Had breakfast at West Forty this morning -- ordered coffee, an omelette, and two buttermilk pancakes. The food itself was decent -- nothing to rave about, but it did the job. What stood out more than the food was the service -- and not in a great way. My server never introduced himself, which isn't the end of the world, but it sets the tone. He was a younger guy, and while I don't think he was trying to be rude, there wasn't much engagement or warmth. Now here's the kicker: they were out of biscuits and gravy -- and I heard no less than 20 people ask about it. What was wild is that instead of telling customers before they ordered, the servers let entire tables place their orders, only to come back 5-10 minutes later to say "Oh, we're actually out of that." And it wasn't just once -- this happened repeatedly, with the same servers acting surprised every time. It felt like they were avoiding the awkward conversation up front, and it made the whole process more frustrating for everyone. Also worth noting -- they serve your drinks by leaving pitchers at your table. While it's nice not to have to wait for refills, part of eating out is not having to pour your own drinks like you're back at a church potluck. Despite everything, I still tipped my server 100% -- my bill before tip was $22. Hopefully he learns and improves with time. Things. Have. Changed. I don't know what has happened in the last few years but this place has rapidly declined. The menu is about half the size of the previous one, which can sometimes be a good thing. Not this time. If you're interested in a dinner you have few (and pricy) options. I opted for the chicken filet which were two tasteless chicken breasts, nuked broccoli and mashed potatoes that I couldn't even eat. They tasted like a dirty, thick paste. Maybe I should have gotten then gravy they were pushing pretty hard. Child one got a BLT, liked it enough but the bacon was completely cold. Child two actually loved his chicken tenders and fries so maybe flash fried items are the way to go. On top of the disappointing meal out table had a few stray hairs, I picked dried food off my chair and the floor was littered with crumbs. I guess that should have been our first indication that this would be a sub-par dining experience. We usually stop by on our yearly vacation up north. We come here every year, sometimes more than once for breakfast. I've heard that they serve a good lunch and dinner too. But for us it's a good spot for breakfast, with lots of parking especially nice when you're towing a boat. Tractor and farming themed inside, good for kids of many ages. The menu items have farming and tractor names associated so that makes ordering fun too especially for kids. I usually get the Hired Man's breakfast with a Pancake instead of toast, and my wife usually gets the DC Case. My son likes their 8N Ford {chicken fried steak}. Something on the menu for everyone, you just have to look it over. Probably not the BEST breakfast you'll ever have, but it's GOOD stuff and pretty good on the price, and it'll curb your hunger for quite some time. Servers were nice and attentive when needed. Stopped for breakfast on the way out of town. Friendly staff (Jackie was our server), lots of nice local patrons, gallons of coffee, some country music and a good sized menu that should take care of anyone unless you're watching your cholesterol. But if you're on vacation for a few days, go on in anyway. Just don't mention it to your cardiologist! My #13 (see photo) took a while to come out of the kitchen even though the restaurant was less than 20% full (it was 10:20 a.m....the morning rush was over. The eggs were cooked exactly ordered and the pancakes were huge. This was a good stop if you are hungry and looking for good prices and nice people. The food here is SO good! No matter if you order breakfast or lunch, everything is delicious and portions are good size as well. The wait staff is always pleasant and friendly which is a big deal now a days with all of the negative crap going on! My menu favorites are the Chicken Fried Steak for breakfast, the fried mushrooms appetizer and the cheesesteak sandwich with fries! The other great thing about West Forty is the ambiance. They take decorating to a whole new level! You never get bored while sitting in the restaurant because there are so many signs and displays to check out. Just okay.... a cavernous place with little ambiance. I had the hot pork sandwich with very salty gravy which I suspect was canned.The food was pretty standard fare with little to spark enthusiasm. The pie case by the register was unappealing with desserts that looked dated and tired. read more

I was recently on vacation in Park Rapids. I visited West Forty several times because of the restaurant we were wanted to go to was closed because if fire. I want to tell you the service we got from Host, waitress and cleaning staff was the worst service I've ever had. We wanted to be seated the host/hostess didn't greet us when we came in, we were left standing for a long period of time. Waitress was only seen when order was taken and when brought to table. She never came back to see how things were and if we n needed more coffee or water. That is poor service. I hope my other restaurant opens soon then you won't be so busy. Fabulous steaks! I got the NY Strip which I highly recommend! You also get a side salad and potato choices. Their liquor choices were limited but inexpensive. There were only four wines to choose from and beer selection was limited as well. Their sandwich menu didn't look very exciting either. The place has high ceilings so it's nice and open. The decor is kind of cute too. It's very casual so it's the perfect place to come after walking around a park. This USED TO BE a favorite, but no more! We were there on Sunday. The service was extremely slow and there weren't even ten (10) tables with customers! The "hamburger steak" was tasteless (and that's the best thing one could say about it! ). I could barely cut the pork chops with a steak knife! They were so tough, I had to chew FOREVER to make them swallowable! I did complain to the waitress and she offered to have the chef redo them, but after waiting for the first plate to be delivered to our table for an unbelievably long time, I decided to just take the chops home to the dog and hope she could somehow chew it up! I was so disappointed! Of course, no compensation was offered; like offering to only charge me for the one pork chop dinner instead of the two pork chop, etc. I will definitely NOT be going back there again! Came here for dinner one night and the service was awful. We waited over an hour for our food, and within the whole period of time we were waiting, our waitress never came to ask us how we were doing and if we needed more water/drinks. When we got our food, it was cold. Definitely wouldn't recommend eating here, it was overpriced for mediocre food. We did notice that other waitresses were taking orders and getting other tables food in a timely manner, so maybe it was just our waitress who was the issue. read more

Service sucks! Food is mediocre. Our server took our drink orders and never brought them out until the food was out. (20 minutes). I ordered a NY Strip steak and it was butchered terribly. SO MUCH GRISTLE! With the steak you get a salad, I ordered Cesar dressing and got ranch and the salad came out the same time as the steak which is odd. I've quit going here due to their incredibly poor service. I kept going back, hoping it would get better, but it didn't. The last time I was there, my coleslaw was warm, my fries were cold, and the Philly type sandwich left much to be desired- the server never returned to our table so I wasn't able to voice my concerns. Stayed away for over a year AGAIN. Nothing changed. Eggs were cold. Toast was cold. Bacon room temperature. Asked for crisp bacon - got limp. Wait staff always friendly and nice but they are scattered everywhere. You always need to flag them down. They don't have stations. They are given customers by rotation. They could have 5 tables in 5 different areas. To management: I expect hot food delivered in a reasonable amount of time. Simple and basic expectation. These folks have amazing breakfasts but the dinners are terrible. I would give them 4 stars on just the breakfast but would only give one star for the dinners.
