Our insurance company suggested the car be towed to Pep Boys in Elgin and I was SO skeptical, but also it was a Saturday night at 10pm and I saw Pep Boys were open on Sunday with a 9am open appointment (which we took) These mechanics were amazing!! Two new tires, ball joints, sway bars, suspension, and alignment DONE in 5 hours on a SUNDAY for $890!! The price was fair, the service was awesome and Tony literally called 6 times in 5 hours to check in and make sure everything was approved and took the time to explain in laymen's terms what was happening! read more

So I applied for pep boys synchrony credit card. After approval I purchased tires. The deal was a rebate of 50-100 dollars. I'm not sure what kind of shady business practices they are up too but still haven't received my rebate. Spoke with someone at the store and I'm being told my rebate no longer available. Please do your research before making large purchases. I will no longer be spending my hard earned money at this establishment and I caution others to do the same. read more

Be careful when dealing with Dustin at this location! Took my wife's car in for service and to address an issue with the front left wheel. My wife was hearing some kind of noise! Not only did Dustin try to sell me four new tires and an alignment that I don't need but he told me that my wife's car was fine and it was safe for her to drive. Thanksgiving day while driving to Wisconsin, we encountered major issues with the front left wheel. We had one lug nut stud break off and we lost 2 lug nuts on the highway doing nearly 75mph, nearly causing us to get into an accident! Needless to say we had to call AAA to come out. Really disappointed with Dustin! Reached out to Pep boys and haven't heard back from their corporate office! Unacceptable! read more

Brought our Honda in for brake service (some kind of rubbing noise). They called back promptly with their assessment and recommendations. We went ahead with the service as the quote was reasonable and very competitive. We were very impressed with the work done and especially the customer service starting at drop off to pick up. There were some mail in discounts at check out that were available also, but they took those $$ off the bill so we wouldn't have to hassle with the mail in portion. Came here because my dad had purchased lifetime alignment on my vehicle and I needed another alignment. However he had purchased this at the Palatine location. We called this place asked if we could get it done here anyway since its nearby us, they said yes. We made an appointment and came in. Together we called the Palatine location to verify our lifetime purchase, they said we only had bought a 3 year alignment. My dad was not happy. We did not want to fight it so we left. When we returned to pick up our vehicle, the staff here had told us that they researched further and found out that we did indeed have lifetime alignment. Me and my father were very happy that the staff here took the time and effort to discover this and told us to save the receipt as proof for future reference. Luis, the manager is why I never hesitate to bring any of my vehicles here for tires and/or any maintenance issue. I walk in, and it doesn't matter if I was there two months ago, or nearly a year ago, Luis greats me by name, and remembers the tires on my vehicles. The guys who work in the shop or as honest as any mechanic can be, because let's face it, until something is taken apart and thoroughly investigated, it's all speculation, and that goes for any mechanic. I have yet to be lead wrong. When they find an issue, they make every attempt to make sure you understand the problem, and even try and show you the proof. They offer a very detailed description of what is necessary and they have saved me a lot of money, at their own loss of business in many instances, by being truthful and telling me when I can handle something on my own, to save some money. I have yet to have a less than positive experience at this location, and recommend these guys to anyone ever looking for a tire shop. read more

Made a reservation online yesterday for oil change for Sat a.m.. Had a few errands to run that a.m. and was a few minutes later than expected, so I called Luis at the service desk. I said I was running late and wanted to know how long everything would take- oil change/tire rotation. He said 30-45 min. I had to make a choice whether to keep this appointment or reschedule. I wasn't sure if I'd make my next errand on time, so I said "I only have 40 min. total (5 to get there, and 35 for service)." Then Luis said "Don't worry, we'll take care of you." So I went, and boy was I impressed. Not only were they done in less than 1/2 hour, service top to bottom was exceptional and professional. Luis kept his word for Pep Boys and they exceeded customer satisfaction. I wanted to keep my word too. There you go- well done and thank you! A breath of fresh air in the often frustrating car service industry. Service was outstanding. Clean washroom, showroom, waiting areas. I recently stopped by for an estimate on a power steering problem I had with my car. I was quoted a price in the excess of $2000.00 for a new rack and pinion, high pressure hose, and maybe a new power steering pump. This price seemed a little too high for me so I got a second opinion from a garage mechanic and I ended up paying $600.00 for a new rack and pinion parts and labor included. There was nothing actually wrong with any of the other components even though pepboys was insisting there was. I had the work done almost a month ago and everything is running fine. I will never go to pepboys again for repairs. You are much better off finding a local reelable and competent mechanic. read more

I went to this Pep Boys in the fall of 2014 on an emergency basis because I needed new tires for a road trip the following morning - as I apparently severely damaged mine due to horrific street conditions nearby. I walked into the place, was greeted by the desk manager (Luis), and explained my situation. Although it was later in the day and close to closing time, he went out of his way to work with the staff to help get my car done before close of business, and my trip the following day was a success. Today, I went back to the same Pep-Boys with a tire balancing issue. Luis still happens to be the desk manager there and, as always, he was top-notch with his customer service. He explained that the work I needed done was covered under warranty from my fall visit, honored it, and got me in and out in a flash. My Hyundai now runs as smooth as melted butter. I brought my son's car here after it was in need of a tow and new battery. The car was in need of a few additional repairs and I felt I was treated fairly and not given the runaround. I was visiting out of town and certainly wanted to feel I could safely drive the vehicle. One of the issues was to repair a wheel hub that had been hit in a long ago accident. I was told that a used part was all that was necessary but, the used replacement part I obtained was also damaged. After Christian put it up to examine I did get a second replacement from Elgin Auto Parts with no hassles. Now, PepBoys could have just put the first part on the car and I being a senior citizen would have been none the wiser. So all in all I feel that Ray runs an honest shop with friendly and timely service. I feel I can trust them to do honest work and even to much so that I could consider changing over to this PepBoys for servicing my own car and I live in Florida! read more

It was literally the worst thing to ever happen: my car engine exploded while driving on the highway to see family out in Wisconsin on Christmas Eve. Pulled off the highway, no one was hurt, and due to the fact that it was Christmas Eve, there were virtually no mechanics open. Save Pep Boys. A tow truck took us there and despite my panic, Luis, the guy on duty, told me they'd do everything they can to help out. Unfortunately, the mechanic popped open the hood and saw a giant, gaping hole in the engine of this 1997 Toyota Corolla. They had never seen anything like it. There was no hope for us. Also, there were no rental cars in the area. While family did eventually drive down and rescue us, Luis continued to make sure we were taken care of. He understood our plight, recommended and wrote down the numbers of various parts shops in the area that could take care of the now-defunct car, and overall couldn't be more accommodating if he tried. The day was a rough one, and it could've been so much worse had he not been there to help make us feel like we were getting the best care possible. Truly, absolutely exemplary service. read more

Avoid at all cost. They quoted 600 for a water pump replacement which I refused to pay. I replaced it myself for 70 dollars. They also quoted 800 for a ac condenser which I also replaced for 100 dollars. Whatever they quote you can find the parts for 80% less anywhere online and get them delivered faster than they can get. read more

This location as well as Crestwood, Lied multiple times, billed for work they didn't do then redid the work truck had same original problem now they want me to re pay ridiculous they also try and bully or intimidate which is a joke! Worst place even what a fraud and ripoff just liars and thieves. What terrible customer serves as well they also outright lied and make you feel like your the one who did something wrong. Pep Boys in Elgin has a very valuable employee in Luis. He was amazing to deal with on the telephone as I called to inquire about getting tires on my daughters' Audi. I had the tire information and he knew exactly what I was talking about along with a cheery personality. He was so willing to help. The prices at Pep Boys were a little higher than other tire shops but I purchased at this location because of Luis. My daughter brought the car in for tire replacement after I placed the order on the phone and Luis was as pleasant and helpful in person as he was on the phone. He expedited the order so that my daughter could have the tires before a major snowstorm in our area. On the door, it says open 7:00 a.m., I needed my oil checked my engine was making a knocking noise. I sat outside until 7:15. the "open" sign, still not on. I saw some movement inside. when I went in the man inside asked what I needed. I asked him if he could check my oil cause it was making noise. He said he would have to schedule an appointment because there was no mechanic working. I was worried about driving it and needed to go to work. I asked him if he could just see if I was low and I could pay to add oil. He said no. He does not do that. I would need to schedule an appointment for another time. Being a 63 year old woman should not be an excuse for not understanding cars, however, it is a reason to be fearful of getting stranded on the way to work. Pep Boy ads should state "if you are currently experiencing a problem, we can't help you." I will never go there again. read more

I had gotten my rear brakes replaced at a Pepboys in Miami, FL about a year ago. I went in because the pads were worn down (likely due to me being kind of heavy on them). I brought in my paperwork was slightly over the miles allowed for labor warranty and the manager Peter was extremely nice and helpful, and covered the entire job ($308.00). When you buy pads, rotors and calipers through Pepboys they guarantee them for the life of the vehicle. I will definitely be going back and they really saved me a ton of money!! read more

I had been going to pep boys for a while because I trusted the company and have had good work from them in the past. I came in today to have my steering rack and pinion fixed, I found out afterwards I was way over charged. Three hours into them repairing my car they inform me that I needed a new upper control arm replaced, they didn't see it upon first inspection or at any point during those three hours! I said no, and I'm glad that I did because they quoted me at least $200 more than necessary to fix a control arm. I will not be returning to pep boys any longer, very disappointed in the lack of professionalism. read more

I went in for an oil change it was 5 and closing time was 6. All bays were empty except one, there were several mechanics in the back with one guy in front at the desk. The boss, a guy in a white shirt was in the back with the mechanics I noticed that as I drove away. I was turned away. I was told by the mechanic watching the counter that I would have to schedule an appointment. Really? Does an oil change take more than an hour? If you want to deal with bad attitude and dishonesty then this place is for you. BEWARE! Steve the manager at this location, is really shady and dishonest. I took my car to this place because Pep boys has a reputation for good service and prices that doesn't break the bank. I took my car here to see if I can get a tire leak fixed. My tires in the front were wearing down but still has some threading left. This guy swears up and down that the measurements were in the red zone and it's not even street legal. I reminded Steve that the threads are measured in the center of the tire ring, not the outer thread ring. This car is front wheel drive and that is due to under steering. Steve also stated that he can't fix it because it wouldn't be legal to patch up a tire leak on a tire that was too worn down. That was his biased sales opinion. I did a penny test on the front tire threads prior to taking my car here, it still showed enough thread where Lincoln's head was still covered. To make a long story short...This guy just wanted to sell me tires, not fix the leak! I was in a hurry to get to work, so I decided to get a quote since I may have to replace my two front tires in a few months. I decided to just replace them now. He also checked my rear tires and told me they also needed to be replaced. I had my back turned when he checked the rear tires and he told me that the threads were in the yellow zone. But the threads in the rear tires mostly covered over half of the coin which I checked before taking my car here. At this point I knew this guy was pushing me to replace all 4 tires even though the rear tires did not have to be replaced. I had those rear tires in storage after using it for 2 months last summer...I barely just got the tires mounted 3 weeks ago. The rear tires had about almost three months of usage on them. Steve is clearly full of sh#t, this guy is a liar. When I told him I didn't want to replace the rear tires because they were still good, he gave me this look like I'm an idiot. He insisted that I replace all the tires. This guy starts raising his voice and says "you know if you get in a car accident and if an officer finds out that your threads in the rear tires are worn down like that he can give you a ticket". I told him I just wanted to replace the tires in the front. I have taken my car here before and no one has ever given me a hard time like this. When I questioned him about how he measured the threads, that made him really nervous because he knows he wasn't being truthful about the measurements. He hesitated to show me where the actual thread markings were on the thread gauge. I would like to just warn anyone taking there car to this shop for tire repair to make sure you check your threads ahead of time. Also be aware that they will try to sell you tires even if you still have over 75% of your threads left. I came here for a tire leak and left with 2 new front tires. I still can't believe he wanted to replace my new rear tires! Beware of unethical sales tactics. This is the last time I will ever take my car here. I don't appreciate being lied to, talked to like an idiot, or have someone here insult my intelligence. As a loyal customer to Pep boys...I just want to state that not all Pep boys location are bad, but this location on summit street will never have my business again. read more
