Oh my, ordered dinner and it was disappointing. They have what they call a rack and a half of BBQ ribs, they were quite old, dry and just not good. Old leftovers just leave you asking why?? Definitely not a full rack even. The augratin potatoes were actually cheesy hash browns. Good flavor for those cheesy hash browns. Only reason for this post is to caution your expectations. All around try good experience of this place - the service, the food, the prices, the atmosphere, and the view. I highly recommend it. We had a full rack rib special for 1895 and salad was green and leafy and yummy, the au gratin potatoes as usual are delicious. Cheesy and wonderful flavor. we've had great burgers and fries here too. the ribs were meaty and tender and had good flavor. The place is a bit outdated but the food does not disappoint! My husband had the walleye and I had the half rack of ribs. Dinners also come with a side of potato and either a salad or soup with breadstick. Their Hungarian mushroom soup was incredible! Salad was fresh. The ribs fell off the bone and the bbq sauce was tasty! The walleye was also great- a huge portion and the tartar sauce was incredible! Not sure if it's homemade but didn't taste like the junk in a bottle to us. Very reasonable prices- we were impressed and would definitely come back. read more

We used to look forward to going to the Cedar Chest, but now feel very uncomfortable. The staff does not like the new owner, they are often short staffed so when our larger group walks in, they make us feel unwelcome. Last night at 9:30, we stopped in with a group of 10. They were starting to clean up one side of the bar and had put the chairs up. The bar and the other side were full with hit or miss spots available. We asked if we could take the chairs down and sit there. They said no. We left. It's disappointing after frequenting there so often. We had been there earlier in the day and spent over $300 on drinks and food. We will find a new place to go read more

I recently visited after it changed ownership, and unfortunately, my experience was less than pleasant. The new owner's behavior left much to be desired. Rude Comments: The owner made derogatory remarks about elderly locals, implying that their money doesn't matter because they'll eventually pass away. This lack of empathy is concerning. Unfamiliar Signage: My grandmother, a regular customer, was scolded for not noticing a new sign requesting patrons to wait for seating. However, this sign was rarely used before, causing confusion. Aggressive Behavior: The owner's yelling at my grandmother was reminiscent of a drill sergeant, which is unacceptable in a dining establishment. I hope the new owner takes customer feedback seriously and improves their approach. As patrons, we deserve respect and a pleasant dining experience. I hope my review encourages positive change. And if it doesn't I hope this new owner learns his place in this town. Because the rumors going around by is 'locals' are far from pleasant. read more

Staying nearby at a cabin and stopped here with a few friends for a quick dinner. Food was fine. Leaving 2 stars because it wasn't a covid friendly place. Our server was either not wearing her mask, or it was under her nose/chin the whole time. Customers were not required to wear masks when they entered the establishment and we got a lot of stares for wearing ours while we were seated. Again, food was fine, but I'd recommend take-out if you're considering eating here. read more

Celebrated a birthday today at Cedar Chest. Very disappointed in the service and food. French onion soup has to be sent back twice because it was cold. BBQ ribs were burnt beyond recognition. My husband and I really like this place! Nothing fancy but great bar food, decently priced beer, and friendly staff. The patio looks right out over the lake and is dog friendly, cute spot to sit. Bar has nice TVs if you want to belly up and watch sports. We had the chicken strips and a wrap that were both great. read more

I've driven by here my whole life. The parking lot is always busy. Even during COVID people didn't hesitate to come in. My friends and I came in on a summer Monday at 11:30am. We had a couple day drinks, fried appetizers, and played some cardboard crack (pull tabs). I felt safe on the patio and our server had on a full plastic shield. (We wore masks inside). FYI no patrons wore masks but it's in a county where nobody does. We had a blast winning money, chillin with lake views, eating fries, chicken strips, and cheese curds. Our server thought of everything and we needed nothing. The drinks tasted a little weird from possibly the ice? We caught a strong mineral/iron flavor. Us city folks are so picky ...I'm still giving them a perfect review. The Cedar Chest is EVERYTHING you want in a divey, cabin, on the lake, bar/restaurant, with locals and cardboard crack. St. Patrick's Day dinner. Something simple, good & quick. Cedar Chest delivered even whilst filled with various states of celebrations by a packed house of customers. Our server kicked ass! Less than two minutes after being seated at a two chair high top she took our beverage order. Less than five minutes seated our order was in the kitchen. Couple of fresh, hand formed burgers and a side of onion rings. Big burgers, cooked as requested, served hot & ready for condiments. Fresh cut fries are wonderful & the batter coated fries were delicious. Now if they could pave the parking lot ... the spot would be the best! read more

Just moved to Breezy and this has quickly become one of our favorite places! Good food, good prices and nice people!

Pretty good place, I ordered the Shrimp and Steak, and they were both very good. The cheese curds were also very good. My only complaints were that the water had a very faint metal taste which I didn't notice until one of my fellow diners pointed it out to me. All in all, if you are in the area, I'd recommend this place. read more

After reading the reviews, I hesitantly agreed to go to Cedar Chest with my husband and 9 year old son. (My hubby has taken fishing buddies over the years, and said it is always fun.) Fun it was! We sat out on the deck (new?) and talked with all the tables around us while we played pull tabs and entered a meat raffle. (The topic that started all the chit chat ~ who knew that they raffle meat in Minnesota??) I had the nightly special and au gratin potatoes, neither my usual heathy far, but delish. My son had the bacon cheese burger, & maybe the best fries in the area. My husband's French dip was fair. The service was great, prices good, the lake view beautiful ~ and a very fun & friendly crowd. We will be back! read more

Cedar Chest is this one of the most underrated spots to eat in the lakes area. If you are looking for dinner with a great lake view, quality food, and great staff/service you can find it here. The place is more of dive bar with great food than fancy supper club but I think that adds to the charm and I wouldn't hesitate to bring my family here. read more

My Boyfriend and I started frequenting this place back in 2013 when we first bought a lake home in the area. What we liked about the place was that for the most part drinks were a decent price and the food was pretty good. We especially liked the Friday Night Fish Fry. Whenever we had out of town guests we brought them here. After a while we became less enamored. There is a very cliquish group there and they are not friendly even though we made some overtures. Anyway, last weekend we had out of town guests so I called the Cedar Chest early on a Friday and asked for a reservation for a nice table on the deck. We arrived a few minutes early and ALL THE TABLES WERE OCCUPIED. We got stuck in the way back corner table. I went in to talk to the owner who was tending bar. When I explained the situation she said it was too bad but all the tables got taken by people who just sat down. I said I had a reservation. She said she couldn't help where people sit. I asked her what was the point of the reservation then. She had nothing else to say. No apology. Nothing. I wanted to leave but everyone was hungry and was looking forwad to the fish. I won't go back ever. I am sure they won't miss my business and won't care. read more

Stopped in on a Sunday evening for the broasted chicken special. The service is a little disorganized, but the food more than made up for it I'm terms of quality and, perhaps, quantity. The broasted chicken was delicious. Crisp, moist, and most importantly, hot. The mashed potato side with gravy was comfort food heaven. Not a great fan of the Rene beans, but repurposed them in an egg bake for breakfast, so I can forgive them. My biggest concern here is the hygiene. Just doesn't seem clean enough. I wouldn't try them on a busy Friday night, but for an off night they seem to be okay. read more

Located slightly south of Crosslake the Cedar Chest provides a nice selection of nightly specials. However, 1st impression is bad for non smokers as all guests have to run through a gauntlet of smokers hanging out at a small deck at the entrance. Once inside you'll find a typical up north bar filled with locals and a dining area overlooking the lake. Some of the guests orderd the Chow Mein special that included a side of white rice and an egg roll. Chow mein was good with crispy noodles but for the third time (for some guests) the restaruant claimed to be out of Duck or Sweet Sour Sauce for the egg roll. To this we all agreed was BS it being the third time we heard the excuse. Another table who ordered the special heard us talking about the lack of this normal condiment heartlly agreed. Other fare was good with kudo's given to the home cut fries and the french dip. They might deserve a higher star rating but until they eliminate the gauntlet and don't have the servers BS the partrons about running out of condiments one star is all they'll get from our group. read more

First time here and enjoyed it. Definitely a local joint. There for dinner and got to partake in happy hour. They give you what looks like a pull tab to determine the cost of your drink. I got two drinks for $1.00 each! My steak was overcooked but tasted good and my baked potato was delicious! Husband had a pizza and it was decent, although likely frozen. We have been going here for years, and have never had a bad meal. It's the best bang for the buck anywhere in the area. Their broasted chicken is my favorite, but we have gotten compliments on their walleye, tacos and mussels as well. Good portions, friendly and efficient wait staff, although sometimes, when they are very busy (which is quite often) there can be a bit of a wait for your order. They have added a nice outside deck recently overlooking the lake, so they do now have outside seating! It's like a supper club in terms of selection and quality at bar and grill prices. read more

I love this place. I have never had broasted chicken before my visit. It's amazing, good cheap wine and the basement is very kid friendly.

The bartender was extremely friendly and gave us free pretzels. Drinks are reasonably priced! Would go back!

The Cedar Chest has to be the best bar and restaurant in Crosslake if you want good food and reasonable drink prices. The bartenders and servers are very attentive and the prices are very reasonable. The hamburgers are so big and juicy you have a hard time eating one even with two hands. I look forward to going back! read more
