Penny's Diner - Diners Near Me - Yuma, Arizona

Road Trip Series, Part 38 Greasy Spoon Series, Part 1 Road trips aren't for everyone. I get that. Personally I love them and one of the reasons is planning where to spend the night when you've just had enough driving for one day. That place is neither home nor your desired destination. It's the in-between. The there, but not "there" yet. During our Flagstaff road trip we spent a day in Phoenix, which meant that getting home that night would likely stretch us beyond our safest limits, so we planned a layover before completing the rest of the drive home the following day. It was while arriving at our hotel in Yuma, Arizona, that we noticed a 24-hour diner within walking distance. Oh, yeah. Our agenda for the next morning just became clear: experience "Penny's Diner." From the exterior it appeared to be the quintessential "greasy spoon." Sadly, such places are often overlooked and under appreciated, but I find the charm of an inexpensive diner undeniable. Hold the pretense and just hit me with some comfort food and a side of friendly service! The first things you'll notice when you enter Penny's are the carefully curated 50's music playing, the associated time period memorabilia, and the sizzling of the grill. Ah, ambiance! Inspired by this experience I've decided that if I ever run for city council my campaign platform will include a resolution that all "greasy spoons" located within city limits be required to serve hash browns with every meal. Order of eggs? Your side of hash browns are part of the package. How about oatmeal, a bran muffin, or bowl of cereal? Yep, they all come with a crispy friend. I may need a little help squeezing my campaign slogan onto the yard signs though. "Hash browns with every meal. That's not just common sense...it's the law!" And that's...Henry's Take. #greasyspoon #henry4citycouncil read more

We went in for a midnight eats fest, if you will. It was just as I remembered it from years ago; a decent sit-down place with the 1950's motif. I've usually have reservations about '50's diner motifs because of what my ethnicity went thru back then, but that's more of a "me" issue! Nevertheless the meals were good, the customer service above par, and I felt relatively safe eating there with my group late at night. Taste for the munchies, in a nostalgic setting? Don't sleep on this diner! read more

We came for a late dinner. The diner only had 1 waitress and 1 cook for the night so be aware it might take awhile to get your food. The vibes were nice, however the bathroom smelled really bad. Our food all came out at the same time but unfortunately they all came out lukewarm. My husband asked for no tomato on his burger but still received tomato. I'd make sure to double check with the waitress that they take out any toppings or ingredients you ask, in case you have allergies to them. Overall, it was a classic diner experience. There was no WOW factor. They're open 24 hours and have a lot of parking. read more

To be fair ... we didn't stay. The two stars are because it's really a cool atmosphere walking in with the double doors and all the shiny metal. However, once inside it's very similar to Waffle House. That's not a turnoff. The place was chaotic. Places were empty and there were folks lining up for seats. Eventually, we were seated and then we discovered if we want to see the menu we needed to use our dying phone to check it out online. What? I had questions and no one to ask. Like I said this whole place was chaotic. Since we hadn't ordered, we left. I want a menu, I want someone to answer my questions about the menu or I could have eaten at home. read more

Loved their food. I went the other night and saw roaches running around behind the stove. I had just finished eating. Gross and sad. read more

Beware everyone!!! Went there for a late night dinner and this place is disgusting. The food was horrible had no flavor. The cook and waitress were very rude. Also, before we got our dinner, we were encountered by some roaches that came from the kitchen area. This place needs to be shut down. I would not recommend it to anyone. read more

I love this resturant. Soon as I walk in it feels like home.. the food here is wonderful. And every time I come here the servers and cooks are constantly cleaning and prepping. And the atmosphere here is just so welcoming . The music is great and I would come here every day if I could . Great job everyone . You get a 5 star from me read more

This is the only restaurant that actually cooks the food the way I ask them to. I have a lot of allergies and other restaurants don't care. A couple of the waitresses are really nice and actually care. Keep in mind that the waitress is responsible for all of the cleaning, making salads, sundaes, milkshakes, etc. and management doesn't want to provide more people. read more

First timers... the service was on the ball and very nice. The ambiance was very busy but you wouldn't know it really with the way they took care of you. And, the food (Classic breakfast and a skillet) was good. Recommended and we'd go back. read more

Cool atmosphere, clean and polite staff. Waitress greeted us with an apology for not having menus. She said corporate got rid of them during Covid and refuses to bring them back. Not a fan of no menus! Our food came quickly. Three different items ordered (mushroom Swiss burger, bacon burger and Philly cheesesteak) and not one of us was impressed with our selection. If you enjoy a juicy burger, this is not your go to location! French fries were okay, a tad too greasy and tater tots were soggy. My dad asked to have brown gravy on his fries. The gravy looked more like soup. He described the flavor as "tasteless". How in the world can one make a mushroom Swiss burger dry? I have no clue, but they succeeded! Worst burger I've ever had! Though the "diner" atmosphere is bright and unique, I think we will pass on another visit as 3 disappointing meals out of 3 isn't impressive and leaving a restaurant smelling like grease isn't a plus either! read more

Food is great. service was horrible. I waited for them to take my order and I knew they were a little busy, no biggie. But got super upset when they started taking orders for people that showed up after me and looked at me to say. "We haven't forgotten about you". If you haven't forgotten about me then you purposely skipped me then. only apology I got was from the customer, not even from the lady taking orders. read more

Jolly was attentive and very friendly. Good conversation! Along with that she's also a great cook and server!

Walked in told sit wherever you want. After ten minutes of the host walking back and fourth starting at me I finally ask hey can I get a menu or a drink and they point at a QR code. You gotta make an account to look at the menu. You gotta order on the app. Went to a dinner to have a nice meal in an old style dinner vibe place. I always love going to diners and having a large greasy meal. There is something really patriotic about going into neon and metallic building playing 1950's music and overdosing on calories. And this spot gives me exactly that. I came into this place at night, passing through the area. It's located in a hotel area off the freeway, but mostly served local customers. I sat at the counter, ordered, and got my food promptly. The service, and the patrons, were friendly. I had a big scramble with a big pancake. It was delicious, and enough to feed at least 3 people and a small baby. read more

Said we would have a long wait since our party was 5. No problem that was fine. Once we were seated, the waitress said multiple times that she would be right with us as well as the table in front of us. After 15 min of not being helped the table in front of us walked out. When the waitress came to our table she said she was very busy and to just order line and she would be back to take our drink order. She never came back after 20 min of not being helped our party just walked out. Horrible service. read more

Me and my friends went into this establishment and was having a good time when it was time to order our food our waiter, she had short hair and was awful very rude to my friend and didn't pay attention to her order, my friend had asked for "chili cheese fries" and received a small bowl of chili beans.. we had to send back the order, but it took a while. Mind you we were the only other people in this place; she had butted into our conversations and was adding on to our conversations calling me and my friends "Huzz" another term for "hoe". I wouldn't come again.. read more

Cute little place but food is amazing and service is excellent!! We've never had anything bad here in all our visits

Small location, average service, cold toast and weak coffee. Hash browns were not thoroughly cooked and had to send food back.

I generally like going to diners, as they specialize in comfort food. I decided to try this place for breakfast. It started out bad, when the waitress brought the menu, printed in teeny tiny type on paper. I could not read the food descriptions. And there were no prices, either. I've never seen this before anywhere. I just ordered easy: ham and scrambled eggs, hash browns [no home fries offered], toast and coffee. My friend got chicken and waffles. Food and coffee were OK. But the wrapped butter was so cold it could not spread on the toast or the waffle. There was no offer of melted butter. The hash browns were bland. I give it a C grade. The building from the outside view gets a A, though. read more

This place used to be a breakfast staple in Yuma. It has seriously gone downhill the last decades. Want a side of 1 pancake $5 dollars. Prices are high considering what your served and when the food is brought is appears just Tossed on the plate instead of presented well. The menus are the most hideous I've seen they are stained and faded paper binders either home printed paper inserted in plastic dividers. Everything is hit or miss. Specifically either bland or barely just okay. The coffee was absolutely terrible. The wait staff is friendly and constantly wait on you. The decor is unique to the restaurant but has not been maintained whatsoever. Seems like most of the money goes to maintenance for the outside. Hard pass after giving them A second chance. read more

Three of us stopped for breakfast. The food was cooked fresh, hot, well plated and very good. Friendly staff, fast service, good cook!

Great food! Service is good! Do not order from the bar codes, if you do it that way the waitress sometimes don't get the item and also if you leave a tip they don't get that either, it comes to the individual or company who owns them. The menu is on the wall and they also have a paper menu. We went on a holiday Monday, and we were seated right away. There might be waits for big parties. Good Ole fashion breakfast, lunch, and dinner. read more

Penny's Diner is nothing less of a time capsule. The Diner is everything you'd expect from a malt shoppe in the 1950s. Nestled on top of Yuma's Hotel Hill lies a metallic building, neon lights and all. As you enter Penny's Diner your first welcomed by Golden Oldies and then by a yell "Welcome to Penny's Diner!". Around the Diner you'll see memorabilia depicting the birth of Rock N Roll and American Muscle. The menu also pays tribute to the 50s with burgers, shakes, and malts. If it's not your era, take your meal outside and sit on the patio. Penny's Diner is next to the Yuma Palms Mall, just in case you want to have dinner and a movie. Now, if you're too stuffed to drive. The Diner is surrounded by a number of hotels. read more

This place was really good and fun. We sat at the counter and it felt like a diner from my childhood. Small busy but lovely and friendly. The food was pretty good also. Got the frisco burger and the fries were perfectly crunchy and flavorful. The burger was juicy and just as great. We were headed to cracker barrel and saw this place and immediately changed our mind and went here instead and we were not disappointed. Such a cute little diner restaurant. The aesthetic of the restaurant is 50's style. They must of put a lot of thought into the decor inside as it makes me feel as if I live in the 50's. It's in a convenient location for anyone passing through Yuma. We had quick quick service and the food was great for a diner. I highly recommend the French onion dip sandwich!!! Also the restrooms were very clean which is always a plus for me. The only thing that I could say is that I wish their menu wasn't a plastic folder. read more

We are here in a river float trip and we were gonna hit the cracker barrel which our normal stop for this trip but we were talking about it would be cool of they had a little old school diner our here. Low and behold on the way to cracker barrel we past this place and we couldn't resist. I had country fried steak and the man got a country skillet. It was what you would expect. We were on our way from Phoenix to San Diego and needed a lunch stop. There is not much else to stop in other than Yuma. It looks like an old school diner from the 50's from the outside so it seemed like it would be promising. The service was great too. But the food itself was just okay.
