Best Italian bread in Schenectady! Great pizza pies and pasta as well! Service is good.

This review/update is for the bakery, NOT the cafe. Some wing nut has convinced Yelp to lump them together, which is ridiculous because they have different menus, vastly different quality, even different opening hours. Please don't go to More Perreca's. I've tried them three times and they're out... for poor service and mediocre quality. Instead, visit the original bakery on the other side of the wall that knocks it out of the park every time it steps up to the plate with their tomato pie, prosciutto and sharp provolone sandwich with spicy olive oil on a slab of their puffy bread, and fantastic and ridiculously cheap sun dried tomatoes in the little tubs lined up on top of the counter. Get those items, take them home, put the sun dried tomatoes atop a nice salad, and you've got a meal fit for a king. read more

Sat outside while I waited for a seat. This place is pretty busy but has a nice ambiance and awesome customer service. Everyone recommends the eggs and purgatory and although it's good I'm a big fan of their eggplant panino. The bread was thick and the sauce is nice and smooth. The ice coffee was pretty weak but defiantly worth visiting for brunch with friends *** defiantly go there for their bread. Next door is a bakery. I always heard people talk about this bakery but I'm not in Schenectady that often and if I am, I'm not usually nearby. One day I was close to Perreca's for some business and decided to stop in. It's a lot smaller than I thought it was going to be. A LOT SMALLER. But I like that. It reminded me of the bakeries in my hometown growing up in NJ. Fresh bread lined the shelves. They had pastries in the cases. Tomato pie on the counter. Okay, the bakeries in my town didn't make tomato pie, but a guy at work did bring some in back a few months ago for us to try and it was good. There were grab and go sandwiches made on the counter. I went in planning on just getting a loaf of bread and maybe a slice of tomato pie. I walked out with 2 slices of tomato pie, a loaf of bread, 2 cannolis, and 2 of the sandwiches they had on the counter. One was sharp provolone and roasted red pepper and the other was an Italian mix with all the good Italian meats. I would have spent more but I only had so much cash on me. Everything was delicious. I had one tomato pie on the drive back to work. I had the other slice and one of the sandwiches for lunch. At home I ate the other sandwich and we both had cannolis. The cannoli stopped me in my track. Rather than just rush through eating for eating's sake; that first taste had me slow down and savor every bite. I don't know what was different about it, but it was without a doubt the best cannoli I ever had. Can't finish this without talking about the bread. It's crusty. I love that!!! It's so hard to find good bread with a good crust these days. Everything seems to be on the downward slide to a glorified hamburger roll. Go in your supermarket and squeeze the rye bread. It's squishy. Only white bread should be squishy. Bread needs to have a decent crust on it. Perreca's wins on all accounts. Let's put it this way. In the armed services they have a sentence of 3 days bread and water if you do something pretty bad. If I received that sentence and they gave me Perreca's bread...at the end of the sentence I'd ask for another 3 days. I wish I was closer to Perreca's but I'll be back soon. Perreca's Bakery is the place to get real Italian bread. No wimpy ass supermarket French bread here. Just flavor loaded crusty goodness. The tomato pie slices are great and will teach you the simple goodness that is bread and sauce. The premade sandwiches are also good. I'll fully admit to being a little emotional as I write this review. My dear Italian-American mother, who passed away four years ago at the age of 55 loved Perrecca's and their bread was a mainstay on our dinner table every night for the 20+ years we lived in Canajoharie. She worked in Scotia so we would get it fresh several times a week. I live in NYC now, where there is no shortage of incredible Italian bakeries, but there will always be something special about Perreca's. Carbs are awesome... on occasion. Visiting the area, I had to seek out this unique restaurant and bakery again. The history of the bread room is fascinating. I can imagine all the men throwing their yeast rolls and loaves up to the ceiling during the wee hours to rest and rise. First time I came, I had an awesome salad. This tone, I gave in to a pizza craving. My preference would be the salad but the fresh basil on my pizza was certainly yummy. The place is definitely local. A couple folks came in to pick up to-go orders with sandwiches for their office staff. Another couple came in and wanted to place their order for Thanksgiving Dinner to-go. This is a great place for catering orders, my work ordered chicken parm and baked ziti from this restaurant has a catering order along with a salad and also their bread. There was plenty a food to fill everyone and it was Simply Delicious and the bread was amazing. I cannot speak for any of the single dishes because I have never ate in the facility itself other than the catering that has been done by the facility that I work for but I can say that from what I've experienced from this restaurant it is definitely well worth the try. I am definitely recommending this restaurant to anyone who would like to try some delicious authentic Italian food at decent prices for what you get. The reasons for the Stars, this lack of a star is due to the fact that although the bread tastes phenomenal it is a harder style bread which makes it very difficult for me personally to eat I prefer softer breads and the breads that we had at this in particular venue did not meet that standard it was a harder bread but it was Italian bread which normally is a little harder because it's baked so that's a normal thing to see. This is the best Italian bread I've ever had by far. Nothing I've ever had anywhere including LA/SF/NY and Napoli not joking. The crust has a flavor that I've never tasted in any other crusty style Italian loaves. The bread has a fan base so get there early to guarantee that you'll have your loaf! To the reviewer who gave one star because they wouldn't make you a sandwich. Giving a business one star when you didn't even consume their food is just ignorant. I wish there was a flagging option for people who are unreasonable. This place is an institution for a reason, it's fantastic, authentic and it's been there in the same form and hasn't changed. I've been to Perreca's Bakery and the adjacent More' Perreca's cafe a handful of times, and let me tell you, the food is amazing. The bakery has been around for years and is usually busy with people buying freshly baked Italian bread and giant cupcakes. The cupcakes are quite tasty. More' Perreca's is THE place to go in Schenectady if you want Italian food. It's quite authentic, servings are quite generous and the pasta dish I had was incredible. I've also ordered their personal pizzas on a couple of occasions, and they are also very scrumptious. read more

The muffaletta sandwich is a perfection that I cannot describe. I have gone to Perecca's at 1pm to find it sold out because people come to buy their sandwiches at 6am. It is literally the best food I've had since moving to Albany last year. The tomato pie is also fantastic. But, it's their bread that makes them famous. It is by far the best in the region. I never thought Italians had to prove how great they are, but every time I go to Perecca's and get a tomato pie, and loaf of bread the point is driven home. Nothing takes the place of brick ovens. Since 1913 the wood floors have been creaking and the small space has flour on the floors. Italian sundries, are they just to add to the no frills baked goods. $1.90 will buy you the most awesome loaf of bread you can get. $1.25 amazing tomato pie. I would move to Schenectady to have Perreca's every day. The best thing to do is get a hot loaf of Perreca's bread (the round kind works best for this, but it's really up to you), and then walk across the street to Civitello's and get an italian ice. Then walk back to the parking lot and sit in the cute little chairs Perreca's has out and feel European while you eat your hot bread and italian ice. And ignore the fact that they probably don't do that in Europe. Make your own rules. Just don't put italian ice on your steamy delicious bread. It's better in theory and will probably just end with a brain freeze. When you're done, go back into Perreca's and buy like eight loaves of bread (go for the large loaves this time) and half of a tomato pie. Then try to save some for later, but ultimately end up eating it all on the way home. read more

I really love this place. The bread here is the best in the area, by far. However, it does go stale quickly. I will sometimes buy an extra loaf and freeze it or use the stale bread for meatballs. The sandwiches and tomato pies are great. Most of all I love the old world feel to this place, the employees are always very nice, and they really put effort into the business. read more

Having had bread from Perecca's on several occasions (and loving it) and some Tomato pie that a buddy brought to work one day (delicious, despite my hesitance to eat room temp, day old pie), I decided that I needed to try the muffaletta since I had not found a good one since I visited New Orleans nearly 20 years ago. Well, it did not disappoint! Hallelujah! I decided to grab a roasted pepper and fontanella sandwich to have for dinner later, and I have to say that it may have been even more delicious than the muffaletta. If I'm making Italian food, I'm stopping at my grocery store and getting some Perreca's bread. The two are mutually exclusive. You'll get a nice crunch, and the most delicious bread you can find. I have nothing to compare it too, since all other bread I've had don't even come close. Slice it thin, toast it a little and add butter, and make yourself a great breakfast sandwich. It really is the perfect for dipping. Works for everything. I feel like this is the bread rich people eat; and knowing I eat it too makes me feel like one day...maybe one day...I'll be rich too. I'm just kidding, but you know what I mean. It's great bread and I really like bread. And buying high quality bread is an "Adult" thing to do. Original location since 1914 with what seems to be the original interior, with classic creeky wood floors and the fulltime aroma of fresh baked goodness. The bread: Legendary. The service: Snarky. (Fine if you're the Soup Nazi, but a shame in this great little bakery.) The woman who waited on me was rude when informing me about the $10.00 credit card minimum. She was then nasty with me when I asked for a pastry by a different name than they know it. (The pastry was on a tray between the two of us and I pointed directly to it. Regardless of what I called it, it was very self explanatory, so there was no need for her to snark to her coworker under her breath about the issue while she was still assisting me. Rude, period.) My advice to you, the snaky woman: save it for your cigarette break or for a moment when no customers are in the bakery. really. The space behind your counter is not at all large and chances are good that if I am standing at the counter I can hear what you are saying about me while you are behind the counter. Again, the bread: Legendary. After putting this experience behind me I then ventured into the Cafe to meet friends for lunch. The Italian Wedding Soup was very tasty, but rather lacking in meatballs, although I did find half of one. The Sausage and Pepper Sandwich was very good. I grew up in Watertown NY and in Schenectady New York. My Mom's family is from Italy. In Watertown we had great Italian Bread but Schenectady has Perrecas Bread it is the best! Perrecas is authentic, fresh, and I also love to go directly to the Bakery on Jay Street for the real deal feel of the neighbor, the other items like the pizza and so much more. Now the Cupcakes from the Restaurant are in the Bread Bakery! What could be better. Bravo Perreca's keep up the great work. read more

Love this place for tomato pie and off course their bread. When I'm in Sch'dy I try and stop by to pick up some items. My only complaint is what they charge for their cupcakes. Last time there, I added a couple of the cupcakes to my order, I was surprised that they charge $5 a cupcake. The cupcakes are good but personally no cupcake is worth $5 a piece. read more

What a delight to visit Schenectady's little Italy for the first time! I had a wonderful weekday lunch at Perreca's with my parents, toddler and 4 week old. The Italian wedding soup with orzo was the best I'd ever had. My roast pork and broccoli rabe sandwich was alright- a bit on the dry side. My parents loved their orders (cheese pizza with garlic added for one and Italian tuna salad for the other). My toddler liked his mac and cheese but liked my soup better. I was kind enough to share it. We popped to the bakery and got a carrot cake cupcake (no nuts, the way I like it!!!) and cannoli. They were delicious!! We can't wait to go back. The brunch menu looks amazing. I want to go for dinner for date night sometime as well, but hard to get away with two young kids. read more
