like going to vancouver BC and getting REAL persian desserts!!). We also got a baklavah, which was the best!
Now for a few things to note:
1) the mast e mooseer (garlic type yogurt, must have normally) was good, but it wasn't yogurt at all! It was sour cream! Really persepolis? Cant skip it because its such an integral part of Persian cuisine, but man, jus kinda sucked!
2) your goin to want to ask for extra onions and basil if you like that stuff cause it def wasn't enough. Same thing with bread and lots of the complimentary sides and such they bring; a little skimpy, and they won't refill/bring more unless you ask.
Oh yeah and the water tasted super funky, like they had stored them in the fridge without a cover on the pitchers, and they also stored meat or some kind of leftover food in there as well.
But all these things considered and aside, it still didn't bring my overall experience down from 5 stars. Delicious and super cheap for Persian food! Normally we spend AT LEAST double if not more on the same food. So that brought it from 4 to 5.
Five people, $120 total with a $18 tip!! HOLY SMOKES that is unheard of as far as persian cuisine is concerned!
So get your butts over there and gorge down some amazing persian food!
PS they had live music (weekends), which was surprisingly REALLY GREAT! read more
