Service: I requested salsa and Texas Pete for my hash browns. There was no hesitation on their part to supply my request. When I ran out of drink, I only had to make eye contact with the service staff, and my request was answered immediately. My take on this place overall: A family run business whose present heir manages it with an eye for detail in all its operating aspects. Rude waitresses. We sat at a table while the 2 waitresses walked past us at least 10 times. They waited on customers that came in after us. When I asked one of the waitresses if we could order, she turned to the other waitress and said, "this lady can't wait, can you take her order"? The waitress then came to take our order. She never apologized for the wait. She acted as if I were inconveniencing her. As for the food, the sausage links and hash browns tasted as if they were cooked in a pan that hadn't been cleaned in awhile. They had an old oil taste to them. We won't ever go back. Pretty sad. I visited this place for breakfast this morning. The place was nearly empty but it was mid morning and the rush was probably over. I was seated immediately and the waitress took and served my drink immediately. I then placed my order, sausage and cheese omelet. The service was lightning fast and I received my omelet in under 5 minutes!! The omelet was reasonable in size. The omelet sausage was just cut up sausage links. I really prefer fresh sausage. The hash browns were crispy and tasted good. Whole wheat toast was simple bread. As cabin owners on a nearby lake, we have been here several times. The food is average cafe breakfast fare. They do offer lunch, but our only experience is with breakfast. Compared to other places in the area, it does seem a little overpriced. I wish there was an a la carte breakfast menu, as someone who eats a light breakfast I hate to pay $11 for a huge plate. When I inquired about this, I was given a firm NO (our server could have been a little friendlier in my opinion). Food was mediocre and a bit overpriced. The waitress was very friendly and the place was hospitable. However, it was disconcerting that the waitress and the rest of the employees were not wearing masks and there was no social distancing with the table setup. We are in the midst of a pandemic that is very real, and I found it irresponsible to not protect the patrons of the cafe. Minnesota has strict orders and this restaurant is clearly out of compliance. Even if you don't care about government orders or believe that the virus is a problem, many of your customers do, so I wouldn't recommend anyone who understands the severity of COViD-19 to eat at this restaurant until their owner and employees take it seriously. read more

It's a typical greasy spoon Cafe so I understand that and not too critical as it is. Great place for exactly what the name is. It's for outdoorsmen who want to fill the belly with home cooked breakfast. Asked for crispy bacon but I guess I have to ask for it burnt at most greasy spoons they pre-make the bacon so you can never get it the right way. Either way 5 outta five. I had read the reviews, from about 6 months ago and they didn't sound promising. But after a dismal experience at Viddles & Joe in Hackensack, we were not going back there. We entered a very clean and organized cafe on the main drag in Walker. We were waited on promptly and served very quickly. And the food was great! Like other reviewers, the hash browns were excellent. I had the eggs Benedict and Doll had the egg sandwich. Everything was fresh, reasonably priced and breakfast included the coffee for free, and it was good coffee too. Can't wait to get back! read more

Worst service I've had in a very long time. Can't believe it. There were 4 of us that went in one of us has a broken leg he used a cart to help him get around we sat in back at the 6 person table. They do have a sign in it that says 5 it more people but we figured with his cart and broken leg this would be easier. The lady gave us our menus, then noticed a family of 6 showed up, she ripped the menus out of our hands told us we have to move she had a big party just door up. The other family had already say at the other 2 4 person tables and seemed fine until she went over there and ripped their menus out of their hands. They seemed to be just as embarrassed as we were. Small cafe located in walker mn. As you walk in you pick your own seat. There wasn't anyone on the floor when me and my husband walked in, so we weren't greeted right away. The menu is short and sweet as they are only open till 2pm they only offer breakfast and lunch. I ordered myself a western omelet at 10.95 while my husband got the 6oz steak and eggs at 11.95. Very quiet when we went in. The waitress was nice. The food took a decent amount of time for cooking and getting to us. Unfortunately they don't allow any substitutions for any of their meals. So it's, " you get what you get" there. My husband thought his food was good. I did feel my omelet had to many juices/grease with it. Overall the place wasn't too bad of a stop. We have found the staff to be very friendly and pleasant even when the place is packed. We try to have breakfast there 3 or 4 times a week while at the lake. And, we have been doing that for over thirty years. Smiles from someone who worked there at some point during our visit would have been welcomed, but that aside, ordered 2 bfast specials and a side of pancake. We ordered our eggs different, both over done and pancakes rubbery. Did not complain as they were edible. Check received with a only total including tax. Thought we may been charged wrong. Went to pay and asked the price for the pancake the price was stated and payment delivered no questions asked, then very rudely she continued to say prices are going up and have gone up and our menu prices will be going up again......hmmm being in the service industry as well probably should not have been said like that or maybe not even at all. My family and I have been coming to this place for breakfast for years. If you want a great local, up north Minnesota feel, this is the place for it. Breakfast is good and cheap! The portions are pretty generous and the service is incredibly fast for how perpetually busy it always seems. We practically never run out of coffee as refills come around before you can even get to the bottom of your cup. I'm sort of a purist so I always get the pancakes, but they have great omelets as well I'm told. This place is right in the center of town and if you're up at the lake I definitely recommend stopping in there. AND as if it weren't enough, coffee is free when you order a meal. I adore having breakfast in small town cafes, and spent the last 10 miles of my trip planning my order! By the time I arrived at the Outdoorsman, I was "starving". An attraftive young blond woman promptly took my order: A glass of water a cup of coffee a small glass of milk two scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese on top English muffin She asked if I wanted hash browns. No thanks, I replied, and off she went to put my order in. This was a busy place at 10:00 in the morning on the 3rd of July, so when my server didn't immediately return with a cup of coffee, it was understandable. We all know that point in time, however, when "too much time has passed" so I began trying to get my servers attention (for that cup of coffee). No such luck. STRIKE ONE for service My food arrived: ~ No cheddar cheese, as ordered...just two partially melted slices of Kraft American ~ Hash browns, but I didn't order them, remember? Note - these hash browns had very little "brown". Maybe regulars order them extra crispy if they want them brown?! ~ My server dashed off without delivering coffee nor my glass of milk ~ My english muffin was drenched in butter, and was warm...like it had been in a toaster at some point, but (like the hash browns) was void of any kind of golden brown color STRIKE TWO for accuracy and my servers lack of interest in insuring it I eventually grabbed my own coffee. After I had finished my meal, my server delivered my tab without asking how everything was. Before she could dash off, I asked for a glass of milk...kinda like I had never ordered it originally because she didn't seem like she was in the mood for anything else. She added the cost of the milk to my bill, then fetched it for me. STRIKE THREE for below-average food preparation, and for making me feel like I was imposing upon my servers busy morning. I ordered the cheese and sausage omelette which was very good. The sausage had great flavor. The service was very fast. Within 20 minutes of our arrival all the tables along the wall were full. I have seen a couple reviews as to the wait staff. I would say our attendant was not particularly friendly but did a fine job. If you want a good breakfast at a great price, the Outdoorsman is fantastic! I have the steak and eggs every time I am in town and I am impressed at how tender and perfect the steak is cooked. I typically order oatmeal for Bfast so when I asked what comes with the oatmeal, waitress (Jenny) said just oatmeal / then I asked brown sugar or raisins or anything?
