With a bit of time to kill around Schenectady, I decided to pop into Perrerca's Bakery to grab a bite. While I initially thought of getting something sweet, the warm scent of fresh baked Italian bread that I was greeted with when I walked in changed my mind immediately. A quick scan of the sandwich board and my selection was clear. I ordered the egg and pepper sandwich, a simple treat that brought me all the way back to my grandmother's kitchen. The quick fried egg combined with soft green peppers and a little salt is served in between two toasted slices of absolutely perfect Italian bread. Although you could certainly order this with cheese and maybe a little ketchup, I had no need. The simplicity of this sandwich is what makes it perfect. Came here after a night of drinking... Luckily we were still up at 4 am and my friend said Perreca's was open so we ran over. Had a couple of slices of the tomato pie and a sandwich(?) like thing with deli meat and cheese on amazing bread. I'm not saying this just because I was starving and drunk, but this bakery is amazing! I can't believe this was my first time here seeing as I've been to Perreca's more times that I can count. Perreca's Bakery is the standard I use to judge all other Italian bakeries against. Growing up I used to love coming here for their Italian bread and unique pizza slices (cheese sprinkled on top instead of melted in). Everytime I return to Schenectady now I always make it a point to visit Perreca's -- and it's not just nostalgia. On top of the delicious food, the ambiance inside the store is like a timewarp back in time (in a good way). Usually I would comment on "the service" at a restaurant or store, here that doesn't seem appropriate. After trying tomato pie brought into work a couple of times, I finally made the trek into Schenectady for the full Perreca's experience, and it was everything I hoped it would be. We got 8 slices of tomato pie (two to eat then & six to take home), plus my BF couldn't resist getting a muffuletta AND a roasted pepper & fontina sandwich. We found a bench to sit on & had a tomato pie picnic on this sunny 50 degree February day, and ended up digging into the muffuletta also, which was amazing. Whenever I go into Perecca's Bakery, I enter for one thing and one thing only. . . the most spectacular and pure slice of Sicilian Pizza. The marinara sauce is divine, and the bread is perfection. A flavor medley of wonderfulness is what this slice of perfection guarantees every time I indulge. I will say. . . the Italian bread is pretty decent too. There are a multitude of specialty cheeses, meats, olives, and peppers that can be picked up as well. I have not ventured into the desserts, but hear that you can pick up a mean cannoli too. This bread is not something that can be substituted for. I no longer live in the area but I stop in to purchase at least one large long to bring back for the freezer every time I am back in the area. There are only a few things I missed after moving out of New York and this place is one of them. They have been making bread for a very long time and in my opinion nobody does it better. Their bread is the best I have ever had hands down. I've never had anything come close. It's heavy with a nice crust and soft and chewy on the inside. Get there early because sometimes it sells out. Stopped in for a few slices of bread on a tip from a friend.....Left completely amazed. First it was the best customer service I had for my time in NY. I had a breakfast pizza with goat cheese, spinach and eggs. Amazing. I asked for a bowl of some of their red sauce and the waiter provided an entire bowl for my wife and me. It was one of the best marinara sauces I've ever had. The waiter was extremely friendly and took me to the back to see the 100 yr old ovens. Oh and the bread......WORLD CLASS! Now we have three generations of our family obsessed with tomato pie. There is nothing more deliciously savory than a slice of tomato pie heated in the oven until the bottom is perfectly crisp. One of the best things I have ever eaten and we have so many good memories centered about eating tomato pie during the holidays or just because. They make the best bread that I have ever eaten. I can't say much more than that! I love historical, authentic, wonderful, done the same way forever things. They do all of the above. Being a southern boy, it's cool to me to see a window full of bread, and a line of people waiting to buy it! I've been in that line and was proud to do it. But that ain't all! They have a whole store full of Italian goodness from cheeses, sauces, cold cuts, to an amazing Muffeletta sandwich. Grew up on Parrecca's bread and it's about as close to NYC bread as you can get. It's got a nice crusty outside and nice and chewy inside and as soon as you walk in the store you can smell the bread. I love also buying the oil cured olives w/ hot peppers and a little soppresata and I love having the fresh bread drizzled with oil topped w/ some tomatoes and onions and on the side have a few slices of soppresata and some olives. Mmmmm...I'm making myself hungry. And with the prices that are unbeatable for fresh home made food, you cannot go wrong. And if you're a little hungry as you're leaving, they usually have some tomato pizza on the counter to get a slice. It's as basic as it gets...dough, tomatoes, and some seasonings, but it really can't get any better. read more

Went there for Restaurant week. I had the foccacia pizza with egg...absolutely delicious. The egg was perfectly poached. Not too runny, not too hard....sometimes it's the little things. I also got the veal ragu and my friend got the cappatelli with buffalo mozzarela. We both loved our meals and took our leftovers home. The pasta is fresh, you can absolutely tell. OUR WAITRESS AND WE VISITED MAY 10,2019 AT 934AM, it began watching the Cook for an entire half hour not change his gloves once, touching food, then handles,then food tickets, germ,after germ and he shouldnt be a cook then the service was not good, Alicia was rude, quick at delivering food to get us out, but when we went to pay our Tabs we asked why the Orange juice was $12.00 for 2 each because usually when u order Orange juice they give you small and free refills but she gave us Large and she was expecting A Tip at the end of the whole deal and was mad she didn't get a tip. Were in the food Service and Restaurant Management and to see this coming from a place that is supposed to be Excellent is very Disturbing to Us and it shakes down to Troubling Management to Allow their Employee's to get away with such Behavior read more

We went to Perreca's on a Sat nite. Before we went, we looked at the on-line menu which was quite varied and nice. I pre picked out the "Bronzino" with sides of their seasonal sautéed greens and wild mushrooms. Additionally, we picked out a couple of nice bottles of red wine from their on line wine list. However, after we arrived at the restaurant, we found that both the menu and the wine list were cut drastically and that not one of the items we had picked out, including the wines, were available. We were told that, at the beginning of the summer, the owner had cut both the menu and the drink/wine list to simplify it. So...we were very disappointed. There was nothing left on the wine list that we particularly cared for, and the food menu was only the classic Italian fare (with the exception of their lemon scallops). Needless to say, we were generally disappointed. Our server however, Christine, was wonderful and did an excellent job of serving us. read more

I dream about this bread from 3,000 miles away. My mother grew up in Schenectady and used to bring this home to White Plains every visit. We always had racks of loaves of their bread in the freezer at all times and I am so beyond sad that I cannot have this on a regular basis anymore. Their pizza is also to die for. Not sure if they still do it, but they used to sell just plain pizza shells you could then take home and put whatever you want on it. Ohhhh, my goodness! The Muffaletta sandwich and the tomato pie are outstanding. A tiny store front with dry goods, mostly pasta and jarred goodies and commercially made pizzelles. The deli case and the window are where it's at! Piled high are loaves of manna from heaven. Crusty Italian bread with a dense, soft inside. The kind that must be eaten immediately if you don't want to break your teeth tomorrow. Great for bread pudding if it does survive until tomorrow. The sandwiches are outstanding. They were out of the Muffaletta sandwiches but they made one just for us! YUM! Extra points for customer service. Tomato pie is intense. YUM! Think sheet pizza with the best sauce you've ever had in your life. It's so good you don't need anything else on it...ever. Two sandwiches, two slices of tomato pie...less than $12. Oh, yeah! No place to sit. Counter service. Tell them what you want, it goes in a bag, you eat in your car (unless you have enough self restraint to make it to an alternate destination). My only complaint is that it isn't very clear that they sell anything other than bread and a couple of deli salads. Bread piled, rather haphazardly, in the window, cupcakes and a few deli salads in the case. There is little indication that they will make a sandwich at all. There is a chalk board and it says "Muffaletta" with no indication that it will come on a sandwich. They have a pannini press, but only two selections. The woman behind the counter didn't really make an attempt to help us out of our confusion, but a young girl came out to help us. There is no sign for the tomato pie. Yes, it still gets five stars. Mmmm... Perecca's! The roasted red pepper and fontinella sandwich is beyond beautiful, the cupcakes are fab, and the tomato pie (do NOT call it pizza) is a tradition. Really, 4.5. We were traveling via Schnectady on our way from DC to Vermont - this was our stop for lunch - both ways. We did the bakery on the way up (takeaway) and it was very good. The three pre-made sandwich options were great, along with the cannoli and cupcake for the road. Simply a great find in a city we've always had luck in. Been going to Perecca's since the mid 50's, with my Dad.I can remember The Steam Engines coming into Schenectady Station, and the Engineer would toss down a bag of coal for the brick ovens, and he'd get a couple loaves tossed up to him.I believe it was the two Grandfathers making the bread there then,in the 90's the Grandson would deliver bread to the Deli's throughout the city, and I believe he is running it now, at least he was when I moved to Florida in 1998. I am 63 now, still own Citrus Airport Shuttle, and I am blessed one of my customers, the Ricards, bring down some of that delicious bread,and a a dozen pieces of tomato pie, when they fly down, and present it to me after the ride,believe me, nothing like it exists in Florida, Divine! read more
