We had been going here for years... The new ownership has assured that we will never be back. Jacked up the prices without any notice and then told me, "good luck finding anywhere else" when I said I'd just give our doodle a bath elsewhere and comeback for the costly haircut in a few weeks. So sad. The previous employees and management were so kind and wonderful to our dog. read more

Wish I could rate ZERO stars. Do not bring your dog here. New owner is EXTREMELY rude and unprofessional. Every negative review of her on here is SPOT ON. read more

I have been one of the oldest and most loyal customers of Paws A While - with two dogs almost 20 years. No more. It appears its under new management and the new staff are clueless. I brought my dog in for a haircut and had a lengthly conversation with the person who accepted my dog. When I picked him up, no haircut. Further, my dog - who has been serviced at Paws A While for years - acted scared to death when I picked him up. Oddly, the establishment is usually packed with dogs and groomers. Yet when I went there, only one groomer and one dog. Clearly, I'm not the only one who has seen the change. The old crew were wonderful and highly professional - the new management is a disaster. Steer clear of this place - it has hit rock bottom! read more

This is the first review I've ever written but I felt it was important to share my experience. I have three rescue dogs - two pugs and a little pug mix and these dogs are my everything. I brought my pups over to Paws A While because it was close and because my mother in law has been bringing her little pup there too for a few years. I had heard that her dog had a serious reaction to a shampoo once and couldn't open his eyes the next morning but thought this could have been an unexpected allergy. It was extremely difficult to get anyone on the phone to book the appointment. I called and called and called one day and got nothing. I left a message and didn't get a call back. The next day I tried calling and finally was able to book an appt. The owner was friendly enough and fit all three dogs in that week and I was very appreciative. Dropped the dogs off and everyone seemed happy. I came back at 4 to pick them up and was told that the owner had sliced my dog's foot pad with her scissors but she was "fine" and "no longer bleeding". Mind you no one bothered to call me when it happened, warn me to bring bandages or a towel for my car, or just prepare me before I got there. Dealing with three dogs on a hot day is no walk in the park and I was just in a hurry to pay and get them loaded up in the car. I never thought at the time to ask for a discount. Her foot was not bandaged and no big shock started bleeding again in the car. I didn't notice immediately so it got in my car, all over my couches at home, and on our white furry throw blanket. To add insult to injury, neither of the pugs had their ears cleaned and they were coated in wax. My husband called the owner to say that we don't feel we should pay for the dog that was injured (I was offered NO discount whatsoever at the time I paid) because now we have the cost of cleaning both couches and the dry cleaning of the blanket (also note we didn't ask for her to pay for the cleaning just refund the grooming fee). The owner's response was that mistakes happen and that was that. The best she could do was a discount on a future appt. AS IF WE WOULD EVER EVER EVER COME BACK!!! I totally understand that mistakes happen but we shouldn't have to pay over $300 for your mistakes. A simple phone call and a bandage or better grooming skills could have prevented all of this and a nicer, more apologetic attitude would have gone a lone way too. I felt almost as if she was spitting in our faces. It was so offensive. I feel like I'm a kind and reasonable person and I understand the plight of people that work with animals and that accidents DO happen but you couldn't pay me to have another interaction with Connie or Paws A While. Save yourself the trouble and find a more pleasant and competent groomer. read more

We were long time clients with Paws a While from the original owner, Connie (incredible groomer!) to the second owner Christine (overall wonderful!). Unfortunately Christine moved and there was an ownership change back in October/November and the new owner made no attempt to introduce himself to the clients until just this past week (early March). They did however find the time to send out a price increase email in December that had no mention of new ownership! I was willing to give the new owner a chance just as I did when Christine took over. When he came out to introduce himself as the new owner I was understandably surprised. Throughout our conversation he admitted he had no grooming experience and made excuses as to why he did not think it was necessary to reach out to the clients months ago when he purchased the business. Apparently he did not want to deal with so many emails and phone calls. I found him to be very arrogant and totally lacking in customer service. I still was willing to give them a shot so I let them groom my dogs that day and made sure they knew to use a special medicated shampoo that I gave them during my last visit for one of my pups. When I picked up my babies they looked fine but when I asked for my bottle of medicated shampoo to take home to use they admitted they did not have it anymore and ended up using their own shampoo that day. They did not bother to call me or anything. Now my dogs skin is flaky and his hair is falling out from it not being treated properly. Needless to say I will never bring my dogs here again. It's very sad to see a business that had a tremendous reputation for years suddenly go downhill. Hopefully the new owner will realize that customer service is essential for a business that charges almost $100 for a cut. read more

I was really looking forward to having my 5 year old lab Rozzie groomed at Paws Awhile. I happened in there once waiting for my car to be serviced at the local Toyota dealer. I poked my head in, met the owner, she was nice, place looked nice so I asked while I was there, might they trim Rozzie's nails, they did ... all good. Fast forward to a charity event the other week where my wife and I saw a silent auction item from Paws A While. It was 2 gift certificates valued at $50.00 each (2 groomings). I wanted it so bad, we put in a bid amount of $90.00 and 'won it'. Earlier this week I called and made a reservation to have Roz groomed the next day. I asked how long the session would take, they said a couple of hours. So I brought her there on time and dropped her off (and re-confirmed with the girl at the front how long it would take ..." a couple of hours"... After 2.5 hours I called and said I was heading over, and how are things going? I was put on hold, then the person got back on and said could they have Roz stay there for another 2.5 hours! Now some may feel this is no big deal, in fact maybe the clientele who go there may dump their dogs off and go shopping or something, but I didn't have another 2.5 hours. I asked 'well is she at least in the midst of the grooming'? They said they had not even got to her yet... and their reasons: Sorry but this is a Very Busy Time of year, The Dogs Ahead of Roz Had Real Complicated Cuts & Treatments AND, that they Had Many Unexpected Walk-Ins! I asked don't they prioritize reservations? They had no answer. I was pretty much shocked that they expected me to leave my dog there for 5 hours. So I went and picked Roz up and when I went in, the owner didn't so much as glance at me, she was hunched over some schnauzer or something attending to one of those 'complicated cuts' like it was some stately topiary on the White House lawn. All I said to the people there was that this was supposed to be a gift certificate donated by them to benefit a good cause and that they could keep that one plus the other $50 certificate because I'm never coming back. No one there even attempted to assuage me e.g., "I'm terribly sorry Jon, what can we do to win back your confidence, we really messed up on our scheduling today and we don't want to lose you as a customer"... the owner just ignored me, probably thought "Oh well we screwed up this one and just move on".... Look, I don't like blaming businesses on Yelp, but a small business owner has to be smart enough to manage their flow of business. They very easily could have said the day I made the 'reservation' that (1) This is an extremely busy time of year, can we hold off until after the Holidays to redeem your first gift certificate? (2) Are you OK with leaving your pet here as long as say 5+ hours?... I'm glad to see that Paws A While has such a great following, and I hate to be a spoiler (and probably no one cares anyway, certainly not the owner). I guess the owner felt 'Ya win some ya lose some' ... About the only good thing is that the $90.00 I bid on the Paws A While grooming 'gift' went to a very good cause, a local dog rescue group and I hope my $90.00 can help some furry little buddy... read more

My fiance and I had a negative experience with a local groomer, so I spent some time researching other options--Paws A While came up and we couldn't be more happy with the choice that we made! We have a 1 year old Goldendoodle who needs pretty regular haircuts as he gets matted quickly--we brought him in for a full service and not only did we love the haircut, but he clearly had fun playing all morning in the cage-free environment. The staff was very communicative, eager to help, and friendly--I felt very comfortable leaving our pup with them. Highly recommend! read more

I interviewed them on the phone and they seemed so caring telling me to bring a personal clothing item for my dog to curl up with to feel more at home and a toy, his food and any treats. However, when I picked my dog up they gave me his back his bag of those things and the toy was in the bottom and the shirts were still folded like I left them. He was not given one treat or one morsel of his dog food. $55 dollars a day for boarding for which there is no open outdoor area for them to play in only a parking lot. I have never written a negative review before but this was my dog they neglected. I must be fair though, he got a haircut during his stay and he did look good, although, they were running late with him and I saw the woman cutting his hair and she was rough and not friendly to him and he was just standing there shaking scared. Please be careful. read more

This is my new fav place in the South Bay. They are friendly and professional, which is hard to find these days. I also really like that there are lifts for the animals. My dog is big, around 80 lbs. I've taken him places and they lift him by his collar and back legs into a waist high bath tub. It's not the end of the world, but I don't want my dog treated like that. I love watching him step onto the lift, and be slowly brought up to grooming height. read more

To be clear - this shop in under new ownership. Most of the high ratings are from when Connie Killen owned the shop. She no longer owns the shop, nor does she work there. I do not recommend under the current management!! I hate to write a negative review, but I think you all should know. The previous owner Connie and her team were great. We had been going there since 1994. Three "big" dogs. They had great customer service with a smile and excellent grooming, totally accommodating if on a rare occasion ( maybe a few times in 20+years ) the grooming may not have been what I expected. The new management is dismissive and rude and the grooming is not close to being up to par. I tried to make it work, but in the end we found a new groomer on Highland and Marine ave. So happy we made the switch. read more

Yikes!!! New owner jacked up the prices a lot!! $105 to groom my wheaten terrier + $15 for tangles means I just paid $120 to have my dog groomed. I miss Connie, the original owner! After 17 years of dogs being groomed here, I'll find a new groomer! read more

Paws A While was recommended overwhelming via Next Door so we went for nail trimming. Ms. Katrina is fantastic! She took our very nervous rescue dog & carefully trimmed the nails with a smoothing running Dremel & the nails came out perfect & our rescue & us had a great experience! Highly recommended! We also saw the wonderful cageless day care biz they operate. We'll definitely be back! read more

Amazing and talented groomers. Very loving with the dogs. I am a very picky dog owner and bring my dog weekly for grooming. Since I recently moved to the South Bay I tried a few other places and nothing compares to them! Christine has amazing energy as do the other staff members. read more

Not easy to work with and not patient with dogs who are nervous. Staff is rude and unfriendly.

Had the worst experience. They are the most unprofessional company I've dealt with in a long time. Went in there for a basic grooming and came back to find out they charged us an extra $110 for Matt removal. I understand that there should be a charge for this but the customer should have a choice and they went ahead and did it without telling us. Where we would've probably shave the dog at a much cheaper price since it's summer. I warn everyone that wants to take the risk by going there to ask and tell them you want to know any extra charges. Looks like we're going back to the other two groomers we used to use that were far better anyway and Honest . You've been warned !! read more

DON'T TAKE YOUR PET TO PAWS A WHILE. I'm a dog walker in Manhattan Beach and watch two small dogs and would take them to Paws A While weekly. They were okay until the new owner Sherry came along. The first bad instance we had involved the dogs nail being trimmed way to short he couldn't walk and it was bleeding. We didn't know what was wrong at first so we called to ask if anything happened and they kept denying they could have done anything. Sure enough the nail was way to short. They then raised the price to $65 each for a bath and $100 each plus for grooming for two small dogs....they also failed to tell me about the price change until checkout. My biggest issue with Sherry is she is insanely rude, unwelcoming and acts like she doesn't like dogs. The two dogs bark a lot because they don't like going to the groomers and she would always roll her eyes. I then proceeded to check the Yelp reviews and I saw everyone felt the same way as I did. It's a shame what she has done to Paws A While and I sure hope she goes out of business so no one has to go thru what any of us have gone thru. read more

STAY AWAY FROM NEW OWNER. I am so sad to write this review. I have been a loyal customer for years here bringing both of my dogs to Paws Awhile regularly and have always appreciated their work and fantastic service. The management must have changed recently because when I came in for a routine bath for my pup, the usual staff was not there and much less equipment all around. Also the woman who was working the register and check in on 12/ 18/ 21 in the morning changed the price I've been paying for the past year from $45 for a 10 lb dog TO $135. There was no communication about the 300 PERCENT PRICE INCREASE when I made the reservation and she changed the price on me as I was checking my pup in. Furthermore when we picked my pup up, she tried charging us $200. It felt like doggie ransom. Unfortunately, we will not be going back ever again. Given what I've read from the other reviews, it sounds like the same underhanded treatment from the new owner to many others. I hope someone reports her bad business behavior to the Business Bureau asap! read more

I'm so happy we found this place! I live in the area and have long wondered about Paws A While's grooming and boarding services. On Saturday morning, I called to see if they had any availability for my pup to come in for a bath and the owner, Christine told me to come on by. I brought in my best friend who was THRILLED to find that she could just hang out behind the counter rather than be crated while waiting her turn (check out that smile!) A little later in the afternoon, Christine called to let me know that my Beans (aka Layla Mae) was ready to be picked up. She was sweet and took the time to tell me how well my pup tolerated her bath, got along with everyone, etc. We will definitely be back for a bath and maybe even some daycare days for fun. Thank you, Christine! read more

I had a good experience here, mind you we didn't leave our dogs here for more than 4 hours. We had our home treated for pests and we were told that we had to have the dogs out of the house for no less than 2 hours. The wash and cut were fine. It's a small facility and it would be nice if they had an out door area, but in this area I think we're lucky just to have this. They took my dogs for a walk while they were there and we would bring them back, but not for long stays. Good Luck. read more

This business' management has changed and sadly I have to say the new manager, a woman called Sherry is exactly how everyone describes her below. My puppy had a long beautiful long fur and brought him for a trim.... and she completely shaved him without notice. I mean, I can see his pink skin now. But that was not the problem; at the end of the day, hair grows back. Thing is when I expressed my surprise and enquired about such extreme decision she started shouting at me like a mad person. She insulted me screaming and saying I didn't deserve my dog, that no one, not even vets, know dogs better than she does, etc etc. During our convo over the phone I had already felt there was something off about her, but it's when I picked up my dog that it was evident to anyone she has some mental problems and probably shouldn't be running a business like this. I don't mean to be disrespectful out of frustration: mental health is a serious thing and people with issues deserve compassion and have the right to make a living too, but I'm just trying to warn you as a customer. You may not have to experience something like this if everything goes smoothly, but sooner or later you'll be trapped in a very uncomfortable situation the day your dog has any problem at this place or you are not satisfied. I'll take mine to any other place next time. read more

If it was possible to rate the new ownership a 0, I would do so. I just came from having a HORRIBLE encounter with the new owner Sherry. I have been taking my 10 year old frenchie Clyde to Pawsawhile his entire life. I also took my Boston who is no longer with us and even my dog before that! Both Christine and the owners before her were absolutely wonderful with dogs and their owners. Clyde loved it there. I was shocked to find out that Sherry had thrown away all the shampoos that the previous owners held for us without any notice. I do understand that being a new policy but her arrogance in the way she spoke was astonishing. I was obviously annoying her by asking questions and trying to communicate certain procedures that I was used to...like simply being texted when Clyde was ready to be picked up. I was told that "there is no more THEY...that she is the new owner and this is how she does things!" She became confrontational when I tried to give her more information about Clyde. She ended by telling me that "She didn't want my dog...that she only wants to be around good humans and I am obviously not a good person." Normally I would have responded in kind, but was in shock. I very rarely write bad reviews, actually any reviews, but felt it necessary as she is tarnishing the good name that Christine, Connie, Irene, and their wonderful staff have built. After reading these multiple reviews about her treatment of dogs, Clyde is fortunate to not have been left in her care. read more

I went in to check the place out since my dog isn't the most fond of men and I wanted to make sure that there were plenty of ladies there who could groom him. Everyone in there was so nice and welcoming to Trooper. They were aware of Trooper's hesitancy towards men and they were patient with him. I've taken Trooper there for daycare and grooming. He's always timid at first around new dogs and people, but like I said, the staff is very kind and patient with him and allow him to warm up on his own terms. I recently took him to get groomed and we had a timeline. I had already called and made a reservation and dropped him off around 11:15a on a Saturday morning. We had somewhere to be at 2:45p. They originally quoted me 2-3p but once I told them we had to be somewhere else, they were able to get him in all cleaned up and groomed and ready to go by 2p. I think this is a great local establishment. They really care for their clients and are always happy to be around animals. read more

We started taking our big dogs here in the fall of 2020. Typically, our dogs dislike going to the groomer. When we go to PawsAWhile, they rush to the door so they can go have their spa day! Our dogs smell amazing and feel great after their visits. They take a lot of care to treat our older dog well during her grooming. The staff is also super safe during COVID. When you arrive outside, they will greet you at the outdoor gate and will take the dogs into the building for their treatments. Every employee we've interacted with has been super kind and sweet with the dogs. read more

Took my 6 month old doodle puppy in for a Tidy and was hit with a bill for $195. They charged an extra $110 for de-matting. I was never called or texted regarding the extra de-matting charge. I was never given a choice of de-matting or shaving my dog. When I told them I never had a choice they said the de-matting fee is clearly online. That was not the point . I'm aware of their de-matting fee and again I WAS NOT called or informed that my dog had lots of Mat's until the bill came. If they are going to de- mat your dog they need to inform their client before proceeding to do so. I would have elected to Shave my dog and spare the Expense. Very disappointed in their professionalism read more

It has taken me a couple months to calm down to write this review. I have been taking my Maltese here for a few years now and have always been very happy, until my most recent visit. I always drop my dog off in the am and pick him up late in the day after work and this has never been a problem. About 2 months ago, after I dropped my dog off I received a phone call around 11 am letting me know that I needed to pick up my dog within an hour as they were closing early. I was already in Anaheim for a work meeting and was extremely frustrated that I would have to hurry back to Hermosa to pick up my dog. When I explained my situation to the woman on the phone her response was, "Well its not my fault, the owner is making us close early because we had a few cancellations. You need to be here by 1 pm to pick up your dog. Don't you have someone that can come and get him for you?" Well I am not sure who she is referring to but no, I do not have a butler nor an assistant. I have a job and they have posted hours of operation. I asked her why she didn't tell me they were closing early when I dropped off my dog? and she told me that they had just decided. When I arrived to pick up my dog, I was expecting an apology. But alas, no apology. What I got was more attitude. Her EXACT words were, "Why should I apologize? I didn't do anything wrong." How about an apology for the inconvenience and the time and gas wasted? I mentioned that I was in the hospitality industry and her response was, "maybe the owner should hire you to come and train us on hospitality then!" Seeing that this conversation was going nowhere, I told her that I was very unhappy and that I wanted to speak to the owner before I paid. I asked her to have the owner call me if she wanted me back as a customer..... I guess I have my answer. read more

It's so rare to find a business that so clearly cares about their customers. Paws A While goes above and beyond! I've been bringing my dogs here for a couple years now. They are always a pleasure to deal with and remember the details of each animals needs. When my older dog passed, they took the time to send a personal note, and as my other one is now a senior, they are considerate of all of his unique health needs. My dog loves to go there and always leaves looking great and happy as can be. I have tried many dog grooming services in the area. None compare! read more

Connie is a great groomer and a really nice gal but her office person is so rude. She acts as though they are doing you a favor for taking your dog. The place is clean and all of the animals are out in the open so you know what's going on. My dogs were never stressed out. However, this place is significantly more expensive compared to other groomers. I could over look the cost if I was treated well when I went in. I guess I was always so thankful that they treated my dogs well that I figured I could handle the rude and indifferent behavior. But then I found another place that treats my dogs and me well and they are cheaper. read more

Took my golden retriever Titan there for a summer cut today. It was the best summer cut I have seen him have yet. Dropped him off around 9:30 and picked him up around 3:30pm. I loved that the dogs were able to roam around the shop. The employees were very nice and he looked good afterwards. The parking in the back was very convenient as well. He came back a thirsty but that was probably because he can be a bit of a water snob:) For the summer cut and grooming it was $130. read more

We have been taking our dogs to Paws-a-While for grooming for about 25 years now, and have always been very pleased with the quality of the dog grooming and the service we receive there. The shop owner, Connie, is a very experienced, skillful groomer who knows how to bring out the best in our bichon frise. Not only that, but he clearly loves to go there -- he actually pulls me toward the door of the shop once I get him out of the car. That says a lot about Connie and her staff, and the friendly, caring atmosphere they create there. Whenever I pick up our dog at the shop after his grooming, I have the opportunity to see the "after" view of the other breeds (dogs of all shapes and sizes) that come to Paws-a-While for grooming, and have always been impressed with how beautiful they look too. read more

I am very disappointed that I picked up my dog today and she had a visible stripe down her back from an obvious error made by the groomer. When I pointed this out I was told that the "guard came off" and I could bring her back later in the week when her fur had grown out a bit and she could use a special comb to make it look better. How about an apology and some acknowledgement that something had gone wrong? When I went to the register and was about to be charged $94 I said "really?" and the manager (?owner?) said "okay she's right I guess we can give her half off". Again how about saying that you'd made a mistake and apologize? When I got home I found another nick on my dog's leg and I wonder why that wasn't pointed out to me. I wonder if someone was training to be a groomer and my dog was chosen to practice on? Totally unprofessional on so many levels. read more

Amazing amazing amazing!! Words can not express how incredible the services and people are who work at Paws a While. I am beyond humbled and moved by the way my animals were cared for. I have 2 rescue animals with extremely unique temperaments. In fact my chow chow mix has never even entered a boarding facility as well dog grooming facility without being asked to leave. She was not only happy at Paws for a While but she even seemed content immediately which is a first for her! This had me humbled and feeling extremely at ease knowing my dogs were in such great hands. The owner is beyond the kindest most hospitable dog loving person. She is SO great with all animals. I was stunned by how much she loved both of my pets equally as if they were her own. And trust me, that says it all! I picked my dogs up and they looked fantastic and smelled clean from their bath. At first they were so happy I almost wondered if they wanted to stay longer. I'm not kidding. Each day knowing my dogs were in the excellent care of Paws a While was another day I could enjoy myself knowing my animals were not only safe but happy and loved. Anyone giving this place anything less than 5 stars is most certainly incurring bad karma or are simply a miserable grinch. I can't say one negative about this establishment-except I'm not an easy person to please regarding my pets. I was not only pleased but feel blessed and beyond grateful. My animals are my everything. Knowing that I can drop them off here when I leave from LAX is not only so convenient but also a breath of fresh air. A million thanks to this incredible establishment.
