I have a special place for Peet's even though I've been sampling their wares for only a year. The staff is always running, doing, grinding beans, fetching drinks and smiling through it all. They work hard and I don't mind tipping them for it. The coffee and espresso drinks are delicious, the environment is nice and the WiFi is free (but comes with a two hour time limit). If only there were Peet's every four feet instead of Starbucks, I'd be a happy camper. read more

So maybe I'm a snob when it comes to food and drinks but I see Starbucks' coffee as the the Bud Light of coffees. Its not strong and lacks flavor, but if you are in the mood for coffee it will do. Peet's coffee, however, is like a micro brew/craft beer. It is strong, full of flavor and definitely satisfies your coffee craving. Maybe I am biased I grew up in NorCal, where Peet's Coffee was founded, and have loved their coffee for years. I was so excited to move here and see that there is a Peet's out here to. In addition to the great STRONG coffee I really appreciate the friendly and efficient service I get every time I go in there! I don't drink coffee. In fact I rarely ever have caffeine, the coffee just doesn't jive with my stomach. There is pain, nasty, ugly pain. Yet, when another trainer walked in to the gym sipping on something cold, refreshing looking and not coffee but in a Peet's cup, I had to inquire. Some iced tea cooler. Hmmm... not coffee, perhaps no pain. I may have to try it. Walking in, (and I have been in here before to pick up coffee for others), the staff is always super friendly, with big smiles and almost rarely is there a wait. Maybe I come in during the off peak hours. Looking at the menu while breathing the smells of peculation. I found my choices, both looked good but neither one jumped out. When asked if I was ready, the lovely, smiling woman behind the counter asked if I would like to sample each to help make my choice. Love that and it helped me too. Both were tasty, but I went with the hibiscus jasmine tea blend. Since I needed some serious heat relief and thirst quenching, I went with a large. Certainly tame on my stomach, but all in all a great drink. Hopefully they can continue this for awhile. Its nice when someone says, hey I am going to Peet's, do you want anything.. finally I can get my revenge for all those trips in the freezing winter and say yes. I refuse to go to Starbucks, so when I needed a jolt of coffee I was on the hunt for anything but Starbucks. It's definitely a difficult search when almost every other corner has a green sign screaming, "over-priced horrible coffee". Ah-ha, but I finally found a place. Peets is comfortable and has that yummy coffee smell. I ordered my regular giant iced latte and waited for the guy to make it. The only thing I didn't like was that they ask for your name and call out your name when your coffee is done. I'd prefer that not everyone in the place know my name....ya know. All in all, the coffee is great, staff is friendly, and the place is clean and cozy. read more

I've been a fan of Peet's coffee ever since my last trip to San Francisco. This is the only Peet's in Chicago (the other location is in Evanston). Even though it's a chain, this location feels like a small, independent coffee shop. I bought some coffee beans here and received a free cup of coffee, which was a nice surprise. I should probably preface this review by saying, I DO NOT DRINK COFFEE!! But, I do drink lots and lots of tea. And, Peet's makes one gross cup of tea. They make tea like they make coffee, boiling hot. This destroys the leaves and compromises the taste of the tea. Sorry, Peet's. Peet's coffee RAWKS bigtime! Remember - they founded Starbucks, and Starbucks broke off of them and went corporate and money-greedy after that. Great environment, and the staff REALLY know their coffee well - it's great to see a place pride themselves on the basic knowledge of coffee, instead of fancy concoctions of sugar and variants of milk and so-so coffee. Peet's has definitely got brewing coffee down pat. I was first introduced to this chain in Davis, CA, and WOW, does it pack a punch. It's like the crack of the coffee world. It's where Starbuck's fans go when Starbuck's stops working. And boy is it yummy. Warning: Unless you're a veteran jet-fuel drinker, just get the small size. Oh my goodness. The people here are so nice! It catches me off guard every time, because A) it is completely genuine, and B) how many people in the service industry seem truly happy to serve you coffee and chat with you? Peet's Coffee must be a terrific place to work, because these people are full of joy. I love it. The coffee and tea are good, too. I don't even remember what I normally order here, because I'm preoccupied with remembering how happy the Peet's staff is. I haven't actually sat down at Peet's, but each time I am there, I see people reading or working on their laptops. This place is cozy and nice and all, but I've stopped here twice for tea when I'm in the neighborhood, and their baristas have absolutely no clue how to make tea. I got sencha on my first trip, and a black tea on my second. They both came to me at the exact same temperature: scalding hot, tongue-burning, and with the bag in. I can maybe forgive this for the black tea, which has to steep for a few minutes anyway and should be brewed around boiling temperature, but sencha is a delicate green tea, which means it should NEVER be brewed with boiling, nonetheless scalding hot, water. And because it's a Japanese tea, it should be steeped for a minute or less. I know that a lot of coffeeshops sell tea as an afterthought, but if they're gonna go to the effort to sell something as rare as sencha, they should learn how to brew it. read more

If you want a stong, flavorful cup of coffee or tea, Peet's is the place to go. It you like sweet, sugary coffee drinks, this is not necessarily the place for you, however there is something for everyone. I recommend the straight up coffee/americano/latte. Their tea is exceptional as well, and if you go on the right day/talk to the right barista, you might end up with an imprompteau coffee/tea seminar. Having bee an avid Peet's fan in Northern California/Berkeley, I was thrilled to see that I could get my fix once I moved out here to Chicago! read more

I want to preface this review by saying that this was my first visit to a Peet's Coffee & Tea. I'll begin with the good news. The peppermint mocha I had was good. The place wasn't overcrowded or too loud. Everything fine so far. Not long after taking a seat I noticed that there were two child seats blocking the washroom door, and a sign posted on the door. That struck me as less than ideal for a coffeehouse. I set that concern aside, at least for a while, but did find it distracting. Call me crazy, but I feel that a public washroom is a necessity at a place of business that specializes in serving caffeinated beverages all day. I knew that the length of my visit would definitely be limited by the lack of a working public washroom. All of this I could have overlooked, but there's more. After some time passed, one of my companions had need for a washroom, and immediately. This kind of thing happens. I had commented on the washroom being blocked off by two child chairs, and what might happen in the event a patron might require a washroom. My friend suggested that the sink was functional, although the toilet perhaps not so much. Okay. So in the event of a hand washing emergency we are all set. But anything else, not so much. So my friend took the bold action of moving the two chairs from in front of the washroom door and entered the "closed" washroom. With that, a Peet's staff member left his customer standing at a service counter, ran to the washroom door, and knocked on the door to ask my friend to get out of the washroom. I thought that an interesting choice of priorities: leave customer standing unattended, and run over to washroom door. But that wasn't the end of it. When my friend emerged from the washroom, I believe he complained to the other staff person that there were no paper towels in the washroom. That complaint was met with a dismissive response: "There's a sign on the door." I guess she told him. End of discussion. And I'm expected to leave Starbucks to be treated like that at Peet's? I think not. Anyone who enjoys being treated like that will be well pleased with the service at Peet's Coffee on North Avenue. read more

I really wish there were more Peet's locations throughout the city, because they do coffee right. I usually just get lattes, mochas, and white chocolate mochas, but they are very consistent. The people who work there are very friendly and helpful if you go there to buy beans (which you should do if you make coffee at home). Once, they screwed up my drink so I had to wait for them to make another, and they gave me a coupon for a free drink! ... I sure do love free stuff. But anyway, the area gets a little hectic on the weekends, so the small seating area is not good if you want to just hang around with your laptop. But, on the other hand, the coffee is so good, you can just drink that and then cross the street and use Starbucks for Internetz. read more

Decaffeinated coffee is the devil's blend. I love Peet's... strong, dark and handsome, I mean, tasty. If you're in the mood for a regular cup of joe, Peet's is the place to go. This is currently my *favorite* type of coffee. Yippee!! Before Peet's, which I only rediscovered earlier this year... I was developing a vague anxiety that there was something wrong with me. I've secretly always harbored a dislike of Starbucks...but rather than blaming the bitterness of the coffee, I began to develop this complex about my coffee buds being out of whack, a mild form of a coffee-chondria, and needing to go to the coffee doctor. But then Peets saved me and dispelled all fears! I loooove Peets. Rich but smooth with never a hint of bitterness. Now, I am never myself unless l have a bag of their house blend in my freezer. What would have been my fate without this 1, singular, solo, lonely location in Chicago? On a practical level, I like to do work at the coffeeshop with a nice vibe, even if the space is smallish like this location. It's quiet on Saturday mornings before the rush, where the early bird couples hang out with their newspapers. Noisy in the late afternoon on weekdays when the private school kids and their moms drop by. Great to quick up a quick cup after you run your errands nearby at Erewhon, Bestbuy. Wholefoods, Ulta, Gap, TraderJoes, Bed Bath & Beyond, or if you need to sober up after a bout at Goose Island. Wifi is limited to 1 hour. And they really do kick you off. Cannot *beat* the free parking and access to all the nearby stores. read more

And because this is the only location in Chicago, I feel like I'm part of a secret society of die-hard fans and ex--Bay Area residents who trek across town just for a whiff. In truth, this Peet's has already been discovered by the bratty college kid crowd, but the whole secret society thing is a lot more fun. This coffee is strong, mind you! There's something rich and smoky about the espresso that takes even a humble vanilla soy latte to new heights. They've also got a wide variety of hot tea choices, and in the summer the hibiscus iced tea is a must-have. Ever bitten into a picture-perfect oatmeal craisin cookie after loading up on stuff at The Container Store? That's basically my idea of heaven. read more

This is by far my favorite coffee and tea shop. I just wish it was on the way to work so I could stop in and grab a cup in the mornings. Being married to a Colombian, I drink a lot of coffee, and this is the only place that I actually like the coffee at since Torrefazzione Italia closed. I really appreciate the passion that the staff have about the products that they offer. (Well, except for the newbies, but they come around if you are patient). I love to get a Jasmine Downy Pearls Tea on a Saturday morning and sit and read the paper. Just an FYI, If you aren't sure what kind of tea or coffee you like, you can contact them in advance and they will do a private tasting for you and your significant other so that you can sample the products and make a decision. 2.5 but rounded it up. I've been here three times. The first two times I got a gingerbread latte, both of which were good. Rich flavorful espresso and lovely micro-frothiness. And I was glad to see they had used Monin syrup. The third time (tonight) I got a masala chai latte, and, boy, do I really regret doing that. On the first sip I knew something seemed off, but I started drinking it anyway since I didn't want to waste it and also because I was really craving a chai latte. When I got to the remaining 1/3 of it, I was hit with a nauseatingly sour chemically taste and tossed it immediately. Maybe it's just me and maybe I had some weird reaction to an ingredient, but whatever is in that chai concentrate they use (comes in a big plastic container with pump) gave me a sour stomach and a headache and masala burps. Why can't more places make their own homemade chai concentrates like Bourgeois Pig and Swim Cafe instead of using either overly sweet pre-packaged stuff like Oregon Chai or mysterious preservative-laden stuff from a plastic jug? If I ever go back here, I'm sticking with a simple espresso drink that uses Monin syrup and nothing from the big jugs.... read more

I've loved Peets since moving here from the bay area in 2006. They have great coffee, chai lattes, and unfortunately for Chicago, mad cookies which are only available in the bay area. The chai latte is spicier than sweet which is as it should be. The coffee is always tasty and the mad cookies...well, since I never have them here and all I have are my memories, they're the bomb. The baristas are always super nice and I always am a bit envious when my husband comes home smelling like coffee; I know he's spent his afternoon at Peets. It's generally crowded and sometimes one has to be a bit assertive around space (some weird interactions) but overall it's a nice environment. If you can take public transit, bike or walk I'd suggest it as the lot can be very busy. read more

First visit to a Peet's in Chicago and it was a good one. I tried the maple latte. I am happy to say that it wasn't overly sweet and had the right touch of maple flavor to it. I was also excited to get a $1 off my drink for checking in on yelp! You can guarantee that you will never get a deal like that at most other coffee chains. This location is really busy, so we had no choice but to take our drinks to go. However, the space is nice enough to grab a table and hangout if you have some work or studying to get done, so get there early if that's your game plan! read more

I was hooked on Major Dickason while working in the Bay Area back in 2013, and keep coming back to purchase the blend ever since. Sadly, several Peet's locations have closed after the acquisition and more so due to fierce market competition, but I'm glad this one survived. The staffs are always friendly and make perfect drink whether that be espresso drink or brewed coffee. I highly recommend Major Dickason especially to those regarded as coffee aficionado! read more

I was in the area buying my high priced prepared meal at whole foods (it is a delicious $10 salad) and really needed coffee. I've been to Peet's only a couple of times. I went in not knowing what to expect. For the most part it looked liked the "old" starbucks used to. With a bean counter and everything! People were friendly, Americano I got was delicious, smokey but not burnt and crema still visible in the water. Yum. I am not a fan of getting my own lids though. Not 'cause I"m lazy, just clumsy. Carrying a beverage at 180-200 degrees to a milk station when you don't need any milk or sugar seems dangerous. For me anyways. Pastry selection was alright, again like old Starbucks. Also I"m not saying that in a mean way. At some point when I worked at Starbucks it was a pretty decent, fun, completely overwhelming and great place to work. Not anymore. That was around 1999-2000. Things got worse by about 2003-4 Oh well. Peet's has a lot of tea wears and coffee wears and even though I don't buy coffee by the lb for myself, it was nice to see an actual bean counter in a cafe. I have to try the coffee here. I've come here and always end up having iced tea. It's not even sweetened, but it's strong. I'm sure it's an indication of how the coffee would be I imagine, just the way I like it. I did try to be adventurous and order this new freddo drink, and it was gross. I let the barista know and she gave me an ice tea on the house and coupon for a free drink. I thought that was really nice, and hope to give this place another chance with a coffee drink. read more
