I thought I did a review here before this is my favorite hotel on the island yes there is a walk up the hill and some stairs but it's so cute and I've been coming here for decade ... Tony the assistant manager, and the manager herself are very friendly and very accommodating. I always recommend this place to family and friends, and I've never had anybody disappointed.

5 stars even though this place isn't a 5 star hotel. It's charming and clean and the staff is super nice. It's dated for sure but reminds me of my childhood trips to Florida in the 80s. We had a great room with a great view #14. Beautiful grounds with vines and flowers. Easy walk to town but still super quiet. Affordable for Catalina standards as well. I'd stay here every time. If you're looking for modern though it's not for you.

This was our first time here,,ours Daughters and grandson were here a few time recommended, its so beautiful relaxing the rooms are very well kept and roomy, I couldn't stop smiling enjoying the patio the whole look, if you like plants and friendly staff this is the place to stay, Thank you! Tony and Ester, keep up your good friendly service, we will return. And your doggy Chief in charge too!

This place is incredibly charming and full of personality (the right kind). It's close to town but far enough away to be quiet, a delightful oasis. The owners were so welcoming and kind, and we couldn't have been more comfortable - the room was clean and well-appointed, and the beds were like clouds. We were here with two children, so having access to a fridge and tiny microwave was a big plus. Would highly recommend for anyone who wants to feel the spirit of a place, and isn't into the luxury hotel scene.

The service was awesome. Staff were very nice and helpful. The place was beautiful, awesome murals everywhere. I totally recommend staying here.

Another beautiful evening looking towards the mainland, that seems so far away.

Fourth time staying here, over the last five years. Always a pleasure to visit with the the very nice, friendly managers Tony and Esther. Some important items: Clean cottages and rooms, enjoy your patio or balcony! Rates seem very reasonable, for the island. A standard hotel room on the mainland may easily cost the same. Save big bucks from always eating out and cook some easy meals inside your own kitchen. Spaghetti? There is at least one barbeque available to use in the beautiful common areas. Quiet complex - Although only about a two or three minute walk to town (and Vons), so it's actually more peaceful up the little hill, on reclusive on Sunny Lane. Gorgeous grounds- complex has extensive plants, arbors and Catalina style artwork that Tony does such a great job with! The sit-down ocean view from Unit 16 is quite nice, along with a partial view of the town. And end unit, you feel a welcome degree of privacy, in such a densely populated town; the (dedicated) staircase to the unit drives this point home! The balcony, with a table, two chairs and chaise lounge are a huge bonus. Because the complex is on a bit of a hilly lot, expect some extra steps, without an elevator. Not the easiest place to navigate for people that have (significant) challenges getting around. Of all the times after visiting Catalina the last 30 years or so, this is my favorite place to stay on the island.

Hotel landing!

Excellent service and very attentive staff. Cozy convenient location and very reasonable rates. the manager Tony is welcoming and helpful!

For the bungalow/cottage industry this place is really quaint. It reminds me of something you'd find in a rustic river, mountain resort area with a Mission flair. Lots of cottages piled into a tiny space so I was VERY skeptical upon arrival. I was like, how am I going to get to sleep as you can hear every neighbor? The good news is this neighborhood goes completely quiet by 9 and doesn't stir till 8:00. This is not for four seasons average guest. It has the old door knobs and the tiniest shower I've ever seen. The toiletries are nice and the bed was larger than a queen and comfortable. Slept more than I have in weeks! Easy walk from the ferry stop BUT if you find yourself walking up a steep hill your map software is taking you in the back and there is a much easier way to enter. Look for the Vons supermarket and try again from there.... you'll see the signage.

Especially the San Nicolas room!…read moreFrom the website re: the inn: "From the moment you arrive, the pace of the mainland slips away, replaced by sea air, harbor light and the quiet thrill of being somewhere truly special." What we experienced from the MOMENT we arrived - absolute CHAOS. We were greeted with a horrible rotten egg stench as soon as we opened the door, steep stairs with no one elevator (yes that's on their q&a but just another annoyance), violence and screaming in the streets after dark until 3 am, bass from surrounding bars shaking the building until 2 am, overpowering chemical smell in rooms, single pane glass that sounds like people on the street are in the room with you, gaslighting owners and managers (Melissa - not Jackie), unreliable communication, absolute ripoff for what you have to put up with. Melissa ultimately minimized my concerns by saying "nobody else complained". Okay, and? People have different tolerance levels, different health issues, even if it was someone's first time at the snug harbor inn maybe it wasn't their first time to the island. Maybe they didn't care. Maybe they didn't have the energy to complain. That shouldn't invalidate my experience and the lack of transparency. Can you honestly say you laid the framework for guests to make an informed decision? Did you provide transparency around potential barriers guests may experience during your busy season? No. This went beyond just a fun foam party during the daytime hours, there were literal violent fights and screaming in the streets BOTH nights until 3-4 AM. See videos below from Saturday night around 1:30 AM. I do acknowledge they can't control this behavior but they can and SHOULD add transparency for folks who are expecting a soft experience based on their own misleading advertising. The unprofessional manager, Melissa, also loves to blame-shift. She told us we could press 0 or call a number provided if we experienced issues again on the second night. I called 2-3 times throughout the night and it rang endlessly. By this point I was exhausted and didn't even think to get the physical number from the end of the hall and just assumed they weren't answering. When Melissa told me she never received a call the next day I was shocked but instead of being apologetic she said "if it was me, I would have walked down the hallway and got the number". I'm so sorry, in hindsight, if I wasn't running off of 4 hours of sleep collectively over 48 hours I would have gotten dressed at 3 am and gone to the end of the hall after pressing 0 didn't "work". Not sure how I was supposed to discern between it not "working" vs someone not answering. Funny how pressing 0 during business hours worked just fine. Either way, what a ridiculous process to shoulder the burden of breaking up riff raff to the guest and then blameshift when the thing you said would work didn't... While I would love a full refund, I firmly believe we are entitled to at least one night of a refund because of the misleading description on the website and we couldn't make a truly informed decision. I was told they would consider updating the website in the future but that benefits my husband and I in no way. The right thing to do is provide a refund for tainting our visit to Catalina with 0 reprieve from street violence and drunken debauchery.

What a hospitality! We did not expect this type of compation and problem solving, a true representative of Hotel Metropole. Now the pros: Location is amazing, navigation around the hotel or around it is perfect, close to everything, especially the breakfast shop on presmises and of course customer service. The room was exceptionally clean, I saw the service ladies actually mopping the floors after vacancy of other rooms. cons: second floor rooms overlooking the courtyard, get loud because of the shops. It has very comfortable bed with TV, ceiling fan, AC, and clean bathroom and towels. Simple and low key amenities for book lovers, introverts, and quiet ones. No loud party and drunken customers. No romantic thrill seekers- if you look for romance- please go to Dubai or Vegas or other hotels - as this one is perfect for us. Staff are always friendly. So, I walked around town by myself and explored all the hotels. I walked into this hotel and was invited to view the rooms by the owner. The minute I saw the rooms, I was in love. I booked this hotel and the Avalon Suite half a year ago. The moment my husband and I got off the boat and walked over to the hotel, the staff was amazing. An attendant saw me going up the stairs with my luggage and ran down to get my heavy luggage and carry it up the stairs for me. Check in was easy breezy. Our room was ready within minutes and we got to go into it at 11am. The Avalon suite was the room all the way down the hall on the left hand side. I believe we are one of the few rooms with an extra large jetted bathtub, the main reason why we chose this particular room at this hotel. I made sure to take photos of all the rooms the minute I walked in so I could write this review complete with photographs of the way we found it. The living room had a fireplace and a tv above the fireplace, a comfortable couch and a sofa. We had two small tables in the room. The room had excellent heating and air conditioning which we controlled at the touch of a button. We of course had a separate bathroom with jetted tub, two sinks, and a nice and large counter top. In the living room, we had another sink with a small refrigerator and two complimentary bottles of water. We had a safe next to the refrigerator which we did not use. The bathroom had a separate small room with just the toilet which we loved because after using the toilet and making a stink, we could turn on the light/ventilator which worked really well at clearing out the smell and close the door. The bedroom was a bit cramped, especially at the foot of the bed in front of the fireplace, but we had a large living room that made up for it. The bed itself was very comfortable and firm, the linens were clean. However, I got really cold on the first night I was there and had to request extra blankets which they promptly brought us. Also, the extra large pillows on the bed were extremely uncomfortable, forcing us to throw it to the side in the middle of the night. I think it's just there for decorative purposes. We found two extra regular pillows in the closet which we made good use of. The room had a small closet with plentiful hangers. There were dresser drawers we made good use of. There were two lamps, one by each side of the bed on top of a dresser with drawers. I loved the space on top of the dresser for me to place my medication and phone and watch chargers. There were plentiful chargers, USB and C type. Although the chargers on my husband's side of the bed wasn't working and I had to charge all of the electronic devices on my side. One thing about the jacuzzi tub. The wall next to it is really thick and we both had a really hard time getting into and out of it. We were both afraid of falling down and had to climb up slowing, stand on top of the little wall area, and climb into the tub and vice versa each time we used it. Other than that, I have no complaints about this hotel. The rooms are only made every third day we stay and we can tell them when is most convenient for them to do that for us. Everything else we need is brought to us by texting them. The hotel had warm Otis Spunkmeyer cookies each evening, though we only ate it one evening because we were out the other evenings. A member of the staff told me to call him so he could place the cookies in our room while we were gone, but I forgot to call each time. Someone came in our room and placed Ghirardelli chocolates with a cold bottle of water for each of us each evening we missed the cookies. Someone even came in one time and made our bed for us which was really sweet. The staff were all so wonderful and warm, making us feel right at home. And when we got tired, we sat in the chairs at the front of the hotel overlooking the beach below while sipping complementary coffee, tea, and lemon infused cold water. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of staying here.

These limitations were not clearly disclosed when I booked. Most concerning, however, was the noise. There were guests partying late into the night, making it nearly impossible for my family to sleep. A restful night's sleep is one of the most basic expectations of any hotel stay, and unfortunately that was not possible. Prior to my arrival, I attempted to cancel my reservation, but my request was denied. Had I known the property's limited amenities and the excessive noise conditions, I would not have proceeded with the reservation. Overall, I feel the accommodations and experience did not justify the premium price I was charged. I respectfully requested that management review my stay and offer an appropriate refund or partial credit as a gesture of good customer service. However nothing was done to resolve this. They offer a continental breakfast each morning out on the patio, which is a peaceful spot to just sit, enjoy the firepit, and koi pond. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, friendly and accommodating. Evelyn was awesome, thank you for the smiles and truly wonderful service throughout our stay. Off the boat, we went to drop our luggage to store until check-in. Fortunately we were there during the week, and our room was ready earlier, so we chilled a bit before heading out to explore and have lunch. They also held our bags upon check out. After we returned from an adventure, they allowed us to sit on the patio and enjoy the sun before we had to be at our boat. We couldn't have asked for a better stay, and we will absolutely go back. Just a note for anyone who has mobility issues. The hotel is awesome, but note that you have to walk part way up a little hill to reach the stairs to the small lobby. There are stairs to the lobby and depending on which floor your room is located, there is no elevator, just stairs. The hotel we stayed at was nice, but it did have some drawbacks. There was only one elevator, so we had to rely on the steep stairs to get in and around the building. We booked a Classic King room, which was cute but quite limited in space. At 180 square feet, my husband and I had to be cautious about giving each other enough room to move around. To make matters worse, when we checked in, the linens on the bed had bloodstains, which was really off-putting. I had to call the front desk to request clean sheets, and it was a hassle for both of us, especially since we were exhausted. The housekeeping staff arrived close to 9 PM, and it took them some time to replace all the linens with clean ones. The room amenities were also limited. We had a mini fridge, a flat-screen TV, a hair dryer, and a small vanity chair, along with two complimentary splits of Prosecco on the first day, which my husband enjoyed. However, the last night raised concerns about the hotel's safety and security. Someone played a prank on us by knocking on our door but not answering. We called the front desk twice to report the incident, but security was unavailable to check the CCTV footage. My husband and I felt unsafe because we had no idea who was knocking. Brian, the front desk staff member on duty, was prompt in keeping us updated on his communication with security and the hotel manager. David, the hotel manager, later reached out to my husband, recognized the incident, and invited us to try their sister property, The Pavilion. In the end, our stay was pleasant overall. All boats to and from Catalina Island were cancelled on 2 days of my visit, forcing other guests to change their travel plans. I ended up being the sole guest for all 3 nights of my stay here! With some whispers of Mt Ada being haunted (but not as many as Banning House Lodge in Two Harbors), I was a bit concerned, but fortunately had no paranormal experiences. To briefly review Mt Ada's history, it was once the Catalina home of William Wrigley Jr. and family, of chewing gum and Chicago Cubs fame. He was instrumental in putting Catalina "on the map", and his descendants still own the Catalina Island Company, which runs Mt Ada, Hotel Atwater, Pavilion Hotel and Banning House Lodge, as well as other businesses. All my stays at Mt Ada have been with the Company, although it was previously run as a private B&B. Mt Ada still runs as a B&B, as opposed to a hotel. It's a pricey stay but has many many perks that justify the expense. These include transportation to and from the boat or helicopter terminals, use of a golf cart throughout your stay, daily made-to-order breakfast and lunch, pre-breakfast continental breakfast, afternoon wine/cheese/charcuterie, 24-hour butler's pantry with snacks like gelato, chips, cookies and popcorn plus alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, discounts on Island Company tours and activities. Currently there are about 4 main people interacting with guests at Mt Ada, plus "behind the scenes" kitchen and housekeeping staff. My past reviews have mentioned a stay here is more like a visit to a home, as opposed to a hotel. There will be times when you may not see any staff (especially at night). But Pierre, Liz, Tim and Yoli (Yollie?) work their hardest to accommodate guest needs--they are the chauffeurs, front desk, waiters, luggage handlers, concierges, etc. I applaud them all. One of Mt Ada's pluses is its location on the hill (Mt Ada) above Avalon Bay, even above the main Bay viewpoint that all the rental golfcarts stop at (traffic jams are common here). It's quite peaceful, although in busy times the noise from "downtown" does carry uphill. Mt Ada has 6 rooms. The room I booked was the Grand Suite, Mr. Wrigley's former bedroom. It's the largest room, with a separate living and bedroom, a bathroom with a separate shower and tub, and a large terrace above the first floor terrace. It has a fireplace, as do 3 other rooms, and a raised bed that requires stairs to access, as does one other room. The living room has an antique "radio" that is seen in photos with Mr. Wrigley. There are radio stations hand-written on it; I was appalled to see "graffiti" defacing this historic relic. The terrace is fabulous, but alas the weather prohibited much use; I feared the high winds would blow the cushions on the chaise lounges over the railing. Even the dining tables on the first floor terrace were stored; in more temperate weather it's the loveliest place to enjoy breakfast or lunch. The breakfast and lunch menus have some new items and some old faves. Once again a fabulous and peaceful stay. Thanks again to all the staff. With the Pavilion Hotel reopening soon, Mt Ada may be the next property to undergo renovations. I hope it does not lose its charm or homey character.
