This was not the first time I came to this Pep Boys at this store. I prefer this location than the horrible one in Stockton. I have been here previously for a brake change, which was no hassle and I think it was the manager who gave me updates ever so often with my car. This was way better compared to the Stockton location, which was a hassle to even speak to anyone about car maintenance. This trip today, I had made an appointment for 9AM for an oil change. I arrived 5 min till 9AM and I wasn't allowed in the store, left in the cold for quite some time. Finally, when I was in the store, maintenance went right away, which was good; however, a couple of things happened that made my experience uneasy. Three of the mechanics were watching the football game, while two of them worked the whole time I was in the waiting room. While waiting there, a woman came in with questions about a hitch and why wouldn't it work. When she left, the mechanics stood around the waiting room mimicking her and made fun of the questions she had asked them about the hitch. This made me very agitated, for making fun of a customer in front of others is very unprofessional, rude, childish, and tacky. There needs to be improvement in some areas for it to be better in its overall rating. 2 out of 5 due to the previous great experience I had plus the very wrongful one today. read more

I cannot express my gratitude to the men working tonight enough!!! The level of customer service far exceeded my expectations!!! Our car overheated today... Pouring water everywhere. We are supposed to go to LA tomorrow to celebrate our 1 year anniversary and have hardly any money... We were quoted 230.00 (max) to fix it and we would have had to cancel our trip all together. Upset we said go ahead and fix it... Such is life. The guys worked diligently to get it done quickly and when we signed the paperwork they handed us our receipt and said..."happy anniversary" NO CHARGE!!!! I could not believe it... I had to come back for a 2nd day to get my brake inspection even though I had them put on four new tires the first day. It would have been nice to have both services done together. I'm upset that they didn't include the tire service in my Carfax report. Also, they charged me $50 just for them to tell me from a quick visual that my air conditioner was beyond repair. I came into pep boys may 20th at about 5:20 pm when they close at 6pm in need of a new tire, I knew it would not be safe enough to drive when I got there they turned me away because apparently they felt they would not be able to to finish by 6 o'clock. So I left and in return after 5 miles of driving my tire pops! On highway 99! I understand we all want to get off work at the time we are suppose to but come on. You might as well change your hours since you stop helping customers an hour before close especially the ones who are in need. Terrible terrible terrible. Firstly, I haven't been to Pep Boys on McHenry since 2006, and here's why. I had a bought a crappy station wagon that didn't pass inspection (my fault). I was fairly new to Modesto, so I picked a giant corporation to fix my car, thinking that they would be honest and give me a fair price (my fault again). In the end, it was a $1400 "repair" to get a car that I had recently bought for $1100 to pass inspection. The damn thing died for good '07. Curse you, Pep Boys! I've since found Auto World on La Loma as my mechanic for life, I hope they always stay as honest and awesome as they have been since I stumbled upon them in 2009. read more

I haven't ever had to go here for any big issue. There was a large piece of plastic or something that came off on the bottom of my car and I wanted to get it fixed. They took care of me right away, let me know what it was for, and then just added a couple of screws back in to get it right back up on my car. I came across this place because of Firestone on Dale refused to take my car even though I made an appointment the night before they had the nerve to say "we did not receive it on our end and we cannot take any walk ins." So I just moved here to Modesto and wanted to see how honest this place was , doing wheel bearings, (do all mechanic work myself) took it in said I need these bearings in and told me they needed to be pressed in when really they just needed to be tapped in and they knew from the start. charged me the full price for about 10 minutes of work said it took them "2 hours" . This is probably one of THE WORST places to go if you want to get your car fixed I've tried to get my blue Saturn fixed multiple times BUT 2 weeks later another problem comes at first I just thought maybe it was MY car but no every time I take it here in 2 weeks comes ANOTHER problem. I came in because my brother recommend he had such great service and knew they were helping him for the needs of his car, not trying to haggle him. So I came today because I had a nail in my tire. As I was going to wait, I was going to walk to a Starbucks while my car gets done. As I'm walking, one van I noticed was following me and being very suspicious, like pulling up in front of me going to the parking lot i had to pass... So I went back to the shop and let the associate know (Emil). As I waited, I was told my breaks needed to be done (which I figured;i had asked if they can check them out), but he told me I'd have to wait longer. This man offered to take me home (I live close by) to make sure I was safe. Seriously?!?! I have not received such amazing customer service and making sure I was ok. So thank you Emil! I have purchased a few headlight bulbs here and after i go around the hallway to the service department and they have installed them for me at no charge. But today the service dept guy said it would be $20 to put it in... uh okay. I just spent $20 on the bulb and now you want another $20 to put it in??? It's not so much the fact that I have to pay a fee, but $20 for this simple task? (I would do it myself if I had the tools) Don't mechanics MAKE like $20 an hour? This one bulb replacement certainly shouldn't take you an hour to do. read more

HERE IT GOES. It been like a week now and this is still bothering me so here i am to tell my review. I bought my tires from amazon and had them shipped to this pep boys to install and had added the alignment as well. Thought every thing went well at first. It was pretty fast i thought when i was heading home. While on the way home i was checking to see if they have fixed the alignment but nope they made it worse now there's some play in the steering which i never had before i had them aligned it. Also when i got home i was under my vehicle to check out the steering parts ,When i turned to look at my rims and and new tires To my F*****G surpise i see bunch of freaken deep brand new scratches. So deep it made me feel like slashes to my body. I checked all rims and all had bunches and deep scratches. I looked at my brakes and other parts that thought it might be caused by the tires but nope nothing. So next day i went back and told the guy that helped the other guy installed the tires. All he had to say is hes sorry ,It usually sometime happens. I was like i have never seen any machine in all my life till this day at any other tire shop do this to any of my vehicle rims. He just said sorry it does happen. F you man! I just left because i didnt want to cuss out or hurt anyone. Also i was so mad i forgot to tell him about my wheel alignment issue. These guys make pep boys company look real bad. Now i got to find and spend more money on new rims. which is going to be hard because i have no job. This is a copy and paste from google maps. I went in for tons of car work and after each time there were new problems. They charged me for doing absolutely nothing and the last time I went in was due to problems with the work they previously did and btw it was $2000 worth of work so you'd hope it was done right.. well let's just say when I left my front driver side wheel was barely secure with 2 of the 4 lugs actually holding the wheel on the other two weren't even tightened. If I were driving on the freeway and lost my wheel and lost my life they probably wouldn't take accountability for it just because of how shitty they are. I took my car in and first they broke a piece on my intake when they were finally done, after 4 days, it cost $1300. It had to be towed within a week and the new mechanic said pep boys without a doubt ruined the engine. No oil!!!!! The car was old so we totally lost the car. They were very rude the whole time also. I feel very torn writing this review. I want to start off by saying that this is not in regard to the employees working today, but rather towards the company, and I'm assuming their policies themselves. I came in today to get a tire replaced on my car. That's it. I came in two hours before closing. There were several other customers but it wasn't crazy and I was told that it would be a quick service and that they would be able to perform it today. We had even selected a tire and agreed to the price. I'm then told thirty minutes later that someone who had an appointment came in so they can't take care of me now. What? I completely understand the priority of appointments, but shouldn't the appointments have been weighed against walk ins from the get go? It was very disappointing. I'd like to say that I'll come back tomorrow to get the tire but I'd rather give my business to another company. The employees were very nice and I could tell he felt bad, but something in your procedure needs to change. Customers should be told immediately wether or not they can receive service. Seeing as how I never need parts for my car because my mechanic takes care of everything, I have to give them 3 stars because they do have a very wide variety of items that you can buy for your car to jazz it up or whatever and their prices are better than most of the other places in town. I needed some reflective tape and tried 4 other places and only Pep boys had it. And they do carry the synthetic oil I like to use in my new car at a lower price than Kragen. read more

DO NOT RECOMMEND ONE BIT. Stopped by because I had a blown tire and it was the closest location. I should have done a little more research, and even though I read some of the negative comments here, I still went ahead. 1. Facility dirty. 2. Employees slow, I noted I was in a rush and the employee working on my car was coming in and out of the shop with no consideration that I had to leave soon, he came in to grab a soda and talk to colleagues in the middle of my tire change. 3. HE SCRATCHED MY RIMS!!! No care that I have nice well taken care of 19"inch upgraded factory rims, he left scratches DEEP on both tires he changed. 4. Oil stain on my carpet from shoes. 5. Grease all over my steering wheel and door handle. 6. Before I left, I CAME BACK to let him know my sensors were going crazy and he needed to reset them (as you should every time you change your tire) He told me "oh, it will go away" 7. Next day I had to go to another Pep Boys 30min away to have them reset my sensors as they should have done to begin with. 8. I called Steve the Manager about my visit and he said he would call me back about my scratched rims and put a claim in and he NEVER CONTACTED ME BACK. SLOPPY SLOPPY SLOPPY PLACE. DO NOT GO HERE!! First off we had our car inspected at another location and they told us our serpentine belt needed to be changed and nothing else was wrong with our car. The only problem was they did not have the tool needed to change it out. So we made an appointment at PepBoys, we got there and they said no problem $70 for labor only (we had already purchased the belt). So we waited, then after an hour and a half they come out and tell us we have a BAD leak in our water pump?!?! So we asked for a price to repair/replace this they told us almost $500!!!!!! So we told them we would have to wait to get the money together and to just change the belt. Another hour goes by and they come back out to tell us there is another problem with the bearings to the pump now!!!! And they wont even change the belt unless we do all of the work now! We asked how much for everything and they told us $1,000.00 or more, they wouldn't know until they got into it! We then took our car to another REPUTABLE company and they said there is NOTHING wrong with the pump or the bearings at all!!! I WILL NEVER TAKE A CAR TO PEP BOYS AGAIN AND I WILL MAKE SURE ALL OF MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY DO NOT EITHER! read more

I have been a loyal customer with them for 2 years. I was told that a tire rotation is included with every oil change, I would even confirm with them when I would arrive at my appointment. They NEVER rotated my tires any time I went in. The most recent time I went in I specifically asked for a note to be made to rotate my tires as well as the oil change. They come back saying that I needed 2 new filters (which I changed myself, and they were needed.) They then proceded to tell me a belt was cracked and need to be replaced and my brakes were at 15% and needed to be replaced. I asked if they rotated my tires and was told they had rotated them that is how they knew about the belt being cracked. I go back out to my car, and one tire had caulking on it, and it was in the same position so I knew they had not been rotated yet again. I went back in and had to wait another 20 mins so they could get what should have already been completed done. I brought my car to a mechanic my family has been with and known personally for over 20 years and he tells me that there is absolutly NOTHING wrong with my car!!! The belt was fine and the brakes had hardly an wear on them. Beware of them scamming you becuase clearly that is all they are in it for is the money. I am highly dissapointed in their service and I will NEVER be giving them my service again. read more

Shady, uneducated ghetto employees. Got my battery changed and my audio stopped working. Needed a key from the dealership, the employees knew this information while giving my keys back but decided not to say anything till after everything was done. I had to go to my car after everything was completed and then noticed. When I went back to tell them, they already had known this but seemed like telling me was a problem. The workers seem like there quite, and hiding something. No hello's or greetings, just awkward looks like im in the hood. I went in and waited 2 hours to be told that if I drove anywhere I would have a blowout on my front right tire.. I asked how much to replace it.. Mind you I drive a small acura.. And the lady told me $400 to replace it.. I didn't have that kind of money at the time... So I left and drove to LA without the change and I have been back and forth several times with no problem.. Terrible service. Just went in to get the tires balanced on my vehicle. They had four guys standing around talking and when the office lady Miranda asked who can help one guys responds I'm off in ten minutes, another guy says I gotta leave by 5:30. Then the other two were closing. By the way it's 4:15pm when I went in and they close at 6. The fact that they were so rude and didn't even bother to try to help but just sit around talking because it's close to the end of the day. So I just said you know what I'll find someone else who can do it and I googled the nearest tire shop and was done by 5:30 already going home. This place is alright. I usually come here when I cant find a part, or want to check another store for something if its not at Autozone or Kragen/O'reily. theirprices are a tad bit high, but you can sometimes find things decently priced. There was an older lady as a cashier that seemed like she hated her job, but i havent seen her in a long time.. The new younger cashier, i forgot her name, but i rememeber he last name sounded Italian, was really nice. As for the Automotive Shop Side, I feel that it is overpriced. Some of the employees are a little unapproachable, while there are some that stand out more than others. I am really bad with names but its the older woman with long blonde hair, tori? i think i dont know. I had a CD player installed in my car, and i had asked if they could try to hurry it up ( i had class in 2 hrs). It took them that entire time to do the job, and i ended up being late. However, The lady was kind enough to give me a what seemed like a 10% discount. As for the actual CD player install, I ended up paying 160 bucks for labor and extra parts. that was expensive... As for the quality of the labor, im not sure. My CD player resets every once in a while when i crank the volume, im not sure if its because of a bad ground, or my battery or alternator sucks, but im putting it out there. I called and asked if they do alignment and they said YES and told them my make and model. Made an appointment and when I got there they said they can't do my alignment because my car was lowered. The manager and the techs were telling me that my car had aftermarket suspension, when it doesn't. All the corvettes have leaf springs and all newer corvettes like mine can be lowered by just tightening the bolt. I thought pep boys would employ smarter people than that. What's worst is that they tried to tell me my car has coilovers when I kept telling them it doesn't. Corvette suspension is not coilover it's LEAF SPRINGS. I've been here several times for oil changes, and once to have my headlights buffed. I'll start with the headlights being buffed, this was about 7 months ago. I paid $80. Not only were they STILL yellow when I picked them up, I couldn't see any better. For $80, I should see a freeking mile down the road! This winter I'll take it somewhere else. My third oil change here was last Thursday. I dropped it off at noon, and said I'd be back at 6pm, so don't bother calling me, I'll just be here. Had to wait half an hour even though I gave them a whopping six hours to do something that should not have taken any longer than 45 minutes. Then I'm handed my paperwork. Nothing was filled out about the courtesy check stuff. I had asked them to check/refill my tire pressure, and my tires were just as flat when I pulled up to get it as they were when I dropped it off. To make matters even less customer oriented, the little sticker on my windshield wasn't replaced, so the old one is still there. What the heck?! You couldn't even take the 30 second to write me a new windshield tag?! You guys need some serious customer service attention. Either hire the staff you need to cover the things you say you'll do, or stop saying you'll do a courtesy check and refill my tires. Ug. read more

Literally the worst car servicing place I've ever been too. I brought them the brake pads needed for my car and just for labor they severely overcharged us. I paid it anyway just because I needed if done answer dropped it off at noon and they said it would be done in a few hours. Currently sitting in the waiting from st 5:30 and it's still not completed. 6 hours for a brake job? Completely ridiculous and also they have very unfriendly workers.
