I would come back and stay here again, my only suggestion would be to add some kitchen shears to the kitchen please, that would have come in handy. While it may have been a beautiful unit decades ago, today it is badly in need of a complete renovation. The maintenance issues started immediately. The shower handles were loose and falling off, the TV didn't work, the ceiling fan didn't work, and there were ants throughout the unit. The condo was also extremely dusty, and much of the furniture was heavily worn. One of the dining chairs was actually unsafe because the seat bottom was missing. If you sat down without noticing, you would fall straight through the frame. The master bedroom had a very uncomfortable bed, and there was visible water damage in both the master bathroom and the bedroom. There was also a strong musty odor coming from the master bedroom. I work in commercial construction and have spent years around buildings with moisture intrusion. While I cannot confirm what is behind the walls, the odor was very consistent with hidden water damage or mold and made the room unpleasant to sleep in. The golf cart, which is advertised as part of the rental experience, had non-functioning headlights. This meant we couldn't safely leave the property after dark one evening. When we reported it, we were told the golf cart was "complimentary," which felt like an excuse rather than a solution. Whether it's included in the rental price or not, if it's provided to guests, it should be safe and fully functional. Our interactions with Catalina Island Vacation Rentals were also disappointing. While they did address some issues that were within their control, the customer service left a lot to be desired. One employee, Katarina, questioned why we needed additional towels and asked how many towels each person was using because, in her opinion, we had already been given enough. After paying a premium to stay in Hamilton Cove, we didn't expect to have to justify asking for clean towels. Overall, it feels like the owners are simply trying to maximize rental income while delaying the significant renovations this unit clearly needs. Between the poor condition of the condo, the maintenance issues, the unusable golf cart at night, and the lackluster customer service, this was not the relaxing vacation we expected. We love Catalina Island and will absolutely return, but we will never stay in Unit 1-53 again and will think twice before booking through Catalina Island Vacation Rentals.

She got Covid on the Sunday before they were supposed to arrive on Friday. She called the minute she got a positive test to try and reschedule to a different time. Not asking for their money back, just to reschedule to when she didn't have Covid and could go virus free. They would not reschedule or refund because of Covid! He said he was done with Covid, couldn't save the place for them. She said she didn't want to come with Covid but she had a $950 deposit that she was going to loose! He hung up on her! So crazy that he wouldn't just roll her deposit of $950 to use at a different time when she was not contagious! Apparently, he doesn't care! I would be careful of the company that values the buck over the health and welfare of his clients!!

All of the bedrooms are upstairs and the living room, dining room, outdoor patio and kitchen are on the first floor. There were four of us and we decided to spring for a few extra dollars for the Penthouse condo because it has two Master Bedroom suites that are really on an equal par. Both have king size beds, new bathrooms and Smart TV's with incredible picture quality and full internet! Who has that at home? The houses, hotels and condos in Catalina have always been a little funky but the Penthouse condo is in a league of its own. The hot tub on the rear deck is brand new and clean and it was all ours. To sip our wine and look at the stars from the Jacuzzi in total privacy was quite the experience. The rear deck is secluded as there are no other buildings above or around it. You are truly alone and during the day it gets quite warm so I laid out for a total body sun tan and it was worth it. The front patio off of the living room has a great view of the ocean and Casino so staying in this place was definitely special. The front patio has outdoor seating, so we also enjoyed ourselves with the view of the lights at night too. The second master bedroom suite also has a view from the bed and has its own balcony upstairs. Even the third bedroom with the twin beds has a view. There was plenty of space in the living room, dining area and kitchen and it was fully appointed with all of the pots, pans and dishes that were of high quality. It was like living in a fully equipped home. The one thing I loved was having a washer and dryer right in the unit. We felt so lucky to experience this place and for the price, it was a bargain. I hope the owners keep the rent where it is because we are coming back. We stayed in those small hotel rooms in the past and all I can say is "never again". We walked to town in the evenings, it was a couple of blocks, ate dinner and returned to our elegant condo. It was a little sad to leave because we had such a great time. We took care of this place just like it was ours.

The views are stunning as you can see from my photos. When we initially arrived the door was not open as we had been told. It took 30 minutes of calls to get the property manager (Rita I believe) to come let us in. Apparently it was a miscommunication between the owner and the manager on site. It wasn't a very pleasant wait because we were pretty tired from a 4 hour cruise to the island. Additionally, the room had not been cleaned from the prior renters. However, the manager immediately got 2 maids on the job and they were very quick to do a great cleaning job. My review would definitely be 5 stars for this property if this hadn't happened. It wasn't the end of the world but it was an inconvenience that is pretty inexcusable for the rate we were paying. The condo itself was a 2 bedroom. It was modern and clean. Wireless internet. Flat screen TV and comfortable furniture. Full kitchen with everything you need. Oddly enough it didn't have air conditioning but on Catalina it's probably not necessary very often. Really enjoyable place to stay. Right down the hill was a very small beach area for swimming. There were also boats moored near shore so if you boat here you can secure your things nearby. The property has a security guard who screens who can enter it, which was nice. The guards we talked to were extremely friendly. Our room came with a golf cart and I'd definitely recommend that you secure one as well. It's not far to the main district, but it's not really walkable either. I'd highly suggest staying here. Just make sure to triple check that your room keys will be waiting!

After removing the bedding, we discovered what appeared to be a large blood stain on the mattress that had clearly been covered up rather than properly addressed or the mattress replaced. This was not a small spot or minor issue -- this was human contamination hidden beneath the sheets where guests were expected to sleep. While the hotel did refund our entire stay, there truly was no other acceptable resolution given the severity of the situation. Refunding us does not erase how disturbing and unsanitary this experience was. As hospitality professionals ourselves, we know the standards that should be followed regarding guest safety, cleanliness, and biohazard protocols, which is exactly why this was so shocking to us. This was not simply an oversight in housekeeping -- it reflects a serious failure in hotel sanitation and management procedures. Guests should never have to question whether their sleeping environment has been properly cleaned and sanitized. We left extremely disappointed and honestly horrified that this condition was knowingly left for incoming guests.
