I hung out with our daughter while my wife ordered and ate. Then, we switched. A quiche was brought to the table. I wasn't expecting it, so I asked the waitress to confirm it was for our table. She said, "Yes, it is." I assumed my wife had ordered it, so I ate it. I was about to leave when a manager came over to ask if I had ordered the item, to which I answered, "I don't know." She asked for the receipt, which I didn't have. At this point, three staff members were standing around questioning me about this quiche. One of them brought out a receipt with "154" written on it; our table was 54. They were speaking Spanish among themselves, so I wasn't sure what was happening, but they eventually walked away. I thought the matter was settled. I went outside, and my wife went back inside to wash her hands. The manager approached her to ask if she had ordered the quiche and requested the receipt, explaining that I had probably eaten an item I didn't pay for. My wife hadn't kept the receipt, so we couldn't confirm or deny it. Maybe the person at the counter added it to our order by mistake. Mom-and-Pop shops usually have these credit card transaction rules and there's a sign which normally can't be seen due to "sign pollution" on the walls. The business owner is allowed to set these "minimums" according to the federal government and it really makes sense; "Google It!" if you're interested in the details of why. It's a $10 minimum for credit card transactions at El Palacio de las Comidas. Luckily I had cash on me. This is your typical "food by the pound" restaurant. You choose your protein and you get two sides with it. Most folks choose a protein, a rice (moro or congri) and their side, wether it be french fries, fried plantains, or cassava. You have many different options to choose from. I choose the boneless chicken breast with two side portions of boiled cassava. These food by the pound restaurants are scattered throughout Hialeah and can be convenient when you have nothing to cook at home. If you want to eat healthy, this particular restaurant does provide healthy options to choose as sides. This location used to be a Blue Sky and I was a frequent customer. I like the name of the restaurant. If you live in Miami you normally see or come across a "El Palacio de los Jugos". This restaurant is named the same but instead of JUGOS it says COMIDAS. Both venues just mentioned provide both food and juices. Before ending this review I would also like to mention the chicken breast I received was definitely a much smaller portion than what you normally get at places that are similar to this one. Food is fresh and the chefs know what they're doing. If you're in the mood for Cuban food this place will kill the craving.
