First time at Avalon and our stay was pretty decent. So it's a small walk to the hotel from the dock. And you're rolling your suitcase along the textured walkway in town. There's a slight hill walking up to the hotel and then we asked for the ocean view room which was on the 3rd floor so stairs cuz there's no elevator. The room is small and ok. It's an older hotel so the bathroom was small too. The view was nice from our room but it had frequent traffic on the street. We got there in time for happy hour and found average cheese, crackers, grapes, pepperoni, red and white wine. We took our food and drinks to the balcony and enjoyed the warm sun and view of the ocean. The free breakfast was fine, it's nothing fancy. But there is warm egg patties, sausage links, potatoes, bagels and English muffins to toast, cold cereal, coffee, hot tea, and a water & ice dispenser. We used the ice and water a lot to hydrate and skipped buying bottled water. The room had a refrigerator, coffee maker, microwave but no hair dryer. Overall nice stay and would return. read more

We had such a wonderful stay at the Aurora Hotel while celebrating my partner's 40th birthday, and I can't say enough good things about the experience. Before we even arrived, Parker went above and beyond to arrange a champagne setup in our room to kick off the birthday weekend. Walking in to find that waiting for us -- along with lovely chocolates on the bed -- immediately made the stay feel special and thoughtful. The room itself was beautiful, clean, and scenic, with a charming partial ocean view. It felt cozy and adorable, but elevated enough that it didn't feel old-school at all. We also really appreciated having a refrigerator and microwave -- such a nice, practical touch. The Friday night happy hour wine and cheese was delicious and perfect to bring up to the rooftop deck. The views up there are spectacular and made for great photo opportunities. Breakfast was exactly what you want before a day of exploring the island -- eggs, pancakes, fresh coffee, mimosas, bagels with cream cheese, and cereal. Everything was yummy and hit the spot. We enjoyed it on Saturday morning, and it was the perfect start to the day. On departure day, Parker kindly held our bags so we could continue exploring and grab a meal at The Lobster Trap before heading out. That level of hospitality, flexibility, and kindness really stood out. From start to finish, the service, warmth, and helpful suggestions for exploring the island were truly above and beyond. With so many options on Catalina Island, I'm incredibly grateful we chose the Aurora Hotel. The hotel is fairly small old building tucked among residential buildings, with a walking distance about eleven minutes away from the boat station. Staff are wonderful and super friendly, the gentleman who assisted me with check in was a very friendly professional and kindly helped me with carrying my luggage to the third floor. When I entered the room, I was surprised by how small it was but it had absolutely everything you need it from microwave, fridge, vanity, coffee maker to all the necessities like Q-tips, shower caps and more. I have posted everything in the photos. I had paid the extra fee to get an ocean view room, and oh my, the view did not disappoint me. It is magnificent and mesmerizing. The AC was already running when I entered my room, so the room was nice and cool. There is no closet cabinet but has small space to hang your stuff and deep drawers to put your clothes. Breakfast is included, and everything was to my liking. They let you to make a plate and take it to your room which was very nice. Next to my room was the rooftop which I spent the most of the late evenings hanging out in there and enjoying the view with the deers wondering around the neighborhood. All in all, I truly enjoyed my stay and most likely i will book this hotel again when I return. read more

This is a cute little boutique type hotel. I stayed in room 310, & had a beautiful ocean view. They have a decent breakfast, & a rooftop deck. I left my new ipad in our bed sheets & they immediately called me to let me know. I had already boarded my ferry back to LA so they were amazing enough to ship it back to me!!!!! Really enjoyed our stay. The rooms are such a nice size and ours had a little balcony. The standard queen bed rooms had a very small shower. Loved that we could use the robes and able to check out beach towels from the front desk. Staff is friendly and helpful. Room service is only provided if asked. They have a beautiful rooftop area that we were able to have breakfast at and look out at night and catch sunrise, sunsets, and see the stars. Overall, pretty high quality experience. This was my second time visiting Catalina Island. The first time was a cruise day trip, and this time my husband and I came for a two-night getaway. After researching several hotels, we chose Aurora Hotel because of the great reviews and recently renovated rooms. It's about a 12-minute walk from the ferry--just a slight uphill at the end, so if you have heavy luggage, expect a few pauses. Check-in was quick and friendly. The room was on the second floor (no elevator, but only two floors total). It's on the smaller side but had everything we needed: a microwave, coffee maker, fridge, two complimentary bottles of water, and even two candies on the bed! The room was super clean with a fresh scent, and there were plenty of towels, robes, and thoughtful amenities like shower gel, body lotion, cotton balls, and ear cleaners. We didn't use the A/C--just opened the windows. You will hear some golf carts and neighbors, so if you're a light sleeper, bring earplugs or use the A/C instead. The rooftop lounge was one of my favorite parts. It's open from 8am to 10pm, and I actually took a relaxing nap there in the sunshine. They also offer a continental breakfast; we grabbed yogurt and coffee and headed to a local restaurant for a full meal. Overall, we had a great stay and I would definitely recommend Aurora Hotel for a clean, comfortable, and peaceful Catalina Island stay. read more

The Aurora was such a cute little hotel! Rooms were clean and the perfect size since you won't be spending much time in the hotel. We appreciate the complementary robes and the view from the roof top deck was a nice plus. It's a great place to hangout for a bit at night. The free mimosas at breakfast were a nice touch. But it was the only part of breakfast we liked. The food was very bland, but you can't expect much from a free breakfast ‍ It's got good views from the roof top deck because it is on the side of a STEEP hill. Obviously manageable since all you do is walk around Catalina to get to different attractions. But just be warned it is one heck of a hill! read more

Very nice service, clean place, good location. Short walk from the ferry to the hotel which sits on a hilly side street. The lobby is spacious and clean, water is available. We were greeted by friendly staff, and the best part was even though our room was not ready to check into yet they held our luggage for us while we went on a tour. The room was small, but did have a view, although obstructed by telephone lines, which is not their fault. Clean. Cute little hotel in Avalon. Only stayed for one night with my husband, and it was a very comfortable stay. Staff was very nice and helped bring our luggage up the stairs to our room. Not a whole lot of rooms so it was easy to find your way. The rooms themselves were smaller than I expected but that was ok for a night. I would suggest them having an earlier check in time since the ferry from Long Beach comes in hours before the official check in time. Ordered a bottle of wine from the lobby and they brought it up to the rooftop for us. Breakfast the next morning left a bit to be desired but that's ok. Stayed here for a weekend and it was comfy and just enough space in the standard room for one or two adults (if you don't plan on spending much time in the room). The rooftop deck is a nice place to enjoy your complimentary bfast. The bfast offerings are pretty standard but they amp it up on Saturdays with complimentary mimosas and on Friday evenings they offer complimentary cheese/wine! Friends had the suite and it was super spacious and a nice gathering place (lounge seating, private deck, separate entrance, and fireplace) for the rest of us to start or end our day/evenings. It's and the end of the island (farthest away from the pier) and up the hill, so if an incline is worrisome for you and/or you don't want to have to rely on golf carts to get up and down, then it may not be a good fit. read more

All the food was low quality. They only had grape jelly for jam. Packages oatmeal. Nothing we were willing to eat. The coffee was no name pods and was very weak. Absolutely loved this hotel. Excellent customer service from the staff from the time I first called to book up until after check out. A bit pricey but the beautiful view from our balcony and the kind employees made it worth it. They even let us leave our bags there after check out and refrigerated our left over food items while we explored the island one last time before our ferry back to Long Beach. If you don't have a balcony, the rooftop is just as gorgeous. Room was small but very clean and cozy. The robes were a nice touch. I've seen some people complain about the bathroom size but it was fine for my partner and I. Felt very charming to have a bathroom window to let the Catalina breeze in and hear the neighborhood sounds. In walking distance to pretty much everything. There is of course a steep hill to get to this hotel so just be prepared when you first bring luggage. DO NOT STAY HERE TRUST ME. My wife and I booked our wedding anniversary at this hotel and it was the biggest let down. There was no hot water, no cell reception, and the overall hotel was dirty and run down. The room we got was the size of a broom closet. The bed took up the entire room. Literally no place to even stand upright barely. The "balcony" is a fake one that you can not even really stand on. The website said the room had a balcony. Just another lie. They also told us there was no reception at any hotel because it was a busy weekend. Another lie. They marketed it as way nicer than it actually is and put a hefty price tag on rooms as if it is of the same caliber as other hotels in the same price range. We decided to leave and paid full price for another hotel since the experience was depressing. They refused to refund any of the money for the nights we did not stay there and lied to our credit card company saying none of our claims were true. They said no hot water was "a ridiculous claim." That sums up the entire experience with them - gaslighting, defensive, and dishonest. Don't ruin your trip to Avalon by staying at this complete dump. You will regret it. read more

We really enjoyed our stay here. The staff was very welcoming and would help with anything we needed. Our room was well updated and clean. They provide a lot of items in the rooms as well to make sure you have everything you need like robes, q tips, cotton balls, waters, and high end toiletries. We stayed during the off season and really enjoyed how quiet it was. We felt like we practically had the entire rooftop to ourselves every morning. The walls are a bit thin but that's to be expected in a place where most buildings are a bit older. Everyone was quiet at night so we had no issues with that at all. Our receptionist hostess was absolutely amazing and very helpful, accommodating all our requests. Her cheerful personality really made our stay so much better! This place is a dump and the rooms would only be spacious for a doll. In order to even get to it, you'll have to hike up Mount Everest. Once you finally get there, you'll go to your shed of a room that is so claustrophobic that it's hard to breathe. There is absolutely nothing on their site that makes it clear that this hotel is not handy accessible. We ended up having to leave to go to another hotel. They still charged us the full price for staying there one of the five days. They took money from other people for the room and managed to get double the money for the broom closet. They then fought the charge with our bank. They managed to get $800 a night for the smallest most unlivable room I have ever seen. Greed, pure greed. Don't stay at this hotel you will be extremely disappointed. There was no hot water in the shower and the "balcony" is a fake one that you have just enough room to stand on (if you are underweight.) read more

The only negative I can say is that this beautiful quaint hotel is located at the top of a steep hill. So take a taxi and you can avoid this negative. But the views from the roof top and the amazing staff more than makes up for the climb. The rooms are comfortable and very clean. You're still very close to everything at the Aurora. I can't brag enough about how friendly and accommodating the whole staff was. This is very much a hidden gem on the island. Oh and did I mention the happy hours!!! In comparison, the price was reasonable and breakfast was provided in the lobby each day. Like most hotels on the island, the rooms are relatively small, but the rooftop patio made each evening comfortable and fun. This place was pretty good. I love how accommodating the hotel staff was, they held our luggage as well as let us hang out at the rooftop deck while we wait to board Catalina Express. It was pretty far from the terminal plus what the other reviews mentioned, the hotel sits on a hill which was honestly difficult to walk up to. Me and my boyfriend are pretty fit people so even we found it difficult to go up that hill. The hotel room was fairly small and the toilet clogged after three uses so that sucked, but we only stayed for one night. But considering how much I paid for our stay, I should of booked some place else due to those reasons. read more

Stayed at the Aurora Hotel for 4 nights while in Catalina. Hotel is beautiful and while the rooms are small, you have to remember that everything in Catalina is small. Every space was well thought out, clean and beautifully finished. Continental breakfast every morning and wine and cheese social on the rooftop patio at sunset on the weekend. Free WiFi. All staff were very friendly, attentive and made excellent recommendations for things to do on the island that were authentic and not so touristy. We thought the hotel was located in close proximity to shops, the Casino, Descanso Beach, the museum and any water sport. It's also very quiet once you start up the hill, so you will enjoy very peaceful mornings and nights, even if the promenade is bustling. Be aware that it is a very steep hill to go up and down, so keep that in mind if walking on inclines regularly is an issue. read more

We loved our mid-week stay here. The hotel was clean, updated and quiet. The staff was fantastic and the included breakfast was plentiful and hearty enough to get us through the morning without having to go spend money elsewhere for breakfast. We usually ate the breakfast on the upstairs patio with an amazing view. It was a great way to start the day. The rooms are not huge, but we don't go to Catalina to stay in the hotel room. It was more than comfortable for us and our partial view was spectacular. It is also not a ridiculously expensive hotel compared to many others nearby. One of our favorite things about the Aurora was that it is up a little hill at the farther end of town and that helped to make it quiet. No party Bros or toddlers running up and down the halls at all hours, and no rowdy bar noise or cruise ship passengers from the main street. So if you are going to Catalina looking for peace and relaxation, the Aurora Hotel should be very, very high on your list of places to stay. We would absolutely stay here again and we give it our highest recommendation. read more

For our mini vacay on Catalina Island we stayed at the Aurora Hotel which was reasonably priced and enjoyable. The hotel is located on one of the farther streets from the dock and up a hill...so we got a good workout walking up with our luggage. One important thing about the Aurora Hotel is that ALL the employees were super friendly and helpful during our entire stay...I'd say they were the best part about staying there. Our room was clean and a decent size. When staying at the Aurora hotel...the rooftop deck was a great place to relax and enjoy the view with complimentary continental breakfast which was decent. The only negative things I can say is that the room...like the carpet and the bed sheets seemed damp to me...I don't know if that's because we were on an island...but hotels in Hawaii don't feel like that. The other thing that was odd was the glass window from the main area to the bathroom...plus the shower curtain is a bit short. Still though...we had a pleasant stay. Next time we're in Catalina we may stay at another hotel closer in the middle of town...but it's nice knowing that the Aurora Hotel is also a good option too. read more

My favorite hotel in Avalon so far ( 4 other trips). The views are breathtaking. Sometimes a single feature really makes a difference, and for me that feature was the rooftop lounge (see photo). The views are AMAZING. During our stay, we had the whole place to ourself (January) and it felt like our own special hideaway. We were here celebrating our Wedding Anniversary, and it was a very romantic place to just relax and take in the views. The rooms are on the small side, but this is true of all Avalon hotels. The bed was very comfortable amd we had an ocean view! The TV was a good size and the hotel was very quiet. The continental breakfast is pretty good ( cereal, bagels and cream cheese, hardboiled eggs, muffins, fresh fruit amd and yogurt to name some of the items). Chris at the front desk was quite friendly. The ONLY negative would be the steep hill to get there. If you have a lot of luggage or are disabled, take a taxi (see photo).
