I was recently in Juneau, Alaska. There is a Pel' Meni there that I passed and didn't have time to visit. Not sure if they are related but, happily, passing by the location in Juneau reminded me it has been way way too long since I have visited the Bellingham location. My visit didn't disappoint. My comparison is Pel' Meni found in Madison. I was a purveyor of fine dumplings in Madison and loved them, but they left mid-college! Someone reopened a shop in Madison which I visit when I go back, but it was great to find the same style of Russian comfort food in Bellingham when we visited. My tip: order the meat only. Oh gosh, where to start? One of the few places open this late in the area (2:30 am), this place plays host to a who's who of the city's late night revelers. As stated in other reviews, this place has no menu. You show up, you get in line, you have some fun with the cashier, and you get your food. There are two options, meat dumplings or potato dumplings, that is all and they are both tasty. Personally my favorite was the meat but get both because you deserve both. They come in a little container, doused with a light spoonful of spicy cilantro sauce, a mini container of sour cream (essential), and a half piece of dark bread to sop up any residual sauce. It's simple, it's delicious, it's $7 (could be cheaper). This meal will sober you up and if not, it will definitely lay a solid foundation in your stomach for the next morning. The first night we went we were a little unsure but as we confidently walked in the second night, we knew where this place stood in the pantheon of Bellingham establishments. I love places that specialize to the point that they do not need an actual menu. They charge $6 for a plate with a piece of bread. The dumplings are boiled up after you order them. The dumpling wrappers were good, and cooked properly. They had a hint of egg in the dough (something you only sometimes find). Of the two I preferred the potato filling, which had a nice balance of onion and pepper. But the beef were also good, yet slightly underseasoned. The toppings provided were a bit different than those I have seen on pelmeni before, and included curry powder, hot sauce, and cilantro, along with the traditional vinegar and sour cream options. On a late Tuesday night I wandered into this small, little shotgun of a restaurant to use the bathroom before I journeyed back to Lynden. I was greeted with a huge smile and one question: meat or potato? I chose meat. Less than 10 minutes later I was looking at a styrofoam container with little doughy mounds covered in what I thought was cumin and paprika and cilantro. I meant to only eat one, to just buy the food so I could use the restroom without looking like a jerk, but half an hour later I was 45 pages further in my book and scraping the bottom of the styrofoam. Eat bite was a mystery. Each bite was magic. Until tonight (when I literally hunted this place out using google maps and intuition) I had no clue where I had eaten. And, for that matter, I had no clue what I had eaten. All I knew is that almost every other day I'd stare wistfully at the photo I took and wish I was eating there again. When I say that this is the best meal I ever ate, I mean it. I can't think of one other meal I have told so many people about. One meal that has puzzled me so much. I had only ever been here one time, when I was black out drunk (when I was 21) and only remember coming to just enough to remember shoveling dumplings down my throat and dramatically expressing my love. 7 years later, I've brought my fiance with me to have the exact same experience (but sober!) They only have 2 menu items: potato and pork/beef dumplings. We got one of each. They come with olive oil, hot sauce, yellow curry and fresh cilantro. I advise getting it as it comes, even if you dont normally like one or more of those toppings, because combined it's an entirely new flavor.
