Walked in on a Saturday for a new battery and installation. They offered a drop-off option, which was great. Emil helped us and turned the screen to show a total of $287, but didn't explain what made up that price. It seemed high, so I asked if that was just for the battery and install. He said yes--that we were only paying for the battery and installation. Later, we realized he had added a "Pep Up Your Battery" package (which we did not request and makes no sense for a new battery) and a "Battery Relearn" (also not requested and, based on my own research, not necessary). Together it was only about $33 extra, but that's not really the issue--the problem is adding services without consent and not being upfront about the pricing. On top of that, when we checked the battery at home, there was still corrosion on the connections. I understand if cleaning that is considered an extra service, but adding unrequested charges and then leaving corrosion that could have easily been scraped off is dishonest pricing and poor service. We only chose this place because we had a coupon for a free install package, and the added charges essentially canceled that out anyway--which feels intentional. read more

If I could give them a zero review, I would 100%. I'm not sure how you can be a mechanic and mess up an alignment. Also, their guarantee on tires is just trash, they won't give you credit for tires used under their guarantee policy. They kept going in circles trying to go around their "policy". I've been going there for a while and dealing with the "issues". Quoted price is never what they say, you bring a coupon and you have to remind them when you are checking out, or they won't give it to you. There used to be a guy that worked there that was great. Whoever is there now doesn't check the schedule so even if you make an appt, it doesn't matter. You're still treated like a walk in Got tires replaced and they don't reset my tire pressure monitor so low tire came on while I was in Sonora. The last straw was I got my oil changed. Left my car, picked it up, discussed pricing and left. Noticed oil in my driveway so made an appt. Decided that maybe I should take it to the dealership so I could at least feel better about being overcharged. They showed me a picture of my oil cap wasn't screwed back in the last time I got my oil changed. That's it. I will not be going back. No charge for screwing in the oil cap all the way. Did use a coupon to get the oil changed and now I'm only going there. read more

I called on a Sunday for a brake inspection as I was hearing a cyclical squealing sound when I drove my 2019 4Runner. Pep boys was one of the only places open on a Sunday that could perform the work. I called ahead, they told me to drop it off whenever and they'd take a look. They were busy and had many appointments but to my surprise they had found the issue within 2 hours. Had to get my front rotors changed and new brake pads for under $400. The price was really fair, and Juan, who I worked with was kind, professional and answered all the questions I had. Love this place! I come from the Bay Area so wait times are much longer there. Every time I've came to this location my car is done by the time I get to the Mail to all around. They're fast and get the job done. Again, I'm comparing them to the Bay Area Pepboys so my review may be different from others. The staff have always been helpful and kind. Remember to always check their website for coupons!! My only issue was the surrounding area but with the Starbucks the area has improved slightly. Upon arriving, I was warmly greeted by John, who seemed friendly and approachable. However, my overall experience was a bit mixed. I explained that I had a 3:30 pm appointment for two items: a car inspection and a tire rotation, as indicated by the sticker I had just removed from my windshield, recommending rotation about 3,000 miles ago, along with a car inspection form to be completed. John's response was less than satisfactory. He questioned the necessity of the tire rotation but agreed to check. He took my car inspection form and requested my keys, instructing me to wait at the counter the whole time. As John completed the inspection form at the counter, I asked if he could also perform the tire rotation. To my surprise, he declined, suggesting it could wait until my next oil change. Despite my insistence, he refused to provide the service. Frustrated but not wanting to press the issue, I proceeded to thank him, pay for the car inspection, and stated I would just stop at Costco for the tire rotation. John then followed me outside. Instead of accepting my decision, he continued to explain why I didn't need a tire rotation. I calmly expressed that I was just not used to being declined a service altogether- I was taken aback that he was persisting in this conversation, as I visibly did not want to continue. He snapped back, stating that I would have to pay for it, to which I responded that I was willing to pay for the service. Unfortunately, he didn't understand that my peace of mind was worth the additional fee. At that point, he reluctantly agreed to service it, but by then, I was already in my car and pulling away. Ideally, he would have given his recommendation and allowed me to choose while at the counter. I will not be returning here; having an appointment was pointless. read more

My husband had his vehicle towed from Stockton to them and they said it was a transmission line which they charged him 400.00 to replace! The next day on his way home from work the exact same problem happened and they would not even help to reimburse him for the tow or the previously incorrectly diagnosed problem. Pep Boys in Modesto is awesome. I recently ordered tires from Tirerack.com and needed them to be installed. Pep Boys is tied into Tirerack system so you can select Pep Boys and make your appointment when you buy your tires online so it is very convenient. It is ~$25/tire to install which is also one of the cheapest of the installers on Tirerack. I got my tires installed on time and quickly (about an hour) and even did an oil change while I was there ($125 for my Mercedes which is cheap). But why I am giving them 5-stars and why I will go back to them is they fixed the flat in my spare tire for free! I just had to go buy the stem valve (from an Autozone nearby) which was leaking and they fixed for me for free. Thank you Pep Boys! Btw, for some reason Pep Boys isn't showing up as an installer on Amazon anymore (which is where I usually buy my tires) which is why I bought on Tirerack. Pep Boys says you can always just bring tires in from Amazon and they will install them for the same ~$25/tire price. read more

The store closed the end of 2021 so I had to call "corporate" and Johan and Eddy were really dry and useless they would not let me speak to their supervisor or any higher up. It was almost 6pm I got anxious because most tire places close by 6pm and I needed to get to work early the next day. I called pep boys quickly, they said they would be able to fix it for me. do NOT take your car here, for ANYTHING. They will attempt to SCAM you. Let me share my story. For 3 years in a row, I took my car here to have the oil changed. EVERYTIME I came, they would try to find some BS excuse for me to replace something in the car that doesn't need to be replaced. Instead of changing the oil in a timely manner, they took their time trying to find anything they could charge me with. Every time I would be told I needed this, or that etc. They would turn a 40$ Oil change into a 250$ bill. This last time I went was the final straw. The Technician, a younger guy, called me over into the work area as I was waiting for my car to have the oil changed. He said that the threads on the screw plug of my oil pan was shredded, that I would need to leave the car in the shop overnight and pay 350$ for a new oil pan. I said "What?!" I can't leave my damn car overnight, how am I suppose to get to work tomorrow morning????? The guy behind the counter offered to give me a ride home in his personal car. Right, like I'm going to get in a car with a total stranger. The Technician even had the nerve to say "Wherever you went to change your oil before, they shredded the threads on your screw for the oil pan." I was furious. I told him that for the last 3 years I ONLY went to pep boys. He was speechless, then proceeded to make up some more Bull crap about why I needed my pan changed. The Pep Boys Technician was the one who shredded my threads by using power tools carelessly. He then tried to cover his mistake by blaming it on someone else, at the same time attempting to charge me for HIS MISTAKE. That day, I told them to change the oil, plug the screw back in, and give me my damn car back. I swear, this establishment needs to go up in flames. I WILL NEVER TAKE MY CAR HERE AGAIN.
