I visit this lovely place every month or so to stock up on all things herb and spice. I have some allergies and they are very helpful in finding options without those herbs. Penzey's has a wider array of spices, herbs, and blends than you're going to find at any grocery store, and it's all been very fresh, unlike much of what you'll find at your local Kroger. Penzey's is a great quality national spice shop with a location here in Columbus. The prices are a bit high, but the products are good quality and they run a lot of specials if you sign up for their mailing list, like really good deals ($1 jars and loads of freebies). Note that Bill Penzey is very liberal and has very strong opinions, so the mailing list may not be everybody's cup of tea (personally, I like it). I really just love the people working there. They always ask about what you're making or have suggestions for how to use the products. I've been to this mall many times and had no idea this was here. Mom heard we have a Penzey's, so we found it. Well, found the address. Pulled into the mall and still couldn't find it. It sits in its own building, out by the road. The building was apparently a bank, and deserves a visit for its design alone. Plenty of parking, easy access. Inside, it smells wonderful. There are sample jars for each spice, and many, many spices. All the usual suspects, plus their own blends for any purpose. Mom got a lot of little pouches to make into her own gift boxes, and they actually have little boxes and things to make your own, plus empty jars so you can subdivide or blend. I got a couple of blends to season assorted meals. I was wondering what Baby K would do in a spice store. When I told her where we were going, she said "I no like spicy stuff," so we had to explain that spices aren't always spicy... Anyway, they have a little table where kids can color, and provide crayons and paper. She loved that. Plus, free stickers and a pin when we left made her happy. Excellent customer service, I've always been treated with respect and friendliness. They always greet customers with a smile, and are always offering help without hovering over customers too much. There are no spices like Penzey's, definitely superior quality. They make a remarkable difference on what you cook, bake, prepare, consume. The products at the shop are displayed very nicely, well organized, with excellent descriptions, clearly priced. The place looks always clean and organized. I honestly believe that any person who holds the Penzey's Company owners' political views against their employees is using very poor judgement. The employees, in my experience observing their interactions with customers MANY TIMES, and with my own experience with them, have never (in my experience) treated any customers with prejudice and/or disrespect. People might feel offended by the COMPANY OWNER'S political view, therefore feeling a certain degree of displeasure at entering the store. Please don't hold that against the employees, who are just trying to earn a paycheck. Many of them might or might not share your political view, but are wisely refraining from displaying it or discussing it. As a matter of fact, remember this: EVERYONE has a right to their own opinion about everything - including politics. Boycotts are your choice, as a citizen. Calling other people's opinion "anti-American" is just your own opinion, not a fact. The owner of this company simply has a different opinion than yours and of those who call him & his views "anti-American". However, Penzey's owner is just as entitled to his opinion as the people who think differently. That's just being American. Everyone has a right to their own point of view and opinion. Forcing you to adopt that opinion is what would be anti-American. I don't see any sign or indication of that at the store - the signs are just ads for promotions and offers, and the sign about masks being optional and available inside for those who choose to wear them. Oh, and the sign asking people to refrain from removing the boxes outside, as they are there for a certain purpose. See, I might not agree with Penzey's owner's point of view and his opinions, or the point of view and opinions of those who oppose his views. However, that alone won't keep me from buying a great product, when Penzey's spices are far superior than the competition. read more

Penzey's has added touchless pick-up. It's a quick and easy process. You complete a form on their website to submit your contact information and select your location and get your shopping list ready. A friendly employee calls you and takes your order and payment and then schedules a pick-up time. They were pretty fast - times were available within a half hour of me placing my order. They provide the information on where and how to pick it up, which is fast and simple, and, just like that, you're restocked up on spices. Yum! read more

Penzey's Spices, you are a spice dreeeeam. I absolutely love cooking and have been wanted to expand my tiny spice collection. So, I walked in thinking I would buy 1 or 2 spices and would not need a basket. LOL. One of each, please?! Penzey's layout is extremely easy to navigate. All sections are clearly labeled whether it is "Baking", "Pepper" or "Cinnamon". You won't get lost in this sea of spices. They also make it easy on the customer because each bottle has a description of what's inside so there's no guessing games going on. The spices come in a few different sizes so I was thrilled beyond belief to get a fair share of small ones (1.1 oz) so that I could try plenty without being unreasonable. After making about 12 laps, the spectacular women at the counter rung me up and gave me a free massive bottle of air-dried shallots...the special that weekend! They also signed me up for their mailing list so many more laps are to come. MANY MORE. If you like cooking and baking or just walking, you'll be a fan! If you are a chef or a hedge-wizard kitchen cook, you can appreciate being in close proximity to a true bona fide spice shop. I actually only live a few blocks from Penzey's and I am grateful for that good fortune. I often walk there when I run low on an essential seasoning or garnish. The spices are of the highest quality and in my layman experience and opinion are superior to any neighborhood grocery spice shelf. I often partake of their saffron for my paella and Chili 9000 (the self-proclaimed "chili of the future!") seasoning for my lean ground turkey chili. It adds hints of a lot of different influences that bring out hints of chocolate combined with severely other elements that are both sweet but also hot. Each jar is also individually sealed with a sticker that ensures quality longevity and freshness that I appreciate. If you take your cooking seriously or want to inject some interesting new flavors into your dishes, stop by. Their staff are knowledgeable and they even have recipe ideas. read more

How fast can you blow $50 on little bags of powder? Ha ha, these are spices not drugs :) Housed in a converted bank building, the price per ounce might make even a banker blush. Despite my bitching about the prices Penzey is invariably cheaper than the grocery store. Spend $30 and you get a free little jar of their choice, spend $50 and you get two free little jars. Friendly service and I do love the strong flavors. It's also nice that you can choose between whole unground spices and powder. read more

Do you like to cook? Then you need to go to Penzey's! It's housed in an old but very cool looking bank building from the 1950's. (For trivia buffs, it was a Buckeye Federal Savings and Loan in it's previous life.) This store has everything you can imagine. Looking for an exotic spice? Do you need Viet Namese Cinnamon instead of Indonesian Cinnamon. Got it here! Got to have some ginger? Which kind? Powdered China Ginger, Cracked China Ginger, Sliced China Ginger Root, Crystallized Ginger.....get the picture? They have sample jars with the spices in them so you can open and smell them to get the idea of what each spice is. Each spice comes in several sizes too. Another great thing is that they have everything displayed in alphabetical order around the store so it's easy to find what you are looking for. They also have some wonderful blends for those who prefer something ready to go. I tried the Arizona Dreaming and have tried it on veggies and in stews. Gives everything a great robust flavor. They also have gift boxes if you want to buy a gift for that foodie friend or family member you know. I'm thinking Christmas, birthdays and great hostess or wedding gifts here. Beats giving someone another toaster! And the prices you ask? Reasonable for the type of store it is. Plus the quantities you need to buy are small so you can buy several without breaking the bank. I discovered Penzeys after I received their Penzeys Cinnamon (a blend of China, Vietnamese, Korintje, & Ceylon cinnamon) as a baby shower favor. I made a trip out to the Kenny Road Store and fell in love with the cool mid-century round building and all of the wonderful spices inside! My kitchen is now incomplete without their cinnamon blend, Arizona Dreaming, whole nutmeg, Krakow Nights, and pacific sea salt. Do yourselves a favor and sign up for their mailing list; in addition to being incredibly informative and containing multiple recipes and inspiring stories of cooks from all walks of life, the catalog usually comes with a coupon for a free or free w/ purchase spice! This location is staffed with pleasant and helpful employees. There is a newly remodeled kids' art area that is made to look like a pirate ship- definitely my daughter's favorite part of the store. Penzey's is my go to spice place. During COVID they have had to pivot as so many other businesses. They are not allowing any in store shopping. So if you are in the market for some of their incredible spices you can either shop online and get it shipped directly to you, or you can sign up for curbside pick up. If the later is your choice, when you are on their website you choose the pick up choice and then choose the Kenny Rd. location. You choose whatever spices you need and then when you are checking out you enter your phone number. When your order is ready at the store they will call you and you can then let them know a convenient time and date for you to come pick up your items curbside. I have probably used this service at least 10 times during COVID and it goes seamlessly. I also suggest if you have not done it yet, sign up for their mailing list. They are always running discounts. Unbeatable selection, and extremely focused on the goal of helping all cooks (professional or novice) make their dish perfect. I was at first intimidated. I like to cook, and create new dishes, but I would in no way call myself a culinary expert. What's great about Penzey's is the mix of the basics with the finer, more unique spices. You will find something as simple as ground black pepper. Only at Penzey's, they have four or five different varieties of grind sizes. They also have mixed seasonings for cultural flavors like jerk for chicken, fajita seasoning, and Singapore seasoning. One of my favorites is the Smoked Paprika. Paprika is unique enough. When it's smoked, it brings out the sweetness that I didn't know was there with a savory after taste. read more

With a peppercorn section that is as large as most grocery stores' entire spice selection, this seasoning superstore has a dizzying array of spices and herbs. If you're looking for a spice, chances are Penzey's has it...and for a reasonable price. In addition to the more predictable cinnamon, pepper, and basil, the store also stocks more unusual items -- think whole star anise pods or $80 saffron. Seasoning blends and varieties of salt also take up space on the store's shelves. Lots of prepackaged gift sets are available. I became acquainted with Penzey's Spices about 8 years ago. The first seasoning blend I tried was Fox Point, and I was hooked from the beginning. If my eggs at breakfast don't have Fox Point on them, they just aren't the same! Since that first try, I've had opportunities to try many of the other spices. Bicentennial rub makes an awesome peppered bacon as well as a mean pork roast. The Chili 3000 is a unique chili blend beyond just chili powder. Ruth Ann's Muskego is a favorite on cooked vegetables, but is also very good on chicken. I could go on and on. We've almost completely converted our spice cabinet to Penzey's brand in the last 8 years. You can buy spices in several different sized jars, and most even come in larger bags for refills. They also have a quarterly magazine with lots of great recipes. And many times the magazine comes in the mail with coupons attached. Often the coupons are for a free spice, sometimes free with purchase. This has given us opportunities to find new spice blends we might have never tried otherwise. It's actually a little bit absurd that I haven't reviewed Penzey's previously. I'm here on an almost monthly basis, and at least half of the spices in my kitchen are from Penzey's. Listen, I love cooking with spices and seasonings. I can't stand bland food (or food that has only been seasoned with salt and pepper), and Penzey's clearly understands my needs. And sure, they have plenty of things you can get in your regular grocery store, but they also have a lot that goes beyond that. Plus, if you get on the email list, they send you deals, which is always a plus. Beyond the goodness of their products, the general character of Penzey's is one that I can get behind. The employees are always gracious and welcoming. And a few weeks ago, when the owner, Bill, not only vocally spoke out rampant bigotry and prejudice, but also stood his ground when some folks threatened to take their business elsewhere, I knew that this was a business that's truly worth supporting. For one reason or another, the spice suppliers in my neighborhood don't float my exotic-smelling boat. Penzey's rubs me the right way, so I'm glad it's not too far away. It's a great place to find whole spices. They have tons of variety. Want cinnamon? They have like five kinds for you to choose from. Don't know what something is? There are big jars you can open up to get a whif of an unfamiliar spice or blend. Speaking of spice blends, I'm not usually a fan, but theirs are really good. I like "Arizona Dreaming" on popcorn/everything. Its a great value for the quality. Sign up to get their catalog and you'll get coupons for free stuff. My only complaint is that they close kind of early. If you like to cook, or love a cook, it's worth it to pay a visit. read more

I used to get my spices from Penzey's back in St. Louis and was resigned to having to order them via the mail when I moved to Cbus. But then I discovered they had one here - Happy Happy Joy Joy!! Any spice you can imagine is probably in here not to mention the recipes you can take home free with you (there is an applesauce raisin cake in my cupboard waiting to be made right now). I was in need of ground up rosemary (until I can grow my own again) as hubs hates tasting the 'sticks'. Couldn't find it anywhere else BUT here! Irish lamb stew was saved! My supply of jerk seasoning is now restocked as well. Sometimes its just fun to wander around in here to see what they have and to imagine what culinary delight you could create. As a chef I go through quite a bit of herbs and spices in my cooking at home (maybe I don't need it but I have four spice racks on my wall). I definitely don't like paying a premium for little glass McCormick jars that don't last very long. Despite being cost effective, I don't have the space to keep institutional size spice containers from somewhere like GFS. That's where Penzey's comes in. At Penzeys you can get almost anything you'd ever want and once you have a jar too put it in you can buy whatever you need in bags that have much more in them than a jar and are a fraction of the cost. The staff is well educated in what they're selling and always friendly. I make about two big trips here a year (got to keep stuff fresh) and they're always helpful. Another random plus is they sell some unique spice/herb blends that for the most part are salt free, which is great for those watching their sodium. read more

Love this place. It's a cooks dream. If you need a spice, Penzy's has it. I am going to make an Indian dish tonight and it called for Cardamom pods. Well you know Kroger or Wally World didn't carry it, so I took the drive over to Penzy's. Not only did they have cardamom pods but they had 3 different kinds of pods at a very reasonable price too. I love going around and smelling all of the spices they have out in the jars. Makes you wish you were Emeril or Bobby Flay as the place definitely inspires you to want to create wonderful fragrant dishes. They have a great website too in the event you want to shop from the comfort of your own home. They have wonderful sets of spice boxes/gifts that would make a great gift for the foodie you know. Penzey's is a chain of spice shops. I'm not sure how big, but I have been to their locations in St. Louis and Madison, WI. They offer a wide selection of great spices at fair prices, with discounts if you buy in larger quantities. The staff is really helpful and friendly, which is good when you have to figure out which paprika, peppercorns, or cocoa powder to buy. Penzey's is a great place to buy a gift after all the cool stuff on the wedding registry is spoken for. They have a number of pre-boxed gift sets, or you can mix-and-match. If you buy a gift box, you get bay leaves, cinnamon sticks and nutmegs to use as packing materials. It makes for a cute package that people seem to enjoy opening. read more

When I first moved here over ten years ago I was intrigued by this spice store which I passed on my way to work. A whole store? Of spices? Really? I finally stopped by one day and was so glad I did. There were shelves and shelves of spices, herbs, salts, and extracts. Some I had heard of. Some I didn't. For each spice, herb, etc. there is a written description along with a glass jar containing that item. This allows you to open the jar to view and smell the item. (I have purchased many unknown spices from Penzey's based on the smell alone.) The first time I visited Penzey's I wanted to buy everything in the store. Instead I wisely purchased only what I needed along with one new item. That has been my habit ever since. Every time I go, I try something I have never had. I have also taken various friends and co-workers to Penzey's. Every person I have taken absolutely loves it and soon becomes a regular shopper. I highly recommend getting on their mailing list either off their website or at the store. At least quarterly, I receive an offer for a free spice or herb. Sometimes you will need to make a $5 or $10 purchase. Other times, it is completely free. Enjoy! read more

Can I be honest for a minute? I was actually a little underwhelmed when I went to Penzey's. I suppose I was expecting the grand end all to my spice shopping needs, but I was disappointed with the lack of selection for something as simple as salt. Let me explain. Recently I have decided to become an amateur cupcake baker. If I could switch my major at OSU to "cupcake" it would be done by the time you had finished reading this sentence. So of course being the overkill kinda person I am, I wanted to buy all kinds of whacky salts and sugars to top my cupcakes with. Specifically I wanted some Pink Himalayan Salt. No such luck. Or maybe some Hawaiian Black Lava Salt? Nope. I did find Fleur de Sel, which is like the champagne of salts, which I threw in my basket quickly. Another strike against Penzey's was the customer service. I walked around the store for a good 30 minutes and not a single employee came up to me and asked if I needed any help. Look ladies, I know I'm young and perhaps a bit hip, but I had every intention on buying at least $30 worth of spices from you in one visit. You don't need to ignore me for every old fart that walks in. And maybe I'm being a bit nit picky, but something can be said about good product design, of which I saw none of in Penzey's. People are more likely to spend money on something that is designed well, because they assume if you have the money to pay good designers, than you have money to make a good product. Not that the product was bad, I've been satisfied with everything I've bought from Penzey's. But boy are those bottles boring to look at. It's neat to have something like Penzey's in Columbus, but I'm going to have to buy my specialty spices online due to a lack of selection at Penzey's. read more

You'll be able to smell the spices from the parking lot before you even make your way through the door. I was raised with Penzey's spices. My mother used to order them through the mail and would have them delivered to our house in Cali. When we both moved to Ohio in late '05 I was was happy to hear we could actually go to a real life store. The little round building can be easy to miss but just follow your nose and you'll find the way. The staff is extremely helpful if you need something specific.
