I've been here a few times over the years. Good spices, a good selection, friendly service. Today I needed something I couldn't find at the grocery, and of course they had it. Reasonably priced and high-quality. It's a tiny shop, with small packages of a small product. From 12/24: In the middle of the North Market hoopla sits a wonderful spice market. I had no idea there were this many spices in existence. Yet Ben, the owner, can tell you the five "W's" for each one. There's no way they don't have something. If they don't, they'll get it or let you know when it's due to come in. You can even order online and have your items shipped. We rarely cook, choosing to eat out most every meal. My cousin Jasper is the family chef and is here stocking up at least once a month. According to him, the freshness and overall quality of this product is far better than the bulk food stores. They also have hard to find items you would never get elsewhere. The place was not all busy when we stopped by, but I've seen it get very crowded. They do alright getting you processed and on your way. The cost should be much higher when you consider all the above. It really isn't. It makes me envious and wish I did more cooking and baking! 12/24 read more

What a fun find at the north market prices store. I had a hard time deciding what to purchase, but ended up going with the smoky maple, hot honey and Greek seasoning. Looking forward to barbecuing something magical. Gentlemen working was very courteous and checked in on me. The selection of spices was humongous. I've browsed through this little corner shop in the North Market several times over the years. However, recently I actually made a purchase and of course I had to come tell you about it. Currently the shop is completely covered to protect the staff from COVID. To make a purchase, simply go up to the checkout counter and let the staff know what you want. They will grab it for you and complete the transaction. I was really excited to learn that they have lavender, which tends to be more difficult to find. It's my absolute favorite and I can't wait to start cooking with it. For starters, I plan to make a lavender syrup to add to my coffee. The gentleman running the shop was friendly and I was in and out of there in a jiffy. I'll definitely be back. They have all the neat spices you can't find in your typical grocery store. read more

Such a friendly guy, and he was really helpful in assisting me with choosing a few different blends to bring home. At this point, we wouldn't even think of buying spices anywhere other than North Market Spices. The quality, price, and selection just can't be beat. Our spice cabinet runeth over with North Market Spices bags. But that's ok, because the bags are way better than jars. I don't know how we'd possible organize all our spices if they were in jars. The bags that North Market Spices use take up way less space, are easier to sort through, and easier to measure from. (Pro tip: the container store sells plastic trays that are perfectly sized for storing the bags!) And I haven't even mentioned the great service. Ben and his staff are always exceedingly friendly and happy to help you out. If there's something that they don't have, they'll go out of their way to try and help you obtain it. Nice little shop in the North Market. They carry a fairly decent amount of spices in apothecary jars. I only needed a tiny amount of cayenne pepper so I just bought a small bag for $2.99. Worth checking out if you are looking for something unusual or in small quantities. read more

I will never buy spices anywhere else again. (Well, maybe at the Asian markets. But that's different.) You guys. You guys. I had the most incredible spice-buying experience today. I popped into North Market Spices looking for some high-quality spices to put in a gift basket--a very, very belated Christmas gift to my foodie father. I knew that NMS had a good selection of chili powders, so I wanted to check them out. Not only do they have an incredible selection, but their staff was exquisitely helpful without being pushy--which is difficult in such a small space, since you're practically right on top of each other all the time. The woman and the young man working were friendly from the get-go, telling me about all the great spices that they carry and urging me to smell this and that. Any other people might have sounded sales-pitchy doing this--and you guys may know by now that I normally like to be *left* *alone* when shopping--but the staff is so warm and passionate about spices that we connected immediately, and their help wasn't pitchy at all. This is the kind of shop where you build a relationship with the staff. You can't help yourself, they're just that cool. Needless to say, I walked out of there with a good $20 worth of product: fresh vanilla beans (like $6 for three HUGE, fresh beans! It was an awesome deal), paprika, chili powders, and a few blends that they make right in the store. The prices are excellent considering the quality of the spices. I will definitely return here sooner than later. The only negative about this shop is the space is so, so small--and when there's two people on staff, it's a little difficult to get around. North Market Spices is the newest member of the North Market family and is really a fantastic addition. The North Market was in danger of becoming just one giant food stall and I think a spice place was just what the ol' girl needed. The entire stall is covered with ledges which house huge jars of spices from all over the world. Huge jars mean you can buy your spices in bulk! But if you only want a little spice in your life, fear not! Bags of various sizes are available for purchase. The man behind the counter was charming and helpful, offering to open any of the smaller jars for me so that I could smell anything offered. We chatted for awhile about what different kinds of spices can be used in baking sweets, and he was very knowledgeable. Personally, I would like to see a discount offered for people who return their smaller spice bags for refilling. It would save on waste and also save North Market Spice money on buying new bags! All in all, North Market Spices really rounds out the experience of the North Market. Now you can purchase your produce, meats and seafood for dinner as well as the spices needed to make a tasty dish. A+ read more

I've been wanting to visit the North Market Spice Shop ever since Lisa S. snagged the FTR here almost two years ago. Looks like somebody is tardy to the party. So here I finally went. I was a little overwhelmed because I didn't go in with any specific needs. The feeling didn't last long because the selection is so unique. It's not your usual grocery store rack of A-Z spices. There are new spice combinations and preparations that had me saying, "OMG I WANT IT!" about a million times. Port Brined & Smoked Black Peppercorns? They're mine now. Specialty award-winning rubs concocted by the owner himself? Mine now, too. There would've been a lot more that I would've made mine, but I guess I'll just have to head back there soon when I'm needing some cooking inspiration. The only thing that was missing? When I say big selection, the phrase is literal. No, really. I've been getting more into cooking/eating with herbs and spices, so since I was already in the neighborhood (for the Saturday farmers market), thought I'd stop in. I was at a class put on by Darista Dips earlier in the week, and one of the recipes called for coriander. Dara, Darista Dips owner, had a container of fresh ground coriander at the class. I was able to get a whiff of that spice, and wow! I immediately pictured a hot Chai Tea!! So, I decided to get a small pouch from this spice store. The young lady showed me right to its spot on the shelf. She was actually quite awesome, as she was very informative and knowledgeable. I am a creative cook, and I enjoy seasoning blends and unusual ingredients...so when I stumbled into the North Market Spice booth, I immediately got excited. The booth is rather small, but every inch of shelf space is filled with interesting things to smell and taste. They carry tons of salts and peppercorns and the usual suspects like oregano and thyme...but then there is super cool things like hibiscus powder, carob powder, and their own brilliant smoked salt blends. Both times I stopped by, the men working were above and beyond friendly, offering suggestions on how to use their products and some background on how their spices are acquired. I ended up buying five bags to take home with me--I wish there was a cute little place like this in my hometown, because I would definitely pop in and get some inspiration for dinner!! read more

Lookin to spice up your life? Ahhh...okay, so that was a really cheesy intro to this review. And North Market Spices is anything but cheesy! The shop (which is simply a nook in the northwest corner of North Market) offers sophisticated, gourmet, organic spices from Allspice to Za'atar (an African spice that is very tasty). I was greeted at North Market Spices by the owners with smiles from ear to ear. I did not know quite what I was doing, but they were both very helpful. I got a poultry rub which was a mix of sage, thyme and other spices, and I also got mulling spices for cider or wine. The shop, albeit small, is neat, clean, and attractive. The spices (some of which I have never heard of or seen before) are lined up on the shelves with large jars and small sample jars that you can open up and smell. If smelling these spices don't make you want to buy some, go home and cook up a cuisine, I don't know what will. They have suggestions for recipes and gift packages as well. This place will definitely make you a better cook,,,get some spices and impress your friends with a homemade dinner! And, while you are at North Market, pick up some local meat and veggies to spice up! read more

This place is fabulous! Not only do they have some hard to find spices but they have some killer spice blends. We popped in while we were wandering North Market and walked out with 4 different things! I can highly recommend the English rub blend, it's damn tasty. I have a deep love for dark chili powders and theirs is excellent. Sure, you will pay a little more for some of these spices but they are super fresh and the staff know what they are talking about. If you're looking for something special, you need to give this place a try. read more

Back when I first started going to North Market I used to tell friends "The only thing missing is it really needs a spice shop." Now we have one, and it's pretty much perfect. The folks at NMS have just about everything you could need for your cooking plans, and lots of neat things to inspire you to even greater heights. Even better, everything can be bought in small, medium, or large resealable bags depending on your needs. How many times do you not make some great, adventurous recipe because you don't want to go to the store and buy a jar of spices that you will most likely not use again?!! I live nearby North Market and go a lot, and every time I stop by this little store. Every time, I'm disappointed. Yes, they have lots of unusual spice blends and rubs. But when it comes to slightly-unusual but not-that-strange spices or spices, I'm perpetually disappointed. On a recent trip I tried to find garam masala. No dice. Yes, they have five different kinds of Indian curry powder, but no garam masala. On another trip, I was looking for filé powder. Again, they have many different kinds of southern spice mixes and rubs, but no filé powder. Also, unlike other spice stores, they don't sell their spices in bulk, so I always end up with an amount that doesn't fit my spice jars (which I bought in this store). There aren't many size options for the prepackaged spices either. Overall, the store is fun for browsing if you don't actually have a recipe in mind. You can discover lots of great spice blends that you've never heard of. That's fun! But if you actually are trying to make a specific recipe that requires anything even slightly out of the ordinary, don't bother going. read more

They have a great selection of spices, but what else would you expect from a spice place, and the ability to help you pick out just what you need. North Market Spices doesn't have quiet the variety Penzey's Spices but I like um anyhow. This was a great find while visiting Columbus. read more

Still impressed by their selection and friendly staff, but after trying some of the spice mixtures and extracts I bought some were disappointing. The spice mixes were decent in my opinion, but a few of the flavor extracts were awful. I purchased a "peanut butter" baking extract and tried it in a few different items- no matter how small a dose I used or what I changed it tasted like pure chemicals every time. read more

The spice selection is plentiful, and they're all available in many different sizes. Sure, you pay a little bit more, but you get what you pay for. This stuff is on point, and the staff knows what they're talking about. I stopped in to get some cinnamon and was smelling the different varieties. As I was doing that, one of the staff members came up and explained the scent differences of each, which was fascinating. I had always assumed there was just "cinnamon", but boy was I wrong. I ended up choosing the ground Saigon Cinnamon. Yes, it's expensive ($8.59 for 2oz), but wow is it amazing! The flavor blows away that 99 cent bottle I used to pick up at the grocery. There are so many exotic spices and available, it's worth it to just pop your head in and smell a few new things. You'll fall for something, for sure! read more

By a wide margin this is the best source for spices in Columbus. The quality is considerably better than even the best stuff you could find at a regular grocery store. They have a massive selection with tons of variations on everyday spices - Egyptian oregano, evaporated sea salt, etc. They also have an amazingly friendly and knowledgeable stuff that know more spices than most anyone I've ever met. My inner foodie was inspired :-) Unless you already know how to use spices, a trip to the local grocery store can be a shot in the dark. North Market Spices takes the guessing out of the equation. All of the spices are in really cute glass jars, that you are able open and smell. I was blown away by the amazing selection of sea salts. I walked away with a bag of chopped tarragon and powdered ginger. I think it would be super awesome if they placed quick tips next to all the spices, like great with lamb or fish! NM Spices is a pretty cool storefront. It's got pretty near every spice known to man. Well, not really that many but you get the idea. It does have huge quantities in large glass jars. When you think about how little you use, it'll take a ton of customers to use that amount. But it's a nice addition to the market and I'm sure I'll be back. read more

Such nice owners! They have a great selection. I have loved everything I've bought here. The cinnamon is powerful. The chipotle chili powder out of this world. The flavored peppercorns dress up a good steak or chop. They have plenty of ethnic cuisine spices-star anise, Chinese Five Spice, many curries. I always stop here when I'm at the market. What an awesome shop in the North Market! They have just about anything you're looking for, and then some. Went there specifically with a laundry list of spices to make my own vermouth. I handed over my list and (I'm guessing) the owner grabbed everything on it for me, took it to the counter for me while I basically waited by the register, and even suggested a substitute herb for the one thing they didn't have! That was so helpful since I really didn't know where to begin to look for any of the items I wanted. And on top of that, very reasonably priced! read more
