Penn's Thai Cafe is now owned and run by two women named Ta (the chef) and Tata (the hostess). They are both so sweet, and the food is so good, I came back twice in 2 weeks! First time here, I chose 2 dishes to try - T5 Gra Pow Moo Krob (spicy crispy pork with basil) and SF8 Pad Prik Khing (chicken with green beans) - both absolutely delicious and so fresh! I also got spring rolls and hot and sour soup, both of which were pretty good. The chef Ta was so nice, she heard I never had Gra Pow Moo Krob and wanted to know what I thought of it. She explained that it's a popular street food in Thailand, people go up to the carts and eat this specific dish. I thought it was such a nice touch that she wanted to check in with me as it was my first time dining there. I told her the Pad Prik Khing she made was the best I'd ever had, while the Gra Pow Moo Krob was definitely going on my list of favorite dishes. Second time here, my fiancé and I got N1 Chicken Pad Thai and T4 Khana Moo Krob (crispy pork with broccoli and kale) - both dishes were refreshing, light, and cooked perfectly. Each came with soup again but we switched out Hot and Sour for the Chicken Tom Yum, which was very good! Honestly, this had to be the best Pad Thai we've had here in Michigan. We gave our compliments to the chef as we finished our meal. The decorations are minimalist and I think the tables come from a Joe's Crab Shack - it's fun to read the blurbs on each one. Important things to note about about this little spot: the online menu is very outdated and does not reflect current menu options, After 7pm the restaurant only offers carry out, There is an $8 minimum for card. The interior is quaint but can seat a handful of tables. The spring rolls were hot, crunchy & flavorful. The large white rice is rather small, so if you are looking for a lot to share I recommend two. Some items on the paper menu were still not available to order. This is one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the Troy area. It's a pretty small and cozy dining room, but good for smaller groups. I really like their pad Thai here: I appreciate them accommodating my substitution request (broccoli instead of green onions) without charge. It was delicious - the sauce was well-balanced between sweet, salty, and sour flavors. I will say, the lunch portion is pretty small - my friend finished her entree and she almost always has carryout when eating at Thai restaurants. I recommend the dinner portion if you have a good appetite. Another thing we like ordering when we go here is the crab rangoon: last I went, it was 8 for $5.25 which isn't too bad. It's also not super greasy and the filling is creamy and delicious. The accompanying sweet and sour sauce is watery, but goes very well with rangoon, providing some tang to cut through the richness. I've also tried their pad see ew: good "wok hei" ("breath of a wok") and I got their dinner size which is a much better portion than lunch size at only $2.45 more. It was a little on the salty side, but had really good flavor. They provide a generous amount of pork. The noodles themselves were very firm - they could stand to be soaked a bit longer. read more

Ordered a large order for a lunch party. Fawn (phonetic for her name) was so helpful and accommodating. All of our 20+ orders were ready to pick up at 11am as promised labeled with all the correct levels of spice and special requests! The containers kept the contents warm for our 11:30 party. Open until 7:30pm last night. Not sure if they are associated with the one in RO at all or a stand-alone. Same name. 7 tables inside. Ordered crab Rangoon, green apple salad, pad Thai curry with chicken and steamed tofu and added mixed veggies, extra extra hot and a Gang Pak with chicken and steamed tofu and no baby corn, medium spicy. Add-ons are each $1. The shrimp crackers are crunchy and fresh, not stale. I can hear the madness and cooking frenzy coming from the kitchen. It's on. The crab Rangoon looks thin and yummy. They ate thin, however the wonton dough is a bit dense. The cream cheese is yummy, slightly sweet too. The portions here are sizable. My eyes widened seeing how big the plate for the pad Thai curry was. My Gang Pak was also a decent size. The gang pak is good, nice and spicy, well seasoned too. Lots of veggies, chicken and tofu too. They don't skimp out for the add-ons at least. The pad Thai curry was quite spicy, which was good for my husband. Had lunch at Penn's Thai Cafe today because it's been a while since our last visit. We arrived right at opening time of noon on Saturdays and were told to sit anywhere since no one else was there yet. Our server brought a basket with crispy Shrimp Chips to munch and menus. Once we placed our orders, our server brought us each a cup of Hot and Sour Soup that was all that. My wife ordered Shrimp Pad See Ew mild and I ordered Shrimp Pad Ped medium. We also ordered Thai Iced Coffee and our friend shared his Spring Rolls. The food was great as always and the spice levels were rright on and exactly how we ordered them. The Iced Coffees were refreshing and flavorful and went well with everything. We had a great time, delicious food, and friendly service. I definitely stand by my previous rating. read more

Mix of highs and lows but overall great Thai food for a small city like my hometown! The Pad Ped curry was delicious, and I'll be trying more curries for sure. The Pad Pek and Pad See Ew were both way too salty. The Pad Pek veggies felt basic in terms of how they were cooked - not a ton of flavor. The Pad See Ew noodles were too al dente. The white rice was solid but you aren't coming here for that. Mild is pretty much not spicy at all so don't be afraid of that or higher. Covid Theater has made the spartan Penn's (Penn's?) even more bare. The church basement decor might put some off but you can't eat in anyway so who cares. I Yelped Thai food while driving and decided to give it a try. Good if not basic fare. The veg in my dish looked like frozen peas and carrots. Tastes were good. Medium spice was pretty medium. Crab Rangoon was very good as even my health conscious wife scarfed down the deep fried pockets. Plenty of meat in the Thai Fried Rice. The food was tasty but nothing special. After so many great reviews i was expecting something better. We got the shrimp chips upon ordering, and shortly after a small portion of hot and sour soup. Not a fan. The flavor was very blind. The main dishes: Gal Koa chicken and Kow Pad Nam Prik Pow fried rice with chicken were good, but the portion was very small for the price you pay. The most famous Ferndale spot for Thai gives you twice as much for the same price. The flavor there is also much better. Probably won't be back. Also, not sure if they have restroom, and it's been 2 days from my visit and my coat still smells like fast food joint. terrible. read more

Great Thai place in Troy. Friend and I ordered the pad Thai and the red curry. Both were great, but what was most impressive was their house special fried rice. The bbq pork meat that's kinda like the Chinese style bbq pork in it was just to die for. It was a big plate they gave us, but I almost finished my plate since I couldn't stop eating it. Wasn't too salty or sweet, the texture was just done right. Felt like every since piece of rice had lots of flavor! Friend who knows Asian food well also agreed it was the best fried rice she had tasted. Lady who served us was super nice, and kept checking on us to see if we were ok. The shrimp chips (like Korean shrimp chips), were a good appetizer. I liked how they put the peanuts separately from the pad Thai which was sweet and sour, in case you wanted more or less. The chicken in the pad Thai was tender and juicy. The shrimp in the curry we ordered was done perfectly and very juicy, and wasn't an overpowering curry. I might get it the spiciest level next time though. Pleasantly surprised by this place when we were about to get spicy Korean food on a freezing Michigan weather day. read more

(The person with me ordered pad Thai extra spice) Upon ordering it that way when she brought out the soup she assured me that she made my spice level on the soup no spice as well :) soo thoughtful! The crab rangoons were good- really oniony though. The shrimp chips were great but then again I like them from anywhere lol. Do not come here for the ambiance, as there is none. But the food is sensational. Tiny place in a strip mall. Very low budget buildout, and somewhat dated, but clean. Handful of vinyl covered tables in tiny dining room. Opening to kitchen, so see and hear everything going on there. Plus bathroom all the way in back, so you need to walk through kitchen to get there. Bathroom doubles as storage room, old, but clean-ish. Walking to get there, everything seems well organized and run efficiently. Now onto the food. Sensational! Delicious. Large lunch portion for only $8. Spice levels good: medium plus has good spice level, not too mild as many places. Best part is chicken is not scraps. Tender chunks of chicken. No tendons, no connective tissue; just chicken meat. Veg all properly cooked. Come here for the food and expect efficient service in a low budget environment. read more

This is also the reason why I've become obsessed with trying to find great Thai places this in the southwest and west and still, i can't seem to find anything like the Thai I've come to love in the Detroit area. Overall, probably a 3.5 rating. We did a quick dinner here but I think this place may work better for lunch. After placed our order, they brought us some complimentary shrimp chips and soup. The chips were a little stale and the soup has some kind spice that I wasn't very much a fan of. Here are some of the dishes that we've tried: Gai Koa with Chicken 4/5 (came with thick rice noodle, bean sprouts, eggs, peanuts, and onions; it was pretty good chicken quality was good too but honestly really salty...); Pad Cashew with Shrimp 3/5 (came with cashew nut, bamboo shoot, water chestnut, and green onion; very bland dish and will not recommend); Pad Almond with shrimp 3/5 (came with almond, celery, bamboo shoots, mushroom, green pepper, water chestnut, and green onion; it was very similar to Pad Cashew... pretty bland dish and almost no distinction other than some ingredients differences); Gang Keaw Warn with shrimp 4/5 (green curry with peas, eggplant, green pepper, basil, and coconut milk; this one was good and more flavorful but wished that they give more of the "curry sauce" since it's a curry dish). Penn's shrimp was fresh so the upcharge of $1 was pretty reasonable. But be aware that they charge for extra rice for $1.5. We would appreciate if they at least told us... noodle feels more like the typical lunch portion and in dinner price. Because I usually have a lot of leftover whichever Thai restaurant I go. I don't think this place is so much of a dine-in place. Probably better off taking out. My experience was average but I was just really craving for Thai food that one night. read more

WOW! We ordered take out here for the first time last night and it was SO GOOD we will be back very soon! We usually get Drunken Noodles when we order Thai, but haven't found anything very good around here so we tried something new we hadn't heard of before, Gao Koa + chicken and the Pad See Ew + chicken. Both were SO GOOD. The portion was huge and we both have left overs for lunch today. We also had the Curry Fried Rice which was incredible and the Spring Rolls and Tow Hoo Todd (Fried Tofu). After years of intending go get take out from here, tonight I did. Good decision. My Pad Prik was spiced just as requested and way flavorful. My wife enjoyed her Chow Mein noodle dish, flavorful but not saucy. The real star of the night was the green apple salad, a wonderfully balanced and simple combination of apples, red onion, toasted coconut flakes and cashews. The people at the counter were nice, packing the apple salad in a different bag than the hot food. The dining room is small, basic but pleasant. I'm planning on making this regular my Thai take-out place from now on. read more

Love this place, anyone who gives this anything less than 5 stars needs to have their tastebuds checked. The service is always amazing and the food always consistent. The restaurant is decorated nicely and is always clean. I have no complaints, my clothes smelled fine after my visit (maybe because I actually do my laundry lol) to those who complained about their coat smelling funny after leaving the restaurant, maybe it's not the restaurant. ‍ It might just be you. Since this is a family owned restaurant, the atmosphere is great. Great for families, hanging out with friends, a quick lunch, a dinner date, or even a business meeting. I can't think of a single thing that I didn't like about this place. I felt very welcome here and I also left feeling full and not overly stuffed(without having to pay a bunch of money). They really use quality ingredients and it tastes super fresh, they seem to work very quick but they're still able to provide food that's been cooked perfectly! If you're looking for good Thai food & amazing service for a good value, this is where to go. This is a great hole in the wall place that I found through Yelp. Really yummy food for not much $$. With the large portion sizes I was not hungry after leaving this place. The staff is friendly and glad that you came. There's not a lot of seating (mostly it's a to go place), but there's enough room for a few folks to sit and have a good meal. I stopped in after work the other day and was the only one there for a little while. The place is small and the decor is a bit drab and claustrophobic. They could at least open the curtains a bit to get some sunlight in the place. The waitress was attentive and brought out shrimp chips and took my order. I ordered spring rolls for an appetizer and veggies in red curry sauce as my entree. The spring rolls were sort of bland as the wrapping seemed a bit stale and hard to bite into, and the sauce that accompanied them was clear looking and had very little flavor--if any. The curry dish on the other hand was quite good and the portion was large. I almost asked for a box to take some home, but managed to finish it. The curry sauce was flavorful and the veggies were fresh, so I enjoyed the entree quite a bit. After reading all the positive review here, I wanted very much to like this place, but had to give it only 3 stars right now, based on the disappointing spring rolls and the depressing atmosphere. However, I am willing to give it another try. If I had to choose the best place for Thai in Troy right now, I would have to pick Sy Thai on Big Beaver. But, as I say, I may return to Penn to give them another chance. read more
