I've been a regular at Pegah's for many years and grew up near it. I remember when it used to be called San Marcos Family Restaurant! I absolutely love the food and I religiously get the turkey club on sourdough toasted always with NO TOMATOES! With extra ranch. I've been getting that for so long some of the waitresses know my order by heart. The service is wonderful, and it has a wonderful home/family vibe. Hole in the wall place with an affordable selection of yummy dishes. If you're looking for a fancy place, you might look for somewhere else. If you like old school diner places, you'll like it here. Prices are so reasonable that I can see why they had a steady stream of clients. I did notice that people weren't socially distancing nor were they wearing their masks. Long overdue to write a review. I've been coming in some what frequently sense moving to San Marcos. I completely forgot about this specific location until one day I almost drove past it and caught the red light coming from the grocery store up the street. Unfortunately I don't know the names like I do in the Vista location, but not only is one someone who I know from the Vista location but also Sunrise when I used to visit with my Uncle on occasion, but the staff is just as friendly and entertaining (I always get a little laugh from them hearing some comment). :-) I generally would get the Lumber Jack Combo or the AM Starter (AM most of the time delivered Saturday mornings) which is good, but seeing how the past few visits have been in the afternoon, I'll have to try one of the salads (probably the Cobb first) next time I visit. Nice little spot in San Marcos to get away from long waits at other breakfast places. Food and service is always spot on. No long waits to get a table or to order food - atleast from my experience! My family and I have definitely returned here a number of times and the prices aren't too bad. Portion sizes are also just enough. I have Thursday lunch with my good friend and we always go to Pegahs. Last Thursday she ordered the pork chops and eggs and I got the steak and eggs we both got extra crispy home fries ( they are so good) and rye toast . I like my eggs over medium and she likes them sunny side up. The cook is a genius with eggs. Our server was Jamie and she is the epitome of what a server should be. Ordered on door dash and was told it would take 18-28 minutes. I was shocked when I got the notification it was ready in barely 5! I was worried the food would be cold when we picked up 15 minutes later but it was still warm! I had the Country Fried Steak with hash browns and an English muffin. The meat was so tender my little plastic fork glided right through it! The hash browns were okay, 25% crispy/ 75% looked barely thawed out and were a bit hard. The English muffin was awful though and it cost an extra dollar. Skip it. It was tough and doughy. My boyfriend had the Spicy California Skillet and he had no complaints. Whenever I want to get breakfast, I go here and try a new dish. Per my last visit, I got the Pegah's Scramble and it was HUGE! It's a big egg Scramble with sausage and other veggies atop sourdough bread. The Scramble comes with your choice of potatoes or hash browns. The Scramble is full of flavor and definitely could feed two people. However, I ate the whole thing because it was THAT good! The service is always fast and efficient here. Love this restaurant for breakfast! Even when they are busy I've been able to get a table within a reasonable amount of time. The staff are always friendly and in a good mood. The portions are very sizable so recently we have been sharing a plate because I can never finish a full breakfast and I normally don't have that problem anywhere else! Came back today. Our waiter was seriously overloaded. Hit and miss service. I ordered their Taco Salad and a cup of Split Pea Soup. The soup was delicious. The Taco Salad came out to me on a plate of cold refried beans. The large Tostada shell it was served in was stale and cold. It bent rather than crumbled. Been craving country fried steak and heard about this place by many of our friends in the area. So the hubs and I both got COUNTRY FRIED STEAK each as we are known not to share that specific meal, or anything covered in gravy for that matter! We went to Pegah's this morning for breakfast. Service was excellent. Food was hot and freshly made. True home cooked flavor/meal. Our server's name was Shanaska, (I believe). Sorry for the wrong pronunciation or spelling...BUT she was wonderful. Very friendly and attentive. The moment I put my coffee cup down, she was right there to pour more. Who does that?! She does! Lol. They were crowded and we still received excellent service. The only bummer was that my Eggs Benedict yolk was over cooked and was not runny, but the flavor was spot on. SUPER yummy, so I did not complain a bit. Portions were very large. Even the kids meals were big. And the mac and cheese was actually made with real cheese. However, I was upset because when we came in, we clearly showed them that we had a coupon to use and they didn't say anything. But when it came time to pay, they didn't accept our coupon because it was veterans day. I just wish they were more courteous and mentioned it when we sat down. Customer service: waiter and waitress we very cool. I think three different people asked if I needed anything. Not overly pushy but just nice. Restaurant: Small but set up very nice. It is a small area but lots of booths and not too crowded. Food: The food was pretty good. I ordered the jalapeno hash with eggs over easy my boy ordered the regular breakfast and we got a kids meal with pancakes, bacon and scrambled eggs. I tried this place out this weekend after I dropped my pup off next door to get groomed and am so glad I did. Very neighborhood family welcoming mom and pop type of diner that was way better than I expected. I don't get into Esco much and wasn't sure what to expect since I wasn't a local. From the moment we walked in we were greeted warmly and seated right away. All the staff made us feel like part of the family from beginning to end. We ordered a combo breakfast and an omelette along with coffee and juice and everything we ordered was delicious. The "Funny" response to my review also came from him. I'm wondering if he did the same to previous customers who remarked on the same exact things I remarked on. Thank you for showing me what you're really like, but show the public something else. You have no worries that I will set foot in your establishment again. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Visited on June 10, at 10:30 AM. I was in town, after driving from over an hour away. The only reason I chose this restaurant for breakfast was because of the great Yelp reviews. I have always had great success learning from other people's experiences and advice, until today. I have no clue why people rate it so well. IHOP or Denny's has better tasting food, so that's saying something. Waitress was attentive and friendly. Quick refills on coffee. That is the reason for one star. However, it's hard to believe that everything my party of two was served was ultimately flavorless. The only tasteful thing was the freshly brewed decaf coffee and machine-spout "poured" hot chocolate with whipped cream. Our order was classic eggs Benedict with home potatoes, and a kids order of hotcakes with one egg and bacon. Although the restaurants window decals and menus state "all homemade food", the hollandaise sauce was definitely from a cheap mix and did not even have any flavor at all. The English muffins in the eggs Benedict were gummy and starchy. The potatoes were pre-cubed and most I guarantee came on the delivery truck. There was no use of what I would call real potatoes, really being prepped in the kitchen. Even so, typically packaged potatoes have some type of flavor. All I could taste was the potency of the peppers in the potatoes. Salt even did not help at all to bring out any potato flavor. It's hard to believe, but even the eggs didn't really have an egg flavor! My daughter's hotcakes had no flavor and were definitely not made in the "homemade" fashion. A cheap mix was used, or a decent mix was not prepared well. Neither one of us could finish our breakfasts. When a place advertises "all homemade food", that's a huge reason I go to that restaurant. Homemade equals "from scratch" in my book, being raised in the Midwest and the South. I'm sure it means the same thing to others as well. Homemade means you make your own hollandaise sauce from scratch, you cut the potatoes after they arrive in your kitchen in a 50 pound bag, food is prepped, prepared, and cooked the way they're supposed to taste. It's a waste of time and money and reputation to do anything else. Otherwise, don't advertise your food is homemade when it's not. Food being made from cheap mixes, cheap ingredients, and any other money saving tactics does not lend to happy customers. Just because food is cooked in a kitchen does not constitute "homemade". Really cool little sit down breakfast joint off of mission in San Marcos. This place has a bit of a homely feel to it that just makes you want to come back. The service is solid, place is immaculate and the food is actually pretty dang tasty. I had the chorizo/avocado skillet with an English muffin and some iced tea, nothing to complain about whatsoever. I would consider this little diner as an alternative to Denny's or even the more crowded Mama Kat's. I recommend giving this place a shot if you're in the mood for a good breakfast. Holy cow! I had no idea what lay behind the exterior of this place. Pegah's sits inside an old slightly shabby strip of shops attached to a 7-11. The outside looks a bit sad and tired, so I've been passing Pegah's by since I moved here a month ago. But on a whim the Wee One and I decided to give it a go. The inside of this place is bright, cheerful, and very tasteful. The service was fast, and friendly. Our breakfast was so amazing that I ate it too fast to get any pics! My daughter had the kids pancakes, and I had the Mexican Skillet. Everything was delicious. The Mexican Skillet was a perfect pile of potatoes, eggs, cheese, and salsa. First Time-and won't be the last. Small place , kind of out of way in a strip center but well worth the stop. Clean ! They were all very friendly and attentive. The owners are working just as hard as their staff . My husband got a meat lovers omelet with home fries potatoes, that were cooked perfect with just enough crunch on the edges. Why do people say this is one of the best breakfast places in San Marcos area? I legit threw up after my meal. Service is horrible, I didn't even get clean plates or silverware. My server was rude from the moment I sat down. He would not make eye contact nor explain specials nor provide me with recommendations of food items. I ordered eggs with hash and turkey bacon, My turkey bacon was burnt. Eggs were supposed to be over easy, they were not even cooked. The hash was my hash, it was ... I can't even describe it. Prices are too expensive, for my party of 4, I walked out with a $60 bill. All of us ordered the same simple eggs over easy with hash no toast and 1 side of turkey bacon.
