What a perfect location. We visited Catalina last week and had the pleasure of staying in the recently renovated Pavilion Hotel. It was lovely, very beachy feel which I love. It was clean, comfortable, relaxing and very convenient. The rooms are small but well put together. From the room color scheme and decor, showers and shampoo dispensers, chilled water station and free reusable water bottle, complimentary beach towels, tropical feel, and location it was exactly what a family of four with two busy boys needed. I love the outdoor space and the fact that the hotel is open, not enclosed. It has a clean and cozy beach vibe. Will definitely be coming back and stay longer next time. read more

Have been coming here since the 70's. Actually worked at the St Catherine Hotel as a 13- 16 year old, so I'm quite immersed in the Avalon vibe. Had numerous stays at the Inn at Mt Ada and Pavillion over the last decades, but have found that the location of The Pavillion was it's big plus. The main issue over the last twenty years, is the Catalina Island Company taking the Avalon charm out and replacing it int a cash cow. Late in 2024, The Pavillion shut down for an overhaul, didn't reopen until April 1st of 2026. We were anxious to check out the improvements, but we're sadly disappointed. They DID upgrade the rooms to a certain extent, but increased the room charge to $100.00 + per night. They previously had a great breakfast included, along with an evening wine hour. The "breakfast" is now rolls, coffee, juice and cereal. The evening wine is restricted to one glass, closely monitored. They have a wine machine if u choose to pay an additional charge. From the increase in rates to the minimal extras, the hotel has definitely gone down hill. It's a small town with limited hotels in good locations, so you have to be content for getting price gouged for less services or go to the inner part of town and loose the waterfront charm. By the way, their reconstruction crew did a terrible job. The front door and sliders didn't work well. The sliders didn't lock, out of alignment and the entry door needed two hands to try forcing entry. Look forward to their response. read more

I confidently believe that the Pavilion Hotel is my favorite on the island! Why? A few things: 1. Great rates for what you'll get. 2. Very comfortable beds! It can be tough to get quality sleep when you're away from home but I was very pleasantly surprised that our beds were very comfortable. Even though we spent a lot of time exploring the island, I also wish I made time for a nap to take advantage of that bed. 3. Complimentary happy hour for guests. This was such a fun treat! It includes a glass of wine of your choice (they had quite the variety) as well as a small charcuterie plate. 4. Overall clean and gorgeous grounds. If you have time, it's fun to walk around and take advantage of the fire pits. If you're planning a trip to the island whether it's a family trip or girls trip, this is such a good spot and pretty central to everything. read more

The Pavilion Hotel is just a short 5 minute from the ferry terminal and near the beginning of the main shops and attractions. The beach is a few steps away, but get there before 8am because every square inch of sand will be occupied by 10am. The hospitality was remarkable! We had our baggage held upon check in and check out, were given several vouchers for free wine and cheese, and offered an opportunity to book excursions at a discounted rate. I really appreciated receiving a text when our room was ready because our ferry arrived at 9am, and we were eager to freshen up after walking around town. The rooms were clean, cool, and comfortable. The grounds were well maintained, and housekeeping attended to our room daily to replenish water, coffee, towels, etc. Our room had two double beds, a Keurig with coffee pods and creamers, water, refreshing AC, soaps, body and hair care, a chair, and a small TV. For being a mere 370 sq feet, it was fairly equipped. Continental breakfast is served every morning, and complimentary beach towels can be requested at the front desk. I only removed one star because of the price. We paid about $600/night but didn't feel like the cost was justified. read more

We stayed here 2 nights on our recent visit to Catalina. We've never stayed overnight on our past visits so decided we'd do it this time with kids in tow. Overall our experience was 4 stars. There was a hiccup at the beginning of our visit. Upon checkin at the hotel, Kaylee gave us room 205 but came to our door about 30 min later and told us we needed to leave because the room was due for inspection today. So we had to repack our luggage and leave the room. That was very inconvenient and frustrating especially with kids. Then they didn't check us into another room on the 2nd floor until 4 hours later around 1:30pm. For the inconvenience, they refunded us 2 nights destination fee for their error at check-in. Also on our 2nd day at the hotel, there was no running water around 6:25am in the morning. No water in sink or shower. We notified the staff via text and then water appeared within 15 mins. So bizarre right? Aside from these events above, the hotel stay was pleasant. We liked how it was so central to eateries, golf cart rentals and the beach. The hotel provided us with bath towels and beach chairs when we went to the beach. We enjoyed the wine and cheese afternoon reception daily. Breakfast is just bagels and croissants with coffee and OJ. read more

Staff: This is a place where they shined. All of the staff was incredibly nice and accommodating. Our friends joined us to celebrate a birthday and brought a birthday cake. It would not fit in our hotel fridge so I asked if they would hold in their staff refrigerator and they were more than happy to oblige. Quality: This is where my main issues were. The hotel outdoor space is gorgeous and very well thought out. They made it beautiful with plants, lots of tables, chairs, fire pit, and decks. The inside quality is on par with a motel vs a hotel. In other words not as nice as far as quality of the room. The first thing I noticed was a chemical cleaning smell immediately upon entering the room. It remained for the two nights we stayed here and really bothered me. Also, we were on the first floor and the pipes from the people above is very loud. Literally if they were to wash their hands or shower and I bet it would wake you up. Luckily the 2nd night there was no one above us. Value: Seemed fair I guess considering. Overall: I would not stay here in the future simply due to the smell. May have been a one time thing but would not want to deal with it again nor the loud pipes. Pro tip: Be sure to check your deck door is locked. The first morning after sleeping in our room, I realized our patio window was actually a door and it was not locked. Pretty scary thinking that it was unlocked the whole night. This is my fault for not realizing that what I thought was only a window was actually a door. read more

For my special birthday, my other half planned a nice long weekend in Catalina Island. We didn't want to deal with a long drive or flight out of town and a 1 hr boat ride from San Pedro seemed like the way to go. The hotel is conveniently located very close to the dock, it was about a 3 minute walk but they do offer bell service where someone will meet you at the dock and take your luggage for you. My overall experience was great - the team is amazing, the rooms are decent and the grounds are beautiful. 2 thing I didn't like, it's quite expensive for the room - $300-$500 week day (weekend was much more) - My 2nd floor King Premiere didn't have a view and I had to keep the curtain closed because the walkway passes in front of the room. They do offer groundfloor rooms with a semi private patio but I didn't feel it was worth the price point. Second, they did drop the ball on getting my room ready for a special ocassion. My fiance called them several times for weeks prior to our rrival and went to them in person while I was getting a massage to ensure that the room be ready with champagne, etc, - he really, really wanted to make it very special for me so to his disappointment, nothing was done except a note card & a 4-piece box of chocolate. The team (Demi/Mohammed) did a fantastic job making up for it but for a special occasion and 5 reminders, it was really disappointing but nonetheless we did enjoy our stay. They have a daily happy hour for their guests which comes with.a glass of wine (5 varieties to choose from) along with a personal cheese platter with a few cheeses, crackers, jam and a dried fruit. You can get it each night of your stay and either sit in the indoor lounge or outside where you can enjoy the ocean view. I noticed the lounge had sevral boardgames for those who enjoy games. We also had the front desk help set up a hummer tour of the island. If you book with the hotel, you can get a slight discount and the departure area is just a 5 minute walk from the hotel. The hotel location is close to everything - all the restaurants, bar, the port and a 10 min walk to the casino and a 15 minute walk to descanso beach. read more

We stay here every time we come. I'm hesitant to say anything nice because I'm afraid other people will learn about it and come here too, leaving no room for us! This is my hidden secret! Argh. Well, I guess I should share but yeah, this is the #1 hotel on the island in my opinion. I love talking to others who name different hotels and try to explain about how so-and-so's rooms are better, or they're closer to one thing or another. Not even close. The best rooms, the best ( almost only ) courtyard for an Avalon hotel, 14 steps to the beach, private showers back at the hotel's courtyard so you don't have to track sand into your room, the nightly fire put and wine/cheese, and the early morning continental breakfast. As an added bonus, I bring cat treats for the cats that stalk the courtyard from 5pm to 6pm every night. I don't know whose cats they are but they are not trusting, and I don't blame them. Still, I bring treats every time I come so that I can say hi to them. We really want to thank Margie for her over-the-top assistance on our Nov 2024 trip. She's the best, thank you. read more

We like this hotel and have returned several times. The service is excellent and we really love the location and amenities they offer. We really enjoy sitting in the courtyard and gathering around the firepit in the evenings. They offer complimentary wine and cheese every night at 430 for hotel guests and coffee and pastries in the morning. The rooms include a mini fridge and Keurig machine, and you get 2 bottles of water (free) in your room at check in, but can request more for a fee. They also stock a good assortment of coffee pods and creamers in your room. As a guest of the Pavilion Hotel you also get room credits at some of the local restaurants and discounts for some of the activities offered by Catalina Island Company I took off 1 star because... A) the guest rooms have a strong damp odor that you can't get rid of... you'll even smell it on your clothes after you return home. B) their rollaway beds are TERRIBLE! We had requested one and it was wobbly like a see-saw. It would not stay level. We called the front desk to ask if they had a different one and the hotel associate was very kind and brought us a replacement right away, but unfortunately this one was even worse! The second one felt like a metal/spring cage on top of a rolling platform. You could literally feel the metal wires inside the "mattress". I was convinced that this was just a bedframe and they forgot to put the mattress on top. It was so bad we couldn't use it, but we felt bad and didn't want to trouble the front desk again, so we didn't say anything. read more

I want to start by saying this is a larger review of Catalina itself. You get the feeling that they really don't care, or don't want you there. Most of the island, stores, and hotels are owned by one major corp, so it seems like Disney land in all of the bad ways. They have you captive on the island, everything is very expensive, and there seems to be a shared kitchen for many of the restaurants. The hotel itself was nice, and the staff seemed nice and helpful, but they just seemed to be trained in the ability to tell you to move along so they could get on with the next transactions. The whole strip by the shore is very transactional, and they want to move fast. They are turning people over, either every day or every couple of days. I might have had a different experience if we had stayed up higher on the hill. Speaking of the 'shore', there is none. It is really a place where they park boats, and they threw some sand on a platform and put a ladder down so you can swim in some pretty murky water. I cannot imagine why people want to come lay on this tiny strip of sand, and swim in rocky water. So the hotel is very pretty and well maintained. They have services for the beach (first come, first served, which is something they say about everything). They will give you towels and sometimes setup an umbrella for you. They have a free glass of wine and crummy snack plate each evening. The continental breakfast is just prefab pastries and some bagels. Coffee was fine. The room is a standard hotel room, but the temp control randomly turns itself back to some default setting, so every night I would wake up sweating at 4am. Ahh, the top rated hotel in Avalon. I thought that I could not go wrong! Maybe we came at an off time, but it wasn't as great as I'd hoped it would be. Several issues along the way. Negatives: We were unable to get into our room with the key cards they gave us at check-in. My husband went to get more, and we had the same issue again. They came to let us in and fixed the issue later. The makeup mirror light was also out, and they replaced it with a new one also. We had to call them twice to get them to fix it finally. Temperature in the room is all over the place with the thermostat, and it's very humid. If your hair is prone to frizz and looking too voluminous, this isn't the hotel for you. The bathroom door squeaks, which is something they should fix to avoid waking your sleeping partner. The sink is terrible and sprays everywhere if you turn it on as you would any other sink. Some gross and rude guests. People arguing with each other over nonsense, people letting their children walk around naked (who are old enough that it's really inappropriate). And we woke up to screaming, running, and door slamming children next door. Not exactly the place for couples or anyone trying to enjoy a nice rest. The complimentary wine and cheese is terrible. We stayed two nights and didn't even return to redeem our second vouchers. So gross. Positives: In terms of the room itself, it's small but upscale. The bed and pillows were very comfortable, so no complaints there. Shower was fine. The bathroom sink has a makeup mirror and plenty of counter space. Coffee machine is nice with Starbucks and high quality creamer. They also have a safe in the room. I really liked the fire pit they had going at night. Some friendly people invited us to join them, which was nice. Location is awesome, and it's easy to walk around and access your room easily. Overall, some positives and some negatives. Hence the three star review. All in all, we'd check out the Hamilton vacation rental spot on the hill next time. read more

My best friend and I decided to celebrate our birthdays here at the Pavilion. I had been here once before so I knew it would be a great choice. It was! It's a quick walk from the boat dock. We were able to check in early which was perfect. Great customer service!! Included with the hotel was a tour of the Casino, which we really enjoyed. Plus Wine and cheese at 4:30 everyday. And breakfast buffet and at the Avalon Grill a few steps away. The room was perfect, two beds, coffee ststion, bathrobes. Perfect! We also received a nice surprise, birthday wishes and a box of chocolates for each of us from the hotel. So nice! Thank you Danny and Ashley! This is a great place to stay on your next Catalina visit. Oh they also took care of our bags when we checked out, arranged to get them to the dock for us. read more

My family and I stayed here for 2 nights and it was amazing. The staff is super friendly, especially Marissa, grounds are kept up nicely, room was clean and perfect size for our family of 4 ( we stayed in the moonlight suite) and the location is everything. Loved the evening complimentary wine and cheese. We took full advantage of it both night. The views are also so beautiful. We were super close to everything. The beach is literally 14 feet away which made it perfect for the kids. Plenty of food options around and close to the docking station. It was an easy walk from the boat to the hotel with our luggage. Next time we visit Catalina we will definitely be staying here again. Loved everything about our stay! read more

The only stars I'm giving are for location. It was really nice to be able to pop in and out of the room while we were out and about. The beds are super uncomfortable and it was miserable on my body for two days. The room next to us sat outside on their patio chairs until past 3 AM talking it up, I would think in such a small place that the staff would ask them to go inside. Finally, at 7 AM as I'm sitting on the patio furniture in front of my room while my family slept, house keeping swept dirt from the patio above down on my head. I had to scream "hey hey hey" since it was 3 or 4 dumps of dirt onto my head and in my eyes. I complained to the front desk and they did not care at all. I was so upset and shaking, I had to rinse my eyes out with saline drops. We won't stay again and I wouldn't recommend. The island company is not living up to the standard you'd expect. read more

I would love to give 5 stars but unfortunately there were some hiccups that I can't give them a full rating. Me my husband, our two girls and my brother in law stayed at the Pavilion on May 31st-June 2nd. This would be about our 10th time on the island since 2015. I booked us two separate rooms, one for my lil fam and the other for my brother in law. I booked through Expedia like I have for many years, never had an issue. Prior to our arrival I made sure to let the hotel, if possible to have early check in because we were arriving around 7:30am. So we arrived right on time.One of our rooms was actually ready, which was perfectly fine and awesome, at least we had a place to store our luggage and unwind for a little bit. I made it a point first before heading to the room, to change the card I had on file so that when the final charges were taken out on check out there would be no issues. Front desk even said no charges to the card would be made until we checked out that Friday. Well I'm not sure what happened but maybe about an hour later there ended up being multiple charges "holds" they kept saying on the card that I had them remove. This ended up being a big issue for me because all my spending money was now gone. Thankfully I did have great help from Autumn at the front desk and the manager Tom. I explained everything to them, and even though I was upset I did apologize multiple times because this had never happened in all the years we've gone. I will blame the system but it was still a major inconvenience for us (that is still being resolved as of 6/10). The manager Tom did try his best to accommodate us by giving extra wine vouchers, waiving some island fees. He did say he was going to also give us either a discount or free island tour/excursion of some kind and a bottle of wine be sent to our room however we did not see that happen unfortunately. All the workers there were extremely helpful and nice, even the cleaning ladies who gave us extra water for our girls. The grounds of the hotel always smelled super clean. I've never seen mopping of walkways but they did that and I've never stayed at such a nice hotel. It felt like its own little oasis. There were some tiny things too. I did ask if they had a microwave before we arrived and they said there was a communal one but when we got there, there was none to be found, so I couldn't warm up my daughters left over food. Also they had a mirror on the closet door when you opened it. This mirror was hanging on by a thread, it was not sitting correctly and it came right off when my daughter opened the door. Thankfully we were right there to catch it so it didn't fall on her but that could have been very bad. The other thing was the little fridge that was in our room did not get cold at all, and the morning we left it was thawed so when I pulled out our containers of food from Avalon Grill they were soaked. Like I said I wish I could give 5 stars I really do and like I said everyone was extremely nice. But those details I can't overlook. I do still want to go back to this hotel though! Great staff. Special shoutout to Demi, who was very helpful and personable during our whole stay. She even remembered the names of my kids as we were checking out! The rest of the staff was also very helpful, from the other front desk people to the wine and cheese servers and maintenance/cleaning workers. We loved Catalina Island and would most likely book this hotel again when we visit again. The only thing I wish they had was a pool. It would've been fun for our little kiddos. Oh, and an elevator! The hotel is only 2 levels tall, but if your room is upstairs and you have a double stroller with 2 tired kiddos and groceries from the nearby Vons, then an elevator would be really nice. Finding a nice hotel on Catalina Island can be a challenge. While the price is expensive for what you get (a glorified motel room), the location is awesome, the staff is great, the grounds are beautifully maintained, and this is one of the better hotels on the island. The bed in our room was top notch. The access to showers and bathrooms after checkout was super convenient given most of us are probably taking a late boat ride back to the mainland after an other day in the sun. Brandon is literally the best receptionist you will ever meet. 110% Service! It's my wife's birthday, but I had not planned super well, and was hoping to just get a good recommendation from the hotel. Not only was he kind and informative, but he also informed us exactly of the nicest closest restaurants, and when we came back (from one of the BEST dinners ever Topside by NDMK, 10/10 Service, Food, Ambiance, Views) he came by our room and surprised us with chilled glasses, a delicious bottle of champagne, and two small boxes of chocolates! This needs to be a 4-star hotel with 5 stars all around. The room came with complimentary Wine and Cheese Tasting for each day here (4:30pm-6pm), and every staff member I've met on the island has been exemplary. I hope the rest of the hotels here can stop by and get tips from Brandon, as his service is above and beyond most 5 star hotels. Covid review. First time staying here and I loved it. Centrally located along the strand across from the pier and steps to the sand. Rooms - room was smallish and clean with modern furniture. The bathroom was gigantic and I loved it. We did stay in an ADA room so that could be why. The fridge in the bathroom came in handy for extra waters and wine. The pillows here are a bit old and lacking fluff. Tip: bring your own. Surprised that there was no safe in our room to store valuables while we were at the beach. Would have liked one, but not deal breaker. Also, I would have loved a big plush robe to use while I stayed there. It would have come in handy for the garden area hangs. Garden Area - what a plus it is to have a beautiful garden steps from your front door. There are tables & chairs and chaise lounge chairs around the garden to use. My favorite thing was to make a pot of coffee in our room each morning then go drink it outside in the lounge chairs in our jammies while planning our day, people watching and reminiscing about the previous day. Fire pit - there's a big outdoor fire pit located in the middle hang out area before the garden. It looked so fun to hang out at night around the fire pit with some beverages, but we were not able to. A big family hogged the fire pit every afternoon until late at night. No fault of the hotels, but something I wanted to enjoy. Next time. Service - due to Covid, housekeeping is not turning over the rooms everyday so you call and tell them what you need. We were brought fresh towels, more coffee, waters and cups quite promptly. The front desk staff was very friendly and helped with many recommendations. I was very pleased with all service I received and pleasantly surprised with how quick they were. Perks - due to Covid there is no wine & cheese hour anymore, but you do get a bottle of wine in your room upon check-in. No breakfast either, but they give you a $40 per day food & beverage credit to use at a few different places. We used ours at Descanso Beach Club. We also received free glass bottom boat tickets for two and used them on our last day. It was a fun experience. They also have bicycles to use, but we didn't have time to use them this trip. Next time. I've stayed at 3-4 other hotels in Avalon over the years and this one is the nicest by far plus you can't beat the location! I would definitely stay here again. This hotel is great! We arrived to Catalina Island with no hotel accommodations, we wanted to explore our options as 1st time visitors. It was between the Bellanca Hotel and here. We decided to go with the Pavilion because it was more central to everything and close to night life. It has more of a hotel feel too. The Bellanca was more of an apartment set up. We were so glad we chose Pavilion. Luau Larry's is a great bar & only around the corner. Morning Starbucks at Scoops, only around the corner! Green pier only steps from the front. Location is greaaaat! The room itself was nicely sized. We got a single King Bed room. The beds were SOO comfortable, the AC hits right & is on all the time, they also had cable on the TV. The hotel has a cute courtyard nice for lounging. They also have a fire pit that is on in the evening. They also offer a food credit (for us it was $20 per day) at any of their sister companies. We used our credit at Descanso Beach Club (highly recommended). Last but not least, they hotel offers complimentary wine AND cute cheese plates between 4-6PM. Servers accept tips. I thought this was so wonderful. Many good things to say about this location. We enjoyed our stay on the island, we were more than satisfied with our hotel accommodations we actually extended our stay for 2 days. Great place, 100% recommended. read more

My husband and I just got back from staying at The Pavilion Hotel in Catalina, celebrating a special occasion. Had a few hiccups at check-in but the wonderful manager Timothy stepped in and smoothed everything out for us. He went out of his way to accommodate a special room request for us and added some very nice unexpected perks. That's what I call excellent customer service.
