Larry spoke with the Michelin people and took care of everything I would highly recommend pep boys in Hamden Ct the service was outstanding and they supply top of the line products. Do not use this Pep Boys location! Just look at the average rating of this place and you can see that it is half of any other Pep Boys location. My wife went to do an oil change. The guy there told her that the battery is dead. Not weak or toward the end of its life but dead! She told him she didn't have any problem with the battery until coming to the shop. He insisted that the car doesn't turn on!! My wife let me talk with the guy over the phone - he still insisted that the battery is dead. They replaced the battery (what choice did she have?) and I switched the car with my wife and drove back there. I asked to see the old battery and replaced the battery back to the original battery. Magic - it worked perfectly ok. The repair manager started to bs me, he brought the battery machine and told me that it broke down, that the guys had a miscommunication etc' etc'. Bottom line - systematic fraud. Update: the shop manager called me and compensated me for the lost time which was nice. However, this hasn't solved the systemic fraud issue. 9 out of 10 people just replace the battery. read more

They bascially made up the part because it does not exist, they probabily figured im a young girl and don't know anything about cars. Run away. While traveling home to MD, they refused us service on our tire unless we bought 4 tires, when 2 of ours were only a month old. The manager was belligerent. Figured since we were stranded and have a nice car, we had no choice. Orange location was willing to do it!!! Then when we walked back to pick up the car, they had driven it all the way around front on the flat tire and someone we hadn't seen gave us our keys without asking our name. If I hadn't been on the phone with corporate for an hour, and them trying to intercede, I'm sure they would have tried to charge a diagnostic fee. Wish this could be a negative rating. read more

I had a slow leak in my tire and I had called they told me to bring my car in for 1230pm and I would be in and out. 2pm comes along and my car still wasn't looked at. The service assistant manager was rude and when I asked how much longer he said he didn't know and I had advised him that he told me to bring my car at 1230 and I would be in and out. I took my keys and left. Town fair tire is 100 times better and town fairs service is so much better. Never using pep boys again. read more

I never thought I'd be giving a 5 star review for a Pep Boys store. It's amazing how one person and one good deed can really change your opinion of a place (not to mention, completely make your day!). I had some bulbs blow out on my Honda. Was in the parking lot of Pep Boys with a friend who was struggling to get into the headlight assembly (he's an Old School mechanic, so...good with a 76 Chevy, not so much with a 2004 Honda). An employee was on his way to his vehicle (clearly leaving work for the day) but stopped and asked if we needed help. Naturally my friend (and his ego) did NOT want to accept help. The guy (clearly knowing the Male Ego) very nicely asked my friend if he could take a look. He had the blown bulbs out in about 45 seconds, and then walked me into the store, picked up the bulbs I needed, and walked me to the cashier. He even went so far as to introduce me to the manager, and told HIM to help me if we had any trouble. Almost a surreal experience in this day and age. Jason, I cannot thank you enough. My tail light went out. No big deal, but when I called another place, they wanted me to make an appointment, get an estimate by an assesor, then order the part,then have me come back later. Say what? I called Pep Boys and they could see me right then, and Gabriel installed the light bulb in less than 20 minutes TOTAL. So much easier- and it only cost me $18. I've never used them for anything else (other than the store which is well-stocked of course) , but this was a great experience. read more

This is the worst place, over hour for basic oil change. Counter person had to get the oil filter (crazy). After waiting for over an hour was told the computers were down. Now late for an appointment was told to walk to an ATM so we could pay in cash, told them we can pay tomorrow than was told we could not take car they would call the police and charge us with robbery. It is now close to two hours computers still down, ready to call 911 and report a hostage situation. Now they can't print a receipt have to drive back tomorrow and hope they can print a receipt, a three hour oil change for $92. During all this the manager is yelling at us the computer problem is not his, problem he only works there. read more

They always are so helpful, when they don't have parts I need they can get them next day. Service department is amazing. Fast service, and knowledgeable guys behind the desk. Prices are competitive which is obviously important and the rebates usually make them Way cheaper then the other guys on the street. I went there to make oil change, I asked them to put castrol oil, after they changed it I found on my receipt they put pennzoil. Also there is a one guy tried to sell new tires to me even though the tires I have are not bold.long story short I thought I can work with them through out my school years but there charging me a lot and I don't trust their pricing. i dont have a pepboys near home, so this is the closest one and i do come here pretty often because sometimes autozone or advanced doesnt have a part or some car oriented thing i need. big parking lot. staff is friendly and has been helpful in the past when i needed assistance. i think once i got tires here and they broke my wheels center cap, wouldn't have been a big deal if i could buy a new center cap but i havent been able to find a new one :( big section of car wash/detailing stuff. read more

I feel disappointed that due to the nature of this website's rating options, I am forced to give this shit hole of an establishment one undeserved star. Me, my friend, and our two children were on my way to Massachusetts from PA when my windshield wiper broke which was problematic because it was intermittently snowing and raining. I was advised to stop here by the kind worker at AutoZone. Upon arriving at 11:15am, I was advised that after I dropped off my car, I would receive a call within the hour to let me know what the problem was so it could be fixed. We walked around the shopping center with our children to kill time in the frigid temperatures for over 3 hours before we were made aware of what the issue was. Then they proceeded to try to charge me almost $700 dollars to fix the broken wiper motor, which is an astronomical rip off. I had my father call them and coincidentally once they heard a man's voice on the phone, they lowered the price down to around $480. We ended up not getting our car fixed there just off of the principle that they are dishonest people that are trying to take advantage of a few women with children in a desperate situation but we still had to pay $160 for diagnostics, which I thought at the time was fair until I got my car back and apparently it was beeping on its own? which they tried to say was happening when I dropped it off. I drove that car 4 hours that day before I showed up there and never once did it beep on its own. So after going back and forth arguing about the car horn beeping on its own, they had someone come out and pull a fuse to stop the beeping and GUESS WHAT? after they pulled the fuse (which would stop the horn from working all together which at that point I was okay with just to get out of there and get it fixed somewhere else) MY CAR WAS STILL BLOWING THE HORN ON ITS OWN. To this day, I still have no idea which fuse they pulled. So I had to go back, wait more and argue again to get them to come pull the right fuse. I didn't leave until almost 5pm and still had 2 hours left to drive. I wasted my whole day here, had they said from the beginning it would take this long, I would have went elsewhere. Since there wasn't rain in the forecast for the rest of the day, I just decided to drive the rest of the way and get it fixed when I got to my destination because I had family waiting on me there since we were supposed to be there by 2. I was about 40 minutes down the road when I realized that my heat wouldn't turn on. I went to get my windshield wipers fixed and spent all day and $160 to end up with a broken horn, a broken heater, crying grumpy children, a headache, and missing the whole first day of my vacation which forced us to miss out on things we had planned trying to cram everything in the next few days. To say that these people were incompetent and unprofessional is a gross understatement. Next time I want to pay $160 for a headache, I would rather just pay someone to punch me in the face. read more

Came here today because the tire pressure on one of my tires kept going down even after filling it with air. I always get nervous going places like this because I'm a young girl who has a very limited knowledge of anything to do with cars so I always get afraid that the employees will take advantage of my naivety but in this case that couldn't be further from the truth! Larry was great and actually quite the opposite of what I was expecting when I walked in! He promptly took my car back to get checked out and turns out I had a screw stuck in my tire causing a slow leak. He actually gave me a discount because at one point he came up behind me to tell me something about '6 car and scared the crap out of me! He felt so bad he took $10 off the bill (which was already a lot cheaper than I was expecting to spend anyway!) I'll definitely be bringing my car back here if I have any other problems! read more

After reading other reviews, I reluctantly booked an appointment here to have 4 new tires installed. No alignment, just a tire install. I booked an 11am appointment and arrived on time the following day. Immediately, I was told that there were many people ahead of me and it would take 3hrs for the tire install. The staff wasn't forgiving in any way and instead went on to tell me how he worked until 11pm the previous day. If the appointment system is flawed, that isn't something I want presented as an excuse. Anyway, we walked around for 3 hours and upon return my truck was still sitting outside waiting for service. After some paper shuffling we were told it would now be 5 hours for the install. We asked to speak to the manager, but he was actually sitting right there listening. Same excuse from him. We are busy and have a lot of appointments. No apology. Guys, an appointment is a scheduled slot of time. 5 hours for tires? Lost an entire Saturday. Oh, and we are still waiting, so fingers crossed on the 5 hours. read more

Larry O., John M. just saved my life, my sanity and a fair chunk of money for me. I took my car to Pep Boys after not feeling safe to drive it to the dealer in Milford to have the brakes looked at. They were BAD. To the point that one of the calipers was rusted SHUT. I also needed my catalytic converters and O2 sensors replaced. Between the two jobs, my dealer probably would have cost me almost what I paid for the car. Larry was nice enough to make some suggestions that saved me SERIOUS money on the emissions job and John worked his tail off to make sure I wasn't sitting there all day while he did the installation. Between the two jobs, I spent less than the emissions work would have cost me at the dealer. Thanks guys! Now all you need is a Keurig for customers who have to wait for the work to be done. I had a bad experience here when I had a front flat and needed a new tire. They insisted I get 4 but I don't have an SVU and my tires were fairly new. I told them I'd get 2 front but they insisted all 4 or nothing. I have a Kia front wheel car and have never had this problem. I left without the tire and went to Orange Pep Boys since they were the only ones open on Sunday. They said it was fine, they'd fix it and when I told them what I was told they just apologized. What should have been a couple of hours tops, took the whole day but I'm glad that they had the honesty to admit it. In the past, I used them twice, I knew they were higher than some but convenience was a factor, and once they tried to strongly sell me more services, but this was enough to make me never go back. read more

I went to Pep Boys to get my tire checked out. The actual service on my tire and car was excellent, they were able to find out what was wrong with my tire, and put my spare on my car for me. However, I was highly displeased with the customer service from Larry. I am a woman who went in with my boyfriend, and Larry treated me as if I were naive and took advantage of it. He asked my boyfriend all the questions even though it was MY car, and made many assumptions towards me that seemed very sexist. When he did speak to me, he used a condescending tone and laughed at me. Even my boyfriend noticed and was displeased with how I was treated. I will not be going back to a place with workers that treat women with such disrespect. read more

First things first, this location and staff are hands down the best service I've ever received in my entire life. My car had died on the road and needed to be towed so we could get my serpentine belt changed. I got here and was helped immediately by Omi who made sure to communicate exactly what was wrong with my vehicle and what the next steps had to be. After the belt was changed it was seen that there also was an issue with my air compressor. Omi and the manager Bert did everything in their power to make sure that I left the next day with my vehicle up and running, all while giving me exceptional service and lightening the mood on a rather upsetting situation. I come from a management background and I can say that these guys here should be your go to no matter what car issues you might be having. Here they will take care of you and make sure you leave 100% happier than when you originally came in. From now on I will only be going to this Pep Boys location. Although I don't usually write reviews, I feel like such a review is warranted based on my recent experiences with Pep Boys in Hamden, CT. Particularly my experiences with Larry Ouellette. Ever since I came to Larry a few years ago due to an issue I was having with my tires, I knew based upon his services to me that day that I could trust him with any other issues that may arise with my vehicle. Fast-forward a few years later, I still have the same car but this time I have different issues: a broken axle and a loose axle. Larry explained to me the dangers associated with driving a car with a broken axle and gave me a very comprehensive explanation of how an axle functions, as well as the processes associated with the repairs. Initially, I was very reluctant to proceed with the repairs due to them being so costly and out of my budget. But Larry assured me that I would be getting a beneficial deal, one that includes a lifetime warranty, and even encouraged me to seek a second opinion if necessary. After a few days of receiving numerous second opinions and finding the money to pay for the repairs, I realized I would inevitably return to Larry. Right now, I am waiting for my car to be repaired but I feel rest-assured that my car is in good hands and being repaired at a fair price compared to other options. It is very satisfying to know that thanks to Larry's honesty and professional candor, I can continue to rely on him at the Pep Boys in Hamden for any and all of my future vehicle needs. While others might have had bad experiences here, my experience was great. My car stopped running due to a bad cable jumping, and I had it towed to Pep Boys on Sunday, which was the only shop open til 6pm on Sunday. I had to leave it there overnight to get the part I needed. When I returned, they installed the part in 10 minutes. I was afraid they'd charge me $100's of dollars to install the ACG/Main Fuse, but it was only $32, which is even cheaper than some other reputable auto repair shops in the area. I called ahead for a 1:30 appointment to swap out normal tires for snow tires (2). I bought the tires here last winter, so for just the labor I was quoted $14.99/tire. When I arrived, it took over five minutes to be acknowledged by someone. When I was, they immediately told me it would be $25/tire and when I mentioned I was told $14.99/tire on the phone I was immediately questioned, "who told you that." In the end, it seems $14.99 was the right price but they immediately tried to up-sell me, so be aware of that. They took my car keys and said they would call. It has now been over 2 hours, and despite the fact that I had an appointment, my car is not finished. In that time, they have already tried to up-sell me again by claiming I needed more maintenance. They seem aggressive, sneaky, and slimy. I would stay away and find someplace that isn't going to leave you feeling cranky and taken advantage of by the time you make it out the door. read more

Truly a bad experience in all, starting Monday on line looking for tires for my son's car. Went to Hamden just to stop in and look at what they had. Found a set and was helped by Larry who priced them out and said that he will hold them for me, price seemed high but I just started looking. I went on line and found the same tires for less on their website? So i set it up with an appointment for 5pm that night. I didn't choose the front end alignment in my order believing that it didn't need one. At 5pm when we are going over the order Larry is insisting that i get the alignment, so i ask if i will get a before and after printout and was told that I would. 2 and 1/2 hours later the car is ready and Jon is checking me out. Jon states we have no print out because printer is down and no Larry in site, he has left for the night. Jon wants nothing to do with it, he says I need to come back and speak with Larry. So i do on Wednesday and Larry said all he can do for me is have me come back with the car and he will get an after printout, he states he will get me in and right out when I come back. I come back on Thursday and he takes the car keys and said someone was finishing up an oil change and will get right on it. An hour later the mechanic comes and gets me to show me how bad the cars alignment is. WTF I'm thinking it was done Monday by them. I just say ok and let him work on it. When it's all said and done the first guy messed up our car and send us off in it. In the end this took 2hrs on top of the 2 1/2 hours the first time, so i ask Larry what can he do for me? He really didn't have a good answer for this whole mess up, and offered a free oil change to compensate me for 5 1/2 hours of time and the fact that the first guy who did my alignment sent me off with a bad job that would have wreck my new tires. read more

Do not go here. I had a hole in my exhaust and they told me I shouldn't leave without fixing it there. They lied and told me the car would EXPLODE if I drove it on the highway. I drove it to New York and back to New Hampshire where I live and got it fixed there. Do yourself a favor and go to town fair tire just across the street. I only went to pep boys because I was able to make an "appointment" online for 10am. I explained to Larry that my car felt shaky and thought I needed a wheel alignment. He didn't come out and inspect my car; simply took my keys and said he would call when it's ready. After an hour I saw my car was still parked where I left it and went in to ask for time estimate. Larry told me my car was in the bay being serviced and should be long. I went back outside and saw someone racing to my car to take in the service bay. Another 30 minutes went by before I was called to the desk just to be told they couldn't do the wheel alignment because my 2 front tires were too worn down and that I would not be charged. I complained about the time I was waiting JUST to be told they couldn't fix my problem. He then claimed they would go ahead and rotate tires and do alignment for free. 20 minutes later I was given my keys back with the only attempt of giving good customer service was that I would not be charged. I wasn't charged because they didn't do anything; the bald tires were still in the front and car wobbly as before. There was no attempt to communicate a solution to my problem; only long waiting time and excuses. Plus at one point I asked for my keys to put something in my car, and I was randomly given someone else's Jeep key. Not impressed! I immediately went to town fair tire. Without explaining what had just transpired, I informed the employee what my car trouble was. He took me outside to inspect the tires in front of me. He explained I needed the tires replaced and not just an alignment for this issue. Bottom line, the customer service was better- and without an "appointment " I had my car back with the problem fixed in just under 90 minutes. read more

Always skeptical when going to Pep Boys. But with a 30% coupon for 4 tires and doing my research, they had the best deal. Coupon requires you to make an appointment online, so I did. Showed up on time and 60 minutes later still waiting for my car to be brought in. I was told it would take 2 1/2 -3 hours for installation and an alignment. Unbelievable, sales associate must think I'm stupid. 3 hours to change 4 tires with an alignment should only take 1 1/2 hours tops. Problem Pep Boys doesn't put appointments first. Wish there were a "no star" option. I took my car here several times upon first moving to the area. Each time I brought it in, they kept finding more and more things wrong with the car, but then were substantially sub-par work in repairs. They replaced a front hub assembly but the car shook worse after their work than before. I brought the car back two more times, each with the assurance it had been fixed. It had not. I finally smartened up and took it to Todd at Tech Auto (fantastic!!!) and not only had they put in a very cheap part, but they had actually installed it incorrectly. I showed up 15 minutes before they closed, hoping to get a battery for my Chevy Cobalt. I was told they just sold the last battery that would work in my car. My battery was dead. I had gotten a jump start just to get there! I thought I was going to be stranded and would have to call AAA to get another jump just to get back home. Frank stepped up, did some digging and found a battery that would fit and work in my car. He was so helpful and installed the battery for me, after 9pm in the freezing cold! He went way above and beyond!! I will definitely be going back next time I need anything for my car! read more

If possible, do not even set foot in this place. Their time estimates are BS, and their mechanics are completely incompetent. I brought my car in because its engine was overheating, and some three and a half hours later (I'd been told that it would be no more than ninety minutes) I was told that the engine was not, in fact, overheating. I went out to check on it and the exact same dashboard indicators (check engine light, elevated engine temperature) were on as before. I guess the multiple workplace safety violations and MACHETE ATTACK a Google search turns up should have been red flags. I am taking the time to write this to try to ensure that my wasted afternoon at Pep Boys will not go for naught, and that if nothing else some people will not make the same mistake I did in the future. Felipe, Matt and Larry were incredibly helpful and it helped that every single one of these amazing individuals had a great sense of humor, explained every thing thoroughly and helped us make the best decisions we could make. It makes dealing with the car troubles much easier for certain when you have such a professional team. I haven't yet seen a store with bad ratings that didn't deserve it but this store definitely doesn't deserve it's horrible ratings.
