My best friend wanted to go to Catalina and since he knew i have gone numerous times, he asked me to look into hotels and wanted me to tag along to celebrate his birthday on the weekend of Mar. 17th thru 19th. Jim, the manager was very helpful and responded to the emails and upon making the reservation he did give me the heads up that its a simple hotel with simple amenities and we get some $$ off if we bring our own towels which i was fine with that so was my best friend. When we arrived at the island it was at night so I knew possibly finding the hotel would be a challenge and it wasnt, gotta really look for the signs and the stairs leading to the hotel. Check in was easy, we got the room with a view. The room itself was indeed simple, but my god the view was amazing especially in the mornings. There was a bed and futon, had a little trouble with the futon but that didnt phase me. My only small thing (to me) the hot water took a long time to kick in, taking a shower was a quick quick. The overall experience at this hotel was great, inded it was a simple hotel, affordable and super close to the shores. My best friend enjoy his weekend birthday celebration on the island.

I've been to Catalina MANY times (love it), and August 2009 was my first stay at the Buena Vista... Where HAS it been hiding?!? I stayed here for $75 (price was $85, but I brought my own towels ;-). I asked them why they do that (just SO weird, yes?), and the manager said that they save on water on the island, which is fine with me! The place is old - classic old, cool old. It was built in the 1920's and looks it, but it is CUTE. I learned it's likely one of the 2 oldest hotels on the island. The then-teensy rooms have been combined to make small efficiency-type rooms. Many have great views (mine did), and I've included a photo to prove it! (I hope I can upload it; I'm new at this... This pic was taken at sunrise, before I went kayaking. Oh wait, I went back to bed for a bit, THEN went kayaking.) My room had a mini-fridge, fan, ironing board (?), small but perfectly fine bathroom (shower only - soap included), and a porch! I think that all the rooms have porches. This was a very helpful way to dry my bathing suit. There is a small, sweet courtyard, with seating. VERY QUIET. Close enough to be near all the bustle (?) of Avalon, w/o all the noise of the summer evenings. I would have loved to be there with a sweetheart, but it was a solo visit this time. I had originally planned to stay only 2 nights, but was so relaxed I added a 3rd night at the Buena Vista. They even let me store my stuff there on my last day. Nice. No food service, no elevator, and you have to go up a staircase to get to the Buena Vista, but this no-frills place is worth it, imho (and I've stayed in some great and pricey places -and some not-so-great pricey places - so I can judge ;-) You may catch sight of some of the feral and owned cats that reside in the area. It's crazy - the hotel next door is $400+ a night! I figure I'm only sleeping, not living here, and for me, the historic funky coolness overrules the historic 'age' of the place. I really liked it and WILL return. I don't know if it would be a great spot for everyone's honeymoon, since they don't serve food and they're not 'beautiful', but it would be perfect for me and my guy, 'cause we're groovy like that. Comfy bed (not Hilton-comfy, but comfy), and they were able to give me non-feather pillows. The manager was very nice and helpful, and able to give me some good ideas for visiting the island. (Which was surprising, since I go there a lot.) I'm going to try to upload a picture here... I hope it works! (Okay, not working yet, but I'll try again.)

This name of this room: Henry. Gorgeous view!

Loved this place! My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night. Luckily they allowed a one nights stay. The lady who checked us in, Lauren (if I'm not mistaken) was super nice and we were able to get in early. She gave us recommendations on what to do since we were there for my boyfriend's birthday. The room was called "Henry" it was small but the view from there was so beautiful!

Wow, the cheapest stay on the island. It reminds me of a mobile home, thin walls, and creaky floors, but what you pay is GREAT! The location is off the hook. I was in the Lyle room and if you hung your head out the window you had a view of the whole port and great views of the houses on the hills. There was a frig, bathroom and a bed and the view mad it all worth it. Love it and will go back. $95 a night or $85 if you bring your own towels.

Paid $100 a night to stay in the Henry room. I'm sad that I have to leave this review. I don't think a place like Buena Vista could stay in business if this wasn't a very small island with such limited "independent" competition. You won't find a chain here. And normal hotel standards are swept out to sea *pun* . The people offering these hard-to-come-by rooms have designated the standard, and it's a very poor one. If this is a 5-star establishment in Avalon, I advise you to make Avalon a day trip only. You won't find Buena Vista hotel rated on AAA or even on the Catalina Island website. That's because it doesn't meet the typical requirements of a hotel. A 1-star hotel on AAA literally has more to offer than Buena Vista, which is more akin to a dilapidated hostel than a hotel (except you get meals at hostels?). I considered leaving 2 stars for the following: -- Quiet. -- Takes $10 off if you bring your own towels. Though you definitely should since the cleanliness of this place is suspect. -- Lets you stay for one night during peak season. Though I stayed for two, so this didn't effect me. Unfortunately, that's all I can think of to consider this very dirty and rundown establishment. It definitely is NOT romantic. Let's be frank, romance starts with the bed. You do not want to get in the sheets and cuddle up when you're staying in this room. The mattress is very old, heavy, and soggy. It felt almost damp. This is not the kind of bed that puts you to sleep. I later pulled up the fitted sheet to find a very stained mattress... I've seen cleaner beds on the side of the road. The Buena Vista does NOT have: a phone, air conditioner, internet, shampoo / conditioner / lotion, etc. They also do NOT have window screens. So you can't even keep your windows open during the night (or when you're out). Since they don't have AC, this is a BIG problem. If you're going to go the "open air" route, at least offer a mosquito net to keep the bugs off at night. The "digital cable" on the dime-store TV was broken. It's actually an antenna that picks up a few random stations that happen to make it across the water. I really didn't appreciate the junk furniture thrown about the room. The pieces were all obviously picked up from the side of the road. The desk had signs of severe water damage from rain. The chair looked like it had been eaten in places by rats. The chest of drawers was chipped and useless, with chewed gum on it. Pieces that are broken and dilapidated definitely make one skeptical on overall cleanliness. I understand that it's expensive to bring pieces over from the mainland, but this is just too much. Even without the side-of-the-road furniture, the cleanliness was still an issue. I pulled the bed away from the edge of the wall and discovered a spider's nest. There's lots of wood rot, etc. I wore shoes in the bathroom and on the carpet. A place cannot be clean if it has no attention to detail. Peeling paint and rust aren't necessarily germy, but they're not clean either. If the owners took the time to add "finishes" to the trim and floorboards, perhaps this place would feel less like an abandoned hostel. My suggestions include: 1) Put a fitted sheet over your boxspring to hide the stains. 2) Replace the 20 year old unsanitary mattresses. 3) Get screens for the windows and maybe the sliding glass door, so there can be circulation in the room. OR get a mosquito net (though your maids will end up cleaning up bugs around the room for sure). 3) Remove the trash furniture. No one is going to use the rotted chest of drawers to store anything. It's simply an eyesore. 4) Get new decor. You can buy 12x18 picture frames from Michaels for $5 and put calendar art in them. That's almost as cheap as rifling through the garbage. 5) Put a headboard on the bed. This will block that weird pipe you have sticking out of the wall (where I found the spider's nest) and actually spruce up the look of the whole room in general. You can even build a headboard with plywood, foam, fabric, and a staple gun. Then just screw it to the wall. 6) Put the toilet plunger and toilet brush UNDER the sink. Yes, they actually fit there. It's pretty gross for a guest to walk into the bathroom and see them on the floor next to the toilet. 7) Repaint. There are several questionable areas that need to be repainted. Some nooks and corners (especially by the ceiling) should be "sealed" with caulking before being painted (because the gaps and cracks are noticeable). These are both very simple things to do and will take less than a few hours in the Henry room. Anyway, I do hope the owners will read this review and consider making changes. I realize that it's easy to fill your rooms because there's not much competition and a lot of demand. But doing just a few of these things would help people really feel like they're getting a deal, instead of looking at this disaster and wondering why they paid $100 a night.

wholes in ceiling located in closet that doesnt have a door. windows non locking. this isnt the worst of it!

Last year, Vista and Snug were under the same ownership, which is no longer the case. Snug now has closer affiliation with Hotel Aurora a bit up the hill. Snug is a cozy and charming 6-room inn. There is staff on duty during the day; welcome in-room wine and snacks are provided as well as daily continental breakfast. There is no staff on the premises at night, although someone is on-call. My stay was lovely and somewhat surreal. I visited during the February rains which caused the cancellation of all Catalina Express boats on 2 days during my Avalon visit. This forced guests here for the long Valentines/Presidents Day weekend to leave early or relocate. I ended up being the sole guest for my 2-night visit! And with minimal visitors on the island, evenings were also pretty quiet, despite being right above the main drag (Crescent). Snug does provide earplugs and eye masks if needed. I moved up my arrival date due to the weather and Snug was able to accommodate me, even offering the same room, which was the Santa Catalina room, the inn's "crown jewel" situated on the corner with two large bay windows, one facing Avalon Bay with Casino, Bay and pier views, the other with a built-in window seat facing Sumner and the hills above. All rooms have a fireplace and deep soaking jetted tub. The rooms are not particularly large but are full of charm, coziness and warmth. No robes or slippers, but there were 2 clock/music/alarm machines. Complimentary reusable water bottles are provided; there's a water/ice machine in the hall. The welcome snacks offered were olives, pretzels and high-end nuts (i.e., no peanuts). The continental breakfast was quite ample and includes a small loaf of warm banana bread, yogurt, fresh berries, granola, milk, juice and coffee or tea. You fill out an order slip as to what you want exactly and what time you want it delivered. There are 6 delivery times for the 6 rooms, which of course was not an issue for my stay. There is a common room with a sofa, fireplace and machine for coffee and tea. There is a closet for luggage storage, a public restroom and umbrellas. The front door is open 8-5, key access is needed in the off-hours. Shout-outs to the great staff I met--Jackie, Destiny and especially Johnny at the front desk and housekeeper/breakfast preparer Alicia. Overall a fabulous stay. All boats to and from Catalina Island were cancelled on 2 days of my visit, forcing other guests to change their travel plans. I ended up being the sole guest for all 3 nights of my stay here! With some whispers of Mt Ada being haunted (but not as many as Banning House Lodge in Two Harbors), I was a bit concerned, but fortunately had no paranormal experiences. To briefly review Mt Ada's history, it was once the Catalina home of William Wrigley Jr. and family, of chewing gum and Chicago Cubs fame. He was instrumental in putting Catalina "on the map", and his descendants still own the Catalina Island Company, which runs Mt Ada, Hotel Atwater, Pavilion Hotel and Banning House Lodge, as well as other businesses. All my stays at Mt Ada have been with the Company, although it was previously run as a private B&B. Mt Ada still runs as a B&B, as opposed to a hotel. It's a pricey stay but has many many perks that justify the expense. These include transportation to and from the boat or helicopter terminals, use of a golf cart throughout your stay, daily made-to-order breakfast and lunch, pre-breakfast continental breakfast, afternoon wine/cheese/charcuterie, 24-hour butler's pantry with snacks like gelato, chips, cookies and popcorn plus alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, discounts on Island Company tours and activities. Currently there are about 4 main people interacting with guests at Mt Ada, plus "behind the scenes" kitchen and housekeeping staff. But Pierre, Liz, Tim and Yoli (Yollie?) work their hardest to accommodate guest needs--they are the chauffeurs, front desk, waiters, luggage handlers, concierges, etc. I applaud them all. One of Mt Ada's pluses is its location on the hill (Mt Ada) above Avalon Bay, even above the main Bay viewpoint that all the rental golfcarts stop at (traffic jams are common here). It's quite peaceful, although in busy times the noise from "downtown" does carry uphill. Mt Ada has 6 rooms. The room I booked was the Grand Suite, Mr. Wrigley's former bedroom. It's the largest room, with a separate living and bedroom, a bathroom with a separate shower and tub, and a large terrace above the first floor terrace. It has a fireplace, as do 3 other rooms, and a raised bed that requires stairs to access, as does one other room. The living room has an antique "radio" that is seen in photos with Mr. Wrigley. There are radio stations hand-written on it; I was appalled to see "graffiti" defacing this historic relic. The terrace is fabulous, but alas the weather prohibited much use; I feared the high winds would blow the cushions on the chaise lounges over the railing. Even the dining tables on the first floor terrace were stored; in more temperate weather it's the loveliest place to enjoy breakfast or lunch. The breakfast and lunch menus have some new items and some old faves. Once again a fabulous and peaceful stay. Thanks again to all the staff. With the Pavilion Hotel reopening soon, Mt Ada may be the next property to undergo renovations. I hope it does not lose its charm or homey character.

My husband and I stayed here on June 16-19, 2025. We came to the Bellanca a few years ago in Winter…read moreand loved it, loved our room, loved the hotel. We wanted the same experience and the same room. We got a Studio Suite room in the back of the hotel in the upper private area. The last time we stayed here, our room seemed bigger, and I was a bit disappointed about how small the room seemed compared to last time, but we ended up really enjoying our stay. The room was clean, although housekeeping did not clean our room the first time we asked the front desk. Before our third and final night, we went up to the front desk and told them we were extremely upset our room was not clean the day before when we had asked them to clean it so they promptly came up and cleaned our room. The linens were clean, white, and fresh and the robe was nice though short. The towels were comfy and clean and they gave us more towels when our room wasn't clean the second night we stayed after we asked them. The outside the patio was amazing. We had a gorgeous view of the city behind us and the ocean in front of us. We loved to sit outside in the comfy chairs and just soak up the view and drink coffee/tea that was provided for us with a Kuerig machine. We had plenty of free water bottles and ice and kept asking for more and more because we drink like fish and they gave it to us all for free. The room had a couch and a little table, but the table was too short for my husband to use his laptop. He said he would have liked a bigger table, but we made do with what we had. Also, there were no nightstands in the room and the closet space was very, very small, just a small wooden box in the room with only enough space to hang our jackets. There were no real drawers to place our clothes in so we left them in the luggage the entire time. The bathroom was made of beautiful Italian marble with a large bathtub that we filled to the top with warm water for our nightly bath soaks. The only thing we didn't like about the bathroom was that the toilet was right next to the wall, giving us little room to sit and do our business and the sink had no area around it to place our bathroom essentials except for a really, really small glass area above the sink to place our toothbrushes. We took really long naps while we were there with the air conditioner on full blast and really loved our bed. It was sooooo comfortable. Also, our room had a refrigerator where we placed food we bought from the market and left over food from the restaurant. We are definitely coming back again to the Bellanca hotel for a simlar Studio Suite room, hopefully next time, a bigger one light last time, but even though there were things we didn't like about this room, we may request the same room again because the view outside looking towards the ocean was amazing. Oh, and the hotel gave us two free drink vouchers worth $15 each for mixed drinks at the Naughty Fox which we used and enjoyed.

I loved this hotel so much! The staff were super friendly and helpful. It's super close to…read moreeverything and has a beautiful balcony for a beach view! I also loved that they have free bikes for a little cruise around the town :)
