Hamburger meat extremely dry and very over cooked. Sliced jalapeños and grilled onions served on a bun. No condiments making it even more dry! No lettuce no tomatoes. Onion rings were oily. We ordered the appetizer of cheese curds and those were fantastic and then our all meat pizza arrived. Had a nice sweet sauce and tasted great. The Hive Restaurant is located on the west end of the Town of Wellton, the spacious eatery is perfect for any size group. During my visit, I ordered the turkey, bacon, and avocado salad. The salad was a good size with plenty of leafy greens, turkey, and a sizable scoop of avocado. The server was polite, attentive, and easygoing. Good Local Food Location: A bit off the freeway but you're going to have that if you go where the locals go. Because they were working on empty lot adjacent to The Hive there was plenty of room for a motorhome and vehicle in tow. Not sure it that will always be available but the sparsity of the town gives the impression it shouldn't be hard for a RV to navigate the city and find a spot to park. Ambiance: The Hive definitely likes the bee décor but just enough where it's stylish and not gaudy. Comfortable atmosphere that was nearly completely full of hard-working local farmers taking a break. True SW Americana. Service: Despite the crowd only one wait staff was working but boy was she working. Yes, we had a wait for our food, but she moved swiftly to keep things flowing and great customer interaction when requested menu items ran short. Don't come here if you're in a hurry but be sure to stop by if you want kind folks serving good food and good prices. Food: We ordered the burgers (Ortega / green chili, and the old-fashioned cheese) with fires, rings and side salad. Average sized patties with a good tasting but nothing special. The fires and rings were crisp, and salad fresh. Cleanliness: Not a concern. Everything wiped down, floors clean, and bathroom looked and smelt clean. Even the peak into the prep station from the bathroom hallway let you know they take pride in their restaurant. Overall: 5 Stars for Wellton and 3 Stars in comparison to San Diego so let's split the difference and call it 4 Stars, done and done. read more

This is our third visit. Food is very good. Just some weird idiosyncrasies. For today, I found out that they serve mayo on the side. When I go out to eat, I don't want to have to prepare my food. But the sandwich was good, and so were the sweet potato fries. My husband also had to put mayo on his burger, and the burger itself was lukewarm and tasted like it may have been recooked. French fries were good. The waitress should have come back after serving our food to see if everything was okay. I had to get up to get more mayo. The last time we were here it took the waitress so long to enter our order into her handheld device we almost walked out. So, food is good but just small things that prevent it from being totally enjoyable. For some reason my above review didn't post so I'm going to add on regarding another visit today. Dusty Rose was closed and I wanted breakfast so we decided to give it another try at the Hive. Sign on the door said no breakfast until further notice. So we decided to have lunch again. My husband ordered the club and it came out differently than when I ordered it, but the fries were good. I ordered fish and chips. The fish was over cooked, almost burned. In the past I enjoyed dining in, until the pandemic hit. I then ordered my food via the drive up window, which I loved that option and the breakfasts were pretty good. Service is horrible. We waited 20 minutes and had to get our own menus. After 40 minutes, the waitress breezed by and told us it'd "be a while". Never bothered to take our drink orders. So we left. Sometimes it is the little things that distinguish a 4 star place from a 5 star. First off, it was 90 degrees outside and the AC inside was FANTASTIC. And since we were traveling plus had our little dog with us, they said she could come in and sit under our table to keep cool. How awesome is that! Also, the bathrooms were spotless. Just those small things are worth a star. In addition the burgers were very good. Fresh meat and veggies. The fries were perfect and were a good amount (I hate when I order a burger with fries and they only give 10 fries. Not here though). Try the "stinger burger" it will wake up your taste buds.
