courtyard area and boarded up jacuzzi, and a person sleeping on the furniture
    Dayna L.

We love Catalina so much, and have stayed at multiple hotels, so here is my review of Hotel Catalina aka Studio 9 Hotel Catalina: Location: 4.3/5 - super close to the boardwalk/beach/restaurants, but up a slight hill (we enjoyed walking up and down the hill for exercise, but might be tougher for older folk) Hotel room: 3.9/5 - we knew we were booking a small room because we were only in Catalina for 24 hours. That said, we were on the top floor/corner unit which was very nice, the queen bed was comfy, the room wasn't the cleanest, the bathroom could use a little work, but that's expected in the old hotels of Catalina. Did not have AC (which we knew) but the ceiling fan and windows being open kept the room cool enough to sleep in at night. Again, only there for 24 hours, the room did its job. Staff: 5/5 - we met a cute older lady who lived at the hotel/had a key, we assumed that was the owner of the hotel. She was very nice. And then the front desk lady was very nice as well. The only downside is that there is no hotel staff all 24 hours. The staff arrived at 9am and left at 8pm - we arrived at 8am on the island so we had to take our stuicases with us to the beach since no staff was there to unlock the front door for us to store our luggage. Totally fine, but I can see this being an issue for other guests. Hotel: 3.8/5 - the hotel is old (just like 90% of the hotels on Catalina, which we expected, and are totally fine with, as we aren't in the hotel much since we are out diving all day) - hotel has no elevator (we knew) so this might be tough for old folk. No "secure" place to store luggage like the other hotels, however we did leave our luggage in the lobby along with other guests and it was fine. The hotel mentions a jacuzzi, but it's boarded up, so technically no jacuzzi. The courtyard area wasn't very inviting/clean when we were there so we did not relax over there. We did like the front porch patio though, and the top floor balcony for a little view. There is no daily housekeeping, which we don't mind, but I know other guests might. Pricing: 4.4/5 - the pricing was definitely way more affordable than other hotels, which we appreciated, especially since we were there for only 24 hours. Would we stay here again? Yes we would.

    Cottage A room

It's was fine for what we needed which was a place to sleep for our weekend trip. We stayed in the Cottage A 2 room unit which is right next to the main lobby building. The rooms and beds are pretty small, the shared bathroom in the Cottage until is also pretty small, but since the majority of our trip was spent outside it wasn't that big a deal. Some of the pros of Hotel Catalina is the location. It is a little bit up hill, but everything in the town is within walking distance of the hotel. From the ferry port it was probably a 10 minute walk to get here. And the restaurants and bars are just right down the hill. Some cons are the building is starting to show it's ago, we visited during the winter so the rooms get really cold, thankfully they did provide a portable heater for us to use. The beds feel kind of worn out, so if you're visiting Catalina and looking for a place to relax with some luxury, this place isn't it.

Stayed here over this last weekend. Aside from the fact that the hotel itself is rundown and outdated. It was a pain to check into as the front desk person seemed to have no records or information at hand. The moment you walk in you get haunted hotel vibes which was confirmed by the haunted Catalina tour we were on later that night which I highly recommend. Fun and spooky. The room had a terrible layout where the bathroom was tiny and falling apart. And the sink for the bathroom was in the sleeping area. See pictures. The walls were paper thin and you could hear everything going on in the hotel. The "cable" and "streaming" services for the TV would not work hardly at all. I barely got any sleep the whole weekend. The room was cheap. And the bed was comfortable. But other than that- this place was a nightmare. I would spend a little more next time to stay somewhere more updated and less haunted. Also with less plumbing next to the bed. Just weird.

    Stain on bed

If there are ANY other options, take it. We walk in and I can tell the carpet looks dirty, random stains everywhere. We get back to our room after our long day out wanting to take a shower and the water is out, didn't get fixed for a couple hours. Then once we are finally ready for bed, we pull down the sheets and see a giant stain in the middle of the bed. I then move my pillow and find a spider behind it. We remove the sheet to make it sleepable for the night (there is no staff there after 8 to help), then next day when we try to ask for new sheets they say cleaning staff is gone and can't do it until the next morning (when we check out...). They wouldn't even just give us new clean sheets to change the bed ourselves. They were zero help and not the tiniest bit apologetic about us coming to a dirty bed. Would never stay here again!!

    Rust stains in toilet

This was my first time staying on Catalina island and I know most things are older so I came in with tempered expectations. I would not stay here again, but it was fine for the weekend. This place looked way nicer in photos and wish I would have read more reviews before my trip. Pros: Location, affordable price, nice staff/easy check-in, mini fridge and window A/C unit in the honeymoon cottage. Cons: Extremely tiny room, gross carpeting so I wore shoes inside whole time, rust rings in "sanitized toilet", shower curtain held in place with garbage, ants in bathroom when we checked in, holes in bathroom doors, jacuzzi was STILL closed "for COVID" in August 2022, and no ironing board in room.

This is an older Victorian style hotel that is close to Restaurants & Shops in the Avalon side of Catalina Island. The hotel "staff" woman at the front office was HIGHLY unprofessional and VERY RUDE/ Unhelpful. The Hotel is very dated and is in need of upgrades. The room we got was very small and appeared to be clean upon further inspection of the room. There was old dried up blood stain on the mattress blanket. There were lots of stains on the towels in the bathroom & mold on the faucets. The room lights & Fan would turn on/off randomly at night?!?!??? VERY ODD. FYI there is no A/C so the only way to cool off the room is with the fan. Since the lights kept flickering we had to shut everything off thus making the room VERY HOT! The walls are paper thin so expect to hear other hotel stayers full conversations through the wall. The carpet in the room was old & crusty so we had to wear our socks the entire time we were in the room. The toilet was broken & stopped flushing. We told the lady at the front desk & she gave a slight attitude and told us she will take care of it. Hours later when we came back to our room, the toilet was not fixed and it was disassembled. There was no note or phone call to tell us an update. We had to use the emergency phone number to get it fixed since the front desk was closed by the time we made it back to the hotel. As we were leaving the hotel, the SAME front desk lady was slouched in a chair near the entrance of the hotel messing with her phone and did not acknowledge us as we left the hotel with our luggage. This hotel is a literal nightmare and absolutely SUCKS. MONEY WASTED!!!!!!

    Roaches in the bathroom light

DO NOT STAY HERE. This hotel was the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. They put us in the bottom floor. A few minutes in, we realized the "free WiFi" didn't work. We asked if we could switch rooms as we didn't get any service. The attendant said we couldn't switch rooms because we already "walked in" mind you it was less than 3 minutes. Later, we realized how gross this place was with roaches as decoration inside the bathroom light, grime on the sink, and the overall musty feel that this place had as soon as you walk in. On top of that, the bathroom door does not close from the inside. You have to have someone push the door from the outside while you pull inside for it to fully close - and repeat to open it. The toilet also takes forever to flush. Every flush looks like it's going to over fill. I'm sure it happens often. The shower temperature also has a mind of its own. It randomly gets extremely hot and cold. The front door curtain also stays in a certain position (peep the picture) we had to put a towel over it or else you can see in from the outside. We stayed in the bottom floors room 101 and we could hear the steps from the top lobby as well as the neighbors next to us. Extremely thin walls that you can hear CONVERSATIONS! GO ELSEWHERE!

The girl working the desk was so rude She needs to get a job not working with people. Not friendly at all ! She is running people away from your hotel Bathroom very tiny Needs work Need someone to assist with luggage TV didn't work for 2 days and the desk person wouldn't call to fix it No one to assist after 4 Sign said gone to lunch but she never did come back Nancy came by one day and was very helpful and sweet You need someone like her on a daily basis !! Bed was comfortable Enough storage We will not be going back to this hotel thanks to your rude girl who works the desk and "greets" people

The good: This was one of the few places I saw with availability for the month of August that was under $200/night. The hotel is walking distance from the ferry port. The location is great. It's uphill but is only a few minutes walking-distance from the beach. Restaurants and shopping are all walking distance. A free breakfast is included after 9AM. It includes passion fruit guava juice, tea, coffee and wrapped pastries. They have gloves for you to grab the items. The hotel has patios outside that is open for anyone to sit on. If you have to check out but need them to hold your luggage you can store your stuff in the front lobby space. The staff members were friendly. The price was great. It was $126 for a one night stay and they let me check-in at anytime. Check-out was at 11 AM even though there was a sign that said it was at 10 AM. The bad: There is no air conditioning but the ceiling fan was helpful and there was ample air flow from the windows. The communal patio space was outside out window so we couldn't leave our curtain open if we wanted privacy. The bathroom is tiny and you have to hold the handle down for a while for the toilet to flush. The interesting: The bathroom sink and vanity are separate from the bathroom and is made out of a converted dresser. The hotel is decorated in a Victorian and vintage way inside and the outside also reflects the Victorian charm. It was built before the 1920s. I'd absolutely stay here again!

Great service and friendly staff. Room was cozy but well worth the value! Morning perks included good coffee and pre packed pastries!

Dirty mattress what is that!!! Yuck

Ehhh...... For almost $700 dollars per 2 nights I was expecting way BETTER. The outside pictures looked decent but NOPE. Cons: I understand this is an old Victorian building, but Jesus the rooms are in really bad shape. Everything is old and musty. -The carpet was absolutely disgusting and smelled like humid. -The windows were not closing properly and the screens were broken. -The bed mattress was super uncomfortable as it has a huge dent. -The mattress had Yellow stains (pee, body fluids)!!!? Who knows (see pics) -The bathroom was so TINY. You can barely fit to use the toilet. -Very very loud, not sure what the walls are made of but you can literally hear everything!!!!!!!!!! -Last, it just gives creepy vibes!!!!!!! I mean you get what you pay for..... I wish I could of invested a couple hundred dollars more to be more comfortable in a different place. Pros: Location: is like 3 minutes walk from the main (downtown) -The front desk person was nice in general.

Quiet morning coffee on the 3rd floor porch.

Celebrated my birthday at Hotel Catalina. Ignacio arranged a wonderful room for our needs, as we wanted a view that wasn't on the porch. Come to the Hotel Catalina for a COZY & QUIET stay (quiet hours are 10pm-8am). Central location to restaurants and shops, quick access from the main road. COVID-19 safety precautions include no daily tidy room services, hand sanitizer & gloves for complimentary self-service morning coffee, juice, & danish, social distance placed furniture on porches/patio. The lovely staff and management are responsive to questions and assistance. If you need to stay a bit longer after checkout, you can place your luggage in the front room.

We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Catalina! The building is over 100 years old and it's a small boutique hotel, so don't expect the same amenities you'd get at a Hilton, but this place is packed with charm. The location of this hotel is perfect! We walked absolutely everywhere, and it's really convenient to hop on the shuttle bus also. We were on the 3rd floor with an ocean view room (#302, highly recommend!) and there is a beautiful shared patio on each floor also. We loved sitting out there with coffee or a drink! The room was much more spacious than we had imagined and the bed was extremely comfortable. We even had a full size dresser, table and two chairs, and a small closet. The bathroom is indeed tiny, but it serves its purpose efficiently. We got very cold at night and asked for a space heater, which we were provided right away and it worked wonders. The only drawback for us was that the friendliness of service was a bit lacking. I wouldn't call it rude, but maybe cold. The entrance/lobby is set up like a house and when you walk in the front door, an employee is directly in front of you at a desk not 5 feet away. Twice when we came in we were simply not greeted at all. In a boutique hotel like this, it's much more customary to have more interaction with the employees, so that was a bit off-putting, but by no means a dealbreaker. We would stay here again!

Last year, Vista and Snug were under the same ownership, which is no longer the case. Snug now has closer affiliation with Hotel Aurora a bit up the hill. Snug is a cozy and charming 6-room inn. There is staff on duty during the day; welcome in-room wine and snacks are provided as well as daily continental breakfast. There is no staff on the premises at night, although someone is on-call. My stay was lovely and somewhat surreal. I visited during the February rains which caused the cancellation of all Catalina Express boats on 2 days during my Avalon visit. This forced guests here for the long Valentines/Presidents Day weekend to leave early or relocate. I ended up being the sole guest for my 2-night visit! And with minimal visitors on the island, evenings were also pretty quiet, despite being right above the main drag (Crescent). Snug does provide earplugs and eye masks if needed. I moved up my arrival date due to the weather and Snug was able to accommodate me, even offering the same room, which was the Santa Catalina room, the inn's "crown jewel" situated on the corner with two large bay windows, one facing Avalon Bay with Casino, Bay and pier views, the other with a built-in window seat facing Sumner and the hills above. All rooms have a fireplace and deep soaking jetted tub. The rooms are not particularly large but are full of charm, coziness and warmth. No robes or slippers, but there were 2 clock/music/alarm machines. Complimentary reusable water bottles are provided; there's a water/ice machine in the hall. The welcome snacks offered were olives, pretzels and high-end nuts (i.e., no peanuts). The continental breakfast was quite ample and includes a small loaf of warm banana bread, yogurt, fresh berries, granola, milk, juice and coffee or tea. You fill out an order slip as to what you want exactly and what time you want it delivered. There are 6 delivery times for the 6 rooms, which of course was not an issue for my stay. There is a common room with a sofa, fireplace and machine for coffee and tea. There is a closet for luggage storage, a public restroom and umbrellas. The front door is open 8-5, key access is needed in the off-hours. Shout-outs to the great staff I met--Jackie, Destiny and especially Johnny at the front desk and housekeeper/breakfast preparer Alicia. Overall a fabulous stay. Had numerous stays at the Inn at Mt Ada and Pavillion over the last decades, but have found that the location of The Pavillion was it's big plus. The main issue over the last twenty years, is the Catalina Island Company taking the Avalon charm out and replacing it int a cash cow. Late in 2024, The Pavillion shut down for an overhaul, didn't reopen until April 1st of 2026. We were anxious to check out the improvements, but we're sadly disappointed. They DID upgrade the rooms to a certain extent, but increased the room charge to $100.00 + per night. They previously had a great breakfast included, along with an evening wine hour. The "breakfast" is now rolls, coffee, juice and cereal. The evening wine is restricted to one glass, closely monitored. They have a wine machine if u choose to pay an additional charge. From the increase in rates to the minimal extras, the hotel has definitely gone down hill. It's a small town with limited hotels in good locations, so you have to be content for getting price gouged for less services or go to the inner part of town and loose the waterfront charm. By the way, their reconstruction crew did a terrible job. The front door and sliders didn't work well. The sliders didn't lock, out of alignment and the entry door needed two hands to try forcing entry. Look forward to their response.

For someone in a wheelchair or needing a walker and unable to climb stairs, it is not doable.

They have packages that include the ferry back and forth so I recommend checking out their website. Continental breakfast is the basics but very good. The rooms are very clean and tastefully decorated As a couple we travel a lot domestically and internationally. The staff at this hotel are probably the most efficient and gracious I have come across in all our travels. We had a problem with our booking and they bent over backwards to solve the issue. The problem had nothing to do with them it was an error on our end. Oliver D and Lily could not have been more helpful and efficient in assisting us. The room was extremely nice. The only suggestion I would make is in regard to the small window that is by the door connecting to the other room. The window is right by a street light. There needs to be a black out blind on that as the light shines through the shut blind The bed was extremely comfortable. The shower had wonderfully hot water with great pressure. The hair dryer was fabulous as it had power and dried the hair quickly. Often hairdryers in hotels are so lacking in power I often wonder if it is worth the effort. This one was brillant All in all a wonderful place to stay

The hotel picked up or luggage at the ferry and transported it to the hotel to arrive at 12 noon. This was a first for me... S we pulled up I was transfixed by the beautiful shoreline and properties that rose up on cliffs before us. Oliver at the front desk was very accommodating since we had a change of what we wanted as far as beds go. The hotel had 3 floors and we both got the 2nd. And both of us had rooms right next to the stairway's. Our room was the tiniest room I'd ever had in my life we kept bumping into the corners of the bed frame, ouch. We moved things around so we had a place to open our suitcases. The continued noise from the guests upstairs was very, very unpleasant, it sounded like they were walking around in ski boots. My kids had the same issue but not as terrible as ours was. If you stay here be sure to book the 3rd floor!! I'm not kidding here. The housekeeper Claudia was super helpful and so sweet she was able to get me band aids and alcohol because I cut my toe. I made sure to take care of her! We played games down in the lobby at night and found it to be warm and welcoming with at least 5 areas for 5 or 6 to gather. They included 3 bottles of Evian water and 2 mini bottles of Perseco in each room which was a nice touch! I would stay here again but only on the 3rd floor!

All boats to and from Catalina Island were cancelled on 2 days of my visit, forcing other guests to change their travel plans. I ended up being the sole guest for all 3 nights of my stay here! With some whispers of Mt Ada being haunted (but not as many as Banning House Lodge in Two Harbors), I was a bit concerned, but fortunately had no paranormal experiences. To briefly review Mt Ada's history, it was once the Catalina home of William Wrigley Jr. and family, of chewing gum and Chicago Cubs fame. He was instrumental in putting Catalina "on the map", and his descendants still own the Catalina Island Company, which runs Mt Ada, Hotel Atwater, Pavilion Hotel and Banning House Lodge, as well as other businesses. All my stays at Mt Ada have been with the Company, although it was previously run as a private B&B. Mt Ada still runs as a B&B, as opposed to a hotel. It's a pricey stay but has many many perks that justify the expense. These include transportation to and from the boat or helicopter terminals, use of a golf cart throughout your stay, daily made-to-order breakfast and lunch, pre-breakfast continental breakfast, afternoon wine/cheese/charcuterie, 24-hour butler's pantry with snacks like gelato, chips, cookies and popcorn plus alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, discounts on Island Company tours and activities. Currently there are about 4 main people interacting with guests at Mt Ada, plus "behind the scenes" kitchen and housekeeping staff. My past reviews have mentioned a stay here is more like a visit to a home, as opposed to a hotel. There will be times when you may not see any staff (especially at night). But Pierre, Liz, Tim and Yoli (Yollie?) work their hardest to accommodate guest needs--they are the chauffeurs, front desk, waiters, luggage handlers, concierges, etc. I applaud them all. One of Mt Ada's pluses is its location on the hill (Mt Ada) above Avalon Bay, even above the main Bay viewpoint that all the rental golfcarts stop at (traffic jams are common here). It's quite peaceful, although in busy times the noise from "downtown" does carry uphill. Mt Ada has 6 rooms. The room I booked was the Grand Suite, Mr. Wrigley's former bedroom. It's the largest room, with a separate living and bedroom, a bathroom with a separate shower and tub, and a large terrace above the first floor terrace. It has a fireplace, as do 3 other rooms, and a raised bed that requires stairs to access, as does one other room. The living room has an antique "radio" that is seen in photos with Mr. Wrigley. There are radio stations hand-written on it; I was appalled to see "graffiti" defacing this historic relic. The terrace is fabulous, but alas the weather prohibited much use; I feared the high winds would blow the cushions on the chaise lounges over the railing. Even the dining tables on the first floor terrace were stored; in more temperate weather it's the loveliest place to enjoy breakfast or lunch. The breakfast and lunch menus have some new items and some old faves. Once again a fabulous and peaceful stay. Thanks again to all the staff. With the Pavilion Hotel reopening soon, Mt Ada may be the next property to undergo renovations. I hope it does not lose its charm or homey character.

We wanted the same experience and the same room. We got a Studio Suite room in the back of the hotel in the upper private area. The last time we stayed here, our room seemed bigger, and I was a bit disappointed about how small the room seemed compared to last time, but we ended up really enjoying our stay. The room was clean, although housekeeping did not clean our room the first time we asked the front desk. Before our third and final night, we went up to the front desk and told them we were extremely upset our room was not clean the day before when we had asked them to clean it so they promptly came up and cleaned our room. The linens were clean, white, and fresh and the robe was nice though short. The towels were comfy and clean and they gave us more towels when our room wasn't clean the second night we stayed after we asked them. The outside the patio was amazing. We had a gorgeous view of the city behind us and the ocean in front of us. We loved to sit outside in the comfy chairs and just soak up the view and drink coffee/tea that was provided for us with a Kuerig machine. We had plenty of free water bottles and ice and kept asking for more and more because we drink like fish and they gave it to us all for free. The room had a couch and a little table, but the table was too short for my husband to use his laptop. He said he would have liked a bigger table, but we made do with what we had. Also, there were no nightstands in the room and the closet space was very, very small, just a small wooden box in the room with only enough space to hang our jackets. There were no real drawers to place our clothes in so we left them in the luggage the entire time. The bathroom was made of beautiful Italian marble with a large bathtub that we filled to the top with warm water for our nightly bath soaks. The only thing we didn't like about the bathroom was that the toilet was right next to the wall, giving us little room to sit and do our business and the sink had no area around it to place our bathroom essentials except for a really, really small glass area above the sink to place our toothbrushes. We took really long naps while we were there with the air conditioner on full blast and really loved our bed. It was sooooo comfortable. Also, our room had a refrigerator where we placed food we bought from the market and left over food from the restaurant. We are definitely coming back again to the Bellanca hotel for a simlar Studio Suite room, hopefully next time, a bigger one light last time, but even though there were things we didn't like about this room, we may request the same room again because the view outside looking towards the ocean was amazing. Oh, and the hotel gave us two free drink vouchers worth $15 each for mixed drinks at the Naughty Fox which we used and enjoyed.
