On one of the coldest, most miserable mornings, I found myself dealing with a completely flat tire--never a great way to start the day, especially in freezing weather. From the very first moment, Larry went above and beyond in a way that truly stood out. Before I had even arrived at the shop, Larry took the time to speak with me over the phone, immediately understanding the situation and showing genuine concern. That alone made a stressful morning feel a little more manageable. When I finally arrived by tow truck, I was blown away to discover that Larry already had all of my paperwork prepared and ready to go. Had a 9:00 am appointment for a oil change they took the car right in however it took them 1 1/2 hours to do it. I looked in the garage and the technician was just leaning on the column on his phone. I said something about it and they went out to the garage and came back told me they were " wrapping it up now" . If you have nothing to do on a Saturday I guess this place is for you. Had the absolute WORST experience here with Len. I came in on a Saturday at 11:45 for a simple oil change. He said he'd have me out within the hour. I return at 12:55 to find that my car has not even had a tech assigned yet to it, and it took him 5 minutes to FIND the keys to MY car. Also had tor audacity to charge over $100 for this "service". Absolutely unprofessional and horribly run business location. I wouldn't go here if my car broke down in the parking lot and I didn't have AAA. Whole oil change ended up taking 3 hours. They ordered the wrong part when I originally arrived, and said they can get inventory while it's snowing, in CT! And it was light snow and started while we were there. Do not go here. read more

I was told on the phone that a battery replacement/whole process would take an hour TOPS, I sat in the non-accommodating "waiting room" for over 4 hours. Just to tell me that I NEED two batteries and completely overcharged me for "service fees". Absolute joke, don't recommend this place to anyone. read more

Just had a great experience at PB! My low tire pressure alert came on and I came to PB. I didn't see the sign outside like years past and went inside. Very friendly woman at the desk told me to go to Bay 2. Awesome employee came out to check my tires. When my alert didn't go out, he took the time to fix it! Much appreciated!! read more

I got a flat coming from NYC on the highway in Hamden, CT on the way to picking up my kids from college in Boston. The tow truck took me to Pep Boys and Larry told me that I needed all four tires replaced (not just the 2 tires that were flat and damaged) bc i have a 4 wheel drive vehicle. I called Mercedes Benz bc the rim was damaged and when I told them about needing to get all the tires replaced bc it was all wheel drive they said that was not true. When I told this to Larry, he got the manager Cassie to talk to me and she aggressively told me that Mercedes was LYING- her words. And that if I only replaced the tires that needed to be replaced and not all four I would need to sign all paperwork, waiving them of any transmission, etc. issues that I might experience because all tires were not replaced. After already having been through a traumatic event (the flat happened on the highway) and not knowing if Cassie and Larry were telling me the truth or not, I ended up approving getting all four tires replaced because i had a long drive ahead of me and i was now nervous about any other mishaps. After waiting over FIVE HOURS to get the tires delivered from their warehouse and installed they told me that the back tire rims were wider than the front rims and that the new back tires would not fit on the rims! I lost the entire business day at Pep Boys and their incompetence. I had to call Mercedes Benz roadside assistance (which I should have done in the first place) to take the SUV to the dealership nearby so that they could replace the tires in the morning when they open. In the meantime I took the train back to NYC. College pickup will have to wait until tomorrow now. Pep Boys were the WORST. I totally didn't trust them to even put the old tires back on properly to be towed. I can't believe that a national chain would allow people like this to work in their establishment when so many honest, good competent people are looking for jobs. read more

Deceptive pricing on tires. Deceptive pricing on other services as well. I decided to give them a shot even though they are half an hour from me. Dropped off my car for brakes and tires. A few hours later I got a reprt texted to me that wasn't understandable so I called. Was put on hold for 15 minutes before I hung up. I tried again an hour later and was told, Larry is right next to me give me a second. That time I only waited 11 minutes before I hung up. Finally they called me. I was given their thoughts on my brakes and wanted me to hold again while they priced it out. I said no thanks what time will my new tires be installed so I can pick my car up? " New tires? You wanted tires?" Haha... waste of a day. I finally picked up my car that night. Cost me $538 for 2 tires and an alignment. The price was advertised as buy 3 get one free so I wanted 4 tires but was told i only needed 2 and the price they gave me for 4 tires didn't represent what was advertised. Never trust PepBoys of Hamden to even look at your car. Larry told me I needed new brakes and rotors when they were both brand new. I can't believe the blatant lies that came from the mechanics here. I came in with my new Subaru because the brakes were squeeking slightly. I brought my car in and Larry said it was the break pads that were completely gone, and the rotors needed to be replaced for $300+ for the rear axel. Being a newer car, I was completely taken back and thankfully got a second opinion at Firestone. Firestone said the breaks were barely worn, and the squeeking was because the car had probably been on the lot for a little and just needed to be used and that the rotors and breaks were in perfect condition. Ive never considered reporting a company for how they conduct buisness. But this company is purely criminal trying to scam customers. I say take your car directly across the street to Firestone if you have to. But literally anywhere else would serve you more honestly than Larry at PepBoys. Shame on this buisness. read more

I scheduled an appointment for an oil change over the phone with Larry today for 5:00pm. When I arrived, a lady named Shannon told me that I did not have an appointment. She asked Larry if he remembered speaking with me, and he told her that he did and that he just didn't enter the appointment in the computer. I left Pep Boys at 7:30pm tonight because they treated me like a low priority walk-in. It took them two and a half hours to change my oil. Shannon was nice enough to give me a 25% off coupon, but I will never give Pep Boys my business again. I'd give them zero stars if I could. read more

Miraculously, all the staff from April 2, 2024, has been reassigned or replaced by management. Just received an oil change at PEP Boys on 4/2, back for another oil change on 05/06 as a result of instacarting. The manager reports the screw on the car is wrong and that the last person to perform oil change caused this problem. Shows manager receipt that PEP Boys in Hamden is the last person to complete oil change. He reports its the person before, my question is why you did not catch this error a month ago. Magic, I have new staff. MODERN DAY ROBBERY. I believe they put the wrong screw in cause why would this magic screw just appear and strip the oil pan thread, why wasn't this an issue before. I made an appointment online in advance for an oil change, tire rotation, and new wipers, and then drove 30 minutes to Pep Boys only to be told that they're actually too backed up with work and my appointment would not be honored. The service rep told me that the "online appointment system doesn't know that they're backed up" and to "always call for an appointment." Brought my 08 Rogue in for a replacement headlight bulb. Yes, car is old enough to get just a bulb replacement. Was quoted $45 out the door with them even replacing it for me. Bait and switched to a $200+ bill bc my car has HID bulbs which they sell for over $150. Found a place online that sells the same bulb for $45. (Originally 145, so they're not so far off on the normal retail price). Don't quote if you're underquoting by more than 75%. read more

A complete scam with terrible service. I brought my truck in on Saturday because my check engine light was on and my truck was jerking as it shifted gears. I got a call later that day to tell me that a rodent had eaten my wiring and that the harness needed to be replaced but it was too late to order the part. They said they were getting the part from the dealership Monday and have it fixed Monday morning. They asked my permission to take my truck apart on Saturday so that they could check for further damage and be ready to install the part Monday morning and I gave permission. They said that as long as there wasn't any additional damage found my total would be $889 and that they would contact me Monday morning with an update. I hadn't heard from them and gave them a call at about 2:00 on Monday. They said that my technician was out on a test drive with another customer and would call me back in about 15 minutes. At 4:00, I hadn't received a call and decided to call them. At that point I was informed that they hadn't began working on my truck and that it would be done late that Monday night or early Tuesday morning. I didn't hear from them Monday night and so I gave them a call Tuesday at 9:30AM to be informed that my technician had called out on Monday and that they were still waiting on the part. At 4:00 I got a call telling me that they had just gotten my truck taken apart, found out that the wiring harness was chewed by rodents, and just ordered the part (I was told this on Saturday!). Then I was told that it would be Wednesday at 11 before my truck was done. At this point I was very rude explaining the whole ordeal and complete lack of competency and communication show by the garage (Scott handled this very well). This got the technician to feel bad and stay late to finish my truck and I was able to pick it up around 7:30 that night (which I am thankful for). However I was charged $238 more than what I was quoted for the exact work that was done since no additional damage was found after being told that they were would find some discounts for the inconvenience. Went over to Town Fair tire and they charged me $466 for everything!! All four tires plus alignment and everything plus.. Peps Boys is a rip off and only work on commission. DO NOT COME HERE FOR ANYTHING! Where to begin with this nightmare? I made an appointment a week ago to get my tires replaced. I ordered the specific tires online and received a confirmation. So why is it that after 2 hours of waiting I'm told they don't have my tires in stock. Apparently they sold out 2 days ago. At no point in the last 2 days did anyone call to tell me this (though in my opinion if you're placing an order online, aren't you assuming they've been set aside for you?). And Larry, who checked me in, apparently didn't bother to check to make sure they were in stock. During the 2 hours I waited I witnessed an employee asking everyone what they came in for. Why? Shouldn't jobs get done in the order of appointments and walk-ins accordingly? Apparently not. Did I also mention that the quote you recieve confirmation of online isn't necessarily the cost savings youre going to pay in the store. Sure it might only be $30 extra, but do confirmation emails mean anything anymore? Not at PepBoys! They don't have to quote the right price or even have the product you ordered in stock. While I was ready to walk at the 2 hour mark, I was convinced to go with a different tire, that was comparable, and offered free installation to at least match my original order. Ok. That was nice. HOWEVER, wouldn't you now prioritize me since I've already been waiting for 2 hours? Nope! People who came in after me, WITHOUT an appointment (confirmed through conversations) came and left before me. The lights in the waiting room got turned out, as I sat in darkness (it got switched back on when they realized i was still sitting there). In total I waited 4.25 hours to get my car back. I was the very last one. I get it, labor can sometimes be hard to come by. But that shouldn't be an excuse for the ill treatment and long waits. When finally checking out I calmly mentioned that it would have been nice to have been prioritized considering they screwed up and I was told that not only are they short staffed but that the guy working on my car was also multi tasking on 2 other cars and since their jobs were easier they got the priority. How do you like that? If I could give this place zero stars I would. Absolutely disgusting. Not only would I never come back to the Hamden branch, I would never risk going to any other PepBoys again. I called Pep Boys and made a reservation to have an oil change, my tires rotated, and my car emissions inspection. The man on the phone said I was all set for 11:30. When I arrived on time I was told by the the clerk that Pep Boys didn't do emissions inspection anymore. Great. Then I was told my tire rotation and oil change would take 45 minutes to an hour, so I walked over to Stop and Shop to get some groceries. When I returned almost an hour later, they were just taking my car into the garage to do the work. When I asked about that, the same guy said, "Oh well...we're backed up," shrugging his shoulders. He could not have cared less. My inquiry was just an annoyance to him. I then had to sit in the waiting room, but what I should've done is taken my car back and gone elsewhere. Do not go here!! They totally took advantage of my 22 year old son. He had a flat tire and they led him to believe that he needed to change all 4 tires which was a complete lie. When we called to speak to someone about this we were told that a manager would be available in the morning. The next morning we called and 2 days after that and Larry (who my son dealt with) would not return our calls. I did call customer service and relayed my entire story. Supposedly, this is under investigation but we are still out $780. Ridiculous!! They should be ashamed!! Would not recommend going here at all. I waited almost 2 hours for an oil change. The reception was terrible as everyone was scurrying around. When my oil change was finished I was told it was outside but I could not find my car due to the excessive amount of other cars parked at the front door. They also charge a ridiculous amount of extra fees. $20 in addition to the oil change, well over what I've ever paid anywhere else. Firstly, to start, pep boys removed my review from google. So here I am. I went there, a college student, and a female, with a tire already ordered online. I paid online and get there and was helped by a miserable lady named Sara. Not only was she rude the whole time, but was willing to stand there and fight with me after she told me my service would be $30, come back to $102. Very inaccurate on information, called to place to talk to a manager and she REFUSED to put a manager on. She is rude, unprofessional, and I will never return to a pep boys location after this. She needs to be fired, and shame on the owner for deleting a review instead of reaching out to apologize for the horrendous customer service. read more

Absolutely horrible go in for brake change and oil change and to get a sensor changed they do a diagnostic test to make sure it's the rite one and they end up changing the wrong one and give me my car back and then drives maybe 10 minutes before the engine light came back on and then it wouldn't start they do end up figuring out what was wrong but after keeping the car all day and i had to call to find out what happened .then go look at my bill they charging 1600 for an 1100 Job easy then come to find out it's cause they charging u double the hours they should for a full brake change is an hour and half at the most they charged me that 4 times and then charged me separately for each thing done making it seem like they legit did one at a time NEVER GO TO PEP BOYS THE BIGGEST SCAM ARTISTS EVER read more
