Room 105

What a terrific experience! The room was spacious and clean with beautiful views. Everyone was courteous, helpful, and friendly. It's way up on the hill but they offered us many golf cart rides to and from downtown Avalon. While there is an elevator, we had to go up and down some stairs to get to our room. If you have mobility issues, I'd recommend calling before you book. A few perks I wasn't aware of (their website leaves much to be desired, but I also may have just missed it): * They offer a shuttle to/from the marina-- call ahead and they'll meet you at your boat * They offer a full breakfast, including fruit, pastries, and an omelette station * There is a third floor patio with tables and chairs One final tip: bring cash! We used Venmo to tip the drivers but I would have tipped more frequently if we'd had cash. There was absolutely zero expectation of tips, but these folks work hard and I wanted to thank them with a tip.

Ok, i have a ton of gorgeous pictures from this place. It has the most amazing views you could possibly imagine. And little hint, go the catalina off-season, it is the most relaxing place on earth. Don't worry about who Zane Grey is, what books he wrote, or why he decided on a slightly falic (triangular) pool. It is built beautifully into a hill. Oh!! And the beds we're like the most comfortable things in the world. The room was great, along with sandals and robes, it's just a very comfortable room with plenty of space to relax. The staff (remember, this is an island, islands are known for bad service because...whatcha gonna do?) were all great!! From ownership, management, and all the way down, they made it a very comfortable vacation. Also, they pick u up when you're downtown and bring u up the hill to the hotel. The pool is freezing in the winter but great for a polar plunge!! Anyway, the staff makes you feel at home, this is btw, by far, the best hotel on Catalina!! I've stayed on that island a lot, and nowhere else comes close. Breakfast, amenities, etc...Great place to stay!! I won't stay anywhere else when I go to catalina!! And if you need to take a boat, go with the Flyer, more good people.

Absolutely loved our stay with my fiancé. We booked the ocean-view suite and the views were absolutely spectacular. We also enjoyed a private couples massage with Ramona and Allison, which was an incredible and truly relaxing experience.

Stayed here with my husband and friends to celebrate a big event. We loved the location and view of this hotel! Plus our room was amazing. Loved the golf cart service to and from the hotel, and how they transported our luggage off the boat and back to it. Amazing service. The bed was super comfortable, as were the linens and pillows. View was gorgeous. Air conditioner worked great, and the bathroom was spacious. Complimentary breakfast was great. Areas for improvement - please heat the pool or provide a hot tub.

I booked this hotel directly over the phone as I wanted to chat about my options for rooms that were available. I was talking to a young her girl, I knew the second I arrived who I booked with. Her voice and demeanor totally fit her when I saw her. She suggested a pricier room because of the view- as this was a special occasion, both mine and my daughter's (20) birthday-- I splurged. I called two days after booking and gave the front desk staff my time of arrival from the Catalina Express as I had some questions about bag storage. They actually told me that they would pick us up (such a nice touch!) and that we could leave our bags and also grab breakfast and if our room was ready check in early-- if not just leave the bags and explore the island. I have been there several times but this is my daughter's first trip. We arrive on island and nobody is there to pick up. I call-- several times. Straight to voicemail. I call another online listed number and a male picks up "central reservations" I politely ask "are you at the hotel?" He says "central reservations" agitated. I again, ask- "I am so sorry, are you at the hotel?" Again, "CENTRAL RESERVATIONS" I said that I didn't know what that meant and that I was trying to reach the hotel directly but it keeps going to voicemail and he says "it means I'm in central reservations" I say, "I'm sorry, please don't be so rude- I arrived and nobody is here to pick me up and nobody is answering at the hotel- maybe you have another phone number for them?" He gives me another number as my daughter notices a golf cart pull around with the hotel name- he's holding up names but none are ours, I walk over and explain and he tells me I'm not on the list but get in. We head to the hotel to check in, she says she didn't have our arrival time listed and they must've dropped the ball -bummer nothing about our birthdays is mentioned either and not that I was expecting anything elaborate but I stay a lot of places... they could've actually just said "happy birthday" lol. I'm actually surprised that for what I paid this is the most unassuming front desk area ever. They tell us to put our bags in a closet that kinda smells musty-- ok. Our room isn't ready, we change and the driver drops us in town. Pro here: the transportation to/from town is free from hotel and they are very friendly-- CARL though was a stand out! So knowledgeable and kind!! After calling to check many hours later our room is ready-- we head back and well, the view is wild. It's a beautiful view. The room is fine... but the view is gorgeous. So that night is when things just go reallll bad. We start to hear what sounds like scraping of furniture. Turns out to be wild sex complete with screaming. When we go down to complain the second time (front desk did all she could here) they give us another room (honeymoon suite) but this room is actually worse than ours. The walls are so thin it actually sounds like the people are in the room having a conversation. We can hear them vaping-- like actually inhaling/exhaling. We don't even put our bags in the room bc we just planned on sleeping there as they told us the people above our actual room were checking out the next day. At approximately midnight I think we just gave up and went back to our original room to get some sleep it was just so so bad! The next morning they told us they had problems with them the night before as well... so why not tell us? Ugh. Next night, we get ready to go to sleep after a late birthday dinner and what do you know-- people in that room and more sex- these guests were not as wild as the previous night though! Luckily they only lasted a good hour ... then they were just up all night back and forth. I have never had such a terrible nights stay and for the amount of money that we paid it's pathetic. When we checked out early this morning she didn't even say "good morning" "how was your stay" literally NOTHING. She just put our bags on the golf cart and drove us to the boat. I don't know if she didn't want to know or if she was just rude but I'm not sure I have ever complained about a hotel before this was by far the worst hotel experience I've ever had-- coming from someone whose exhusband once booked Hooters in Las Vegas. So so so bad.

The toilet paper holder was falling off the wall

Stayed here for 2 nights during the Catalina Island JazzTrax 2025. It's located in a hill with ocean, mountain, and Casino views. There is a golf cart that takes you down to the center of Avalon for dining and shopping. The staff members are excellent. Everyone from the cart drivers, front office, housekeepers, was excellent. Oh.. complimentary breakfast on weekends! The kitchen staff was also nice and made my omelette perfectly. The room was clean and spacious. The bed was comfy. Separate shower room from the toilet. My only complaint: the drapes did not close completely. The track was broken. I had to use hair clips to close the drapes. I need blackout drapes in order to sleep. I took pictures and reported to the problem. Hopefully it was fixed. If you like a peaceful environment surrounded by nature, this is the perfect getaway.

I stayed here for the first time exactly one year ago. Little has changed with the property, although what has changed was not all for the better. I heard the hotel now has a new manager. To reintroduce the hotel, it opened in 2019 after reconfiguring author Zane Grey's former Catalina home into the historic wing of the hotel, and building a newer wing with all ocean-view suites. The building that houses the lobby, breakfast room, rooftop event space and a few rooms is also new, as is the pool and large deck area. The hotel still has a golf cart for pick-up or travel to the downtown stop by Bluewater Grill or to the ferry dock. Sylvia, who I met last year, still works the front desk, as does Kelly, both of whom were friendly and helpful. When I left fairly early to catch the 7 :50 am ferry, the security guard took me because the regular driver had not started work yet. Overall, there were no issues with the staff. Where I did have some minor issues were with the room and breakfast. For both my stays, I preferred the ambiance and character of the historic wing. Last year I booked the Honeymoon Suite, which was very large and had what may have been the original mosaic-tiled fireplace and a spacious terrace. This year I had the Queen Ocean Suite, which was smaller but still roomy and had a large balcony with a better view than the Honeymoon Suite, especially of the Casino and Chimes Tower. Both had mini-fridges and large bathrooms. Several things in the room were not working properly: the electrical outlet in the bathroom, the TV remote (I had to use the buttons on the cable box), the safe (was open but locked). I could have called for assistance but did not. Overall wear and tear in the room and some of the public areas was fairly high, probably very few things have been replaced since opening. Not the hotel's responsibility, but the guests in the adjacent room talked loudly on their balcony well into the night and also were smoking marijuana. Luckily they checked out after my first night. I did notice some improvements. The outdoor staircase that accesses all levels (except the newer wing's upper floors) is now complete so one doesn't have to rely on the single elevator. The desk area in the historic wing now has vending and ice machines, plus a microwave. The former lounge area here has become a small guest room. Breakfast has always been kind of basic and pre-fab. Commercially made baked goods (muffins, bagels, English muffins), cut melon salad, whole apples, oranges and bananas, cereals, hot scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon, potatoes, coffee and orange juice. Last year on weekends there was someone making pancakes, but not this year. I still love the hotel's location above downtown Avalon and its historic nature. I just hope more attention will be paid to the maintenance of the property in the future.

We had a chance to stay at this wonderful place for a few days. Incredible view, we could see both the mountains and the ocean. The swimming pool, breakfast, customer service, breakfast was excellent. Alexi was specially very kind to us and helped us out whenever we encountered minor issues to accommodate us. Hotel staff made sure to make us feel comfortable. I can't wait to have another opportunity to go on a trip and stay there again. Thanks to all shuttle drivers, hotel staff for the pleasant experience.

Chime tower

My family and I were staying at Catalina Island for a few days. We found Zane Grey hotel and liked it for the most part. Pros: The room had BEAUTIFUL views Free golf cart transportation (only to traffic circle) Breakfast buffet Kind staff Cons: Walls are really thin and could hear next door guests Pool is not heated Chime tower rings every 15 mins which is not super annoying but a bit of a disturbance Tv didn't work Overall, I recommend this hotel but you may not love it.

My partner and I went to Catalina Island to celebrate an anniversary, and we really enjoyed our stay at Zane Grey. The week before our trip, I was messaged regarding our arrival to the island, as they wanted to arrange for our pick-up from the ferry. Once we got off, a staff member was waiting for us with my name printed on a sign. It was incredibly convenient and thoughtful. The hotel itself is located in the hills right above Avalon. There were gorgeous views of the island both from our room and from the back of the pool region. Unfortunately, the elevator was not working when we arrived, so we had to carry our luggage up to the fourth floor. Apparently, the power goes off quite frequently. Our room was immaculate, and the bedding was very comfortable. However, the room was advertised as being soundproof, and it was far from it. We could hear voices from the room above us, and we were woken early in the morning and bothered in the evening with loud stomping coming from above. Additionally, we tried to enjoy the fire pits by the pool at night, but there seemed to be a loud party going on in the rooms adjacent. The breakfast was typical - some cooked dishes, commercial pastries, coffee, and orange juice. Overall, the staff was very friendly, the golf cart shuttle service was convenient, and our stay was pleasant. However, I might come with some ear plugs if you are bothered by noise.

Such a beautiful hotel, amazing staff, the free shuttle service is a necessity and wow very appreciated. This hotel has the best view by far and with the shuttle service it's just like you're in town.

Last year, Vista and Snug were under the same ownership, which is no longer the case. Snug now has closer affiliation with Hotel Aurora a bit up the hill. Snug is a cozy and charming 6-room inn. There is staff on duty during the day; welcome in-room wine and snacks are provided as well as daily continental breakfast. There is no staff on the premises at night, although someone is on-call. My stay was lovely and somewhat surreal. I visited during the February rains which caused the cancellation of all Catalina Express boats on 2 days during my Avalon visit. This forced guests here for the long Valentines/Presidents Day weekend to leave early or relocate. I ended up being the sole guest for my 2-night visit! And with minimal visitors on the island, evenings were also pretty quiet, despite being right above the main drag (Crescent). Snug does provide earplugs and eye masks if needed. I moved up my arrival date due to the weather and Snug was able to accommodate me, even offering the same room, which was the Santa Catalina room, the inn's "crown jewel" situated on the corner with two large bay windows, one facing Avalon Bay with Casino, Bay and pier views, the other with a built-in window seat facing Sumner and the hills above. All rooms have a fireplace and deep soaking jetted tub. The rooms are not particularly large but are full of charm, coziness and warmth. No robes or slippers, but there were 2 clock/music/alarm machines. Complimentary reusable water bottles are provided; there's a water/ice machine in the hall. The welcome snacks offered were olives, pretzels and high-end nuts (i.e., no peanuts). The continental breakfast was quite ample and includes a small loaf of warm banana bread, yogurt, fresh berries, granola, milk, juice and coffee or tea. You fill out an order slip as to what you want exactly and what time you want it delivered. There are 6 delivery times for the 6 rooms, which of course was not an issue for my stay. There is a common room with a sofa, fireplace and machine for coffee and tea. There is a closet for luggage storage, a public restroom and umbrellas. The front door is open 8-5, key access is needed in the off-hours. Shout-outs to the great staff I met--Jackie, Destiny and especially Johnny at the front desk and housekeeper/breakfast preparer Alicia. Overall a fabulous stay. I usually split my time on the island between Mt Ada and a property "downtown". Snug Harbor has moved to the top of my downtown list!

The location is perfect, close to diving spots and great food, and the attention to detail is exceptional.

They offer a continental breakfast each morning out on the patio, which is a peaceful spot to just sit, enjoy the firepit, and koi pond. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, friendly and accommodating. Evelyn was awesome, thank you for the smiles and truly wonderful service throughout our stay. Off the boat, we went to drop our luggage to store until check-in. Fortunately we were there during the week, and our room was ready earlier, so we chilled a bit before heading out to explore and have lunch. They also held our bags upon check out. After we returned from an adventure, they allowed us to sit on the patio and enjoy the sun before we had to be at our boat. We couldn't have asked for a better stay, and we will absolutely go back. Just a note for anyone who has mobility issues. The hotel is awesome, but note that you have to walk part way up a little hill to reach the stairs to the small lobby. There are stairs to the lobby and depending on which floor your room is located, there is no elevator, just stairs. For someone in a wheelchair or needing a walker and unable to climb stairs, it is not doable.

The only suggestion I would make is in regard to the small window that is by the door connecting to the other room. The window is right by a street light. There needs to be a black out blind on that as the light shines through the shut blind The bed was extremely comfortable. The shower had wonderfully hot water with great pressure. All boats to and from Catalina Island were cancelled on 2 days of my visit, forcing other guests to change their travel plans. I ended up being the sole guest for all 3 nights of my stay here! With some whispers of Mt Ada being haunted (but not as many as Banning House Lodge in Two Harbors), I was a bit concerned, but fortunately had no paranormal experiences. To briefly review Mt Ada's history, it was once the Catalina home of William Wrigley Jr. and family, of chewing gum and Chicago Cubs fame. He was instrumental in putting Catalina "on the map", and his descendants still own the Catalina Island Company, which runs Mt Ada, Hotel Atwater, Pavilion Hotel and Banning House Lodge, as well as other businesses. All my stays at Mt Ada have been with the Company, although it was previously run as a private B&B. Mt Ada still runs as a B&B, as opposed to a hotel. It's a pricey stay but has many many perks that justify the expense. These include transportation to and from the boat or helicopter terminals, use of a golf cart throughout your stay, daily made-to-order breakfast and lunch, pre-breakfast continental breakfast, afternoon wine/cheese/charcuterie, 24-hour butler's pantry with snacks like gelato, chips, cookies and popcorn plus alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, discounts on Island Company tours and activities. Currently there are about 4 main people interacting with guests at Mt Ada, plus "behind the scenes" kitchen and housekeeping staff. My past reviews have mentioned a stay here is more like a visit to a home, as opposed to a hotel. There will be times when you may not see any staff (especially at night). But Pierre, Liz, Tim and Yoli (Yollie?) work their hardest to accommodate guest needs--they are the chauffeurs, front desk, waiters, luggage handlers, concierges, etc. I applaud them all. One of Mt Ada's pluses is its location on the hill (Mt Ada) above Avalon Bay, even above the main Bay viewpoint that all the rental golfcarts stop at (traffic jams are common here). It's quite peaceful, although in busy times the noise from "downtown" does carry uphill. Mt Ada has 6 rooms. The room I booked was the Grand Suite, Mr. Wrigley's former bedroom. It's the largest room, with a separate living and bedroom, a bathroom with a separate shower and tub, and a large terrace above the first floor terrace. It has a fireplace, as do 3 other rooms, and a raised bed that requires stairs to access, as does one other room. The living room has an antique "radio" that is seen in photos with Mr. Wrigley. There are radio stations hand-written on it; I was appalled to see "graffiti" defacing this historic relic. The terrace is fabulous, but alas the weather prohibited much use; I feared the high winds would blow the cushions on the chaise lounges over the railing. Even the dining tables on the first floor terrace were stored; in more temperate weather it's the loveliest place to enjoy breakfast or lunch. The breakfast and lunch menus have some new items and some old faves. Once again a fabulous and peaceful stay. Thanks again to all the staff. With the Pavilion Hotel reopening soon, Mt Ada may be the next property to undergo renovations. I hope it does not lose its charm or homey character.

We wanted the same experience and the same room. We got a Studio Suite room in the back of the hotel in the upper private area. The last time we stayed here, our room seemed bigger, and I was a bit disappointed about how small the room seemed compared to last time, but we ended up really enjoying our stay. The room was clean, although housekeeping did not clean our room the first time we asked the front desk. Before our third and final night, we went up to the front desk and told them we were extremely upset our room was not clean the day before when we had asked them to clean it so they promptly came up and cleaned our room. The linens were clean, white, and fresh and the robe was nice though short. The towels were comfy and clean and they gave us more towels when our room wasn't clean the second night we stayed after we asked them. The outside the patio was amazing. We had a gorgeous view of the city behind us and the ocean in front of us. We loved to sit outside in the comfy chairs and just soak up the view and drink coffee/tea that was provided for us with a Kuerig machine. We had plenty of free water bottles and ice and kept asking for more and more because we drink like fish and they gave it to us all for free. The room had a couch and a little table, but the table was too short for my husband to use his laptop. He said he would have liked a bigger table, but we made do with what we had. Also, there were no nightstands in the room and the closet space was very, very small, just a small wooden box in the room with only enough space to hang our jackets. There were no real drawers to place our clothes in so we left them in the luggage the entire time. The bathroom was made of beautiful Italian marble with a large bathtub that we filled to the top with warm water for our nightly bath soaks. The only thing we didn't like about the bathroom was that the toilet was right next to the wall, giving us little room to sit and do our business and the sink had no area around it to place our bathroom essentials except for a really, really small glass area above the sink to place our toothbrushes. We took really long naps while we were there with the air conditioner on full blast and really loved our bed. It was sooooo comfortable. Also, our room had a refrigerator where we placed food we bought from the market and left over food from the restaurant. We are definitely coming back again to the Bellanca hotel for a simlar Studio Suite room, hopefully next time, a bigger one light last time, but even though there were things we didn't like about this room, we may request the same room again because the view outside looking towards the ocean was amazing. Oh, and the hotel gave us two free drink vouchers worth $15 each for mixed drinks at the Naughty Fox which we used and enjoyed.

Hotel staff is rude. They charged extra to check in 30 minutes early even though the room was clean…read moredna empty and waiting. for close to $1000 per night, the bathrooms are old and dingy -- like from the 70s. The internet sucks and the front desk is useless. They sent text messages to ask about our stay and when I replied, they ignored me. Customer service not good.
