Hmmm... Where to start? The Zane Grey was really great. People seem to love it or hate it here on Yelp. Mark me down for love it. This was one of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed in. Also one of the most expensive. But here's the thing, most of the other places on Catalina required a two night minimum. So technically more per night it worked out perfectly for us because we didn't have the time to commit to three days on the island. I've stayed in hotels all over the world, and the room didn't have physical problems like almost 100% of other stays. By "physical problems", I mean: something dirty, something broken/damaged, or in need of updating. I can attest to what other Yelpers are saying, the amenities are lacking. There is an unheated pool, and that's about it. If there was a hot tub overlooking the bay that would have been rad. I might have been disappointed in the amenities if we were just going to be be hotel-bodies. But Catalina beckons you to be outside. The golf cart shuttle was a great touch. We were picked up after getting off the Catalina Flier, and driven over to the Zane Grey. Our room was already available so we got to check in early. The the day we left the Flier wasn't leaving until 4:30pm, but they let us leave our bags at the hotel and then brought them to the pier for us. All the staff we encountered were super kind. Complementary breakfast was delicious! Made-to-order omelets & French toast, bacon, potatoes, etc. Nice way to start the day, instead of dropping cash in town for breakfast. We booked this hotel via a luxury hotels section on our Am Ex card. Not sure I would call this a luxury hotel for the price paid and what was received vs other experiences. While we did have an awesome corner suite with a beautiful view of the harbor, the room itself was worn and the walls were super thin. You could hear every move above and below and all around, so it wasn't the most relaxing stay. Plus, the hotel is next to the big island bell that rings every 15 minutes and is heard all over the island. Finally, neighbors played music at 6:30am in the morning that woke us up. Why are people not considerate these days? The furniture is showing its age. We brought games to play and the little table we used was all beat up. When you take a shower, you can hear the water moving down the tubes and from other bathrooms. Don't put money in their vending machines. I went to get a Diet Coke and there was no refrigeration. The Coke came out warm. What was particularly maddening was there was a worker in the room and he didn't warn me it didn't work. The pool isn't heated. Being May it was still cold, so no one is in it. The note with all the information on it, left in the room seemed kind of harsh. Don't do this and don't do that. It didn't feel welcoming. The pros. Best view! Loved the cool air and balcony views! Free breakfast. It's nothing super fancy but nice not to have to go out to get some. On our last day, they kept our luggage for us and brought it down to the ferry later that day. That was super cool. :) Finally, last bit of info, it's on a hill away from town. Good for the views. To get to town you can call for a golf cart ride or walk. We walked up and down to get our exercise. Overall, it was an okay stay, wouldn't call it luxurious or super friendly. read more

If you stay here, you will definitely get the cozy vibes. We came here on a weekday (monday) to avoid the human traffic on the weekend. Maybe it was too cold, but the pool was not heated, and there were no other amenities other than a nice view from the back. The staff was nice. But there were no activities during the weekdays and nothing going on at the hotel so we just explore outside. The breakfast was included in the morning, but the massage was extra cost by Ramona $125 per person for a full body massage. I had an issue with the bedding which I didn't raise a problem with the staff because I'm too shy, but there were hairs on the pillow that was supposed to be new. But they had extra pillows and blankets in the closet, so I used those. Overall, it had no amenities and it's just a room. I would love it if this place offered more ! read more

What a terrific experience! The room was spacious and clean with beautiful views. Everyone was courteous, helpful, and friendly. It's way up on the hill but they offered us many golf cart rides to and from downtown Avalon. While there is an elevator, we had to go up and down some stairs to get to our room. If you have mobility issues, I'd recommend calling before you book. A few perks I wasn't aware of (their website leaves much to be desired, but I also may have just missed it): * They offer a shuttle to/from the marina-- call ahead and they'll meet you at your boat * They offer a full breakfast, including fruit, pastries, and an omelette station * There is a third floor patio with tables and chairs One final tip: bring cash! We used Venmo to tip the drivers but I would have tipped more frequently if we'd had cash. There was absolutely zero expectation of tips, but these folks work hard and I wanted to thank them with a tip. read more

Ok, i have a ton of gorgeous pictures from this place. It has the most amazing views you could possibly imagine. And little hint, go the catalina off-season, it is the most relaxing place on earth. Don't worry about who Zane Grey is, what books he wrote, or why he decided on a slightly falic (triangular) pool. It is built beautifully into a hill. Oh!! And the beds we're like the most comfortable things in the world. The room was great, along with sandals and robes, it's just a very comfortable room with plenty of space to relax. The staff (remember, this is an island, islands are known for bad service because...whatcha gonna do?) were all great!! From ownership, management, and all the way down, they made it a very comfortable vacation. Also, they pick u up when you're downtown and bring u up the hill to the hotel. The pool is freezing in the winter but great for a polar plunge!! Anyway, the staff makes you feel at home, this is btw, by far, the best hotel on Catalina!! I've stayed on that island a lot, and nowhere else comes close. Breakfast, amenities, etc...Great place to stay!! I won't stay anywhere else when I go to catalina!! And if you need to take a boat, go with the Flyer, more good people. read more

Stayed here with my husband and friends to celebrate a big event. We loved the location and view of this hotel! Plus our room was amazing. Loved the golf cart service to and from the hotel, and how they transported our luggage off the boat and back to it. Amazing service. The bed was super comfortable, as were the linens and pillows. I booked this hotel directly over the phone as I wanted to chat about my options for rooms that were available. I was talking to a young her girl, I knew the second I arrived who I booked with. Her voice and demeanor totally fit her when I saw her. She suggested a pricier room because of the view- as this was a special occasion, both mine and my daughter's (20) birthday-- I splurged. I called two days after booking and gave the front desk staff my time of arrival from the Catalina Express as I had some questions about bag storage. They actually told me that they would pick us up (such a nice touch!) and that we could leave our bags and also grab breakfast and if our room was ready check in early-- if not just leave the bags and explore the island. I have been there several times but this is my daughter's first trip. We arrive on island and nobody is there to pick up. I call-- several times. Straight to voicemail. I call another online listed number and a male picks up "central reservations" I politely ask "are you at the hotel?" He says "central reservations" agitated. I again, ask- "I am so sorry, are you at the hotel?" Again, "CENTRAL RESERVATIONS" I said that I didn't know what that meant and that I was trying to reach the hotel directly but it keeps going to voicemail and he says "it means I'm in central reservations" I say, "I'm sorry, please don't be so rude- I arrived and nobody is here to pick me up and nobody is answering at the hotel- maybe you have another phone number for them?" He gives me another number as my daughter notices a golf cart pull around with the hotel name- he's holding up names but none are ours, I walk over and explain and he tells me I'm not on the list but get in. We head to the hotel to check in, she says she didn't have our arrival time listed and they must've dropped the ball -bummer nothing about our birthdays is mentioned either and not that I was expecting anything elaborate but I stay a lot of places... they could've actually just said "happy birthday" lol. I'm actually surprised that for what I paid this is the most unassuming front desk area ever. They tell us to put our bags in a closet that kinda smells musty-- ok. Our room isn't ready, we change and the driver drops us in town. Pro here: the transportation to/from town is free from hotel and they are very friendly-- CARL though was a stand out! So knowledgeable and kind!! After calling to check many hours later our room is ready-- we head back and well, the view is wild. It's a beautiful view. The room is fine... but the view is gorgeous. So that night is when things just go reallll bad. We start to hear what sounds like scraping of furniture. Turns out to be wild sex complete with screaming. When we go down to complain the second time (front desk did all she could here) they give us another room (honeymoon suite) but this room is actually worse than ours. The walls are so thin it actually sounds like the people are in the room having a conversation. We can hear them vaping-- like actually inhaling/exhaling. We don't even put our bags in the room bc we just planned on sleeping there as they told us the people above our actual room were checking out the next day. At approximately midnight I think we just gave up and went back to our original room to get some sleep it was just so so bad! The next morning they told us they had problems with them the night before as well... so why not tell us? Ugh. Next night, we get ready to go to sleep after a late birthday dinner and what do you know-- people in that room and more sex- these guests were not as wild as the previous night though! Luckily they only lasted a good hour ... then they were just up all night back and forth. I have never had such a terrible nights stay and for the amount of money that we paid it's pathetic. When we checked out early this morning she didn't even say "good morning" "how was your stay" literally NOTHING. She just put our bags on the golf cart and drove us to the boat. I don't know if she didn't want to know or if she was just rude but I'm not sure I have ever complained about a hotel before this was by far the worst hotel experience I've ever had-- coming from someone whose exhusband once booked Hooters in Las Vegas. Stayed here for 2 nights during the Catalina Island JazzTrax 2025. It's located in a hill with ocean, mountain, and Casino views. There is a golf cart that takes you down to the center of Avalon for dining and shopping. The staff members are excellent. Everyone from the cart drivers, front office, housekeepers, was excellent. Oh.. complimentary breakfast on weekends! The kitchen staff was also nice and made my omelette perfectly. The room was clean and spacious. The bed was comfy. Separate shower room from the toilet. My only complaint: the drapes did not close completely. The track was broken. I had to use hair clips to close the drapes. I need blackout drapes in order to sleep. I took pictures and reported to the problem. Hopefully it was fixed. If you like a peaceful environment surrounded by nature, this is the perfect getaway. read more

I stayed here for the first time exactly one year ago. Little has changed with the property, although what has changed was not all for the better. I heard the hotel now has a new manager. To reintroduce the hotel, it opened in 2019 after reconfiguring author Zane Grey's former Catalina home into the historic wing of the hotel, and building a newer wing with all ocean-view suites. The building that houses the lobby, breakfast room, rooftop event space and a few rooms is also new, as is the pool and large deck area. The hotel still has a golf cart for pick-up or travel to the downtown stop by Bluewater Grill or to the ferry dock. Sylvia, who I met last year, still works the front desk, as does Kelly, both of whom were friendly and helpful. When I left fairly early to catch the 7 :50 am ferry, the security guard took me because the regular driver had not started work yet. Overall, there were no issues with the staff. Where I did have some minor issues were with the room and breakfast. For both my stays, I preferred the ambiance and character of the historic wing. Last year I booked the Honeymoon Suite, which was very large and had what may have been the original mosaic-tiled fireplace and a spacious terrace. This year I had the Queen Ocean Suite, which was smaller but still roomy and had a large balcony with a better view than the Honeymoon Suite, especially of the Casino and Chimes Tower. Both had mini-fridges and large bathrooms. Several things in the room were not working properly: the electrical outlet in the bathroom, the TV remote (I had to use the buttons on the cable box), the safe (was open but locked). I could have called for assistance but did not. Overall wear and tear in the room and some of the public areas was fairly high, probably very few things have been replaced since opening. Not the hotel's responsibility, but the guests in the adjacent room talked loudly on their balcony well into the night and also were smoking marijuana. Luckily they checked out after my first night. I did notice some improvements. The outdoor staircase that accesses all levels (except the newer wing's upper floors) is now complete so one doesn't have to rely on the single elevator. The desk area in the historic wing now has vending and ice machines, plus a microwave. The former lounge area here has become a small guest room. Breakfast has always been kind of basic and pre-fab. Commercially made baked goods (muffins, bagels, English muffins), cut melon salad, whole apples, oranges and bananas, cereals, hot scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon, potatoes, coffee and orange juice. Last year on weekends there was someone making pancakes, but not this year. I still love the hotel's location above downtown Avalon and its historic nature. I just hope more attention will be paid to the maintenance of the property in the future. read more

We had a chance to stay at this wonderful place for a few days. Incredible view, we could see both the mountains and the ocean. The swimming pool, breakfast, customer service, breakfast was excellent. Alexi was specially very kind to us and helped us out whenever we encountered minor issues to accommodate us. Hotel staff made sure to make us feel comfortable. I can't wait to have another opportunity to go on a trip and stay there again. I would never recommend the Zane Grey Hotel. On the first day, the door lock and key didn't work. After hours of waiting, we were told it couldn't be fixed. No upgrades were available, and they told us to find another hotel--unrealistic since our entire trip with friends and family was planned around staying here. We ended up in an unsafe room without a lock. The issues didn't stop there. The toilets weren't flushing, the AC barely worked, and overall the room was in terrible condition. Their "solution" was to promise 50% off our stay, but when we checked out, they only gave 25%. I was told the owner would approve the balance, but that credit never came. Instead of paying for a relaxing, high-quality stay, we were forced to pay their very expensive rates for a broken, unsafe, and poorly managed hotel. My partner and I went to Catalina Island to celebrate an anniversary, and we really enjoyed our stay at Zane Grey. The week before our trip, I was messaged regarding our arrival to the island, as they wanted to arrange for our pick-up from the ferry. Once we got off, a staff member was waiting for us with my name printed on a sign. It was incredibly convenient and thoughtful. The hotel itself is located in the hills right above Avalon. There were gorgeous views of the island both from our room and from the back of the pool region. Unfortunately, the elevator was not working when we arrived, so we had to carry our luggage up to the fourth floor. Apparently, the power goes off quite frequently. Our room was immaculate, and the bedding was very comfortable. However, the room was advertised as being soundproof, and it was far from it. We could hear voices from the room above us, and we were woken early in the morning and bothered in the evening with loud stomping coming from above. Additionally, we tried to enjoy the fire pits by the pool at night, but there seemed to be a loud party going on in the rooms adjacent. The breakfast was typical - some cooked dishes, commercial pastries, coffee, and orange juice. Overall, the staff was very friendly, the golf cart shuttle service was convenient, and our stay was pleasant. However, I might come with some ear plugs if you are bothered by noise. read more

I was on Catalina for a vacation and I tried the Zane Grey hotel. I will be back! The staff are very kind and caring and when I was at the theatre, it was late and I wasn't going to walk up the hill. So, the front desk attendant (who almost definitely had a busy schedule) took time to drive the taxi service to where we were to pick us up. Also, the taxi service takes you and your bags from the dock to the hotel and from the hotel to the dock. Also, if they aren't too busy they can take you downtown to your destination. I had an awesome experience and if you come, you hopefully have one too! read more

Lovely rooms, poorly managed. Shuttle drivers and front desk staff made me (65) and my disabled husband carry our own suitcases up 3 flights of stairs. When you are paying a premium for a room, you expect a certain level of service. (And it was not there) Booked the top floor (not knowing there was no elevator), wanting a quiet room with no one on top of us. Mistake. There was a sun porch that was not monitored by security. Awoke at 445am to voices and furniture being dragged around. Got dressed and went up to ask them to be quiet. After describing them to the front desk, we learned that there were no hotel guests fitting that description. This of course, didn't make us feel comfortable with security! And.....there were only a few towels at the pool (and no phone in rooms or at the pool to call for service). Called on my cell phone to request towels for other guests, and got voicemail. I stayed here with my husband for a few days and we really enjoyed our stay. There were some pros and con. Pros: Free golf cart transportation into downtown breakfast buffet included, nice views, nice staff,nice room. Cons: TV was not working, no phones inside the room to communicate with the front desk, cheap beds wood planks were not the greatest, thin walls we could hear the neighbors upstairs and the people walking down the hallway, the Belltower rang every 15 minutes and it was giving me anxiety. The undercutting of the wood doors is significant and there was a lot of light coming through the bottom so bring a thick suitcase so you can cover it. Overall we liked the hotel but I would recommend checking the price and only going when it's peak season. read more

Beware of this hotel's deferred maintenance. Recommend calling ahead to make sure the hot water works for your unit. Hot water during my stay did not work (even after hotel staff reset the water heater) and only 1 of the 2 ptac units worked when trying to increase the temperature in the room. My wife and I visited during the off-season when the wather was between 50-60 degrees but conditions for an overnight stay were unacceptable for the price you pay. read more

We had an amazing stay at Zane Grey. It's located about a 3min shuttle ride or 15min walk from the town center with the most amazing views of Catalina Island. It's above the Casino. Right as we got off the ramp at the dock around 11, we saw a driver greeting us with a Zane Grey sign with our names. He drove us to the hotel and we were pleasantly surprised that we were able to check in since our room was already cleaned. We stayed at the penthouse and it has 4 balconies which gave us 360 degree views of the island. The entire hotel has been very recently and very tastefully renovated keeping Native American aesthetics. It's a perfect balance of old and modern. We especially liked the outdoor furnitures, very comfortable to lounge and watch the sunrise or chat around the fire pit. We had a kitchen with cookware, bakeware, dishes, utensils, etc. stocked. We didn't have a chance to cook but we did buy fruits and desserts from Vons a few blocks away and had afternoon tea on the balcony. Our room is in the original building and the newer building is just a few steps away but that part of the building doesn't have an elevator. So if you need a more accessible room, be sure to request that. At the top of the new building are a bunch of tables and chairs and a daybed for guests to enjoy the amazing views. The daybed was so comfortable, I could've lounged there the whole day. It was also very thoughtful of them to add some fabric to the top of the daybed for shade. Between the new and old building is a wonderful pool which also has an amazing view of the island. The theme of this hotel is most definitely amazing views. Breakfast is included. They had cold items like yogurt, fruits and also hot items like eggs, potatoes, sausage, bacon, toast, bagel, etc. for drinks, there's coffee, tea, milk, juices. You get mountain views in the breakfast area and even better views if you decide to sit in the patio right above the breakfast area. There are many tables and chairs there too. We didn't get a chance to eat at the hotel restaurant since it's only open Fri-Sun and we stayed during the week, but we heard good things about it. The staff were all really friendly, eat the shuttle drivers. I cannot say enough good things about them. They give you the phone number of the shuttle driver and you call them whenever you need a ride to or from the hotel. They mainly either drop you off at the town center or at the docks, but if there's no one waiting, they'll drop you off at your exact destination. They really went above and beyond and we're all so nice! Reception was knowledgeable about the activities on the island and we ended up doing ziplining, parasailing, beach club, and the botanical gardens. We'll probably do the island tour and two harbors next time. Another thing we liked about the hotel was the many many many plants. It felt very homey with plants. You can tell they really care for the hotel because most hotels wouldn't waste the time and effort to keep all these plants alive. Taking care of plants is hard work so I appreciate the green touches they've added. The maintenance crew was also amazing. We accidentally locked a door in our room and maintenance came to the rescue in just 3min! Another time we weren't sure if we turned off the gas fire pit correctly and they came to help literally 2min after I phoned the front desk! Not only was this hotel newly renovated with amazing views, the staff gave 5 star service. We would most definitely stay here again. read more

Our stay in room 109 was but comfortable but the room is small with a mountain view. Ocean view rooms are much more and if you can afford it, do it! I appreciated the in room coffee maker since a lot of them have been removed from hotel rooms due to Covid. You'll enjoy the relaxing pool area if you just want to swim, tan and hangout for the afternoon. The complimentary continental breakfast is plentiful and satisfying if you are not craving an egg for breakfast. A very nice perk is the hotel offers golf cart rides to the city roundabout if you choose not to walk back and forth from town and they will pick you up and drop you off from the ferry. The restaurant is under renovation however The Buffalo Nickel will deliver to the hotel at no extra charge so you don't have to leave the hotel if hungry. The hotel staff is friendly and tries to please. Shout out to Don who is one of the golf cart drivers and hotel host. Very helpful guy. Overall the Zane Grey is for anyone who just wants to stay on property and relax. If you're looking for town action, you might be happier staying in or closer to town. read more

This Hotel is on top of the mountain with an awesome view, beautiful in the day and night. Although for the pricing I expected a beautiful room as well. The room was very dated floors scratched from what I assume was bed movement. The floor in the restroom was so sticky that I could not walk around barefoot. The shower water was cold to lukewarm warm and took about 7 mins running just to get it lukewarm. The balcony doors were almost impossible to open. They give you rules on the Hotel which was great. They had a golf cart that took you back and forth from the circle which ran from 9 am to 10 pm this was there best amenity. The pool was freezing unusable and staff need training on hospitality and smiling. There are much nicer places than just the name Zane Grey. Skip this place. read more

I will say this hotel is just okay. If there was a 3.5 star rating, I would give it that. First, the positives: The hotel is seated on a hill overlooking the harbor, and the views are spectacular. They have a driver that will drive you up and down to town, which is really helpful. Walking is not really possible. It is straight up hill. The negatives: The staff were not warm or friendly. They treated us like we were inconveniencing them when we asked for any help. The room we got was small. It felt like we were shoved into a closet. Our friends had the penthouse, which was really big and lovely. But, I don't think the price is justified. There are 3 rooms and 2 bathrooms. I can't imagine paying over 2k for a room, and having to share a bathroom. The food for breakfast was just okay. Low-end continental. There was an omelette station on the weekend, and the cook was very kind. Probably one of the nicer people working there. There is a pool, but no hot tub. On cool nights, you will wish there was a hot tub. All in all, it was an okay stay. I think it's overpriced for what you get. I probably wont stay here again. But, it's definitely not the worst and it is possible to have a nice stay. read more

Obsessed with how magical this place is!! My experience was top notch - I think what made it so special was my amazing room - "The Honeymoon Suite". . I highly recommend this room, for what it is it's a great value!!! One of my favorite places I've ever stayed!! The location of this hotel affords so many spectacular views from several locations. The pool deck is especially lovely as it overlooks Catalina Harbor AND has Mountain View's - the only thing that would make it better would be cocktails and food service haha We took the Newport Beach Ferry at 9am Sunday, checked in and they gave me my room at 12:30 Then We had lunch at Bluewater (the bread ) on the water and went over to Descanso Beach Club. I messed up my cabana reservations but we were able to still hang out and they gave us lounge chairs for 40.00 for the last hour or so! This is the spot to be if u can get reservations it's so fun! We walked back to the town and the hotel picked us up... the whole time getting picked up was super easy to get rides into town or get picked up. We had a great Italian dinner at "M" and ate all the food lol... around 830-9:00 we try to find somewhere to go out but the town closes down so we really didn't find anything we went back to the room and bed early. The next morning I went on an morning walk/hike and then went to my free breakfast . For a free breakfast it was pretty damn delicious and I was treated with a wild life show. A mom dad and baby deer were all eating right outside the café tables... Coffee was really good too. I went back to the room relaxed took a Bath in the nice oversized bathtub put on my complimentary robe and sat on my patio to take in the morning views!! A few selfies later... I am a photographer and there were so many great spots in my room. The lighting was really lovely at the end of the day. If you stay here you definitely want to take the opportunity to take some good photos. Upon check out at 11;00 I took my luggage to the front desk and they bring it to me for my ferry ride home later this Monday evening at 4:30. In the meantime I'm going to hang out at the pool for a couple hours and then go down to town and rent a kayak and have lunch. This was a perfect recipe for a delightful one night stay with two full days of fun. I did note a few things that the hotel could do better but hotels got hit really hard during Covid so I understand how a few things could be better etc... the dirty carpets at the hallways and my couch had lots of dirt spots as well... We just came back from vacation at Zane Grey. It came recommended by friends. After reading reviews, I was a bit worried but, never having been to Catalina, we went with the flow. The hotel contacted us for arrival info. They were explicit in letting us know to look for someone with a sign, they were there waiting. You can see the hotel from the docks, from the town, as it sits on top of the hill. I truly wish I got everyone's name that we encountered, but I only got Sylvia's. From pick up to check in, it was pleasant. Sylvia was great. All thru the weekend there were different young ladies at the front and each and everyone of them were pleasant and helpful!! Our room was GORGEOUS. We had a corner ocean view with a living room, huge bathroom, tub and separate shower. It was immaculate!! Bed and pillows were very comfortable!! We slept with the curtains open over looking the boats and Casino building. They give you water bottles, a small fridge, and a keurig. Here's some helpful hints if you go: Rooms-stairs and floors. Our room was in the 300's. You take the elevator to the 5th floor then walk up 2 flights of stairs with your luggage. Luckily we did t have that much and we are strong enough to do it but it's a bit of a huff going up the stairs with it. The pool is off to the side of the elevator. So quiet and peaceful. The restaurant is only open for breakfast!!! Breakfast---be kind be patient. This nice young man had to prep and get everything done himself most of them time. There's coffee, juice and hot water for tea. Assorted muffins, English muffins, bagels, yogurt. Usually bacon, sausage and diced potatoes. Things are limited depending on the shipment they receive. (No ketchup one morning). Eggs to order and pancakes. But it does take time as he's one guy. But so nice. Just allow yourself time. Or go into town if you don't want to wait!! We enjoyed sitting and having coffee as we waited for our eggs. Golf cart to and from town was great!! Keep the # handy!! Be aware there maybe wait times because of the boat arrivals and guests. The longest we waited was 15 min because we had bad timing with arrivals. But it was fine! It drops you off at town. There's a Vons nearby. We walked there and got pickies for our room to snack on. As well as some beverages and spirits. We had happy hour on our balcony and enjoyed the beautiful views!! Make reservations if you want to spend the day at Descanso beach club. The shuttle drops you in town and then you walk past the Casino building. Pick up is the same place. It's a beautiful walk. Towels are limited. BUT if we needed more towels or toilet paper, we just asked!! Overall the hotel is exquisite. It's older but well kept. It's so charming and has a lot of history. You have to appreciate the history of it and not expect to be staying at some trendy yuppie hip hop place. Go somewhere else. People are respectful of each other. Not demanding and just kind to each other when we went. The drivers were amazing. Take 1's and 5's for tipping here and there. Look-- this hotel isn't for everyone. Again if you're looking for some "hot new influencer place" this isn't it. The employees work their A**ES off!!! They do multiple jobs within the hotel. Be kind to them. Ask them how their day is. They in turn will treat you like family. We look forward to going back and seeing those nice people and beautiful rooms we enjoyed during our stay!! Two Words: underwhelming experience Honestly, I was pretty excited to spend my birthday here at Catalina Island. I was also excited that the front desk told me they would have someone holding a sign with our name as soon as we landed from Catalina express. That was not the case. Walked around a few times and they were parked on the other side . Wasn't greeted. However; the guy with long hair that drove us was nice/friendly. Actually one of the few at Zane that was nice. Shower curtain was dirty and there was no bath towels. Just hand towels. Even if there were, we didn't shower there because it felt dirty. Very dusty. While, the breakfast was really good, we just wished for some peace and quiet at 7AM, as two workers were speaking very loudly for half an hour. Couldn't hear my friend talk, even though we were sitting outside. Enrique dropped us off and we tipped him $5. He told us to call and he would come right away. We did call, and he said he would come. Waited about 20 minutes and then decided to walk back. It was freezing. When we were there, Enrique was gabbing with front desk. Neither of them greeted us. Zane is def promising, just needs quite a few attitude and staff changes. read more

Such a great little spot with walking distance to Avalon center. They have a golf cart that picks you up from the dock, and when available will take you to and from the hotel during your stay. Pool is temp controlled which is great since we went in March. read more

I spent $2193 for two nights in a "king suite with ocean view." This weekend was my babymoon and my wedding anniversary. I was willing to splurge because I wanted the most relaxing, romantic weekend away with the most amazing views. Unfortunately, I felt very misled. The pictures on the website were very misleading unless you actually got placed in the corner room, which we asked for but they did not give it to us :( Pros: Golf cart driver to and from downtown Pool has long hours Provides a basic continental breakfast Room is nice Massage therapist on site ($250 for a couples massage) Housekeeping was good They let us check in early at 2pm Pick-up/drop off service to and from Catalina express Cons: Pictures on website were misleading if you didn't get that specific room Tree was obstructing the view of the ocean No non-pork or vegetarian options for breakfast meat Driver service ends at 10:30pm, so you can't really stay out super late unless you can find a taxi or are willing to walk Spider in bathroom!!! Toilet was shut off without any warning from 9am-11am Walls are so thin that we heard the alarm from neighboring room go off at 6am Overall, I'm just extremely disappointed because I felt like I wasted a huge amount of money and didn't get what I was expecting at all :( read more

First time to Catalina, was putting together a birthday surprise weekend. I looked at many rentals. I opted for the Zane Grey Pueblo as the room looked great, as did the view and I like it has history on the island. On arriving, we were picked up and taken to Zane Grey. On arrival, it's huge. The old building on the right, a new giant add on to the left. I wasn't sure it was going to be what I hoped for. On check in, we are told to take the elevator up 5 floors and to go down a hallway to the right of the pool. Hmm. ok. Upon entering the hallway there's carpeting, room doors on each side and I'm thinking this is kind of motel 6 like. But, in going with the flow, we are here so let's just see what happens. Upon opening the door at the end of the hall...Wow!!! Then, opening the door to the private balcony to see the private patio and incredible views in every direction! WOW again. This room makes it feel like there is nothing and no one else in existence when you close the front door to it behind you. We opted to walk to and from town each time. It's a cardio work out on the way back. If you want them to take you to or pick you up from anywhere in a golf cart, they will. Each morning and night that view was different and insane incredible. And, the first morning, while sipping coffee on the patio, a deer just walked by, munched on a leaf, looked at us and then went on with its day. How great is that? Breakfast of omelets and other choices were all good. After a couple days, when it was time to go, they took us in a golf cart back to the heliport no problem. I would not call this a 5 star hotel, especially if you want more typical plastic type newer accommodations. And, if you expect/want staff pampering, champagne perks and so on during your stay. However, if you want romance, charm and history (with a big updated bathroom shower, tub, sinks etc) the room at the end of the hall (Honeymoon Suite) in the vintage building of The Zane Grey Pueblo is ideal. read more

We did a quick trip to Catalina for our anniversary and the photos of this hotel sold us on it. The staff were very friendly, the golf cart rides to and from town were so convenient, and although they have a hard checkout time of 11am, we left our baggage with them and scheduled someone to bring it to us and drop us off at the boat prior to our departure. Pros: Rides to and from downtown. Incredibly friendly staff. Clean-ish. Beautiful views from the hotel balconies. Free breakfast in the morning at the restaurant patio (coffee, bacon, sausage, muffins, bagels, etc..) Cons: The #1 negative and reason why this is a 3 star review is because the bed and pillows were SO uncomfortable in Room 109. It was an obviously a very old spring mattress and the pillows had zero support and would flatten out as soon as you put your head on it. Terrible night of sleep and back/neck pain the next day, thankfully we only stayed 1 night. Sadly, solely because of how uncomfortable the bed and pillows were I'm sorry to say I don't think I'd ever stay here again. The view from the Queen room (#109) was only from the entry so in order to see it we had to keep window and door shades raised and people walking by could see right into our room. The sink in our room wouldn't drain so the spit from brushing our teeth would just sit in there for 30+ minutes. read more

My wife and I splurged a bit and stayed one night here. We took the earliest ferry to the island and the hotel allowed us to store our bags and hang out at the pool until our room was ready (wasn't until checkin time, but seemed accommodating if your room is ready). Definitely expensive and I would think you'd expect more for the price but then again, Catalina isn't known for its luxury hotels. The service was nice, they have a driver who goes back and forth from downtown up to the hotel, he was super friendly and helpful, gave us numerous rides. The hotel is located up on the hill, not a fun walk from downtown town so the driver was nice. The complementary breakfast was nice, but nothing special, $800 a night maybe you'd expect more but we knew this going into it. We paid for the view and the view was great - has to be one of the best in town. It just depends what you're looking for, you can get better service and hotel experience for half the price somewhere else in town, but can't get that view! We stayed here for 4 days. We were a little worried since we brought our 2 young children with us, 2 and 5 years old. The hotel is a little far from town, about 10 minute walk. We actually didn't mind the walk, the kids loved it. Also the complimentary golf cart ride is awesome. The gentlemen that takes us to town and picks us up from town we're all wonderful. They're so nice and friendly. The staff were friendly and very helpful. We left my son's favorite stuffed toy in the room, we didn't realized it until we already landed in Long Beach. The hotel itself has a great vibe. I loved the decor, it was modern, quiet, good views, and updated. I loved being picked up at the boat dock with the golf cart, and the drivers were all so nice. It was a really great perk to have the free golf cart shuttle. Walking down hill to town was quick and easy but I would not walk up the hill to get back. Unfortunately, our stay was not without issues. First, we booked a king size mountain view room. The photos on their website show this room as being very large with a bath tub. The room was got was much smaller than expected and had no tub. It was very misleading as the room was not as spacious and romantic as I expected. I went down to the front desk to question the room and was just told that I am in their smaller room. Lucy at the front desk said she would leave a note for Kelly on the day shift because she didn't have any info, but there was never any follow up from Kelly. Second, when we got into bed, we noticed a couple small black bugs. It freaked us out so we pulled the sheets back to inspect further and found stains and hairs. I again called the front desk. The night maintenance guy and Lucy came up to strip the sheets, then found that the duvet cover was also dirty. The excuse was that housekeeping must have thought it was a stayover and not a checkout before we arrived. But honestly, even the mattress protector had stains and hair on it, so it was just not cleaned well. We went to the pool on our final day, but there were no pool towels. We called the front desk and they said they'd send someone up. 20 minutes later we were still waiting so had to call again before they arrived. Ultimately, for $500/night, my expectations were much higher. We could have stayed at a luxury resort in LA/OC for this price and gotten far better hospitality. We told them when we booked that we were visiting because we had to postpone our wedding which was supposed to be that weekend and we wanted a romantic getaway. Nothing was done to try and make it special for us. They wouldnt even grant us an early check in so we left our luggage when we went into town. It was only 2 small bags and a bottle of champagne. It would have been so easy for them to place the bags in the room and put our champagne on ice for us, but instead Kelly just opened the closet for us to grab our own bags when our room was ready. They would not give us a late check out. When we checked out, she made no mention of the issues we had with our room and never even asked how our stay was. For the price we paid, this should have been a lot better. The drivers were amazing. The night maintenance guy was also great. The rest of the staff needs a lot of training on luxury hospitality if they plan to charge these prices. read more
