Pepboys in Modesto off Mchenry is a joke and has incompetent workers, front desk mechanic clerk or mechanic manager idk who tf it was but had a beard and glasses, also is lucky he didn't get punched in the face for his attitude, tone and how he carries himself. He seems very confused when you try to talk about whats wrong with the car and specifying the mechanical parts that need to be adressed, not sure if he didnt pay attention in school (if he even has any formal training) or just was hired off the street, but honestly has no business with fixing vehicles because this dude had no idea what was going on. I'm usually the type to research on YELP for businesses. This time around I found this pep boys in Modesto! For me, I read a room pretty easily and with the other customer waiting in for assistance. It seems everyone was well taken care of! I approached the front desk with eye contact. The gentlemen politely gave me a signal that "he will be right with me" after patiently waiting, the individual assisted me with clear cut expectations! He understood my main goal! And that was to patch up one of my tires until I am able to purchase new tires. It seem pretty busy, but my car was done within the time expected! And this was about 3 months ago! I bought a couple of Tires from them a few months ago . Last week I noticed a little shake in the steering at highway speeds. So I rotated the front tires to the back and the shake seemed to move from the front to the back. So I thought Mabe I ran over something or maybe a wheel weight came off. So I took the tires back there to have them checked. Emil the service person took care of me right away and had the tires rebalanced. I offered to pay, and Emil said nonsense they stand behind their products and service, I was in and out of there in less than 20 minuets. My car needed new brake pads. I called for a quote over the phone and was quoted $250. If the truck "needs" new rotors it would be $600+! I watched a few videos on how it is done. Not much extra work is required for the rotor. And after pricing the parts out online I determined $600+ was just an unexplainable amount. So, I called back after scheduling an appointment for just brakes. I was now quoted $290!! I figured I'd have better luck with a manager the following morning or day of my appointment. Wrong!! I was told that since they are responsible they cannot just do brakes and the truck may still need work. I am on a limited income as I'm sure is everyone else. Without an overall price how can I allow somebody to work on my vehicle? What if it costs more to fix than I can afford? Especially since I know what is wrong with my vehicle and what it needs and what it doesn't. This is called upsale. My vehicle could have potentially become hostage in these guys hands. No thanks! I would not recommend this place at all. Bad service, terrible pricing and kind of a circus in the way the place is ran. Would not recommend!! I'd have rated 0/5 stars if possible! Save your money and go to a mom and pop shop. These businesses are an absolute joke and all they do is price gouge and mislead you. You'll never get a straight answer out of anyone! read more

Brought in my 2020 expedition for a front end alignment, gladly paid the $100 because I felt confident they do good work at pep boys... car drove great for a couple months then My wife started hearing popping noises from the left front when Shed go into driveways or roll over speed bumps. The problem continued for awhile until I drove it myself and realized something was bad. Im pretty mechanically inclined so figured it was strut related problem so I ordered some parts and a compression tool. I jacked it up removed the wheel to find my lower control arm so loose the nuts were finger tight. You could see on the cross member that the bolts were never tightened to spec and have been working back and forth. This is my wife's car she drives my children around in and it was probably a hundred miles away from a terrible accident. I will never go back, I'll never recommend anyone go here either and I have photos and plan on contacting corporate about this. Get your shit together. read more

This review is based solely on after the sale service. I've shopped here for two personal vehicles and four work fleet vehicles, the sales at times are really worth it and sometimes the oil change packages are worth it too. So back to the recent experience, I was experiencing a leak in a tire that was letting air out faster than I was comfortable with. I stopped by early around 10am hoping to get a check and repair. Usually tire shops take anywhere from 30-60 mins fixing a flat. I drive a lot for my work and an hour would set me back two or three hours. They quoted me at best 90 mins. I asked is there anything you can do because I really couldn't be out 90 mins plus in the middle of the day. They said no, that was the best estimate they can give. Usually larger tire shops have someone dedicated to flats, repairs and mounting. Not here, they only keep a skeleton crew and aren't reliable in a pinch. So what is the point of having a warranty if they aren't reasonably available to honor it? Flats and leaks never happen at an optimal time, rarely allowing scheduling for appointments. A flat puts the average person out, without a vehicle it's difficult to get around. So with all this in mind, I won't be returning with my personal vehicles and will move our fleet vehicles somewhere else. Time is money, if you don't have the time to help when warranted, then I have to find another business that will at least try. You can keep your sales and promotions, not worth it when it really matters. read more

Oh Cynthia, Cynthia, Cynthia, Cynthia. This store has a price difference problem. On two different occasions, on two different dates, the price on the shelf didn't reflect its true value at the register. This seems to be a bad habit here at Pep boys. When you point it out, or ask they honor the price on the display, it's met with attitude and combativeness. Walked in here on Halloween. It was pretty darn busy, understaffed, and just all out discombobulated to say the least. Second time I walk in here, and get to the register where it rings up a much higher price than the display reads. Cashier Cynthia gives major attitude ( because 10 people are in back of me and they are short staffed) as I ask her to honor what the display reads, for this happens to be the second time in less than a month that this is happening. She says she can't help me and I need to find a manager. I loose my place in line and "go find" a manager ( cuz it's not her problem obviously it's mine lol ) in order for me to get the true price. I find manager Jose ( I believe, I think , don't quote me on the name), I show him the obvious display price difference; he agrees to honor it. Instead of walking me back to the register to make sure Cynthia honors the price as well, he sends me to tell her on my own, ( still this is my problem not a store problem) and as I'm walking back, (mind you in front of a line of 10 people ) miss Cynthia shouts out as she rolls her eyes "DID HE REALLY HAVE TO GO AND DO THAT ?! God !!!!!!" A : Manager should have walked me back and checked me out himself, or at least walked me back to tell Cynthia himself. B: give Cynthia Halloween off if she's gonna be cranky. Came in here with my mom's tire which was off the rim and wouldn't hold air. They promptly found the issue as it was due to a broken valve stem. They fixed it with a new one and filled with air and can you believe it, no charge! Would highly recommend! read more

I was shopping around for tires, and found pep boys. Emil and Anthony helped me and they were amazing. They were professional and didn't try to high ball me. They gave me the price of the tires and the installation cost, which is rare as most tire places try to hide the price of service, making you think it's cheaper than it is. I brought my car in for recurrent flat tire due to a huge nail in it. They were pretty busy and had me wait an hour and a half to get my car back. I was visiting family and didn't have much time myself, so I didn't notice that they didn't actually repair the correct tire until the next morning. It would have been easier to just call me and be honest, asking what tire needed to be repaired (having forgotten to write it down), than to fictitiously repair a tire that didn't need to be repaired. They offered to repair the correct tire, but I would have to wait another hour on Easter Sunday. They unfortunately didn't have the valve extensions there but they told me where to get them and how to put them in. The customer service inside was great as well! Brought car in for service (oil change, tire rotation and slow leak in one tire) on Monday. When I picked up that afternoon I was told that it was all fixed. On way home noticed that still had leak and tire was in same place. They not only didn't fix tire they didn't even rotate them (even though they charged for it). I went back and was given some lame excuse that they couldn't find leak and no excuse about not rotating tires (they just added air, did they even change oil and filter?) When they pulled tire, leak was easily found. I was told that it was irreparable and that I needed a new tire. I left a message for the Shop Manager and I still have not heard anything from Pep-Boys. I gotta say... pep boys is the best. I'm a learning DIY mechanic and Jose and Bobbi in parts are absolutely incredible. I did a tune up in the morning with a purchase from Bobbi and she offered to provide the proper sparkplug gap measurements without being asked. This afternoon Jose confirm why I will ALWAYS come to Pep Boys first. I was at a loss with a project and had it narrowed down to 2 ideas. 1 was an expensive alternator fix another was a much simpler $5 part cleaning fix. Rather than just sell me the expensive part as I initially requested he showed me an awesome in-house "how to fix it" computer program with recommendations. He saved me the expensive part purchase and my truck is running great. Thanks for taking the time to care about your customer's problems! A couple of months ago my son took my Lincoln to get a battery. Prior to the purchase I asked if they could take their credit card over the phone. The man on the other end said yes. I proceeded to get the work done. I had also asked about the coupon saving prior to the work being done too. And was told that it would be added. After the work was done I was told they couldn't take their credit card over the phone. And they couldn't do the coupon. They also broke a piece that was attached to the battery cause more work to be done! If you care about your vehicle DO NOT let them work on it! This use to be a reliable and honest auto repair place, but the quality of service has definitely gone down over the years!! read more

I guess depending on who's working.. I went in today, 10/8/18. For a tire repair, (plug). Last time I went in there for same reason, about year ago, the service was great, in and out in bout 15-20 min.. But today.... I noticed the mechanic take my car in about 10 min after I got there, after approximately 10 mins I noticed the mechanic working on other customers vehicles. ( thinking I was ignored). So, 50 min later I went up to the guy working the desk there. I asked how much longer? He says, oh your done. I told him , you could've told me.. ( it wasn't even busy), Jeez I'd hate to go there on a busy day! He said he was going to tell me... one other customer had to go up and ask the same thing, he also was done.. Total inconvenience! its safe to say I sat there for 30-40 min unnecessarily.. If the employee working the desk could take 3 seconds to let the customers know that their vehicle is done, that would be nice! And he wasn't nice either, no sorry sir, no thank you, or thanks for coming in.. so I guess it depends on who's working.. The crew I dealt with last time.... wish they were working today! So if you take your vehicle in there to get serviced .. make sure you ask the guy there periodically, how much longer.. . Otherwise you might be sitting there much longer than necessary.. . I've been going here for years and just recently they got a new head person in there and twice now I've gotten a quote and came back and they raise the price on me. I went back because I've been a loyal customer to pep boys for so long hoping that this was just maybe a one or two time thing and I asked for a tire rotation and he didn't give me a rotation he actually said that I didn't need it although it's obvious that the tires in the front don't match and are older than the tires in the back which are brand new.this is very disappointing to me considering that I like to be consistent with my car care but I will be definitely going somewhere else from now on. Also my girlfriend brought her car here and they had to call us back because they sent her home with no air filter in the car. read more

Where do I begin? First of all, I called their parts department to see if they had any parking light bulbs for my 2010 Toyota Prius. At first, the moron didn't know what I was talking about when I said what I needed. He ended up saying yes after he did thorough research. I asked the guy if they can do installation, and he said yes and transferred me to the garage. The phone rang and rang, and then hung up on me. I called the guy back and told him what happened, his response was "I don't know what to tell you, sir". He transferred me again to the garage, and I was told that they could do installation. He told me it was going to be $20 in addition to the $15 for the bulbs, which I think is outrageously high to change one fucking lightbulb! Later today close to 5 PM, I came into the store and asked if they can change my lightbulb, but I was told they cannot take anymore walk-ins because they had all appointments all night, but they didn't look that busy and they don't close until 8 PM. He offered me an appointment, but this isn't something that I can wait on. I don't want to have to get pulled over because one of my lights is busted. Seriously, they can't take just a few minutes to change one fucking lightbulb?! In fact, I wonder how many of these idiots it takes to screw in a lightbulb, lol. read more

Amazing, honest service! I drive home from work late at night, and noticed that one of my headlights went out. The next day I went into Pep Boys before work (half asleep) and was quoted around $30. for the replacement bulb with installation. My truck is a pain, so I don't even attempt to do it myself. After I agreed to the quote, the gentleman that was helping me went outside to get started. As he went to remove the old bulb, he realized it had just gotten loose, and didn't actually go out. This guy could have easily continued with the replacement and took my $30. Instead he screwed the old one in and told me I was good to go. Pep Boys might not have gotten my $30. today, but they will get much more from me in the future the next time I need something done. Thank you! read more

My family lives in the neiborhood behind Pep Boys. Last year, there were five of us driving with five cars at our house, since our three kids are teens. My husband is a decent mechanic when he's not at his day job, so thankfully, he saves us a lot of money by doing a lot of repairs. Also happy that he's teaching my son some of the basics and my son is leaning toward becoming a mechanic. The selection in the shop is fine, the ladies who usually cashier when we visit are nice. The music, however, repels us!!!! Why is a store that should draw exactly our kind of business playing music in which the singer is screaming??? And who is dictating this play list anyway??? I scan this place for the staff every time because I cannot understand why something so simple and relevant is being ingored. I was noticing a lady around my age, a young lady(maybe college aged), I think one young man, and the rest are older men.....like in their 50's! I'm not into 80's music like most of my peers, but it doesn't compel me to travel to a business further away to purchase the same items. Pep Boys DOES! It was time for an oil change so I looked online for the best place to do it. I found a coupon for Pep Boys and decided to go there even though I live 20 minutes away and there are plenty of auto service companies closer to me. When I got there my husband showed them the coupon and the employee said we wouldn't be able to use it because it's only for a conventional oil change and our car needs synthetic oil (the more expensive oil change). The employee must have thought we were stupid. I double checked with my car manufacturer and the conventional oil change indeed would've been just fine. I took my truck in to get the starter changed and they charged me a outrageous price and they claimed to do a brake inspection,...but they did notput my brakes back correctly and should not let me out of the shop like that the brake caliper was loose and brsje pads on my truck they purposely over tighten my lug nuts and brake calipers ....sloopy job and got grease in my truck and on the carpets and seats I will never recommend anyone to them they got terrible mechanics and saftey issues....they need to be inspected by the state for not doing proper brake inspection and letting people out of the shop while not putting the brake's back correctly...and they need to start being professionals and start doing the job right for every customer regardless if they like them or not..their suppose to do proffessional job not a sloppy job.... read more

It took them two hours to change 2 tires. I made an appointment and pre ordered two tires. After 51 minutes they told me they couldn't find the right tires. I agree to another brand and then it still took them Another 40+ minutes for the vehicle to be ready. I would not recommend them to anyone and will never return wit such poor service. read more

I refer on average about 20 customers to have battery tested and replaced to this location a month.. today my customer needed a patch on her tire and she told me she wanted to go to pep boys to get it patched..I usually send my tire customers to another shop but she insisted to go through pep boys so I called to find out the price and make sure they can take care of her..Instead they tried to take advantage of a 52 year old woman by telling her she needed new tires even though she is on a fixed income..we took the tire to americas tire where they patched it in 15 minutes and assured us we did not need any new tires..you lost her business as well as mine..I will never refer another customer to your store again read more

The auto work at Pep Boys is fine. I was very concerned about the lack of customer service I received however. I made an appointment for an oil change on my truck at 7 pm. I drove by at 6 pm, and saw no customers, so I decided to stop and see if the shop was able to take me early. It took me about 6 minutes to find someone to help me. This man who greeted me said he could start my oil change and said he was going to go get his manager. The manager, Juan, came out a few minutes later, and had an attitude as soon as he saw me. We got the paperwork done, and he told me to wait. In about 10 minutes, Juan told me I was good to go, and told me the total bill. I asked why it was done so fast, and asked if the fluids, brakes, and tires were serviced also. He told me no, they don't have time to do all the services today. I was confused, because when I get an oil change on my vehicle, it is assumed that all the other services are performed also. He told me, in the evenings, they only have 2 employees working, so they can't do everything if they want to close on time. If it is the case that only certain services are offered after 5 pm, then that information should be disclosed to people upon making appointments. In the 20 minutes I was there, Juan also turned away 2 other customers for oil changes. "Hours of operation" should mean open for everything, not whatever you can get done so you can begin to clean and finish the rest of the evening tasks. read more

Made an APPOINTMENT to get my vehicle checked out (code read). Went down there early to be sure I'd make the counter well before appointment time and there's a line of people nearly out the door. Of course, there's one guy helping customers as I watch multiple employees (reps, not mechs) walk through and do nothing. I finally get to the counter and I'm told, "It's gonna be about 2hrs". 2hrs to wait for a code read which takes 30 seconds to pull. There seems to be a disturbing trend in appointment taking by businesses where it's treated as more of "a suggestion" rather than an appointment. The sad part is that this was my first time at Pep Boys (EVER) and was looking to find a new mechanic as I was new to the area at the time. You guys lost a multi-car account because of mismanagement and poor customer service. I'm going to Robinson Auto now and he does good work, on time, and courteously. read more

This is the second time I have been there. The first time my car was having trouble starting. I took it in and they replaced the battery. When I left the car had trouble starting again. I went back in. They looked at it and said it turned fine for them. I drove home on Orangeburg. As I stopped at the light on Coffee Road the car dies. Thankfully I was in front of Speedee. They checked it and found a faulty hose. They fixed it. I went into Pep Boys this morning because my engine light was on. It turned off when I got there so I had them check my brakes. The guy said they would also run the codes to see if anything came up. They called me up later and said I needed an oil change, recommended defogging of my lights, recommended the rear brake pads, and changing of my special order wheel control arms. I had just changed my oil last week! The sticker on window had the date and mileage! He said the mileage was wrong on sticker (not true, as I checked when I got back). I don't mind the lights and clean those myself. They didn't even check the engine light...which is why I went to them to begin with. I don't know much about this wheel control arm but it seemed pricey at $800. I just didn't get a good overall feeling from them and I will have someone else do the needed brake pads and double check the control arm. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

I took my car in here to get the headlights installed . And possibly fog light . They quoted me $260 just for the headlights that i provided to be installed which i thought was high but i was on a tight schedule and it was my day off and i was desperate to get them done . Well they call me 2 hrs later saying it would be $200 more to install the fog lights because there's no wiring for them . And new wiring has to be ran . Which i also provided all the parts . i was paying for their shitty labor . Well i get my car back . Not only was the wiring already there originally for the fog lights . my car headlights were crooked the wiring was messy my plastics were demolished and they threw away my original lights that i was going to restore . Factory $300 each . I called to try and make it right and he (Peter)got very argumentative and it was my fault . DO NOT GO THERE ! I'm out $500 and have to have a real mechanic fix it . Not to mention my. I hope more people write reviews to warn people to stay away from this corrupt ass place ! Managers name is Peter . Full of liars ! And cons ...
