Coffee tasted burnt I tried to get over the taste but that was tough. The cappuccino was made from an old style machine, it wasn't fresh. Super sweet and creamy. Most likely powdered creamer milk. Oops. I thought I'd get an actual cappuccino. Silly of me to not see the machine beforehand. But some spots use these retro things. Breakfast was okay overall. Pancakes were good. Soft, warm and huge. Definitely liked the maple syrup over the blueberry syrup. I also liked their veggie garden omelette which was loaded with fresh vegetables. I was not used to having sliced black canned olives in my eggs so that was definitely new to me. Hashbrowns were quite brown and had a good crisp to them. We asked for extra crispy and they were warm and fresh. Corned beef was good too. Overall, a decent breakfast in a quiet part of town. They have a large menu so there's something for everyone. Although it was 10:30 in the middle of the week, there was a steady stream of diners coming and Most of our group ordered "the riser", which is a HUGE plate of eggs, meat (bacon for us), hash browns, and toast. The portion sizes were large! Two muffins were ordered with our group. Poppy seed and chocolate. They were both large and warm. The pancake was the size of a plate. It was light and fluffy. My family has owned a cabin up near this area for years but this is the first time we tried out this hole in the wall breakfast spot. We started off with a homemade caramel roll and it was to die for and probably one of the best rolls I've ever had. I had the garden omelet with hash-browns and toast and it was incredible. There was just enough egg to compliment the veggies inside. Everything was very timely and the server was super knowledgeable on everything on the menu. For those who didn't want anything in the menu, they had a Buffett option that looked awesome! We love this place for an always solid breakfast! Our kids beg us to go here on our cabin trips. A fun eclectic inside that you wouldn't know existed from the unassuming exterior. We have never had anything disappoint us. From the pancakes, eggs Benedict, chicken fried steak, egg sandwich, the classic Riser meal... and my daughter says it's the best hot chocolate she's ever had!! This place has amazing breakfast! The food is made fresh and with care, waiters are super friendly, and the prices are generally at least $2-3 cheaper than elsewhere. It's a darn shame if you don't try the "local" which consists of pancakes, 2 eggs, and choice of meat. The pancakes are homemade and nice and fluffy, honestly some of the best pancakes I've ever had. If you really want to leave the place full, go for the "riser". This plate consists of 2 eggs, toast, hash browns, and choice of meat. Small town cafes in Minnesota are awesome. Viddles and Joe does not disappoint. I was here last year for breakfast which was outstanding. And yes there is a wait. But worth it. This time I stopped in for lunch. Went with one of the featured soups, potato, upon waitress's suggestion. And man was it good. Housemade you can tell. Real chunks of potato and bits of ham. There are 2 major events in Hackensack. July is Moondance Festival. August is a Book and Art Festival. Right across the entrance to the Art festival is V&J. Coming from the cities, stop on your way in before you check in wherever, and stop in on your way home for breakfast after you check out. Fabulous home cooking. I got the fried chicken since my favorites in the TC closed I haven't had much. It was perfect. I forget the soup I had but it was great. Exiting the town we were early enough to beat the buffet, they were just getting it started, I had a basic bacon and eggs and they do it right. Fish fry special on Fridays naturally. Great breakfast. Been a long time since I had an Eggs Benedict this good. Large portions on the breakfasts I saw walk by. Equipped with your token old codger at the counter complaining about the Government loud enough for everyone to hear. I always use to go to this restaurant as a kid to get breakfast with my family and it was always fabulous. I just went here today with my boyfriend. We ordered sausage and gravy with scrambled eggs and a side of sausage with hash browns and a Carmel roll. The Carmel roll came first and it was delicious. I highly recommend those. Our sausage gravy and eggs came out, the gravy had no flavor at all. There was A LOT of pepper in the gravy and it has no taste to it. Salt didn't even help. I decided I wasn't going to try and eat the rest of my biscuits, so I start eating my eggs. I got halfway and the middle was raw (I ordered scrambled). I ate the hash Browns and the Carmel roll, that was about it. For how busy the restaurant was we got our food in a decent time. The quality just wasn't there. We had a great server and she was nice, I was just very dissatisfied with our food. read more

I have always come to Hackensack but have never stopped in till very recently. I was very impressed with the food and service. Staff is so incredibly kind and helpful, and the food is great. Viddles and Joe is one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at. I have gone to many places, but rarely can I find great food at a great price. The pancakes are like eating dessert for breakfast, the burgers are juicy and creative (like the Texan that has BBQ, bacon, fried onions, and Swiss cheese or the slaw burger with homemade coleslaw on top!) and the pizza is the best in the area with toppings from the usual to the not-so-much (like onion rings). I recommend this restaurant to ANYONE looking for great food in a laid-back atmosphere.
