    What an amazing place to enjoy a great meal while being surrounded by a warm and eclectic beautiful atmosphere complete with fireplace bar and historic ambiance in the heart of historic Wolfeboro.

    We had great expectations, but were very disappointed. My wife and I have 20 years of experience with the various restaurants in Wolfeboro, and were very excited to try the much vaunted Pavilion. Our excitement was unfortunately not met with a happy experience. We had reservations for the evening. On opening the second door to the entrance, we were shocked by the loudness. I mean LOUDness. As in a Southie sports bar at night when the Bruins are winning Not from music, but just voices. The hostess brought us to our table in the second room. The loudness of conversation around us was deafening to the point that my wife and I could barely hear one another across the table. The hostess asked "Would you like sparkling water or town water?" (Filtered) plain water is apparently not an option. Our server introduced herself and was very pleasant. She bent down close and politely yelled something unintelligible about the menu that she gave us. She too, was very aware of the incredible din. I ordered drinks; a Tangueray martini, straight up, extra dry for my wife, and a Makers Manhattan for myself. "We don't have Makers, but we have bla, bla, bla, and bla, instead". In decades of eating out from Ossipee to Boston, to Lisbon, Portugal, I was never told a bar didn't have Makers Mark bourbon. I drink Makers, not bla. When the drinks arrived in nice, teensie, weanstie stemmed glasses, filled 3/4ths, we were very disappointed. My Manhattan was just ok, but certainly not Makers. My bride's martini was just plain aweful. Flowery bouquet. Yuck. She sent it back, explaining the issues, but only got another just like it. Another teensie weanstie yucky martini. Bartenders of repute go to school on making good martinis in their varied subtleties, and understand the unique differences. One thing that's imperative for any call martini is Noily Prat vermouth. It's just the way it's done. Apparently, this bartender missed that class. Flowery. Yuck. At least four other restaurants in Wolfeboro serve up absolutely great drinks, double in size, for much less money. I chose a breadcrumb topped oyster appetizer, which was cooked to perfection, but very, very salty. Displeasingly so. "How is your food so far?" "Salty", said I. No offer was made to replace my dish. My wife chose bread. As an appetizer, along with a dollop of butter, for $5.00 Other restaurants in Wolfeboro and elsewhere place bread on the table at no charge, and more if requested, at no charge, and with plenty of butter, not a stingy ball. By this time in our very short few minutes, we were getting a very unfortunate feeling about this highfalutin joint that everyone raves about. Did we just get a new chef, or is this the norm? Then, we ordered our main courses. My wife ordered the roasted chicken, and I ordered the duck leg confit. Both dishes were incredibly salty. My wife and I tend to like salty food, so for us to say food is too salty, it's extremely so. Both dishes were also very heavily herbal, masking the delicate chicken flavor, and obliterating the duck flavor. We both cook with lots of herbs, so for us to say the food is heavy on the herbs, it's exceptionally so. All this time, we were annoyed by the disturbing din of loud conversations around us, bouncing off hard walls, floors and ceilings that completely dashed any hopes we harbored for a special, peaceful, serene evening out. Finally, we ordered one rhubarb dessert to share. Our waitress placed it between us. My wife asked for individual plates and forks. She returned with one plate, and one fork. So, we shared our one fork. The dessert was delicious, but the ice cream atop it was exactly a paltry 1.5" diameter, 1 ounce, perfectly round sphere. With reservations, I grant 1.5 stars, but must round up the 2. My wife's yucky teensie weanstie martini cost $12.00 plus $3.00 for drinks with extra alcohol, plus $1.00 for extra dry (extra dry means less vermouth, not more), for a total of $16.00. Ditto for my bla Manhattan. Have you ever heard of surcharges for cocktails with extra alcohol? I hope this isn't a new trend. The Pavilion knows how to pad a bill! Any number of places in Wolfeboro offer better, quieter dining at better prices, with far better food, and all have much better and more generous drinks at quite lower prices. Yes, we know it gets rave reviews, but that was not at all our unfortunate experience. We will not return and cannot possibly recommend the Pavilion.

    We've been waiting to try this restaurant since the beginning of the build out! The food and service did not disappoint! Chris was a fantastic ambassador guiding us through the experience. We started with the smoked chicken wings. They were crispy and the ranch was amazing. This will be a must have for every visit! Next we enjoyed the slow roasted beets. The combination of blood orange, fried goat cheese and the beet was wonderful. I do wish though that there was more orange and goat cheese. For our entree we enjoyed the short rib, shiitake mushrooms and zaatar carrots. This truly was the perfect bite! The short rib is exceptional. We closed out the dinner with valrhona chocolate and the butterscotch budino. Both were unique but the perfect finale to our meal. We will be back! Highly recommend!

    The service was just ok. Lots of confusion about the menu, delays in being seated, and for food to arrive. The food was fantastic, however.

    Just dined here for our anniversary. This is a 5 star restaurant if I have ever been to one. Food is unbelievably good in every way. Service was top notch. I had the ribeye and my wife had the halibut. Could not say enough good things about the experience.

The first thing we noticed when we walked in the door was that Christmas smacked us in the face with the best smelling Christmas Tree candle , burning in a super cute entryway. I could hardly wait to get inside to see what else this place had in store. First, there was a fireplace and a couch and a table. In the rest of the dining area, we're all high tops. Not so high that a barely over 5 foot person such as myself couldn't sit comfortably. Our waitstaff (there were two) and were great about offering menu suggestions when I shared flavor profiles I might be looking for and they were attentive and so pleasant. They had super cute Christmas decorations, and were putting up more while we were there. The vibe is super warm and welcoming, and for a short while you feel like you stepped back in time. The tiramisu martini was delicious, as was the blood orange martini. I had the cauliflower with juju sauce at the recommendation of the waitress, and it was honestly the best cauliflower I've ever had! My husband enjoyed his macaroni and cheese with buffalo and bleu as well. The owner/chef, Leslie, came and chatted with us for a little bit before we were on our way. We learned that in the summer they hold concerts, and they have a golf course. There is a distillery on site as well. Everything about this place was excellent, and we are already planning a day date to go back and try more menu items!

Via Vecchia was definitely worth the wait, and this was one of the most surprising restaurants during our trip. We ordered the brussel sprouts, grilled octopus, campanelle, and radiatori. The brussel sprouts was the one dish that I was most hesitant about, seeing that it was paired with a blueberry agrodolce. Not a typical combination, but this ended up being a favorite. The sweetness & tartness of the sauce worked SO well with the sprouts - it's an excellent dish. The octopus had the perfect char, and all of the flavor pairings were really cohesive. I had never heard of either of the pastas, but I loved the textures of both. The campanelle with nduja cream was delicious, but did get to be a little heavy about halfway through. Radiatori with bolognese was a classic but well executed dish. Service is attentive without being overbearing. Prices are super reasonable.

What did bother me was that despite the fact the place was mostly open, they sat everyone right next to, practically on top of eachother, and this definitely made things feel less intimate and more like a crappy Applebees. I made a reservation and we were seated right away after we entered the restaurant. Our table was situated on the first floor so the area was small but we had enough space between table to have a private conversation. I started out with salmon tartare and it was my least favorite of all. I found the pita to taste somewhat stale and I ended up not eating it. Salmon was good but I did not find that cream cheese added to the dish. It might be a matter of personal preference but I wished I started out with something else from the menu. My shrimp scampi was delicious and I would come back for this dish. Pasta and sauce were great and shrimp were a nice size. I then went with the beef stew. I found the pastry to be somewhat salty but it balanced with the stew that was slightly underseasoned. Maybe it was intended to be that way. It was a decent dish overall. I loved the strawberry panna cotta. Their rhubarb chutney was beautiful and the dish was a great way to end my meal. I would come back to this restaurant in the future to try out their regular menu.

    So, we finally got to try the chef's table, or "Chef's Whim" as it's officially titled. Eight…read morecourses. In addition to the food, we added the suggested alcohol pairings. I say alcohol because it wasn't all wine but ... since it's a bit of a surprise in terms of what actually appears I'll just leave it at that. However, as to the food ... I'll give a taste, a flavor, a wisp of a whisper of the full culinary adventure. For complete details, see your local sous chef! Here's what we had. In the middle of my photo collage, a blood sausage slider with fennel/jalapeño sauce on toasted brioche bun. Then clockwise from top left - cornbread with maple glaze in a Barbie sized personal cast iron skillet; beet salad with goat cheese half spheres; a dessert tray of black apple cake with hay ice cream (yes, seriously), chamomile pot de creme and a duck fat beignet; an assortment of ice creams - fenugreek, fennel/maitake mushroom/burnt hazelnut (all tasted fabulous and in each you could taste the listed flavors); entree of duck and wild mushroom tart; white bean soup and finally a pasta dish of ravioli with two fillings. Just a note on what it would take to make it yourself. See that hexagonal white blob on the bottom row, middle pic? That's a potato foam. Forgive me for not recalling the full procedure but the prep is roughly 7 hours long. First, the cut potatoes are cooked in a sous vide for 2 hours so that no moisture is added to them. Then a succession of ricing, smoking, drying, undrying, mashing, placing in a foam machine that looked like a whipped cream dispenser and boom - a tiny dollop of potato. It tasted great. But man - that's a lot of effort for a mouthful of potato. I don't think I'll be trying it at home. Over two hours of eating and chatting. I brought a couple of my restaurant-based cartoons as my personal thanks for the meal and was shocked that Justin, their sommelier, had done a cartoon of his own ahead of time for me! Just stick to wine, Justin - I don't need any MORE competition with my magazine editors ... With Dylan ably providing the primary chef duties and Amaya and Justin handling the booze, the meal was a smashing success. The food pairings were masterfully chosen and timing of the dishes meant we were always primed for the next one. Although the succession of what I'd call dessert dishes made me start to feel like a Hobbit enjoying dessert, second dessert and then post seconds. As Anton Ego said in Ratatouille (and they have a cute Reme rat under glass on a shelf) "I shall be returning, hungry for more."

Service was great, oh I forgot to mention I had the duck confit and it was better than the duck confit at the popular French bistro in my hometown. I wish this restaurant were close by to my home - I would go there at least once a week. Unfortunately we were just visiting the area. I can highly recommend this place. Were there any flaws? The only thing I can point to is that the environment is a little bit loud. Otherwise, no flaws. I regret that I didn't take any photos of the food, which I usually do. Honestly the stuff was so good that once it hit the table we just dug in!
