Went there for lunch today despite some of the recent bad reviews. I called in my order ahead and had no problems. My order was ready to go and everything tasted great. I got my favorite plate which is the mini BBQ chicken, no rice- so you get 3 ban chan side choices. I chose bean sprouts, Kim chi and mayo potatoes. Then I added on side of mandoo which includes 4 pieces and then I ordered a SIDE of rice which was just 1 scoop. I love me some white rice but 1 scoop is good enough for me these days. Go to spot for Meat Jun and Fish Jun. I noticed the Combo Plate for Meat Jun and Fish Jun was just a dollar difference from ordering each plate individually so I chose the Combo. My four sides were Mac Salad, japchae, kimchi and wakame Salad. The whole Plate was excellent. Delicious and very filling. A little over $19 but worth the price for all of that. My fiancé and I came across pearls Korean bbq when we searched meet jun on yelp. The restaurant is located at the Queen Ka'ahumanu center on the second floor, located on top of Starbucks and next to panda express. We ordered the meat jun and chicken barbecue combo, and the meat/fish jun combo. Both combos come with four choices of vegetables, and two scoops of rice. When we got the food, we were surprised on how much it actually came with. The box was packed to the very top and fed our party of five. The fermented vegetables tasted fresh and added a nice touch to the meal. The meat and fish jun tasted just as we thought with the thinly sliced meat cooked to perfection It tasted sweet yet savory along with the soy dipping sauce. I'm giving this restaurant two stars because either the manager or the owner was pretty cheap. To me, service iseverything despite how good the food tastes, whether it's a McDonald's to a Michelin star restaurant. I told him we had a party of five and asked for three small plates to share with my family and he said I can only give you two. Seriously? What's one extra paper plate to your business? I asked for a small cup of ice, and they also charge for that. I do recommend this restaurant to try the meat Jun but don't be surprised of the frugality that the restaurant offers. I love pearls because they give you a lot of food and pretty quick when it's not busy. However, the prices that are displayed on their screens are NOT accurate as of 8/29/2023. I ordered a shrimp plate- advertised at 18.99 (under its picture and on their menu), but was rung up at 19.99. I asked the cashier about it and she showed me that's the price on the register button & apologized that the prices up on the screens are different. I let it go cuz it's only a dollar and not her fault. Just makes me wonder what else is priced wrong and by how much of a difference. I ordered the Kalbi and Chicken Katsu combo plate which comes with which wasn't on the menu. Good thing I asked! It comes with four sides and two scoops of rice. I also added a side of mandoo for 3 bucks more. The plate could barely close it was so heavy with food. The Katsu was crispy and the Kalbi was sweet and savory as expected. I had a ton of leftovers but expect to pay around $25 for a most combo plates. Eating at the mall provides people watching opps and it's always nice to find in the open air under the tented roof. The owner is RUDE. HE HAS ABSOLUTELY NO CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS. HE IS VERY UNPROFESSIONAL, AND HE WOULD NOT GIVE ME HIS NAME WHEN I ASKED FOR HIS NAME. For clarification, I have been a customer of Pearl's for the last 25 years. You become a repeat customer because of the food and service. I LOVE the staff there. The girls are amazing and friendly. Recently, a new owner took over the place. I have always bought the same thing. A BBQ chicken plate or a Meat Jun/BBQ chicken combo. I LITERALLY grab a plate lunch from there at least four times a month. This past week, I happened to go there four days in a row, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and today, Monday. I ordered the same thing each day for a family member, a BBQ chicken plate. There were no problems with the plate on any of the days except today. Today, my order was a bit different. There was a sauce on top of the chicken. Normally this wouldn't be a problem but the person I bought it for does not like sweet foods. So Teriyaki sauce is a no. For people who don't like certain foods, something as small as a sauce can ruin an entire meal. This is also a $20 plate lunch. Anyway, I called the establishment because initially I thought they made a mistake and made me Teriyaki chicken, not BBQ chicken, because of the teriyaki sauce. When I called, I was transferred to the owner and told him what had happened. He proceeds to tell me, "That's not possible because we started putting sauce on it a month ago." Then I told him, "oh well, idk what to say, I've had it these past four days and ordered the exact same meal, and this is the first time there's sauce on the chicken." Mr. Owner got really defensive and said, "no, there was definitely sauce on it every day you came because we've been making it like this for a month already." I tell him again, "Well, im sorry, but there was no sauce these past three days because if there was, I would have asked for no sauce today." MR. OWNER says, "No, there was sauce on it cause I made it myself." I said, "Oh, you did, did you? What time were you there this past weekend, and what days?" .... "Well, I don't know what time it was at!", and I say, "You have no idea what time you were cooking at, but you're so certain that you made my food, "...he says.. "Yeah, I did." Then I ask him what his name is....he tells me, "I'm not giving you my name." I ask again, "You're not going to give me your name?" ... "No, you're not getting my name." It's also not just about what he said. It's how he sounded when he said it. He was very accusatory. MORAL OF THE STORY.... All I really wanted was to be able to let them know and see if i could swap my $20 plate lunch for one the same on I've had all weekend without the sauce *I have pics to prove it. This entire situation was completely blown over. Had the owner been nicer, more professional, apologetic even, and handled the situation like any professional business owner would. It would have been the end of the conversation. Instead, he accused me of lying, got immediately defensive, and didn't offer a solution. If I was the owner I would have said, "I am very sorry you don't like the way we prepped the chicken and I am surprised it wasn't on your order this past weekend when you visited us because we recently changed it up and started applying sauce on it for about a month now." But instead of de-escalating the situation, he accused me of lying, and that is where the problem started. Funny enough, I have pics from this weekend's order after getting home and separating the food, putting my mom's portion in a container for later, and sending her a pic to show her. I like coming to Pearls BBQ located in the Queen Kaahumanu Center upstairs in the food court. It's newly renovated. They have different varieties of Korean/Local plate lunches. If you order a regular it's huge enough for two to share. It comes with 4 choices for your sides. If you order a mini it cones with two choices for sides, it's still a lot to eat. The girls working the front counter are always friendly which is always a plus with me. Place your order choose your sides and wait on the side for your foods to be made. The chicken katsu is always yummy. So is the kalbi plate. You can do a chicken katsu/kalbi combo. Some of the sides are tofu, green salad, pasta, corn, bean sprouts, kimchee, seaweed, potatoes prepared two different ways and of course mac salad. read more

Come to find out, Pearl's is owned by Peter Kim, who also owns the Yummy Korean BBQ chain. Not sure why the name changed years ago at this location as the Yummy name still exists on Oahu. Oh well, as long as the food is still the same! He also owns Liliha Bakery and Lahaina Chicken Company. While Pearl's serves some everyday local dishes that are widely available elsewhere such as hamburger steak and chicken katsu, I choose to come here due to their delicious banchan (side dishes) selections. Why settle for just a scoop mac salad at L&L when you can get 3 more choices here? And the portions are almost twice as big. Hell yeah! ATMOSPHERE: The QKC food court location underwent a total makeover last year, sporting new TV menu screen, and a fresh, updated look. Great job! MY FAVORITES: BBQ Pork - The insanely tender, marinated and lightly barbecued slices of boneless pork just melts in your mouth. The takeout tray is lined with steamed rice, then the grill-hot pork is laid out on top with all of its drippings soaking into the rice. Ahhhh! Then there's the 4 banchans you add to the dish. My favorites are the macaroni salad, bean sprouts, and potato mayonnaise. Huge portion! Chicken Katsu - Geezuz, this is probably the biggest plate lunch in the state! 2 to 3 huge pieces of breaded chicken were perfectly deep-fried and sat on a bed of rice with my usual 4 banchans surrounding it. I have a good appetite, but this turned out into 2 separate meals for me. That's how I like it as I hate small portions! As for the katsu sauce, I always use the Kagome brand bottled sauce as NO ONE does katsu sauce like them. Pearl's version is too tangy for me. Hamburger Steak - This one sorta doesn't belong under "my favorites" as my biggest complaint is that the onions that top the dish are raw. Yuck. I'm sure if I ask they can at least grill them a little. The rubbery patties I can deal with especially since I can get 4 choices of banchan, lol! Fried Chicken - Compared to their other dishes, this one was pretty small in portion size with just 8 pieces of chicken wings (4 wingettes and 4 drummettes.) They're not battered or floured yet were fried perfect and had a nice subtle & savory flavor. SERVICE: The staff are always friendly and welcoming. The food is fresh, so there will be a wait. I always call in my order and it's ready in 10 minutes. TIPS: Half portion sizes are available if you're not a pig like me. But then you'll only get 2 choices of banchan, lol. A second Pearl's location will be opening up in the Maui Marketplace food court sometime in 2016! Yes! The side vegetables did not taste that great. The cucumbers were a bit too sour for me and the other vegetables didn't have much flavor to them. I ordered a chicken katsu curry and I figured it would be done rather quickly in like 10-15 minutes. I ordered around 215 ish and I had to leave around 240 to get back to work from my lunch so I went away without even eating! All of the workers just stood there, as well as the manager. Horrible customer service. I probably will still go there because it's pretty ono, though I walked away extremely disappointed. Which is also going to take forever. I had to wait almost 30 minutes for one meat jun combo plate. ONE. One plate. Worst of all (and this was my biggest gripe), there were absolutely NO apologies or anything for the inconvenience. Kinda disappointed because this has always been our choice to eat at when we go to the food court at the mall. I can see a worker accidentally giving someone the wrong plate and apologizing to the customer about it. I wouldve been fine with that but the customer service was pretty bad and it seemed to be a pain for the girls to have to get my vegetable choices again. The food here is pretty good, ordered the chicken, short ribs, and pork, each is served with 4 sides of your choosing. All the entrees were actually good, especially for this being "mall" food. Nothing was dry and they were all well flavored. Sides: all three types of kimchee were good, the macaroni salad was not good, WAY too much mayo, the baked sweet potatoes were my favorite, the noodles were pretty good, the corn was okay, had a couple of other sides too, they were also okay.
