We came for a late dinner. The diner only had 1 waitress and 1 cook for the night so be aware it might take awhile to get your food. The vibes were nice, however the bathroom smelled really bad. Our food all came out at the same time but unfortunately they all came out lukewarm. My husband asked for no tomato on his burger but still received tomato. I'd make sure to double check with the waitress that they take out any toppings or ingredients you ask, in case you have allergies to them. Overall, it was a classic diner experience. Personally I love them and one of the reasons is planning where to spend the night when you've just had enough driving for one day. That place is neither home nor your desired destination. It's the in-between. The there, but not "there" yet. During our Flagstaff road trip we spent a day in Phoenix, which meant that getting home that night would likely stretch us beyond our safest limits, so we planned a layover before completing the rest of the drive home the following day. It was while arriving at our hotel in Yuma, Arizona, that we noticed a 24-hour diner within walking distance. Oh, yeah. Our agenda for the next morning just became clear: experience "Penny's Diner." From the exterior it appeared to be the quintessential "greasy spoon." Sadly, such places are often overlooked and under appreciated, but I find the charm of an inexpensive diner undeniable. Hold the pretense and just hit me with some comfort food and a side of friendly service! The first things you'll notice when you enter Penny's are the carefully curated 50's music playing, the associated time period memorabilia, and the sizzling of the grill. Ah, ambiance! Inspired by this experience I've decided that if I ever run for city council my campaign platform will include a resolution that all "greasy spoons" located within city limits be required to serve hash browns with every meal. Order of eggs? Your side of hash browns are part of the package. How about oatmeal, a bran muffin, or bowl of cereal? Yep, they all come with a crispy friend. We went in for a midnight eats fest, if you will. It was just as I remembered it from years ago; a decent sit-down place with the 1950's motif. I've usually have reservations about '50's diner motifs because of what my ethnicity went thru back then, but that's more of a "me" issue! Nevertheless the meals were good, the customer service above par, and I felt relatively safe eating there with my group late at night. Taste for the munchies, in a nostalgic setting? This is the only restaurant that actually cooks the food the way I ask them to. I have a lot of allergies and other restaurants don't care. A couple of the waitresses are really nice and actually care. Keep in mind that the waitress is responsible for all of the cleaning, making salads, sundaes, milkshakes, etc. and management doesn't want to provide more people. read more

To be fair ... we didn't stay. The two stars are because it's really a cool atmosphere walking in with the double doors and all the shiny metal. However, once inside it's very similar to Waffle House. That's not a turnoff. The place was chaotic. Places were empty and there were folks lining up for seats. Eventually, we were seated and then we discovered if we want to see the menu we needed to use our dying phone to check it out online. What? I had questions and no one to ask. But got super upset when they started taking orders for people that showed up after me and looked at me to say. "We haven't forgotten about you". If you enjoy a juicy burger, this is not your go to location! French fries were okay, a tad too greasy and tater tots were soggy. My dad asked to have brown gravy on his fries. The gravy looked more like soup. He described the flavor as "tasteless". How in the world can one make a mushroom Swiss burger dry? I have no clue, but they succeeded! Worst burger I've ever had! When the waitress came to our table she said she was very busy and to just order line and she would be back to take our drink order. I always love going to diners and having a large greasy meal. There is something really patriotic about going into neon and metallic building playing 1950's music and overdosing on calories. And this spot gives me exactly that. I came into this place at night, passing through the area. It's located in a hotel area off the freeway, but mostly served local customers. I sat at the counter, ordered, and got my food promptly. The service, and the patrons, were friendly. I had a big scramble with a big pancake. This place used to be a breakfast staple in Yuma. It has seriously gone downhill the last decades. Want a side of 1 pancake $5 dollars. Prices are high considering what your served and when the food is brought is appears just Tossed on the plate instead of presented well. The menus are the most hideous I've seen they are stained and faded paper binders either home printed paper inserted in plastic dividers. Everything is hit or miss. Specifically either bland or barely just okay. The coffee was absolutely terrible. The wait staff is friendly and constantly wait on you. It started out bad, when the waitress brought the menu, printed in teeny tiny type on paper. I could not read the food descriptions. And there were no prices, either. I've never seen this before anywhere. I just ordered easy: ham and scrambled eggs, hash browns [no home fries offered], toast and coffee. My friend got chicken and waffles. Food and coffee were OK. But the wrapped butter was so cold it could not spread on the toast or the waffle. There was no offer of melted butter. The hash browns were bland. I give it a C grade. Got the frisco burger and the fries were perfectly crunchy and flavorful. The burger was juicy and just as great. Such a cute little diner restaurant. The aesthetic of the restaurant is 50's style. They must of put a lot of thought into the decor inside as it makes me feel as if I live in the 50's. It's in a convenient location for anyone passing through Yuma. We had quick quick service and the food was great for a diner. I highly recommend the French onion dip sandwich!!!
