Like most everyone else here, I did massive due diligence before I selected a company to install solar panels on the house we bought a few months ago. I got 9 different quotes from 7 different companies (a couple of the companies gave me alternative proposals). I had a few requirements that made our system particularly challenging. First, since we had only lived in our house for about a month, we didn't have much history to use in sizing the system. Second, I needed to get the system installed and green-lighted by SDG&E before the end of the year so I could get the tax credit in 2015. Third, I wanted a solar company that actually did the work itself -- as I learned during the bidding process, some are just front companies that farm out the work to solar installers. Long story short, Perk Solar was one of the few companies to meet all my requirements. Plus, when I met John Perkins -- the owner of Perk Solar -- I immediately knew he was my kind of guy. John is on top of the very latest technology, and I was super impressed by his knowledge and his passion for his work. Although Perk Solar wasn't the lowest bid (they were 2nd lowest), I went with them because I liked John Perkins a lot, and because he promised to make my deadline using the very latest solar panels and technology. He also encouraged me to visit other homes he had done installs on. Solar can be a do it yourself project for a few people but whet your really paying for is their permitting with city of SD and SDGE. There's a process that must be followed and permitting through the city can be a problem. Perk does all of that for you. I couldn't be happier. It took a little time for the order to arrive, but upon delivery the crew was at our door exactly when they said they would arrive. We are very happy with the installation they provided. In 2014 I interviewed over 10 to 15 solar installation companies; some of these were over the phone shady brokers, that will size a system using google maps of your roof or property. I was surprised how many of them do not have a clue what a watt is or would lie, deceive, & insult the intelligence of customers & think they have no concept or full understanding of electricity or solar by attempting to either talk over their heads, with some polished sales pitch, still to offer them an extremely overpriced obsolete technology or inferior PV system. I did not get this with Perk Solar as they recommended the best yielding PV system needed for my East West facing rooftop system. Perk Solar installed my 5kW rooftop system almost two years ago. Forward to Feb 2017; I have had no issues with power generation, system efficiency or defective equipment. It was a great experience from start of planning to finish, excellent communication on the entire project. Perk Solar designed and installed our system 2.5 yrs ago and it's preformed flawlessly. We had plans to be out of town for several weeks, so needed it installed within two weeks or it would have to wait a couple of months. John took the challenge and had permits, install, inspections and SDG&E approval to turn it on before we left. He said it was a pretty easy job, but not so to some of the other companies we received bids from (because it was not being installed on our house). One thing I noticed they did differently than I saw at a couple relatives homes, was the installation was NEAT. No wires or silver conduit exposed. We've gone through two true-up periods and only had to pay about $10 for electricity in two years (including the monthly service fee which has steadily increased during this time). We've have enough over production to cover almost all of the fees too. John Perkins and his team really know their stuff. If you want quality products and quality design and installation, I highly recommend you go with PERK SOLAR. A friend recommended them to us. We just met with John and are going with his company for our house in Descanso. This will be an 8K system on a cement tile 2 story roof. We compared five solar companies before deciding to go with Perk, and my wife and I are so glad that we decided to check out one more company based on positive Yelp reviews. He was the only one to provide a quote as the owner of the company and not just a salesperson. His price was also the lowest of them all. He was up on the roof with me measuring as well as explaining the grounding requirements and came back out to put a solar meter on the roof to determine the best placement of the panels. John is also the electrician, so he is very knowledgable on hooking into our 200 amp panel and explained it all to me so that I had a good understanding and answered all my questions accurately. Another salesperson from a heavily advertised company said that the panels might produce more than they are rated for, but this is simply not true. We believe that after three weeks of research we found the right company to do the job. I had a tape measure handy to measure and offered to use it to help measure. It broke because I stretched it too far. Two days later when John and his partner came back to meter the shade, he had purchased a brand new Dewalt Tape measure for me! We screened a total of 7 different solar installers in the San Diego area. Believe me when I say "Due diligence is its own reward". All the sales people we met with were nice, polite and eager to sell their company's solar PV systems. Most are really pushing solar leasing in a big way, so you can imagine there's money to be made! Perk Solar didn't send over a salesperson, it was represented by the company owner, John Perkins, also owner of Perkins Electrical Co. His approach was very forthright and he was upfront about the fact that he didn't offer solar lease options due to the size of his company, in other words we would have to buy his system outright. When I told him what kind of system I wanted (based on extensive research), he said that was exactly the type of system they specialized in. I was skeptical at first so we screened a few more companies. Due diligence. In the end we decided on Perk Solar based on trust and the fact that we found John Perkins to be a genuinely likable person. We had seen huge differences in both pre-purchase leases and equipment purchase bids for similar systems from installers working for solar leasing companies. For that reason we began to mistrust the leasing companies and had the feeling that they were all about maximizing profit. Perk Solar offered LG 300w panels that nobody else could get in less than six months. The fact that Perk Solar's purchase bid came in $19K (yes, that's right!) below a bid from Costco's endorsed solar provider didn't hurt, and that is using top-of-the-line panels and micro-inverters! For us, buying the system and helping a small young company keep working was the right way to go. Win, win all around. We are happy with our decision to purchase rather than lease, and we were very satisfied with how quickly Perk Solar finalized drawings and met crucial deadlines that had to do with County vs. City Cal-Fire codes. If they hadn't met the time fence of Dec 20th, 2013 (County Planning Office closes for holidays) we would have been subjected to having new Cal-Fire codes that require a 36" setback from roof apex. We would have lost lots of roof real estate for panel placement. Our meter is now running backwards during the daylight hours and we couldn't be happier. John occasionally will call us up and ask us if we've seen the latest results generated by the software that connects us to Enphase' monitoring. He's actually excited for us!
