Nice, clean room in the back. Just the basics. Bed was too soft for us, I slept on the floor and my husband slept on the small twin bed. It's a great location and if you are in the back it's super quiet. We would love to stay again however just worried about the bed. Great customer service however be aware if you arrive early they do not have luggage storage. They suggest a place at the dock which luckily we didn't have to use since our room was ready. Very comfy bed and nice clean bathroom with clean shower and nice hot water. Our room has a dining area with sink and nice sitting in front of windows to see all the passersby and sun rise. and it has a nice comfy living room with sofa TV and a desk. Bedroom area by entrance door has TV. And every room has ceiling fan and AC that kept us cool at night. Will come back again. Nice key lock entrance for privacy against intruders. Catalina Island draws a lot of tourists and sometimes drunken partying type of tourists which we do not like. The keypad entrance is a good idea to keep those drunken tourists out. Room also has a mini fridge and coffee maker. We like the privacy, simple classic modern decor, no frills, no special concierge services, and super clean. Great boutique hotel, right on Crescent Avenue and the beach. They have nice rooms, we really loved the bed, soft and comfortable. There is a mini kitchen in the hallway. I placed my items I wanted kept cold in the refrigerator and no one took them! My wife and I had room 7. My daughter and her friend had room 3. Room 7 is next to their patio' which is nice. Staff is friendly. You check in down below at the gift shop/clothing store. They close the doors early to the main entrance, I think 9, but you have a key to get in. All rooms have keys and you must lock doors yourself. I lost my credit card in the room, looked everywhere and could not find it. Got a call from their front desk letting me know that the maid had found it--very honest. This is a nice, quiet, clean place to stay and the beach is a few meters away--plus the fun restaurants a few steps away. read more

Our stay at The Edgewater was short but great. The rooms appear to be recently renovated and styled with casual simplicity. Our only complaint was that our room was FREEZING! So, so cold!! And no heater in the rooms, just AC. We did visit at the start of the season when it is still very cold outside, but our room was colder than it was outside. Aside from that, however, check-in and checkout were easy. The rooms are all upstairs and there is no elevator...which isn't uncommon on the island, apparently. So be prepared to carry your luggage up (and eventually, down) a flight of stairs. The hotel is located right in the heart of town, an easy, short walk from the boat docks, and right next to a number of great restaurants and stores. We will definitely be back. read more

I read most of the reviews before I booked this place, and I did not have the same problem (the person is not available for check in) as some of the reviews. The place courteously let us know that they would be out for lunch from 2-3pm (check-in is at 3pm) and that the place was available for earlier check-in. We just finished lunch at the time they sent the message, so we checked in at around 1:45pm. Go to the clothing shop below EdgeWater for check-in and check-out (we were instructed to leave the keys in the room and leave if we would check out before 9am). The room number 3 did not have the beach view, but it did not matter as we only booked for sleeping and shower, and the day gets darker so soon during the winter. Microwave is available in the common kitchen area if you need it. The room had the suitcase holder, hairdryer, and the cozy bed. I would totally give this place another try on the next visit. read more

Arrived at 4 o'clock to check in. Sign says check in at Weezy's downstairs next to the hotel. Doors locked nobody there says closing time is 5 PM. There's no phone number you can call to talk to anybody at the Edgewater. You have to call their emergency line. Someone will answer the emergency line. She says the receptionist was at the post office, mailing chargers, or somebody had left them in the room. I'm glad they took care of that. The arrival of the Catalina express, which arrives every day at the same time from Dana Point and I was the only reservation that they had left coming in tonight. I'm shocked that it was a surprise for them that I was coming. This room price is $330 a night that's more than the Hilton. When I asked the girl why she wasn't here she said nobody from the cruise line Catalina Express, which comes every day notified them when the ship was coming in. Ship arrives the same time every day Micro room good size bathroom, clean AC and TV work good Wi-Fi. I would never stay here again. I would not recommend it to you. You can find a better room for your money elsewhere on Avalon run from this location don't walk. Update: room is advertised as having a patio. You guessed it, no patio! read more

We got Room 6 with the queen bed and twin bed. The room was very clean. Sheets and towels were fresh and smelled great. You can tell the building is very old and has been upgraded. I love the way it feels historic. Room 6 does not have a view of the beach, but who's in Catalina to be in their room all day? My two kids and myself were very comfortable. What I loved most is that the beach was right in front of the hotel and we were in the middle of all the action -- Close to the pier, vons, ice cream, souvenir shops and restaurants. The brew house serves breakfast and it's right there. There is a flight of stairs to get to the hotel -- about 30 steps high. We had to drag our luggage up the stairs. No elevator. Beware those with knee problems and back problems... read more

Adorable place in an awesome location! We stayed in a beachfront suite. The view was great and the staff were very nice. Two things to critique: it's definitely time for a new mattress. My husband and I could feel the springs of the mattress. It was not comfortable. Also, the view is great and there are drapes to block out the sunlight. However, one more curtain rod wouldn't hurt. It would block out all sunlight (you get the see the sunrise from the window) completely so you have the option to let light in or not. Great spot! I highly recommend this hotel. It's very clean. There are only 8 rooms and we were upgraded to a beachfront room. The location is amazing. Right on the beach. Rooms were clean and beds comfortable. Only drawback is it's 24 steep steps up to hotel. Dragging your luggage up is a challenge. But at check out, the staff was nice enough to bring our luggage down. Seniors beware. Also we were 3 senior women, so one of us had to sleep in the sofa sleeper. The springs of the sleeper were worn out, so the bed was lopsided. I understand that this place is located in a great spot not that far from where the piers let off for the ferries. It's also right in the center of the action with shops and restaurants surrounding it. And I'll give them that the building may have been built without lifts or elevators despite the very step stairway that leads up to the hotel located completely on the second floor. However, what I won't forgive them for is the customer service and the pathetic fare they attempt to call breakfast or snacks (things that are dollar store quality). For the amount of money that is asked per night during our summer stay, it feels like a mom and pop run establishment without even a properly clean or organized office or welcome space. Let's not mention that there isn't a desk clerk available all times of the day, that one has to call at times. Heaven forbid an emergency happens or one would need a question answered. And should you need assistance carrying luggage up a very steep stairway.... Forget about it. The gal at the desk said she's have to locate someone and she couldn't even find him to help so we ended up carrying our luggage up at our own peril. While I'm able bodied, I had just gotten over a bad back sprain the week before and didn't want to re-injure it. I think what would happen if someone had a baby to hold or was elderly and couldn't? As for the room, it wasn't very big. The bathroom was awkward in that it went up a step from bedroom for the sink portion of it and then up another step to the shower/toilet area. The shower tub wasn't that clean (the grout lines could use some help!). To top it off, the air conditioning only ran in the bedroom area and it was very weak. It took our room 4 hours to finally feel somewhat cool. Luckily, it was just a place to sleep so my husband and I could visit spaces on the island. The only reason I gave it two stars, and that is being generous, is because it's close to walkable activities and sites. If it weren't for that, it'd get a one star. The biggest kicker at the end of our stay was check out. There wasn't anyone to check out during office hours. We found the cleaning maid who helped open the office so we could put our key and find our own receipt amid the scattered paperwork. I took a picture of my key on the desk just in case we were accused of not leaving it behind. Of course, we passed on the sad lumps of scones offered for their breakfast. We're not staying here again when we come back. I've been to better hostels without the high cost. read more

Is The Edgewater a 4 star hotel? Well, in a way, yes. It's literally steps from the beach, maybe 25 feet. It's also literally steps away from several bars and restaurants (20-40 feet in either direction). And most of the rooms are set far enough back from the main drag so you won't hearany of the drunken partying at night. Now, there ain't no room service and there are very few amenities unless you count free water, apples and cookies amenities. We are talking low to no frills. But the room was clean and quiet and much more reasonably priced than nearly every other hotel. And that counts for a lot in my book. If you want a pampered hotel experience or frills of ANY kind, look elsewhere. If you want a clean, quiet room (and nothing more) at a fair price, look no further. read more

My wife and I celebrated our 5th anniversary by spending a night in Avalon, one of our favorite places. We have never spent a night on the island together, so after a ton of research on where to stay, we settled on the Edgewater. We were impressed by the good reviews and the fact that they do not require a two night stay, so we were able to spend the night on a Saturday with only a two-week notice. Plus, the rates were very, very reasonable with a lot of amenities for the price. Built originally as a 1920's apartment complex, but thoroughly updated, we found the Edgewater to be a wonderful place to extend our island visit. The Edgewater is right on Crescent Street and the location is tough to beat. Barbara, the proprietor, has had the Edgewater in her family since her father bought land from the Wrigleys in the '20s and also owns the small souvenir shop downstairs. We found her to be warm and accommodating. Upon arrival, the first thing we noticed were bright hallways and super-cushy carpeting. There is a small staff on hand and the hotel has a great small town, family-owned vibe. This hotel consists of eight rooms, which include two harbor-view suites, four regular-sized "fountain view" rooms, and two larger rooms with a queen bed with a small adjacent room that has a twin-sized bed - great for small families (which is what we stayed in). Inside the room, you can expect comfortable Ortho-pedic mattresses, great bedding with a duvet and down pillows, a flatscreen TV, and updated fixtures. The bathrooms are a good size with full-size showers and good water pressure. In addition to the rooms, there is a small "lobby", which has a couch and TV. Even after checkout, they allowed us to use the lobby to rest up and catch the Angels game before it was time to head to the boat. There is also a nice little patio on the back of the building and an office where you can store your bags before or after checkout. A small kitchen, open to all guests, has a microwave, ice maker, and fridge. They offer a Continental breakfast here in the morning and the fridge is a great place to put your leftovers. Because of the layout and the way the hotel operates, it feels more like a bed and breakfast than just a hotel and is a very relaxing place to come and go at your own pace. Because of the age of the building, you can sometimes hear doors close and people coming and going, but because there are so few rooms, it was never a problem. Also, the free wi-fi signal is weak in the last two rooms, but again, we just used the lobby if we needed to. After our first time spending the night in Avalon, we can't wait to come back and do it again. This stay at the Edgewater definitely won't be our last. read more

The Edgewater is THE perfect place to stay in Catalina. I recently made a trip with a couple of friends to celebrate my birthday and couldn't have been happier. They even put balloons and a giant "Happy Birthday!" banner in the room for me! The Oceanfront Suite: We stayed in the Oceanfront suite and the view was otherworldly. We had breakfast every morning while watching and listening to the waves crash and seeing people stroll by the sun room. At night, we enjoyed a drink while listening to some music it is a very relaxing place. The Edgewater: It's a cute mom and pop type of place, so don't come here expecting to be at the 4 Seasons! Don't get me wrong, it was extremely clean and comfortable but people here are complaining about hot water taking to long or someone not being available at all hours! Chill out. The bagels for breakfast and juice in the fridge was a nice touch. The Staff: I only really ever met Esperanza, who seems to be the hotel's Wonder Woman. She is so sweet, accommodating and knowledgeable about what to see, where to eat and how to get there. Also she was always providing snacks, so how could you not love her. I planned my boyfriends bday to be special. Edgewater was so accommodating that they even set my room with 2 dozen ballons, desserts and his favorite beer so when we arrived he was so surprised, he loved it! I have never dealt with a hotel that works with you to the fullest. The staff and I were emailing back and forth and they were so helpful giving me suggestions of places to go, numbers and did exactly as I asked. My bf at first missed the whole balloons when he came in because when he first walked in the room he was taken back with the amazing view! ALL weekend he just kept saying "ahhhhh this is soo relaxing". We stayed at the ocean view suite 1 I believe. The beach is like 15 steps from our room! Plus in every direction you go, theres everything you need, restaurants, stores, everything! Thank you edgewater for making our stay so memorable! If I can give 6 stars, I would! By the way, the water that another yelper wrote on her review about the shower: mine was like that, you just have to run it for about 3 minutes and wala! Hot water! Also for the comment about marijuana, I must agree with the owners daughter, my bf could smell the marijuana seeping through their room. We stayed around the same time as the other yelpers comment. Not the best rooms I've been in the past 4 years going to Catalina but so cute our little triple deluxe room we had for overnight vacation. Very neat and clean, spacious and well organized. Breakfast and Birthday surprised didnt come out well as planned when we book, I dont know what happen but during our booking we were told they had bday surprise but non when we check in. Also breakfast plan was not great, due to Covid no available breakfast included in the hotel, but we did get a $5 voucher for the Catalina brewhouse, only enough for a cup of coffee, not as good as indicated during booking for free breakfast. Also person before check out at 9 am, I asked the person in the office what time is the latest check out and have no idea?? Unable to answer question. Usually other hotels extends late check out up to 12 nn. When were getting ready to leave around 11:30 the guy knock our door saying check out at 11, I have to explain that we ask before breakfast whats the latest check out and their staff is unable to inform us. We left before 12, but to credit Ms. Brittney who os very nice, informative and communicative during booking and after our stay responding with concerns, in general we had a great overnight stay. read more

The room was clean and nice not a Hilton but was spacious and had all the amineties we could ask for. The view overlooking the boardwalk and beach was the best part! They have complementary coffee, juice, and bagels if you need quick refreshment and even offered to pop us some popcorn. Check out was at 11am but our boat was not leaving until 2pm, so they offered to store our luggage while we went out for our activities. This hotel was so adorable! It was very quiet (during the day) and a very nice set up. Fred was very friendly and attentive to any needs. However, the lady there in the mornings... not so much. She was always talking on her personal phone (on speaker) from the minute we woke up until she left. It was wonderful being woken up to her her conversation outside my bedroom door (sarcasm for sure). However, I would have taken that over the trash man banging the dumpsters behind my room at 7am on Monday morning. Talk about rude awakening. Another noise complaint is the bar noise and drunk people screaming behind my room Saturday night. So if you stay there please avoid rooms 7 and 8 which are in the back by the cute "patio view" (not sarcasm because it really was cute). Another issue was the horrible WiFi connection. They have two different networks divided by 4 rooms each and even then it was horrible. The cleanliness could use a little more attention as our bathroom floor looked as though dirty feet were walking around before we checked in and I'm pretty sure one of my pillow cases was covered in makeup (photo attached). Also, in the description of the room it said I would have two queen beds when I only had one and a full size for the other. The free breakfast consisted of danishes and fruit with coffee and juice. I probably wouldn't stay here again as there are so many options in the area. read more

This may have actually been those worst hotel experience I've ever had. And they do not care about your complaints they have no intention on apologizing or making any accommodations when asked. Here's just a few "highlights" from my stay in July 2022: - Check in is inside a store next to the hotel so good luck trying to check in if the store is closed - The smaller rooms have a musty smell - The WiFi doesn't work in the rooms - I found someone else's hair pin in the bed sheets - They lock the door at night. Fine. But then they locked us INSIDE THE HOTEL. We had to get police to come let us out. This is the *only* door in and out of the hotel. Imagine if there was a fire?! - The same door was later jammed. After now being stuck in the hotel for the second time, my friend (staying in another room) called the emergency line. The women that answered *immediately* started yelling asking if we were the loud group from the night before. This is before even asking why we would be calling the emergency line. She demanded we meet her at the door so she could "show us how to use it." You need to pull the door toward you and then press the "push" lever. She was so mad that we called she reprimanded all of us for bothering her about the door. There was no sign or anything explaining their trick to open the door. She then said that "room one" was complaining about us all night. My friends WERE in room one. She then threatened to kick us all out of the hotel because she "doesn't care where we sleep" tonight - No guests allowed so sorry if you're visit friends or are visiting with others staying at a hotel. They are watching the halls on camera and will call you if you bring in a guest. - I stayed in one of the rooms by "the patio." Looks great in photos but they have the patio seating directly, and I mean within inches, of the windows to the room. So if you want any sunlight it will be with other hotel patrons staring through your windows. - That same patio is not open during its regular posted hours - The rooms toward the back of the hotel also back up to the trash bins for the surrounding restaurant. At around 730am EVERY MORNING the trash trucks dump the bins and it sounds like explosions and literally rattled the windows. When I brought this up to the front desk, they act as if they've never heard of this issue before despite other reviews complaining of the same thing. Instead of an apology I was told, verbatim, "I don't know what you want us to do about it." Maybe invest in double pane windows? Offer a discount when the room occupants can't sleep after 730am for over $300/night? Maybe make those rooms your lobby so people actually have a front desk to go to? I could go on.. The video I have of how loud the sounds are actually sound like the building is being torn down. I had to record it because no one would believe how loud it actually was. Same angry lady from before comes. Changes the battery. Thankfully that was done quickly. Good thing we knew how to get out the door now. - My friends stayed in one of the suites. The room has 5 sleeping spots. A big bed, a donor couch bed and a roll away bed. We did not request the roll away it *came with the room.* My friends were threatened with being kicked out for having too many people staying in the room. There were 5 people. - They had the front patio which is great until the sun is shining in first thing in the morning and the patio windows have NO curtains or blinds. Great if you like to be up with the sun. Not great when you've been out all night. - The "kitchen" is bare. Not even ice. No coffee maker or kettle. - Free breakfast advertised but none offered. - Checkout. No "thank you for your stay" or "did you enjoy your stay?" Nope. Just "you're good." - I also tried to reach out to the hotel twice for a refund for my awful visit to which I was ignored. You're better off spending the extra $60-100/night on a different hotel where you can actually sleep and won't be treated like garbage. read more

Like others have said, this place does not require a two night stay, which can be very convenient since all hotels in this area cost a fortune. Granted, if you're coming to Catalina, you're not looking for the cheapest weekend getaway. When you're walking down the main downtown Avalon area, keep your eyes peeled for the entrance of this hotel. It's very, very small and easy to miss. Check in was easy and a breeze. There are not that many rooms in this hotel, so you won't be bumping into too many neighbors. What I really like is that each room is separate from the room next to it. It's hard to describe, but essentially the walls are not connected, which provides a bit more privacy. The downside is that the doors are thin and you can hear everything. BUT, free wifi, free drinks, free snacks in the morning = GREAT. Plus 2 steps from everything? Great bonus. read more

We stayed here this Memorial Day weekend and had a very pleasant experience. The furnishings, as others have mentioned, are newer and pretty nice. The location is perfect right along the 'boardwalk' in front of the beach. Barbara, the owner, is super nice and helpful. She was very concerning of us when we wanted to go kayaking and kept warning us of the bad weather conditions, etc. Super helpful throughout our stay. She let us store our bikes in the back of her store below, which was pretty nice. We could have left them locked up back in the alley but even she didn't feel comfortable about that. Especially overnight. The room was nice, but a little on the small side. The windows look out into a tiny little 'patio' with a small fountain - you can see your neighbors' windows about 3 feet across so make sure you close the curtains for privacy! The bathroom was decently kept, but the flooring seemed a bit on the older side as we noticed some portions were chipped away and other areas were caulked probably to cover some cracking. We were right next door to the small kitchenette area where there's a full-size fridge, a microwave, coffee makers and a sink. They replenish the fridge with drinks (beer, OJ, apple juice, etc) as well as danishes in the morning. It's perfect for storing leftovers. I also kept my fishing bait up in the freezer... don't worry, I double bagged them in plastic bags! In terms of noise, it wasn't too bad. For the most part we could hear the running water of the fountain, which was actually peaceful and probably helped us sleep well through the night. There was a family there with young kids who ran down the hall a couple times. Not too bad, and at least not at night while we were in bed. We did hear faint noise from El Galleon next door. Guess that's another nightlife hotspot in Avalon. I thought Luau Larry's was the big one but looks like there a are a few more. We would probably stay here again if we come back to Catalina. The nightly rates are pretty reasonable compared to other places as well. read more

Great hotel! We stayed Sat-Sun and liked it so much we extended another night. The location is excellent, located just a couple minutes walk from the boat right in the center of the main street between all the bars, restaurants and other hotels. It almost looks like this hotel was built between two buildings down and alley....you go up a narrow set of stairs and the entire hotel is just 9 rooms all off one hallway. I would have thought it would be MUCH noisier, but actually it was a quiet sanctuary away from the street. This is a very minimal hotel in the way of services but the rooms were super clean and comfortable. Room 7 has an updated bathroom, and room 5 was a little larger, but without the updated bathroom (we stayed in both). Rooms 1 and 2 are the suites and I happened to glance in one that was open and they are GORGEOUS with a little sunroom view right over the boardwalk with a perfect view of the ocean. They are about a hundred more per night but I would totally consider staying in one next time. The staff is wonderful and super accommodating, and let us leave our luggage at the front in the side room several times during our stay before check-in, after check-out, etc. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the water pressure in room 5 in the shower was absolutely terrible. The Edgewater has two primary things going for it: 1) It is literally a stumble away from the beach. If you find yourself inebriated you need not worry about a complicated trip back to your room (well, you do have to manage the stairs...) 2) For being so close to the beach, the fact that the rooms themselves are mostly in the hotel's back helps for peace and quiet. Wife and I slept soundly during our stay. On the other hand, I get that running a hotel can have very tight margins. That said, it shouldn't be so obvious: 1) Turn on the AC BEFORE the guests arrive so it's cool after what can be a long day of travel. 2) Greet visitors with something beyond a curt "How Can I Help You!" (exclamation point intended). 3) If all you can offer are bland bagels/muffins, please don't say you're offering a free breakfast. 4) If you tell your guests the wifi password is listed in the room, make sure the wifi password is listed in the room. 5) Supply a garbage can for the bathroom in addition to the bedroom. 6) Most importantly, be present. I can't believe I have to type this, but the tipping point came when we tried to check out only to find nobody around. This at 9:30AM on a Saturday, a time I'm sure isn't that unusual for checkout. Bear in mind most guests will be taking the ferry, which has very specific departure times. We called the number on the door and received a very deer-in-headlights response "There's SUPPOSED to be somebody there." Well, no kidding Einstein, I'm just calling because I like to screw with you. Duh. But seriously, one hears all the time about leaving a first impression. Often the last impression is rather important too. Not sure if we just caught staff on an off week. A pretty good hotel. I would come back, but only because they seem to be the only hotel on the island that doesn't have a two night minimum. Also, the location is great. Right in the center of Crescent Avenue overlooking the water. The room was clean and simple. However, you could tell it was sort of "fake nice". The windows would not shut all the way so you couldn't lock them. The front office often had no one there. The kitchen was tiny and the continental breakfast consisted of packages bagels and packaged muffins. Their happy hour snack was microwave popcorn. Good wifi though and nice staff. read more

I would have loved to give 5 stars BUT!!!!We stayed in Suite 2. Very nice room and view is outstanding. The staff Lupe was very nice. It was my husbands birthday, they were supposed to have decorated the room but they forgot and came in with balloons and a happy birthday sign after we were in room. """"Spoiler Alert"""""We had no Hot water and TV didn't work. They did open suite 1 for us to use but this was very inconvenient and when I finally got a chance to speak to the hotel about it they made it seem like it was okay because they opened up another room for us and they never said sorry for the inconvenience and sure didn't offer any type of discount. We didn't want to run back and forth across hall to shower. I might stay here again clean nice up to dste rooms but the Hot water is a issue. read more
